If you’re looking for something green and fresh, stop by the farmers market in the north parking lot of Church of the Holy Apostles. The market is open every Saturday, rain or shine. With the current housing boom, the City of Katy needs to develop land for commercial use to keep up with the demands of one of the most educated and diverse populations in the country. One of the many projects on the city's wish list is a proposed 55,000 square foot convention center and parking garage to be located on property northwest of Katy Mills at Kingsland and Katy-Fort Bend Road. “We're hoping that whole area picks up. Its right next to Katy Mills Mall," says City Administrator Byron Hebert. "The more shoppers that we have, the more service tax we have, the more economic impact for us.” The city owns the 80 acres of land that has been used as a retention pond for Katy Mills. Over the last 15 years it has become a small, natural wetland area with vegetation and wild life that could be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. The estimated $1.3 million two-mile walking trail surrounding the pond would be the first of many pieces of the plan that would need to fall into place to create the city's vision. The city would need to purchase 10 of the 45 acres northwest of the pond from the land owner, the Simpkins Group, to be used for the proposed convention center and garage. Before the city purchases the land and begins construction on the boardwalk, they will need to finalize details with the developer about how the land will be used. The city hopes to work with the current owner to help develop the remaining parcel of land to be used for a flagship full-service hotel as well as a mixed use office, residential, retail, dining and a green space. With the proximity of the Katy Prairie, there are migrating birds in the area. Kayce L. Reina, Director of Marketing & Public Relations for the City of Katy says that they are working with environmentalists to determine what vegetation should be planted to support a variety of birds and fish. The dozen or so alligators in the area shouldn't be a problem as long as people don't feed them. Texas Parks and Wildlife only removes them if they become a danger or a nuisance. If people don't feed them it shouldn't be a problem. After some confusion when the boardwalk was originally announced Mayor Fabol Hughes released a statement denying that the boardwalk would be something akin to the Kemah Boardwalk. "The Katy boardwalk is estimated to be approximately two miles long and consists of planks of lumber built around the entire wetlands that people can walk on and admire the wildlife, etc. We intend to designate it as a park. End of story." "It will be some type of nice walking path, suitable for walking or biking," city administrator Byron Hebert said. Nearby residents are waiting to see how the plans will affect them. Berms were built to keep down the noise from the mall, but the new project will be just yards away from the homes. “We are looking at the possibility of building a convention center and parking garage adjacent to the wetlands,” said Hughes, “but that’s still in early planning stages.” $1.3M Boardwalk First Step in Development of Proposed Convenon Center © Debi Beauregard/www.debibeauregard.zenfolio.com By Debi Beauregard Halal Meat Available Create Your Own Stir Fry! 20940 Katy Fwy @ Westgreen Katy 77449 281-398-3658 Fax 281-398-3720 Coupon Coupon 1/2 OFF Buy One Dinner Bowl Get 1/2 OFF 2nd Bowl Dinner Dine-In Only. By Tom Behrens The Katy Family YMCA’s Camp Cinco, located at 15050

Cinco Park Rd (behind Creech Elementary), is not only a great summer youth camp but it’s also a shining example of what can be accomplished through cooperation and sharing with community volunteers. The 200 plus acre camp features such activities as a high and low ropes course, archery, sports, nature trails and many other indoor and outdoor activities.

Now in its ninth year, the camp is managed under the leadership of Regional Child Care Director, Shawn Harmon. One of his missions is to get the word out to the community, inviting them to come and see what a great place Camp Cinco is and how they can partner with the Y to help in its improvement and maintenance goals.

“It first really started with Exxon,” said Harmon. “They contacted us about sending some volunteers out and doing some of the work that we needed done. One of the volunteers from Exxon, who attended Kingsland Baptist, went back to his church and got Kingsland involved.”

Compassion Katy, a group of local churches which was already helping refugees from Hurricane Katrina, decided they wanted to come out and volunteer also. “Soon they were coming out more than once a year and decided that Camp Cinco would be a regular yearly event that has expanded in so many great ways,” said Harmon.

“We have some really big groups, some small groups. The Church Without Walls, the Boy Scouts, Grace Fellowship UMC, and Walmart of Sealy also comes out to help. Walmart comes out once or twice a year. Kingsland and Compassion Katy are probably two of our biggest supporters.”

