AUGUST 2011AUGUST 2011AUGUST 2011AUGUST 2011

President’s Message

As your newly elected SCA Board President, I

would like to thank the retiring Board members

Avonelle Barton and Jerry Durgan for their very

productive 3 years. During their time in office,

the golf course irrigation system was installed,

the Clubhouse was renovated, a new Golf

Professional was hired and the first phase of

the east end landscape project was completed.

That was a very significant number of

accomplishments.

I would also like to welcome our new Board

Members, Leigh Wilcox and Rod Sacconaghi. I

am sure they will be a great addition to the

Board. At our meeting next month, we will be

developing a “bucket list” of issues/projects

that we would like to address in the coming

year. If anyone would like to add something to

our “bucket list,” put your written request in an

envelope, mark it “bucket list” and drop it in

the mail slot in the office. In the next 2

months, we will prioritize the bucket list and

start working on those with the highest

priority.

Again I’d like to welcome our new Golf

Professional, Rob Lindsey. Rob has stocked the

golf shop with some very nice Summerfield

logo shirts and jackets which we all should be

proud to wear, even if you are not a golfer. If

you like living here and would be proud to let

your friends and others know, stop in to the

golf shop and check out Rob’s selections. The

Board, with Rob’s support, is encouraging

outside public play at our lovely golf course as

an effort to keep our membership rates at a

reasonable level. If you have friends who are

golfers, encourage them to visit us and

experience our fun course.

We had 70 people attending our first dance of

2011! Yeah! Thank you to the Trawicks who

announced the event last Thursday at the Elsie

Stuhr dance. The great music of the Swing Street

Glenn Tadina Quartet had us on our feet dancing

most of the evening. They also played song

requests from our guests. We planned two mixers

to be sure our single ladies had a chance to

dance. Also, ladies were happy to have two male

instructors, Paris Guffey and Steve Stowell from

The Ballroom Dance Company in Tigard, to dance

with them. They are planning to be at the next

two dances as well. I want to thank all of the

people from the Dance Club who volunteered to

set up and take down. That was a tremendous

help, and volunteerism is what makes Summerfield

Clubs successful! Hope to see more of you for our

Sadie Hawkins dance on September 17th

Directors Reports

Barton – Clubhouse Committee: The Club-

house Committee is assigned the job of keep-

ing abreast of what needs to be done and

taking care of it themselves or for larger

jobs getting bids and submitting them to

the Board for approval. This year the com-

mittee has been chaired by Barbara Lance

and she has done an admirable job. This

past year a Clubhouse Sub-Committee was

formed for the specific purpose of the

renovation of the Clubhouse. Please give

recognition to the following residents for a

job very well done: Joyce Astrup, lead

member; Wendy Pfeifer, Chris Harris, Dave

Rhodes; and when Dave went south, Dick

Van Dyke. Thank you to all!

Durgan – Liaison for Common Area Land-

scape Team: The Summerfield Common

Area Landscape Team consists of Georgina

Allen, Paul Ochs, Bob Van Vlack and Sharon

Hughes. The team has the responsibility of

all landscaping not associated with the golf

course or the regular Landscape Commit-

tee. They have designed and installed

areas such as the flower garden on High-

land Drive at the 8th tee box, the entrance

to Summerfield at 104th Street, and at our

own Clubhouse. If you missed any of these,

you certainly cannot miss what has been

done at the east end of our Clubhouse.

Thank you team.

Kerns – Liaison for the Newcomers Com-

mittee, Directory, Fair Housing, Clubs: For

the Newcomers Welcome Committee,

thank you very much to Chair Susan Van

Lente. The Committee hosts three meet-

ings a year for our new residents. They also

deliver Information Packets about Summer-

field to all new residents prior to the wel-

come receptions. Special thanks to Mary

Shute who arranged the refreshments at

the receptions.

For the Directory, work begins in August

and September in order to finish prior to

early November. Directories are distrib-

uted at the time residents pay their yearly

fees. We began collecting e-mail addresses

for the Summerfield office use last year and

will continue doing that this year. At

some point residents may be asked if they

want their e-mail printed in the directory

but we will not print those addresses with-

out written permission.

Fair Housing: Just a reminder that the of-

fice is required to maintain accurate age

verification of our residents in order to

maintain our age 55+ designation.

Clubs: There are so many clubs in Sum-

merfield that I always tell people that if

you are bored living here, it is your own

fault. Several of the clubs are eager to

have new members join. One of the

exciting things that happened this year

revolves around the activities of the

Social Club, whose main function is to

encourage new activities and events to

form and get underway.

Nottingham – Liaison for Marshals

Committee, Greens Committee, Pro

Shop: Again this year, we enjoy one of

the best maintained golf courses in the

Portland area thanks to the great work

of Rick Sullivan and his crew. Ray

DeLuca, Chairman of the Greens Com-

mittee, and his members have contin-

ued their work with Rick Sullivan to

ensure the high quality on the course.

