Volume 1, Issue 1
The Grant School Literary Magazine Club provides all
Grant School students the opportunity to showcase
their stories, poems, illustrations, and other types of
literary work to the entire school community. We
meet full year, from October to June, once a week.
All club members work collaboratively with each
other and their advisor to makeup the core of what
our magazine is all about—creative writing! Members
are not only inspired to write short stories, poems,
and comic strips from creative writing mini-lessons
in the first part of our meeting, but also from their
own imaginations and 5th grade and 6th grade ELA
classes. Our magazine is bade beautiful and
whimsical by the members’ innovative drawings that
decorate each page.
While this magazine does not feature all of creative
writing done throughout the course of the fall/
winter session, as students chose to keep some
work for their personal portfolios, this issue
features many pieces that showcase each
members’ creative and unique imaginations!

The Big Chungi
By: Gabriel Enriquez
Back in 600 million B.C. there was a legendary creature that drank sprite cranberry and attacked cave man it was the big chungi tribe. They lasted for 500 million years before they fell. The first and only ruler of chungi was big chungus he was alive for 1,000 million years. When he started to rule he had a population of 8 thousand chungi.
this is a chungus there are about 20 still alive in the world they are endangered.
In the chungi age there was a lot of chungi they were rich they had trade routes and they all are pow-erful. The king big chungus made the best military. There soldiers were mostly poor chungi the more wealthy chungi have gooder shelter than the not so wealthy chungi. They used spears and bows and arrows they rode on giraffes with iron armor. They also had a special battle cry that goes like this “CHUNGUS” but in a deep voice and loud. Sometimes they invade other places if they think they are dangerous. Sometimes when a chungi is hurt they will be taken to a ,medical center to treat them but the medicine they had was not that affective so if a virus spreads all the population would die but that did not happen. Chungi are powerful and are scary. In there time they took over world and big chungus ruled the whole earth
HOW BIG CHUNGUS TOOK OVER THE WORLD
Big chungus sent armies of chungi to different lands to attack and invade. They got so many good things from other groups that all the new things that the chungi got others think that the chungi think the sol-diers were gods. Some of the chung's who died were discovered in other places away from chungi tribe. Big chungus wanted to rule the world so he sent armies of chungi all over the world to build new kingdoms. after 11 years big chungus had armies of chungi all over the world.
HOW THEY FELL
The king big chungus died and they all lost about their valuable stuff that only big chungus had access to so then another group came to attack and since big chungus could not warn his peoples about the armies coming the chungi fell. Only about 20 chungi survived.

If I Were President... By: Sophia Luis-Yeoman
I woke up one day and started jumping up and down and screaming because every news channel announced, ‘’SOPHIA YO-MAN is the brand new President of the United States of America!”
If I were president and could do whatever I want, it would be my birthday every day. I would celebrate it by flying in the Air Force One to every country in the world starting with Mexico because my dad was born there. If I were president I would start my own recycling program and every year we would clean up the streets and collect paper, cans, and glass Why? So our country can be a better and clean place!
If I were president I would learn to speak every language in the world so I can talk to leaders of all the different countries. I would make a new holiday called “Sophia Day.” On this day everybody will have to get me lots and lots of presents, like a puppy or a new bike!
If I were president I would make children go to school for 6 months and have summer break for 6 months so it could be equal learning and relaxing.
I would make a law where every child only has one homework a day because they need to have more time to play outside.
When the news told the world, “Sophia Yo-man is the brand new President!” I knew it was all a dream sooo I just went back to sleep. ZZZZ!!!!!!