Most of the work the volunteers do is general clean up and maintenance such as painting, building and maintaining hiking trails, spreading mulch and constructing garbage containers. “We have a need and people do it,” said Harmon.

Cinco Ranch Church of Christ, 6655 S. Mason Rd., is right down the road from the entrance to Camp Cinco. Aaron

Walling, the preaching minister at the church, explained that some of his church members originally became involved with the camp by doing general maintenance work. “Shawn came about three years ago to ask me if the kids at Camp Cinco could come to our church in the evenings to wait for their parents to pick them up. It’s hot, late in the afternoon and there is no air conditioning at the camp. The kids could use some relief from the heat, plus it made it easier for the parents to pick the kids up at our church than having to drive down the dusty gravel road into the camp. Logistically, it seemed like it would be a good match and it has worked out great. The Y has reciprocated by allowing our church to use the facility for different events,” explained Walling.

Oscar Gilbert, who now heads up the volunteer effort after Harmon was promoted, says there are about 20-30 volunteer groups who come out to Camp Cinco on a regular basis. “Compassion Katy comes out two different weekends each year. John Davis, the youth minister at Kingsland Baptist, brings groups that do a lot of work through the year.” For more information about the camp and its volunteer opportunities, contact Gilbert at 281-392-5055.

Steve, Alex, Logan and Brook Ingram show a little community spirit by painting structures at Camp Cinco.

Katy ISD Board of Trustees Meeting Summary: June 2014 A Destination District By Henry Dibrell

There are many reasons Katy ISD continues to be a destination district. Among them are the strong academic and extracurricular programs, quality educators, and the District’s proactive planning for safety and growth.

It is truly rewarding to see the results of our students’ dedication, imagination and talent. During our June 23 Regular Board meeting, we were able to hear from students on the Cinco Ranch High School “CRyptonite” Robotics Team 624. The team presented their accomplishments from the 2014 season, and gave a demonstration of this year’s robot, “Sidewinder.” The commitment and leadership exhibited by these students is a testament to the quality learning experiences the District provides.

Another element that attracts residents to Katy ISD is the dedicated faculty and staff. To help recruit new teachers and retain experienced teachers, the Board approved the 2014-2015 salary schedule for teachers, making our District more competitive with neighboring school districts. As part of this plan, the base salary for a first-year teacher will increase 4.26 percent, and current Katy ISD teachers in their fifth year will receive an increase of 7.09 percent as they enter their sixth year with the District. I am pleased to share that no matter where our teachers are in the salary schedule, they will see an increase in their pay.

The Board also addressed concerns raised by community members involving the impact of a future Walmart developers have proposed to be located across from Rylander Elementary. In response to these concerns, the Board approved a letter to the Honorable Judge Robert E. Hebert to consider a prohibition of alcohol sales within 1,000 feet of a Katy ISD building. The Katy ISD Operations Department will also review and monitor safety concerns in the area and make recommendations to the appropriate local authority as needed.

As part of the District’s proactive safety and security plans, the Board also approved agreements with Fort Bend County and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center. These agreements will allow the District to provide shelter and supplies to citizens during or after a disaster, and will benefit Katy ISD students, parents and community members without a direct cost to the District.

Finally, the Board discussed planning for growth and the 2014 bond. Katy ISD Chief Operations Officer, Tom Gunnell provided an update on the Bond Committee process. After nine meetings and many long hours, the Bond Committee is drawing closer to finalizing projects to be considered for the 2014 bond package.

This coming school year, Katy ISD will operate 60 campuses, and have nearly 70,000 students. As student enrollment in the district grows and local businesses throughout the community continue to expand, I look forward to serving as Vice President of the Board of Trustees and ensuring that our District maintains its reputation for providing quality learning experiences and top-rated programs.

Memorial Hermann Prevention and Recovery Center (PaRC), in partnership with University of Houston-Clear Lake Counseling Services, will hold a free special event featuring a well-known expert in the field of substance abuse in teens and adults.

PaRC Program Director Stacie Allphin will speak about the warning signs and symptoms of drug use, practical ways to address the use, determining when to seek help, and an overview of the various levels of treatment offered for individuals in Houston. The presentation will also highlight trends in teen drug abuse and practical ways to help teenagers grow up substance-free.

