Selichot and the month of Elul

Rabbi Daniela Szuster

We are in the month of Elul, the last month of the Jewish calendar. The month of Elul is an appropriate time to prepare ourselves for the Iamim Noraim (days of awe) or as they are known in English the High Holy Days.

The word “Elul” is similar to the root of the verb “search” in Aramaic. The Talmud writes that the Hebrew word "Elul" can be an acronym for "Ani L'dodi V'dodi Li" - "I am my be-loved's and my beloved is mine" (Song of Songs 6:3). Elul is seen as a time to search one's heart and draw close to God in prepara-tion for the Day of Judgment, Rosh Hashanah, and the Day of Atone-ment, Yom Kippur.

During the month of Elul, there are a number of special rituals that lead up to the High Holy Days. It is cus-tomary to blow the shofar every morning (except on Shabbat) from Rosh Chodesh Elul (the first day of the month) until the day before

Rosh Hashanah. The blasts are meant to awaken one's spirit and cause each person to inspect his/her soul. In addi-tion, Elul is a time to begin the difficult process of granting and asking for for-giveness.

It is also customary to recite Psalm 27 every day from Rosh Chodesh Elul through Hoshanah Rabbah on Sukkot (in the month of Tishrei).

In addition, it is customary to pray a special prayer which is called “Selichot”. I would like to take this opportunity to examine this special prayer.

Selichah means “forgiveness” and the plural, “selichot”, is used for special prayers that were originally recited on fast days. It was an ancient tradition to fast when the community experi-enced difficult times, and the Selichot were an opportunity to implore God’s mercy and love, confess sins and ask for forgiveness.

Nowadays, the most widespread cus-tom is to recite Selichot during the Penitential season which begins be-fore Rosh Hashanah and concludes with Yom Kippur. This custom is de-rived from an ancient custom of fasting during the six days before Rosh Hashanah and then was extended over the Ten Days of Teshuva (repentance).

The first mention of a distinct order to recite selichot occurs in the book of Midrashim called Tanna de-Vei Eli-yahu Zuta (10th century CE).

It was not until the ninth century that such an order to recite Selichot is found, in the Seder of R. Amram. Over the course of time, a considerable number of selichot were developed by great personalities such as Saadyah Gaon, Gershom b. Judah, Rashi, Solo-mon ibn Gabirol, etc.

There are two customs regarding

MESSAGE FROM RABBI DANIELA

when to start reciting selichot. The Sephardim follow the custom of reciting Selichot for forty days, the time Moses spent on Mount Sinai, from Rosh Chodesh Elul to Yom Kip-pur.

The Ashkenazi custom is to start reciting them on the Motzaei Shab-bat (Saturday night) before Rosh Hashanah. If Rosh Hashanah begins on a Monday or Tuesday, Selichot begins on the Saturday night of the week before Rosh Hashanah, in or-der to make sure that there are at least three days of Selichot. The conclusion of the Sabbath was con-sidered particularly propitious for such prayers for forgiveness, since it marks the beginning of a new week and the completion of a sacred day of rest, prayer and study.

In the Midrash that I mentioned before, Tanna de –Vei Eliyahu Zuta (23), it is written:

“David knew that the Temple was destined to be destroyed and that the sacrificial system would be abol-ished as a result of the iniquities of Israel, and David was distressed for Israel. With what would they effect atonement? And the Holy One Blessed be He said: “When troubles come upon Israel because of their iniquities, let them stand together before Me as one band and confess their iniquities before Me and recite Me the order of Selichot and I will answer them”…

R. Johanan said, “The Holy One blessed be He revealed this in the verse “The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, the Lord, the Lord, a God compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in kind-ness and faithfulness, extending kindness to the thousandth genera-tion, forgiving iniquity, transgres-sion and sin…” (Shmot 34:6-7, which

gives the thirteen divine attributes).

In fact, the fundamental part of the selichot service is the recitation of the “Thirteen Attributes,” which is a list of thirteen attributes of mercy that were revealed to Moses by God after the sin of the golden calf (Exodus 34: 6-7).

It is interesting to point out that King David was distressed, and God gave him a “formula” to pray, a way to ask for mercy and forgiveness. You may know how difficult is to deal with guilt, with many regrets and anger. God, gives us hope and teaches us that there is a way to ask for forgiveness, to be forgiven and to find peace in our hearts.

God understands our feelings of guilt, discomfort and regrets so He provides us with a guide to relieve our souls, purify our hearts and be in peace when we gather together, repent and pray these special pray-ers. This means that there is a way to be forgiven and to renew our-selves.

The prayers of Selichot have the power to transform our regrets into peace and tranquility.

