RECOGNITIONKay Wang:Congratulations on a successful Chinese New Year Celebration! Five Rotariansshowed Kay support at this event!

PROGRAM SPEAK ER: R.I. District Governor Earl K ilm erDougherty Valley Rotary would like to thankDistrict 5160Governor Earl Kilmer for giving an exciting speech on RotaryInternational, what the foundation can offer us, and what our goalsshould be as a new club! With 24 years in Rotary service, DG EarlKilmer is dedicated to the true cause and origins of Rotary. Hemanages 70 clubs (3 of which are provisional) in District 5160, whichruns from the Oregon border to Davis to Berkeley to San Ramon. There are 1.2 million Rotarians worldwide and 531 districts total. Mr.Kilmer reports directly to the International President 2009-2010,John Kenny of Scotland.

As a new club, it is our job and our mission to delve into RotaryInternational in the next few months and figure out: What is

Rotary? As a Rotarian, each of us now have responsibility towardsour club, our community members, Rotary International, and toourselves! Mr. Kilmer encourages us to individually identifysomething within Rotary that we are passionate about and to makethe best out of it!

He touched on some key resources, such as our presidentand district leaders. But the most important and valuableresource we could possibly have iswww.Rotary.org and

www.Rotary5160.org. Our district website is a great placeto find out what is happening in the community, how youcan give back, and not to mention, enjoy the fact that

many R.I. leaders today have sprung from our very ownDistrict 5160!

More on Rotary1. ABCs of Rotary:

A: Activities- No activities=No progressB: BodiesC: Cash

Without the ABC, a Rotary club will die.2. Rotary provides us with funding to do our activities. Our financial

commitments to Rotary are invested, with ending income used topay for admin costs. At the end of 3 years of investments, halfgoes to world fund, and half comes back to our district to be usedfor local projects to improve our local community

    3. P.A.I.N. Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, and Nigeria are thecountries left with a presence of polio. Rotarys mission is toeradicate polio around the world. It is Rotarys responsibility, as anon-political and non-religious organization.

    4. GIVING to Rotary is a COMMITMENT, NOT A REQUIREMENT.100% of our donations go towards charity

Mr. Earl Kilmer ended with a powerful quote by John Kenny, International President 2009-2010Rotarians, the future of Rotary is in your hands!

DID YOU KNOW ?The concept of Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) originated in 1959 in Queensland, Australia.

After learning that Princess Alexandra, who was in her early 20s, would be attending the state's

centennial celebration, local Rotarians planned activities specifically for the princess's age group. RYLAis Rotarys leadership training program for young people (normally ages 14-30) that emphasizesleadership, citizenship, and personal growth.Find out more at http://www.rotary.org/EN/STUDENTSANDYOUTH/Pages/ridefault.aspx