How a Girl Rose Up to the Occasion...But Fell Short.
By: Brandon Taggart
Athena was a very serious, and smart girl, with a lot of talent, and interest in making
machines to help her family out. Occasionally she got so caught up with it, that she stayed
up late, and woke up with bags under her thick black rimmed glasses with hazel eyes that
were always serious. She had an adorable five year old little brother named Elijah who
looked up to her, and was always trying to invent things like her. All was well until one night,
a year ago when Athena was doing her homework, and listening to a romantic duet that
was in perfect Harmony. Then disaster struck as her father said something appalling that
caused an argument between two family members that shook the house. “Athena, you need
to stop worrying about that stupid device, and focus on cooking dinner for me, you lazy
good for nothing Brat!,” her father said as he started Flailing his arms in frustration.
Perplexed, Athena without thinking, fired back with something that stopped her father
in his tracks. “Well at least I don’t sit on my fat behind all day long watching dumb shows
about people getting arrested, and complaining about how our house is falling apart, you
need to do something about it, instead of yelling at Elijah, and blaming other people. You
need to handle your own problems, and stop eating doughnuts all the time, you fat dunce,”
Athena said with such ferocity, that she could feel the indent of her nails, as they dug into
her skin from balling of her fists. She had never been so upset in her life, but now a million
and one thoughts raced through her head: What has happened to my father? Why is he be-
ing so strict all of the sudden? Then they heard the door creak open, all was quiet, and the
only thing heard was Athena’s hard breathing. She had lost her cool, and she could feel her
heart pounding with cold hard malice. A tall woman at least six foot five walked into the
small living room, and sat her bags down on the kitchen counter. This was the matriarch of
the house, she was in charge of everything, and was the person who kept things in line.
Athena and her mother profoundly locked eyes for a few seconds when out of nowhere,
Elijah came running out of his room, and stopped next to Athena, and then hugged her
around her waist. “Thena’,I made this for you,” Elijah said happily. Athena opened her hand,
and there was a little tin army truck, but it was very good. “Eli listen to me very carefully, I
need you to go in your room and lock the door. Don’t open the door unless you hear me tell
you to do so, okay?” At first Elijah looked confused, but as a look of worry passed over his
face, he scurried back to his, and Athena heard the little click of the door. At this, Athena’s
mother spoke with a very clear commanding voice that gave her goosebumps. “It has been
brought to my attention that you yelled at your father, and insulted him.” Here we go, Athe-
na thought to herself as she saw her mother step towards her. “You will not speak to me or
your father in such a disrespectful manner ever again. And to ensure that you watch your
mouth, I am going to destroy all of those useless trinkets you have built.”

“But mother… he provoked me, he called me a worthless brat. But now that I think about it, you don’t care about your own kids, it's okay for your failure of a husband to insult his own daughter, but why doesn’t he get in trouble, or scolded. I don’t see you taking any-thing away from him, but if you do, he’d probably lose everything that he’s got, because he has already lost his daughter and son,” Athena said with fire in her eyes. She was tired of these unfair, and corrupt so called parents, she just wanted out. “Young woman, How dare you defy us like that. You know what, I’m done with you. Get out now, and don’t come back. You and that little boy were always a burden on us.”
Athena, with angry tears stormed into her room, packed up her suitcase and packed all her valued possessions. She crushed her family photo with hands, and then in one swift sweep-ing motion her hand came across the desk and knocked down all the notes her mother had left. As she walked towards her brother’s door, it suddenly opened and there was Elijah standing there with a suitcase and a winter outfit on with tears in his eyes. Athena knelt down in front of Elijah and spoke to him. “Elijah, listen to me, life is always going to be hard. Only the strong survive, and I do not exaggerate when I say that you have what it takes to make it in this cruel world. You are named after a prophet that was a miracle worker, I know that we will pull a miracle and come across someone that is going to help us out. I swear that I will do any and everything in my power to ensure that harm does not dare step in the way of our journey. Trust me, you are going to be alright, you know that I will always love you Eli no matter what happens.” Athena charged herself to this promise, and felt a wave of determination wash over her, as they passed by their parents without saying goodbye, and stepped out of the door into the cold winter morning. Many hard weeks passed by, but Athena kept her promise and made sure that Elijah had food and water and a good shelter for the time be-ing. She was like a mother in a way, and she felt confident that something good was going to happen. On one faithful after-noon, while shopping with the little amount of money she had, she accidentally bumped into a person that she seemed familiar. And as luck would have it, this mysterious figure pulled down her hood, and revealed the face of Athena’s aunt Ali-yah. Elijah and jumped with joy as they drove to their new with the knowing that they never see their twisted parents again. Only to soon find out that they would be cast out by their abusive uncle, and thrust back into the jaws of the struggle….

