May is definitely going to be a high performance month for the members of the
Mustang Club of Greater Kansas City!! I encourage all members (now approaching 200 fam-
ily memberships) to par"cipate in this month’s ac"vi"es.
Coming off of April’s excep"onally successful inaugural Cruise Night at Sam’s Club at
the Legends, addi"onal modifica"ons have been made to further enhance May’s event.
We’ve ordered good weather, so join in and tell all of your car enthusiast friends not to miss
it!!
Included in this newsle/er is the schedule of events for the Wounded Warrior Fami-
ly Services 2015 High Five Tour which will be in Kansas City over Memorial Day weekend.
There are 12 listed events, 4 of which are designated as “club events,” and members are
certainly welcome to a/end any of the listed events. MCGKC has been a major par"cipant,
host, and supporter of the High Five Tour for several years, and this year is certainly no ex-
cep"on with an even larger role in the coordina"on and planning of an increased number of
events and ac"vi"es. Your par"cipa"on and support is very much appreciated.
As I reflect on the spirit and the nature of MCGKC, the Wounded Warrior Family
Service organiza"on and High Five Tour serve as a capstone of our belief in the American
freedoms our servicemen and women so bravely protect, our family values, our charitable
focus, and the overall camaraderie of our members. I truly look forward to par"cipa"ng in
this very significant series of events with our “Mustang Family” members!
In addi"on to these key “near term” events, it is my pleasure to announce the
awarding of the 2017 MCA Grand Na"onal Show to MCGKC by the MCA Board of Directors
this past weekend. For those who remember the Ed Sullivan Show, this will be a “Really Big
Shoooooow” and planning for it will commence immediately. Thanks to Jim Peterson for
leading the development commi/ee, Doye Ewert for his MCA representa"on on our behalf,
Lorne Willard for his prior na"onal show exper"se and development of key applica"on
components, and to the commi/ee as a whole for working closely with the Overland Park
Conven"on Center and Sheraton Hotel to secure their proposals and commitments. This
will replace the club’s 2017 annual Mustang and Ford Show, so don’t hesitate to volunteer
now to serve and par"cipate in this major Na"onal event HOSTED BY US!!!
And remember, please see Sally’s Social Director Report in the newsle/er for other
event highlights for both April and May.
Over the past year and a half I’ve enjoyed finding Ford marke"ng slogans that per-
tain to the dedica"on and service of the club’s officers and to that of the general member-
ship’s high level of par"cipa"on and support of our many ac"vi"es and undertakings. The
Henry Ford quote below seems especially appropriate in view of our collec"ve involvement
with the above major events. As club members, you’ve proved the validity of Mr. Ford’s
statement!!
“Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is suc-
cess.” – Henry Ford RJ

A special message for you from the Mustang Club of Greater Kansas City’s High Five Tour Commi/ee
In 2012 with the blessing of our Board of Directors, our club par"cipated in a very memorable High Five Tour Caravan that afforded us the opportunity to sup-
port a wounded soldier. Many of us will never forget that special day. It was on that day that WWFS announced a pledge in excess of $150,000 to help finance
the construc"on of their first smart home that was presented to Tyler Huffman a United States Marine in Jefferson City, MO. With the help of volunteers na"on-
wide, the WWFS gives back to those who sacrificed so much for our freedom like Tyler and other service men and women and their families. Tyler is a special
human being and we hope to see him again this year, if not in Kansas City then surely Jefferson City, MO on May 26th
. I’m proud to say that Tyler is living a pro-
duc"ve life; the support he’s received has elevated his spirit and enhances his ability to pursue his personal freedom. We thought you’d want to know Tyler
Huffman and learn what he has to say…in his own words.
Hello my name is Tyler Huffman. I am a member of the PGR, ALR motorcycle clubs and we ride in anything veteran related and to escort funerals for the fallen
soldiers. I may be in a wheel chair but that don't stop me from riding ATVs, my Harley, along with hun"ng and fishing. Just because you’re in a chair doesn't
mean that you’re limited.