The event takes place on Tuesday, July 15, 6 - 7:30 p.m. in the Student Services Building Lecture Hall at University of Houston-Clear Lake located on 2700 Bay Area Blvd. Parents, health care providers, and community members are invited.

According to National Institute on Drug Abuse, by the time they are seniors, almost 70 percent of high school students will have tried alcohol, half will have taken an illegal drug, and more than 20 percent will have used a prescription drug for a nonmedical purpose.

In today’s world, parents must also understand the dangers of designer drugs, which are most popular among high school age kids and young adults. Recently, five young people in Montgomery County overdosed on a synthetic hallucinogen sometimes called N-bomb that can cause violent behavior, increased heart rate, nausea, seizures, and even death.

The Harris County Police Department will be on hand with samples of what popular illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia look like and to answer questions.

“Substance use is a widespread issue and it’s affecting people from various age groups and backgrounds,” said Allphin. “We’ve found many people don’t know when to seek help or the options available to them. Houston is recognized for its wide variety of substance abuse programs; we want families to have a better grasp on what to do and where to turn when a loved one is facing addiction.”

Incorporating the newest medical approaches along with proven treatment models and methodologies, PaRC is Houston's premier drug and alcohol rehabilitation center for adults and teens. PaRC offers award-winning experience and deep expertise towards alcohol and drug treatment. Services include detox, residential treatment, intensive outpatient programs, family services, aftercare, 12-step meetings, and an alumni association.

PaRC is one of the few hospitals in the United States to partner with key community agencies to offer a transitional, substance abuse rehabilitation program tailored specifically for teens and young adults.

Parents and community members are encouraged to attend this free event to learn more about detecting and responding to substance abuse issues. For more information about Memorial Hermann PaRC, visit http://parc.memorialhermann.org.

Summer is here, which is the perfect time to help the Katy Prairie Conservancy (KPC) with its Great Grow Out (GGO) program, a citizen conservation project involving scouts, schools, garden clubs, families, and individuals. GGO is expanding its efforts for 2014, and individuals of all ages can participate.

“People may not know that bees and monarch butterflies are rapidly vanishing from our ecosystem,” says Christine Mansfield, conservation education specialist with Katy Prairie Conservancy and coordinator of GGO. “Native grasses, wildflowers and shrubs are critical to the survival of these amazing creatures, along with many other types of wildlife on the prairie, as they provide food, water and shelter.”

With seeds provided by KPC, folks from kindergarteners to retirees can grow and nurture native plants at home that will directly benefit our insect and animal friends. Plants will be used in restoration projects on the Katy Prairie, as well as at local pocket prairies and the Prairie Builder Schools and Parks program.

KPC will be distributing seeds for the Great Grow Out now through September. You can select which seeds you would like to plant from a list on the GGO web page, where instructions for the project are provided. Contact Mansfield at KPC at [email protected] or 713-523-6135 to request seeds.

Currently, KPC has American Basketflower, Rattlesnake Master, Rosinweed, Silver Bluestem, and Texas Coneflower seeds available for the Great Grow Out. Volunteers provide water, soil, pots, and time during the “grow out” period . “Another benefit of the program is that we encourage our growers to keep some plants for their yard or garden to invite butterflies and other colorful native pollinators to their home habitat," says Mansfield.

After a few months of growing, the plants are returned to the Katy Prairie Conservancy for future replanting. Volunteers can choose to participate in various planting days on the Katy Prairie or at a public park or a local school.

“What an excellent opportunity for people to become fully invested to help enhance prairie conservation in the entire Houston region,” says Mary Anne Piacentini, executive director of the Katy Prairie Conservancy. “This is a project that can be done at home, requires minimal maintenance but tender care, and yields tangible benefits for our environment. It is also an excellent educational experience for children outside of the classroom.”

The Katy Prairie Conservancy is a nonprofit land trust dedicated to preserving an ecologically vital tallgrass prairie and associated wetlands area on Houston's far west side for the enjoyment and benefit of all.

With the World Cup futbol33 taking the headlines the last couple of weeks, another football has been going on—7-on-7 high school football. Tournaments have been going on all across Texas this summer. At the Cinco Ranch tournament, Cinco Ranch clinched a spot in the state tournament with a 32-6 semifinal victory against Mayde Creek and edged Bellaire 8-7 for the tournament championship.

