Gear Up! College FairOn Friday September

30, one hundred colleges and universities from across the country set up tables in the LHS Field House for the GEAR UP! College Fair. Every senior from across the campus attended the fair for an hour on Friday morning to meet admissions offi-cers and learn about the schools. “There was a great variety of schools from the area and outside the area. I learned about schools I had never heard of before” said senior Alejandra Negron, who is now con-sidering the University of New England, Suffolk, and Harvard, among others. Ricardo Santana agreed: “Schools aren’t as scary as they seem.” he said. “It opened my eyes up. There were some schools I never thought about, like Bryant University.”

The fair was a big project, said Gear Up!’s Monaliza Pena. “We worked a lot of hours and made hundreds of phone calls to many colleges and universities. It was hard but we are really happy with our results” she said. “There were about 100 colleges there. We’re really hap-py. The kids were amazing and were very prepared with a lot of ques-tions that was given to them during their Seminar classes.” Gear-Up’s Esther Peralta added, “I enjoyed seeing all of the seniors interacting

with the college representatives and asking questions regarding GPA and SAT requirements for their institution. Our students are very prepared and gearing up for their

college applications. It was awe-some. I am very proud of our LHS students; they behaved very well and had amazing questions for the

colleges.”

Senior Leslie Marrero echoed the impor-tance of the Fair: “I feel like a lot of kids would not apply to college

because they don’t know about them. Getting to meet people who went to these colleges and work at them opens doors.”

9GA Tailgate Party

9GA hosted its annual Tailgate party before the football game against North Andover. Student government sold treats and Gato-

rade while face painting to prep the students for the football game. Mr. Landrum along with some students hosted the BBQ while the

9GA pep band performed during the event!

PEP RALLY!

On Friday September 30, juniors and seniors from across the campus participated in the annual LHS Pep Rally for Homecoming Weekend. They enjoyed performances by the LHS Dance Program, LHS Cheer, and Pep Band. Participants in all of the fall 2016 sports teams were recognized, including Field Hockey, Football, Boys and Girls Soccer, Girls Volleyball and Boys

and Girls Cross Country. Spirited competitions took place between the Football team and the other teams in the Cone Run, and in the Football Toss between the Class of 2017 and the Class of 2018. At the end of the rally, the 2016 homecoming Princesses, as elected by their peers, were crowned by the building principals. Later in the evening, the Princesses were also honored

at the annual Homecoming Football game at home versus the North Andover Scarlet Knights. The National Anthem at the game was performed by a group of Girls Ensemble alums who came back to LHS for the game and once again inspired us with their voices.

I’ve been coaching for 28 years with 12 being the Head Coach at Lawrence High. Between playing and coaching, I’ve been involved in football for more than three quarters of my life. I love the game and to me it is the ultimate team sport. Our captains are Darryl Munoz, a four-year starter, and Michael Maysonet, Lenny Then, and Hector Javier, all two-year starters. As far as team goals, we take each game week by week. No matter what the result is after a Friday night game, our attitude is to wake up the next morning and turn our focus to the next opponent. We always want to make the state playoffs and compete for a championship, but we focus on the team we are playing week to week.

I am a firm believer that the way you act and conduct yourself off the field will reflect in your performance on game day. We have specific team rules that the players must follow and they will be subject to disciplinary actions if they break any of those rules. A couple of things I’m

most proud of is the number of former players attending college and playing football. Also, all our veteran players have met their academic eligibility requirements for the past few seasons and this past summer none them had to attend summer school.

“I’ve learned that no matter how old you are, you should never stop being creative.” These are the words of Karina Champy, one of sixteen LHS students enrolled in Writing Lab, a new elective service learning course available to 11th & 12th graders from across the campus. The course began with an investigation into the purposes of education and the role of creativ-ity. A series of writing and arts workshops, some conducted by outside visitors including Marquis Victor of the Elevated Thought Foundation and Lou Bernieri of Andover Breadloaf, helped the high school writers discover their own abilities as writers. Working in teams of five, the students now conduct writing workshops for younger students, visiting fourth grade classes at the South Lawrence East School and kindergartners at the Breen Early Childhood Center. Champy

says that “the coolest part of the class is working with the little kids and getting to know them.” Classmate Jairon Rivera enjoys the class discussions, as well as the service work. “It’s crazy to think that I am the one teaching them” he remarked after a recent trip to the South Lawrence East, “giving them motivation.” The students reflect on their work in debriefing sessions back in class and are de-veloping on-line port-folios of their work. SLES fourth-grade teacher Sharon

Chronowski, reported that her students were “highly enthused” after the first visit. The class is taught by Mr. Gorham, who hopes to expand the model to more students in the future. “Cross-age tutoring experiences are a win-win situation” he said, “if we approach them thoughtful-ly, everyone benefits.”

News From ENLACE

On Friday, September 30th, ENLACE Year 2 students hosted candidate for State Representative

Juana Matias. They invited her to visit and speak on the topic of “leadership,” which is their big

interdisciplinary theme this year. Ms. Matias shared her story with students, delivering this message: “I see it as my duty to open the door for other people to have the same opportunities I did.” Stu-dents prepared questions for Ms. Matias ahead of time; they asked her about her stances on local issues, such as homelessness in Lawrence, and national issues in-cluding the presidential election.

ENLACE started its after-school Homework Club on September

26th. Every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, students can stay after school to complete their homework and receive extra support

and tutoring from their teachers.

Each day has seen an increase in attendance. So far, over 40 students have attended homework club and completed more than 150 assignments! Keep up the hard work!

9GA Student Government

The 9GA Student government met with Mr. Cote throughout

the week to discuss new ideas and ways to improve the school.

Students created pro-posals and discussed in detail their vision for the school year. They were in awe of the amount of

positivity and support they re-ceived from their school leader.
