DNA Envelopes:
Submitting Animal Information into
Aksarben Database
A change from last year is that exhibitors will be
responsible for submitting their own animal in-
formation into the AKSARBEN livestock data-
base prior to the nomination deadline.
In the past, families have turned in DNA enve-
lopes & breeding nomination cards to the office,
staff mailed them in to AKSARBEN and the en-
try process was done manually.
Now, the database accepts animal information
submitted directly by exhibitors including pay-
ments for DNA. Families will have the ability
themselves to edit incorrect information up to the
deadline.
Our office will continue to mail in the DNA en-
velopes to AKSARBEN by the deadline. Once
the information is in the database and has been
validated by Extension Staff, it will then be
available for exhibitors to make State Fair or
AKSARBEN entries.
Please note, any animal entry not in the database
or has not submitted DNA will not be eligible for
State Fair or AKSARBEN.
The website to nominate animals for state fair
and AKSARBEN will be launched in February.
Detailed instructions on how to access and navi-
gate the site will be provided to the families once
we receive them.
Premises ID Numbers
All 4-H and FFA market animals carrying an EID
tag and Sheep and Goats with Scrapie Tags are
required to have a Premises ID. This includes
animals shown at the county level as well. The
procedure is fairly simply. Instructions can be
found at: http://bit.ly/2oe4BT0
New Livestock ID
Requirements for 2018
Market Beef, Feeder Calves &
Bucket Calves:
All county fair market beef, feeder calves and
now bucket calves must all have an EID tag. In
the past, bucket calves have had a separate 4-H
tag but this year all beef are required to have EID
tags. EID tags can be purchased at our office for
$2.00 each.
Goats and Sheep:
*NEW* this year : The official identification
for all classes of goats and sheep is a Scrapie
Tag. No EID tags or 4-H tags are required for
sheep and goats.
Before you can get Scrapie Tags, you must have
a premise ID number and a Flock ID number,
which the Dept of Ag can assign to you. Call
them at 402-434-2300. As long as their funds
last, you can get Scrapie Tags free from them.
They also have a website you can visit at: http://www.nda.nebraska.gov/animal/diseases/scrapie/index.html
If you already have the needed ID numbers, you
can order Scrapie Tags from a vendor of your
choice. You can find a list of vendors, and more
about Scrapies at: http://www.eradicatescrapie.org/
FYI: Dairy goats do not need a Scrapie Tag but
must have a tattoo in the ear (or tail web for the
LaMancha breed) which corresponds to a herd ID
assigned by the USDA or is accompanied by a
breed registration paper listing the current owner.
As in the past: All breeding beef will need a tattoo.
All swine will be required to have ear notch-
es.
All species need ID sheets, which are due
June 15, 2018.
The year-long Cass County 2018 4-H Calendar
can be found on our website at:
www.cass.unl.edu
4-H Club Committees
Just as the 4-H Council uses committees to get work planned
and completed, the well-organized 4-H club will make use of
committees to carry out certain parts of the club program. 4-H
Club committees may include 4-H’ers and also parents.
A “Special Committee” is one appointed to do a certain job,
such as a club tour.
“Standing Committees” are those appointed to serve for the
entire year. Examples of standing committees and duties they
may perform include:
Membership Committee -- Tells others about 4- H and
brings new members into the club. Helps start a new club.
Citizenship Committee -- Responsible for the flag salutes,
patriotic programs, community service to others.
Health and Safety Committee -- Encourages club to plan
special health and safety activities such as the home fire
check.
Recreation Committee -- Club recreation conducted by a
small group of members. Each committee should have a
chairman.
A report of progress of each committee may be given at the
business meetings.

4-H Fund Raising Guidelines
Money raised in the name of 4-H must be
used for 4-H purposes.
4-H fund raising projects need to be ap-
proved by the Cass County 4-H Council.
4-H fund raising should only be conducted
to meet a 4-H club goal. There must be a
definite plan to account for funds raised.
Generally, money raised during the year
should be spent that same year, so there is
no need for a 4-H club to have a savings
account. 4-H Clubs should have a checking
account rather than a savings account.
All moneys received from 4-H fund raising
programs, except those necessary to pay
reasonable expenses, must be spent to fur-
ther the 4-H mission.
Please check with the Extension staff before
putting the 4-H name or 4-H Clover on any
flyer or item you intend to sell for profit.
Questions, please contact the Cass County
Extension Office at 402-267-2205.
Assist Joslyn Stamp with her great
Community Service Project:
Joslyn has developed a community service
project collecting dried-
out/used-up markers,
highlighters, and dry
erase markers. The
markers will be recycled
into clean-burning fuel.
All old and dried-out
markers can be brought
to the Extension Office.