To be eligible to play in the Adidas Texas 7-on-7 State Championship a team must finish either first or second in one of the tournaments.

Representing Katy are Katy, Cinco Ranch and Seven Lakes High Schools. Cinco Ranch was the state champion in 2002 and Taylor finished second to Tyler Lee in 2004.

Spartan head coach, Lydell Wilson says 7-on-7 gives a chance for the kids to play during the summertime and build camaraderie together. “It gives the quarterbacks and receivers a chance to try to get on the same page throwing the passing routes, but it also allows our defensive backs and linebackers a chance to cover some athletes.”

Seven-on-Seven is not a UIL sport and does not allow the regular coaching staff contact with a 7-on-7 team, although coaches can sit in the end zone at games and observe their players. “Playing and coaching is strictly voluntary,” said Pat Dowling of Katy ISD Athletics. “Players can’t be required to participate. They might be encouraged to do a lot of things over the summer to get themselves prepared for the season, but it’s all strictly voluntary.” The coach for the Spartans 7-on-7 team is Shane Hibbeler.

Coach Hibbeler explains that 7-on-7 is a lot of passing and defense against the pass. “We try to use most of the Seven Lakes’ offense and defense so that they can get some experience before the season starts, to get the kids reps in the off-season.”

Typically your starting 7-on-7 offense is your typical skill position players from the fall team—running back, receivers and tight ends. “We are going to run the ball, throw the ball. It gives you a snapshot of the personnel,” said Hibbeler.

Alan Sims is training to set a new Masters record for the USA in the long jump for his age group. He is 50 years old. The current record is 21 feet, 3/4 inch. His longest jump this year is 20 feet, 8 inches. In 1987 he set the record for his age group at 25 feet, 7 inches...”many years ago and a lot of pounds lighter,” said a chuckling Sims.

He also runs track, earning gold medals in 100 and 200 meters.

Track and Field records are nothing new to the Katy resident. In 2006 he finished first in the Indoor Nations Long Jump. In 2008 he was the World Masters Long Jump champion. He calculates it will probably be in September in Louisiana when he will take a shot at the record. “I have been coaching my daughter’s track team and haven’t had time to get to a meet myself.” His 13 year old daughter Mia is a sprinter running the 100, 200 and 400. His 16 year old son, Akili throws the discus. Does mom also compete in track and field? “No,” said Sims. “She’s just a track and field mother.”

Sims says his track career began when he was nine years old when he ran for Missouri City Middle School. While at Willowridge High School he was an All American long jumper. He didn’t run track or long jump in college, choosing to concentrate on his education. In 1987 one of his friends from high school was training with the Houston Elite track club. “I knew the coach and I started training with the Elite,” said Sims. In 1988 Sims met the B standard for the Olympic trials long jump.

Besides coaching his daughter’s track team, he practices three days a week either after work or on the weekends. What’s his attraction to the long jump?

“I just realized at an early age I was blessed with a talent. It’s just being able to succeed, be able to show my kids that you can accomplish anything you put your mind to. That’s what drives me every day.

“The most important thing to be successful in track is that you have to be disciplined, stick with the workouts, watch what you eat, especially now that I am older, and trust your training. Proper nutrition is important. You can’t eat at McDonalds all the time. You have to realize that you’re not going to have overnight success. It comes with hard work and staying the course. Track and field has put discipline in my life and allowed me to accomplish things in my life in my work and athletics.”

“We try to give them the playbook from the fall, but there are alternate routes and other things we use in 7-on-7 that won’t work in the fall”.

Hibbeler says he’s excited about what he sees in the Spartans. “Last year we had challenges put in our path. This team is more dynamic, more athletic than last year. I think the fans will see a different team from an offensive perspective. We’ve got talented receivers who didn’t play

last year, who will play this year.“On defense, we return most of our players. We are

faster than we were last year. We are really excited. This will be the second year the kids are in a certain system, important so they can understand their assignments.”

The State Championship games will be played July 10-12 at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex, 3101 Harvey Road, College Station, TX, 77845.

Seven Lakes Spartan 7-on-7 team will play in the State Championship at College Station July 10-12.

