HEAT STRESS
After 3 or 4 days of temperatures in the 30s, you may find a bird(s)
stretched out on the floor of the cage or aviary and unable to fly
away. If a bird becomes too hot it tightens its feathers and
holds its wings away from its body and will breathe with
its beak open. If it gets too much heat, then it collapses
from heat stress.
Quickly pick-up the bird and transfer it to a cooler, but not cold, cage by itself.
While you have it in your hand, dip its beak into some water and it may drink.
Do not force it to drink or give it drops to the beak. Place it on the floor of the
cage and it will continue to lay still. Disturb as little as possible and continue to
offer it water every hour.
The sooner you spot a bird suffering from heat stress the better, for it left
unattended it will suffer brain damage and die. While it lies on the floor it can
be very lightly sprayed with cold water, but not enough to chill or frighten the
bird. A little sugar in the water offered may help. Handle the bird as little as
possible as the additional stress from handling may cause death.
There is not much else you can do except to remedy why your bird room was
so hot. Cooling sprays on the roof, extra shade, a cooling fan, will all help.
The next day the bird may be dead or acting as though nothing happened.
Cut down on seeds such as oats and the oil seeds until the bird has fully recov-
ered.

As aviculturists we believe we provide adequate care for our birds, that their
well-being is the very foundation of our hobby and as Avicultural societies and
clubs, we inherit a leadership role and a responsibility to guide those involved
towards good and improving practice. It may be time to ask whether we are
providing the leadership expected and whether a sense of responsibility is overt
and drives our actions.
A recent public event drew demining criticism of what appeared to be gross
failure to implement the adopted Code of Practice, citing examples of birds
being presented in conditions described as unacceptable. This criticism extends to
active lobbying for Governmental intervention on the basis that voluntary
regulation simply did not work. This is a risk that we all need to be conscious of
and eliminate by consistently demonstrating good animal husbandry.
It does not matter whether we are involved in competitive exhibition, sales, displays
or private bird-keeping. As individuals we are all practicing animal husbandry
with a responsibility to do it well and as organisations we are responsible for
guiding members and striving for community acceptance and good will.
Not everyone in the community supports bird keeping and we ignore views
contrary to our own at our peril! Many pressures such as urbanisation, financial
difficulties and competing interests threaten the long-term viability of aviculture
with sound animal husbandry being the ultimate defence. If we allow a community
perception of bad practices that are not in the best interests of the birds we
claim to look after we undermine support or tolerance for our hobby.
It is timely for individual bird-keepers and Avicultural organisations in particular
to undertake some serious soul searching. Are we sufficiently concerned for
animal welfare or have we lost sight of this in pursuit of aesthetics, financial
return or other aspects of the hobby? If we believe we are sufficiently concerned for
animal welfare what are we doing to actively promote it and advance standards of
practice? Are we being sufficiently responsible?
If community pressure or lobbying prompts Government to act, what type of
action is most likely? Inevitably, it will be some form of regulation, imposing
standards on the basis that they are now necessary – that self-regulation has
failed. Do we want to be part of the cause for this type of intervention? Are we
willing to allow those around us to make it warranted?