Many thanks to our Marshals and Start-

ers for their outstanding performance

during the last year. The Marshals have

been led by Larry Launder and the

Starters by Roy Love. On March 1st

, Rob

Lindsey became the Golf Professional

for our Golf Pro Shop. We have all en-

joyed our association with Rob and we

appreciate all of his efforts.

Pfeifer – Liaison for the Landscape

Committee & Tennis Committee: The

Landscape Committee, currently under

the chairmanship of Art Krueger, is

made up of 6-7 volunteers who review

all Landscape Change Requests for com-

pliance with the Landscape Manual. In

the past year, this committee has

cleared 129 Change Requests. Compli-

ance with our governing documents,

including the Landscape Manual, is

what makes Summerfield as beautiful

as it is. Thank you to the Landscape

Committee. The Landscape Committee

would like to thank all residents for

their concern and compliance.

For Tennis Committee, thanks to the

tennis players for their dedication to

the game and self- management style.

Thiemann – Liaison for Architectural

Committee & Swimming Pool Commit-

tee: During the 2010-2011 fiscal year,

the Architectural Committee of six

members serviced 175 Change Requests, consisting of 199 projects.

Most notable included 34 house paintings and sidings, 17 patio decks

and covers, 17 roofs, 18 fences, 18 windows and doors, 10 driveways

and walkways and many other miscellaneous projects. Another nota-

ble accomplishment was the installation of two new community

benches. The Architectural Committee wants to thank all the resi-

dents for their cooperation regarding changes to homes. The entire

Architectural Committee deserves a special thank you for their dedi-

cated work towards the maintenance of our community.

The Swimming Pool Committee information was provided by volunteer

Dolores Tate, who graciously stayed on for another term as Chair. For

May through October 2010, 4,466 people used the swimming pool.

Please note that there is now an emergency telephone out by the

swimming pool, with a direct connect to 911 only. Also, the SCA Board

approved the installation of an automated chemical feeding and moni-

toring system. It will improve the pool water conditions and reduce

the number of times per day for volunteer manual testing. Finally, a

special thank you to all of the Swimming Pool Committee members for

their dedicated work.

Vogel – Liaison for Neighborhood Watch, Marketing & Communica-

tions & Summary: The Neighborhood Watch program is chaired by

Diana Poorman. Diana is the coordinator of this volunteer group

which was started several years ago to increase security on our

neighborhood blocks and within our homes. With the help of approxi-

mately 14 Area Coordinators and 77 Block Captains, Diana has trained

coordinators and updated a listing of 1078 households. This fall,

Neighborhood Watch will sponsor informative meetings for all resi-

dents on fire prevention and earthquake preparedness.

The Summary: It has been almost one year since volunteer Sharon

Hughes turned over the compilation and editing of the Summary to

Cari Froeber, our Administrator. Cari says it is a big task, but she really

enjoys doing it. Thanks go to each Committee and Club that contrib-

utes articles and information. Special thanks to our amazing delivery

manager, Lela Thompson, for organizing the hand delivery each month

and to the dozens of residents that make deliveries.

The very active Marketing & Communications Committee is chaired by

Leigh Wilcox. The committee developed a marketing plan that has an

overall goal to increase public awareness of Summerfield and our ex-

cellent golf course. Subcommittee work has focused on the recent

successful Summerfield Showcase open house, a golf course advertis-

ing plan, website re-development and improved signage. Special

thanks to Roy Love who chaired the open house subcommittee and

Diana Miller and Ken Miller, who co-chaired the event. Thanks also to

Rob Lindsey for his golf course marketing efforts, Ron Stark for the

website improvement efforts and Dick Fleming on the signage efforts.

Administrator Report: Summerfield is so lucky to have such a dedi-

cated Board of Directors. Please take the time to thank a Board Mem-

ber. Our two outgoing Board Members, Jerry & Avonelle, have been

amazing, strong contributors to the success of this association and I

thank them both. We’ve done a million things in the last year, but the

five that stand out the most for me include taking over the editing of

the Summary, the upstairs Renovation, the search for our new Golf

Pro, the Summerfield Showcase event and the east side landscaping

Architectural Committee Times-a-waste-n. The good weather construction

season to complete home repair and maintenance

projects is half over. It seems as if summer had just

begun and already we are hearing back to school

ads.

When planning a project, reading the dos and

don’ts in the Architectural Manual and also

following the instructions on the Change Request

Form itself can speed up approval to proceed.

Committee members volunteer to help you adhere

to Summerfield Civic Association Conditions and

Restrictions that apply to your projects.

