Festivals in India are an integral part of people’s life. They portray the rich

cultural heritage of the country. Festivals bring a kind of spirit and enthusiasm in the routine as well as monotonous life.

“Man is a social animal.” This sentence itself indicates how male oriented our society is! But surprisingly in this male dominated society Navratri is the festival which celebrates the power of “ SHAKTI ”. Navratri is said to be India’s longest festival of dance. It is a celebration where people spend nine nights worshipping Goddess Durga, dancing, singing and most importantly dressing up with the beautiful traditional outfits! It is celebrated all over India. Especially Gujarat is very famous for it’s “Raas” and “Garba”.

There are different stories woven around this

festival. As per the tale in ancient scriptures, when the world was tortured by a mighty vicious demon known as Mahishasura and even the Gods could not defeat him, they all combined their energies and the mighty warrior Goddess Durga was born .The Goddess engaged the demon in battle and killed many of his comrades, like

Chanda and Muna, and also came to be known as Chamundeshwari. For nine days, the gruesome battle continued between the pious Goddess and the vicious Demon, however, on the tenth day, the Goddess subdued the ravaging beast and killed him. This sacred day is celebrated as Vijayadashmi.

Continued From Page-1 Dushera is believed to be celebrated on that day till date. The word Dushera in itself can be construed as Dasa Hara, which means cutting ten heads of the demon Ravana. Therefore the festival is celebrated to mark the triumh of good over evil. Navratri highlights the principles elucidated by the Ramayana.

If we look at the spiritual aspect of this festival, it is about worshipping THE SHAKTI, MOTHER PRAKUTI means THE GODESS DURGA,. A woman is the full circle within her is the power to create, nurture, transform and destroy! Navratri is puja of “SHAKTI”.

STATUE OF UNITY: A HOMAGE TO THE ARCHITECT OF UNITEd INdIA

“Manpower without unity is not a strength unless it is harmonised and united properly, then it becomes a spiritual power” – Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Wisdom, diplomacy and leadership. These are the three words that come to our minds when we think of Vallabhbhai Patel, fondly known as Sardar. He used these three qualities in all his interactions during the times of conflict – whether it was with farmers during the Bardoli Satyagrah or with the Maharajas and Nawabs who wished to become independent rulers of the princely states after independence. The accession to the Indian Republic was possible only because of Sardar’s political intelligence.

Sardar is also known as the architect of United India, because of his pivotal role in in channelling India’s unity. His concept of ‘Suraaj’ – good governance’ – became a crucial part of his political ideology when he was the first Home Minister of independent India. Following Gandhi’s footsteps, he always rooted for Unity and was also instrumental in mobilizing the farmer community of India, as well as bringing together different castes and communities to join the freedom struggle.

The Statue of Unity intends to spread the ideology that Sardar always stood for, and what contemporary India also direly needs: “The main task before India today is to consolidate herself into a well-knit and united power”.