He Wants To Set A New Long Jump Record

Josh May is the new girls’ varsity basketball coach this coming school year at Mayde Creek High School. He replaces Stephen Reese whose Ram team last year finished the season at 6-22. The last over .500 season was the 2010-11 season when the Rams went 22-11 overall. May is moving from an assistant coaching position at Westside High School, (HISD). While working with head coach Troy Gillespie, the Wolves finished in first place in 5A Region III District 20 with a record of 11-1 and 25-8 overall.

May played varsity basketball for three years at Glen Rose High School in Glen Rose, TX. From there he went on to Texas A&M University, but did not play basketball. The 26 year old has been an assistant coach at Westiside High School for the last three years.

May stated there were two reasons he moved from Westside – a chance to move up to a head coaching job, and the challenge that the Mayde Creek girls’ basketball program presents. “For the last couple of years the girls’ program has suffered a little bit of a setback and I wanted to come in, meet the challenge, change

some things around, and see if we can’t get the team back on the right track as far as being more competitive.”

His plan: Instill a competitive spirit and solid defensive play.“The Rams had a tough season last year, going 6-22, but I

have been able to see some of the kids and see what I have to work with. I think we have a lot of talent moving forward. I think the biggest thing that I’m going to bring is just instilling a competitive spirit into the girls and getting them to play to their maximum effort. I found that we have good size and great athleticism.”

Besides focusing on instilling a competitive spirit, May also plans to focus on the defensive side of the game and teach fundamentals. “I plan to start there and work my way out, focus on the fundamentals. As we get more successful with the fundamentals and we get the maximum effort out of the girls, we can do something special. Each player will be evaluated to see what we have. I am trying to build a brand that the Mayde Creek community can be proud of, come and support the girls as they play hard and compete.”

Summer Jam Weekends

Delicious fried fish, superb hushpuppies and “to die for” designer fries were the order of the day at the Katy Elks Lodge when the Youth Committee, under the direction of Chair Kelly Minnick and co-chair Matthew Minnick, held its first Semi-Annual fish fry Sunday, June 29. Previously this had been an annual event in January each year but by adding a June event to the offerings, it has now become semi-annual with the intent to be

able to provide more and better scholarships to Katy’s young people.

If you missed Sunday, plan now to be at the January event. Your support goes directly to the community in the form of scholarships which are presented each May during National Elk Youth Week.

The Katy Elks thanks each of you who were able to attend. If you could not be present but would like to donate to this

important endeavor, please contact Kelly through the lodge (281-392-2763) or send a check to her attention with youth Scholarships on the memo of the check (Katy Elks, 1050 Katy Fort-Bend Road, Katy, 77493).

One of the previous scholarship winners, Sydney Anderson granddaughter of Elk Wayne Harper, was present to assist with serving additional tea, more food and provide a friendly atmosphere for diners. This is only one thing that reinforces the Elk motto: Elks Care – Elks Share!

Hurricane season is here once again, and many people along the Texas Gulf Coast have been affected by these damaging storms over the years, in one way or another. Fort Bend County Libraries, in conjunction with the Fort Bend Historical Commission, would like to record these memories and experiences, and is seeking people who are willing to share their story.

An “Oral-History Fair” will take place on Saturday, June 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond. Appointments will be set up in advance so that people can arrange a specific time for their interview. Please call at your earliest convenience to arrange an appointment time.

Representatives from the library and volunteers from the historical commission will conduct the individual interviews, which will take approximately 20-30 minutes each and will be recorded on audiotape. After the interviews have been done, the recordings will be transcribed and archived by the Fort Bend Historical Commission.

The person being interviewed will have an opportunity to review and approve their story after it has been transcribed, in case there is any clarification they would like to add. Quotes from the interviews may be used in an upcoming exhibit at the Fort Bend County Museum.

“The interviews will be about the impact that Gulf Coast hurricanes have had on our lives and on our communities,” says Megan Moore, Adult Programming Manager for Fort Bend County Libraries. “If your life has been impacted by a Gulf Coast hurricane, if you moved to Fort Bend County because of a hurricane evacuation, or if you have an interesting story to share about surviving a hurricane, we would love to record your story!”

To set up a time to be interviewed, contact Megan Moore before June 28 at 281-344-3880 or email [email protected].