Once there was a girl, a girl who loved everything, everything except door-knobs, and I’m here to tell you why.
Teresa lived in a house that was very old, and was falling apart. The water was always leaking from the faucets, the wooden floors were so torn up that they had huge gaps in them, the windows just wouldn’t stay shut, so during the winter the snow would enter the house and fall on her head as she slept. She was always fixing every-thing, whether it was tightening the screws on the chairs, or putting a bookshelf back together after it collapsed, she did it all.
Back to the doorknobs, Teresa hated them, she despised them. The doorknobs wouldn’t stay in place. They would just fall out of the doors onto the floor where they would get kicked around by her two little mischievous sisters. Then they would get lost, and then someone would end up stuck in the bathroom, or outside of the bath-room.
I mentioned her sisters before, but I never told you their names. Their names are Tatiana and Tess. These two were twins which were both 4 years old. Tatiana liked to be better than everyone, she acted like an angel around guests, and in public, but at home she was a real demon. Tess was very intelligent but she didn’t use that intelli-gence for the best reasons. The one thing they both liked, or if they didn’t like were good at, was getting into trouble, together.
There was one day when these two got into so much trouble that it is a miracle that they are still alive to this day. It all started when Teresa’s parents left her home alone to go grocery shopping. This was fine except for the fact that the twins were left home with her, mostly because they would cause too much trouble at the grocery store. By the way, Teresa is 13 years old, so her parents think she is responsible enough to be left home alone with her sisters. After all, what could go wrong?
As soon as her parents left, Teresa sat down to read her favorite book, “The Phoenix of Destiny” When all of a sudden she hears giggles, very faint giggles. All of them coming from upstairs. At first Teresa remains still thinking the giggles are com-ing from the same place it will be ok. Then the faint giggles turn into loud laughter, “Ok, what’s going on” Teresa says as she walks up the stairs.
She turns the corner and there is water coming from underneath the door of the bathroom. Teresa takes one glance at where the doorknob should be and she knows what’s going on. The doorknob is missing, and her sisters had once again been locked in the bathroom, only this time they had flooded it. She looks in through the keyhole, and guess what she saw? She saw both of her sisters, better known as thing 1 and thing 2 from cat and the hat, splashing in the water of the flooded bathroom. She had to find a way to turn off the water, and get them out of there.

(continued from pg. 22)
She ran into her basement, determined to turn off the water valve for the entire house. However, it was stuck. She tried using her bare hands, gloves, a wrench. Nothing worked. She would have to try another way. She ran upstairs. Now the water was real-ly spreading, it already had reached the twins bedroom, and Teresa’s bedroom. She quickly runs into the attic to see if she can find a spare doorknob. She couldn’t find one, but what she did find was a stick, a clothes hanger, and the leg of a broken doll. The stick was too large, it just didn’t fit in the doorknob hole. Next she tried the clothes hanger, she couldn’t even find a way to fit the clothes hanger inside the door-knob hole. Then she tried the leg of a former Barbie doll, it went it the hole but when she turned it nothing happened. By now, her shoes are soaking wet, and Tatiana and Tess are swimming in the bathtub.
She then had an idea, all she really had to do was find a doorknob meaning any doorknob, she could just take a doorknob out of a door even if it was already in use. She grabbed her toolbox from under her bed, and pulled out a screwdriver. She took her screwdriver and began to remove the doorknob. She pulled it out and then she at last unlocked the door. Water came flowing out, but at least she could finally turn off the water.
Tatiana and Tess bounced out happily, knocking out anoth-er doorknob to another room...