Please welcome two new volunteers,

Annual Meeting, Cont. project. Thank you to everybody that helped with those unique

projects. As always, thank you to our team of employees here.

Since we have such a small paid staff, we really run on volunteers

and I thank each Committee member, Club and activity that sup-

ports this organization. If you’re even thinking about volunteering,

but not sure how you can contribute, please give me or a Board

member the opportunity to talk to you about ideas and needs.

Thank you Garden Club for the beautiful floral arrangements and for

helping with the refreshments. There are so many behind-the-

scenes people who do so much of the dirty work, from the residents

who pick up dog poop that didn’t come from their dog, the resi-

dents who cleaned the graffiti off their neighbors wall, the neighbor

who pulled the weeds from the vacant lot next to them, the resi-

dents who get on their hands and knees and help with the carpet

stains…thank you. It is very rewarding to serve this community,

though some days can be more challenging than others, but I do

want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Presentation of New Officers: The Board of Directors adjourned

during the Administrator Report to elect new officers. Upon their

return, President Durgan announced the new officers of the 2011 –

2012 Board: Rick Pfeifer – President; Mary Kerns – Vice President;

Bob Nottingham – Treasurer.

The gavel was passed to the new President, Rick Pfeifer, along with

the spare set of office keys. Rick thanked Jerry and Avonelle for

their three years of service and summarized their accomplishments

over the past three years. Jerry & Avonelle were each presented a

thank you card.

Meeting adjourned at 7:50 PM and refreshments were served.

AUGUST 2011AUGUST 2011AUGUST 2011AUGUST 2011

The Clubhouse is available for Summerfield

residents’ private parties (birthdays, anniversaries,

etc.). We offer a very reasonable usage fee of just

$2 per non-Summerfield person (plus a refundable

deposit if you leave the facilities clean and

everything back in place). The exception to the $2

per non-Summerfield person fee is for memorial

services of current Summerfield residents. The first

thing to do is to call Sharon Wilcox from the

Clubhouse Committee to see if your requested date

is available. She is the Calendar Coordinator and is

the only person who readily knows if space is

available. Pick up a Summerfield Clubhouse Use

Application from the Clubhouse lobby or on-

line. Read it, fill in the information, sign the back

and return two copies to the Clubhouse office (slide

it into the mail slot if the office is closed) with your

check for the required fees. If there are two

inquiries for the same date, the first application and

check received secures the date. A copy of your

application will be returned to you, signed by Sharon

and marked “Posted.” Keep this for your records – if

you’re using the Ballroom, Lakeview room or

Kitchen, it has a lot of information on the back about

all the things you’ll need to know. If you decide not

to use whatever room(s) you have reserved, please

Thinking about reserving a room in the Clubhouse?

Summerfield Book Club The Summerfield Book Club will meet on Tuesday, August 9

th at 2:00 PM in the Clubhouse Conference

Room to review the biography, Shakespeare: The World as Stage by Bill Bryson. Betty Brader will present

the background of the author and lead the group discussion. All Summerfield residents are welcome!

As one reader writes, this is a “good little read.” The book is a synthesis of everything you wanted to know

about Shakespeare (the few facts that are available) - a 196 page book that doesn’t leave out anything

essential. One could say that, instead of a biography, a history lesson is offered that disproves many of the

myths about Shakespeare’s life while offering a witty account of the times in which Shakespeare lived.

“Although he left nearly a million words of text, we have just fourteen words in his own hand - his name

signed six times and the words, ‘by me’ on his will. . . . George Stevens observed that ‘all we know of

William Shakespeare is contained within a few scanty facts: that he was born in Stratford-upon-Avon,

produced a family there, went to London, became an actor and writer, returned to Stratford, made a will,

and died’ . . . It is not all that far from the truth.” (Bryson)

call Sharon and tell her you’ve had a change of

plans. Prior to your event, the Clubhouse

Committee’s Special Events Advisor, Grace Ann

Lynch, will contact you to explain the ins and outs

of using equipment in the Lakeview, Ballroom

and/or kitchen. Just a reminder that a

Summerfield resident must be present at all

times guests are present...and that includes when

the caterers are setting up and cleaning up. Also,

the Lobby is never reserved for private events. It

is always left open as a gathering place for

residents.

vice on this committee. Rod is

new gutters and down-

The Green Corner By Kathy Peper

Though many aspects of our culture

encourage us to believe that the

important things in life are wealth and

fame, extensive academic research

across different countries and cultures

has shown that happiness has little to

do with spending money. The most

contented people are those who

spend their time helping others and

contributing to their community. From

peeling potatoes in a soup kitchen to

working pro bono, volunteering gives

you an opportunity not only to

increase the social capital of the

nation – the cornerstone of its

economic prosperity – but also to find

personal fulfillment in an activity that

doesn’t revolve around consuming

resources. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.
