Important Updates

Effective immediately inmates who work job assignments that overlap staff shift

change are required to check in with the oncoming shift. Failure to check in will

result in you being marked absent for that shift and you will not be paid. We do

appreciate all you do to support the facility operations let’s make sure you get paid

for it.

bring families together for greater understanding on the positive changes you are making in your recovery and planning for a

successful transition home.

Pre-registration is

Please submit completed Fam-ily Day order form with the names of your guests, their relationship to you and age, for those 17 and under, along with attached CD 28.

Maximum of 5 guests per In-mate. If there is an exception needed, please contact your DOC counselor.

All guests must be approved on your approved visitors list.

Participation Cost

$5.00 per adult in custody. $4.00 per guest. There will be no charge for children under 2 years old.

Visiting for Family Day Event Weekend

For those inmates who are participating in the Family Day:

Visiting Hours will take place from 11:15am-3:30pm.

(No early visiting due to the size of the event)

Visitors and Adults in custody will be required to follow the visit-

ing dress code.

There will NOT be any regular visiting outside the Family Day

Event on Saturday.

For those inmates who are not participating in the event, visits will

only take place on Sunday.

PHOTO TICKETS

DOC Photo tickets HAVE to be purchased in advanced.

Kiwanis Club will have a photo booth on site that can utilize the CD-28 process.

Visiting will be modified

In anticipation of a large amount of visitors and the limited space in our vis-

iting room, visiting will be limited to a maximum of 15 groups for a one-

hour visit. There will be two-one hour visiting sessions for both the morning

and afternoon. Visitors will only be allowed to visit during one of the visit-

ing sessions for the day.

A sign up sheet will be available at the Family Day Event on Saturday.

SUPPORT LOCAL FAMILY

A local family of Baker City lost their son, Dylan Thomas, died Saturday,

.July 15, 2017 after he slipped from the float trailer he was riding on with a group

of other local children. It was his seventh birthday. This occurred during the Min-

ers Jubilee Parade.

If you would like to contribute to the family who lost their loved one, we

invite you to fill out a CD-28 to Activities before August 14, 2017. Your funds are

greatly appreciated and will be dispersed to the family.

Powder River has contributed towards other functions that reside in this

community. Functions and organizations that have received from Power River in-

clude Boy Scouts of America and Gift Bag Give Back, helping foster kids within

the Juvenile Department during the holidays. In the past, Powder River also con-

tributed towards Relay for Life; an event that races to find a cure for cancer.

SUSTAINABLE GARDENING CLASS 2017

Powder River Correctional Facility (PRCF), in con-junction with Oregon State University (OSU), Let-

tuce Grow Garden Foundation/Growing Gardens, will be hosting a self-study Sustainable Gardening

Class. Classes will start in August, 2017. In this course, you will learn about the art and the science of caring for plants. Specifically, our focus will be on the prevention and diagnosis of plant problems, as well as the least toxic approach to tolerating and/or managing plant problems in the home hor-ticultural landscape. On average, students should expect to spend 6-8 hours per week on this course: viewing narrated lectures and completing readings, assignments and quizzes. There will be a sin-gle, open book, final exam for this course. In order to earn your Certificate of Home Horticulture, you must earn 70% or above on this exam.

Students must be disciplined, self-starter, and motivated. It will require a lot of reading, homework and tests each week.

The classes will be from August 2017 thru October 2017

Tuesdays from 12:00pm to 1:30pm.

Requirements:

1. Must have 6 months before release or entering treatment. You need to commit to complete the entire program. 2. Must have GED or enrolled to obtain GED. 3. Must have DOC approval. 4. Disciplined and dedicated to complete all assignments and participate in class activi-ties. 5. You must arrange with your Work Supervisor to attend classes. You will not be ex-cused from work to attend class unless you have approval from work site. Communication is KEY! 6. Please include a One Paragraph statement as to why you want to take the class and how much commitment you are willing to invest?

Individuals who want to apply to be assigned to PRCF’s Garden, Greenhouse or Landscape work assignments must be enrolled in course and be an outstanding student with above average test scores.

To enroll send a communication to Ms. Hysong as soon as possible.

Deleting Old Messages in Telmate

Commissary has received several inquiries asking how to delete old Telmate messages. Unfortunately these messages

cannot be deleted because they are official notices. We are working with Telmate to see if there are other options.

Canteen Notice

Distribution days to work around the influx of people observing the 2017 Eclipse August

21. Changing the distribution day the week before to August 16 and the distribution day the

week after to August 25.

Here’s what a G.P. Committee member has to say

I’m a convict. I’m an addict, junkie, liar, thief and robber. I would

steal from you, or anyone, even my own family. I take from them be-

cause they always forgive me. I know this hurts them, but I don’t care. I

don’t care about anyone or anything. This was my justification, my Core

Belief. I lived by this motto because I thought it gave me strength.

I’m currently serving the 9th year of a 13.5-year prison sentence.

Somewhere along the line I began to question that core belief. How had

it served me? I victimized people constantly. I forced my friends and

family to live every moment of my addiction, and later my prison sen-

tence, with me. I left a pregnant girlfriend to struggle and now have a

daughter who has never had her father to tuck her into bed at night. That

is what “I don’t care” has done for me.

After a few years incarcerated I began to change. I joined clubs,

made a plan to enter college, eventually entered working towards a de-

gree and joined a Union Apprenticeship program. I enjoyed regular vis-

its from my daughter. Her name is Jordyn and she’s beautiful. Once I

finally had the chance to enter the A.I.P program, I did so for the 3-year

time cut because I had already changed right? Wrong. The changes I

made were on the surface. My thinking, emotions and beliefs were still

unchanged. I still victimized and deceived. The person I claimed to be

and the actions I took were not the same. I’d been lying to myself, long-

ing to change, but lacked the tools for the job.

After just 60 days in the program I can say I’m not a convict. I’m a

father. I’m not a junkie, liar or thief, but a role model, friend and ally.

I’m choosing each day to be these things and finally know what it means

to embrace change. I’m going home to my daughter. I’m leaving, yes,

but what really matters is that I’m a better man. Knowing what I know

now, given the same opportunity, without the time cut, I’d enter the pro-

gram in a heartbeat.