I joined the marines Aug 20th 2007. I went to boot camp in MCRD San Diego. I was sta"oned with 3/5 Darkhorse India Co first and only unit. We were deployed
to the 31st MEU, and in 2009 we were supposed to go to Iraq but the plans changed at the last minute. My son was born June 26, 2009. I was in Australia at the
"me. I didn't get home "ll he was two months old. I was home for about a year before we leT to go to Afghanistan. Sagin Providence was the town that we were
told that we were going to be sta"oned out of and that no other American force had been there since the war started. The Bri"sh were there but they never
patrolled so the Taliban put bombs all over the place and pre/y much ran the area. So as you can picture it, it was very hard just to get out of the gate without
being shot or blown up. It took us three months just to clear a area around the compounds enough for us to patrol and try to keep the area safe. II was finally
wounded Dec 3 2010. I took a sniper round through the chest hiXng my right lung then down through my liver then across my body and out through my lower
spine which has leT me paralyzed from the waist down and unable to walk or feel my legs but I don't let it slow me down and anybody that has an injury, fight
back! Do what you want and don't let anybody say you can’t. If they do, prove them wrong!

Part 2 of our series is about cleaning your car. ATer many years of judging cars at different types of shows, I can say that the lowest
common denominator dis"nguishing the best cars in a class is cleanliness. No ma/er how nice your car is, if it is dirty, you won’t do well.
I’m not going to go into too much detail on cleaning products. Some people use Meguiars, some people use Griots and it is pre/y
useless to try to get into an argument about what cleaning product brand you prefer. What I would suggest though is to be consistent in
brand choice as some brands may not react well with other brands. Here are a few "ps.
• WD-40 is an excellent bug and tar remover. Just make sure you clean it off and wax the spot you clean. It is also a good hand cleaner.
• Stainless steel trim can be cleaned with Mother’s Mag and Aluminum Wheel polish and some #00 steel wool.
• A bath brush with a long handle is excellent for cleaning bugs out of a radiator.
• Rain-X is excellent for your glass. My 65 has single speed wipers. Rain-X helps immensely. I use the cleaner too.
• Clean your "res and dress them with a "re shine. Some of these products can be slimy when the car is driven, so choose wisely.
• To help expedite drying, get an Absorber and a California water blade. The Absorber can also be used as a neck wrap on very hot days.
• Clay bar products are great for cleaning your paint. George is going to demonstrate one at the detailing clinic.
What I will get into though is what to clean. Basically, everything. There are some classes (like daily driver) that don’t get their en-
gine compartment judged or their undercarriage judged. So you need to know what class you’re going to enter your car into and check
back on last months ar"cle to see what is going to be judged. And then if it is judged, it should be clean. A story I tell some"mes is judg-
ing cars in a weekend day deluge of rain. It never stopped and we didn’t want to judge cars standing in the rain for hours. So our team
went out quickly, looked at the "res, wheels, radiator, engine compartment, and at the interior through the windows, taking just a few
minutes on each car with each person ranking the cars on cleanliness. We all came back with the same results. The car with the clean-
est wheels and radiator took first. The one with just a few bugs in the radiator took second and the car with an insect collec"on in the
radiator took third. The rain did finally lessen up and I went back and reconfirmed our findings. So lesson in life, clean your radiator!
Every nook and cranny is fair game when it comes to judging. Door hinges, deck lid hinges, every hard to reach area. EVERYTHING
needs to be clean. Don’t just wipe the dust off of the surface, or off the top of the engine if your car is in a class with the hood up. Clean
the pulleys, the ba/ery tray, wheel wells, everything. In the interior, look up. Look up for hair on the headliner. Clean, clean then clean
it again… Here are a few more "ps.
• Empty your car. It should be empty, including the cup holders, sun visor (take out your garage door opener), back seat, and trunk.
• Take out any aTermarket floor mats. On the late models, if they have a hook to hold them in they are ok, but if you added them, they
should be taken out.
• When using spray cleaners, make sure you don’t mist everyone down wind when spraying. Spray lightly in a small place or spray onto a
rag.
• Watch those doors, hoods and tail light panels, especially if it is windy. We give 1 1/2 spots for good reason. But some"mes even if you
miss your neighbor, you could do serious damage to your own vehicle if a door catches the wind.
• Most cars on the show field are not allowed to have a display (i.e., mirrors under the car, lights, stuffed animals, placards, etc.). There
are many reasons including being in the judges way, unfair advantages over other cars in your class and a danger to blow way and injure
someone or someone’s car. Owners of cars in the Modified classes should have documenta"on of the parts that were added so that
judges can give adequate credit in that class.
• Look high. Look low. Rocker panels and headliners are oTen overlooked.
• The main thing is to go out and just have fun. Meet some people. Winning isn’t everything , being there and enjoying the friendship of
fellow Mustang lovers is what the fun is all about.
Last but not least, clean is subject to interpreta"on. Everyone has their own standards, so set your standards high, as your judge may well
think your car is dirty when you think it is clean. In the end, it is the judge that decides.
Next month we’ll talk about judging e"que/e .