YQCA 2018 - Youth for the Quality Care of Animals Page 9
Nebraska 4-H requires all youth enrolled in livestock projects to complete annual quality assurance training
through Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA).
YQCA is a national multi-species quality assurance program focused on three core pillars:
food safety,
animal well-being, and
character development.
YQCA training is completed online through self-directed courses. Each module takes approximately 20 to 30
minutes if you watch the instructional videos.
Login Instructions
In order for the 4-Hers to access YQCA online training their file in 4-H Online must be active. Visit the YQCA log-
in page to begin. Select "Sign in with 4HOnline" and select "Nebraska 4-H Youth Development" from the
dropdown. Use your family 4HOnline login and password information to access the courses for the active 4-H mem-
bers in your family. Only active members will show in the drop down menu for access to the course. Important to
note: All 4-H members will need to use the 4-H tab and not the FFA tab even if they are members of both organiza-
tions.
Cost
The cost for on-line completion will be $12.00 to be paid on-line. The cost for in-person training will be $3.00, but
4-Hers must register and pay on-line for the in-person sessions. Dates to be announced.
When the 4-Her completes the online training they will need to print off the completion certificate and bring it to
the Extension Office so Counties can manually enter the results into their 4-H online file.
4-Hers that do face to face (F2F) training will need to print off their certificate of completion after the instructor
verifies they have participated in a F2F training session.
If a 4-Her is trained by an FFA Advisor they will need to bring a certificate of verification to the Extension Of-
fice. A certificate is being designed and will be provided to FFA Advisors.
Requirements
Nebraska 4-H youth ages 8-18, who are enrolled in any of the livestock projects listed below, are required to com-
plete the YQCA online course annually. The deadline to complete your annual YQCA training in Cass County is
June 15th, 2018 for county fair exhibition. 4-H members who exhibit at the Nebraska State
Fair or AKSARBEN will need to have their YQCA training requirements met by the date of entry for those respec-
tive shows.
Youth enrolled in any of following projects or project areas will need to complete YQCA training: Beef (bucket
calf, feeder calf, breeding beef, market beef), Dairy Cattle, Goat (breeding meat goat, dairy goat, meat goat and oth-
ers), Poultry, Rabbit, Sheep (breeding sheep, market sheep), and Swine (breeding swine, market swine)
A Very Helpful PowerPoint
A very helpful PowerPoint to assist you when completing YQCA can be found on our website at: https://extension.unl.edu/

New Cass County t-shirt design ...
The Cass County 4-H Council is looking for a fun new 4-H t-shirt design for Cass County!
We’ve had a couple designs turned in. Before we choose one, we’d like to encourage each
club to submit a design for the council to consider.
What should the design reflect? Something that represents Cass County 4-H, 4-H in general,
the spirit of 4-H, the fun of 4-H, and/or the why of 4-H! The 4-H Council will choose one
design to print on t-shirts, which will then be for sale this spring.
Deadline: March 15th, so we can have them ready for the next Council meeting, which will
be held March 19th.
Submit your club’s design to Tracy. Bring it to the office, or email it to [email protected].

Cool things to know ….
The purpose of the Nebraska 4-H Foundation’s Governor’s Agricultural Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA,) is to recognize 4-H clubs for the work of the individuals in the club and the commu-nity service work of the entire club. The intent is to increase 4-Hers’ awareness of agricultural careers and entice some of them toward such careers. This is an opportunity for 4-H to support our agricultural roots while we help 4-H members expand the career possibilities they are considering. Recognition is in the form of $500 checks issued to the club’s treas-ury to be used as described in the award application form completed by the club. Examples of fundable programs in-clude: conference or workshops for others in the community, trips or tours for club members, community improvement projects in the club’s hometown, campus visits, fairgrounds enhancements, intergenerational programs, and the devel-opment of youth councils. In order to be considered for the award, please tell us more about the project you have planned. Please keep answers to one page. Note: All funded projects are required to submit a summary of their project, preferably with pictures, to the Nebraska 4-H Foundation upon its completion (by November 30, 2018). The application can be found on-line at: http://ne4hfoundation.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/2018-Gov-Ag-Exc-App.pdf