The prayers are poetic and express meaningful thoughts. For example: “We knock at Thy doors, begging for mercy”. This is a time when we des-perately try to come closer to God, knock on His door, and ask for mer-cy for ourselves.

Also, we find in the prayers of Seli-chot, “The soul is Thine, O Lord our God. The body is a gift from Thee”. During Elul and the High Holy Days, we reflect on our lives; life is a gift that we received, and we are com-mitted to take care of it. In addition, you can find the famous

(Continued from page 2)

prayer “Shma koleinu”, “Hear our voice, Adonai our God, be kind, and have compassion for us. Willingly and lovingly accept our prayer… Do not abandon us, Adonai our God, do not distance Yourself from us. Give us a signal of hope….”.

During these days we implore God to listen to us and be very close to us in our hearts.

During these days of the month of Elul, we are preparing ourselves for the Iamim Noraim, terrible days. They are days when we are judged by God and by ourselves. They are also days when we are aware that our lives are finite and fragile. Let’s take this month of Elul as an opportunity to start thinking about the balance of our lives.

I invite you to pray together as a con-gregation the Selichot service on Sat-urday, September 24 at 8 pm at the temple.

As we pray in the Machzor, “May we and the entire of Israel be called to mind and inscribed for life, blessing, sustenance, and peace in the book of life”. Amen.

SOCIAL ACTION THANK YOU

About 190 plates were used to serve meals 135 guests at a Com-munity Meal on Tuesday June 21, 2016 at First Reformed Church at 40 East Orange Street in Lancaster. That means we were able to serve seconds to all who wanted them. Most of the guests were adults both men, women and 4 or 5 children. Milk was the fa-vored beverage! Great big thanks to all of 14 our volunteers who set up tables & chairs, schlepped supplies into the building, prepared food, served food, and cleaned up. Their number includ-ed young adults, women, men and

one non congregant. It was very gratifying to see four of our own young adults step up to do this mitzvah with willing hands and open smiling faces. Their parents and our congregation should be kvelling! Thanks to the 16 people who provided donations of food or funds. It was a community mitzvah and much appreciated. Great job everyone! On the topic of volunteers: when we arrived one man had al-ready set up all of the tables and chairs. He has done this in the past. When guests arrived another man said he would stay to put the tables and chairs back on the racks. When the time came he was joined by two other young men, and a woman with two children. Tables were washed and put away in record time! The remaining food was delivered to Clair House, for resi-dent families, the next day. A special thank you to Sa-mantha Besnoff for helping set up Sign Up Genius. Please let me know how it worked for you. I have been made aware that it is not always user friendly for people using cell phones so included will be e-mail & phone number contacts. The system was convenient to use as it kept up to date lists. The next meal is planned for Tuesday December 20, 2016. Same place and time. Looking for someone to work with me to organ-ize, learn the routine and perhaps organize a meal in the future. Please call or e-mail Sue Wolf to discuss the possibility. On behalf of Social Action, Sue Wolf and Lydia Pease

Dave Ehrlich As we write this article, the dog days of summer are upon us, but by the time you read this, we will be in the waning days of summer with fall right around the corner.

Even though the summer is a more quiet time around the synagogue, your Board of Directors has met a couple of times and various com-mittees have gotten together to carry on their work. We will have also held our open house for mem-bers and prospective members to meet the Rabbis and get to know one another. Hopefully, you were able to attend.

But September is when we will real-ly begin to gear up for the High Holi-days, Religious School, and various synagogue programs.

It would be difficult to carry on the activities of the synagogue without volunteers. If you are involved in volunteering in any way, thank you. If you’re not, please consider help-ing out by serving on one or more synagogue committees. You will find a list of these committees and contacts for them elsewhere in this bulletin. Some of them are well staffed, but others could use your help, and anyone can join a com-mittee. Sisterhood and Men’s Club, which also play a vital role in the life of our synagogue, are also always welcoming of volunteers. Contact information for them can be found elsewhere in the bulletin.

Enjoy the remainder of the summer.

It is with much enthusi-asm and great aspira-tion that I welcome you to the 2016-17 Religious School year! Teachers are preparing, class-

rooms are being put back together after the Summer cleaning, and the Education Committee has been meeting regularly throughout the Summer to discuss and plan for this coming year.

Classes start on Sunday, Sept. 11th. We have some very interesting pro-grams and lessons planned and we hope that by the year’s end, along with Hebrew reading, holiday learn-ing, and other Jewish topics, our students will have developed a deep love and respect for his/her pre-cious heritage, as well as a strong sense of Jewish pride and identity.

If you are interested in enrolling in our school this year or know of a family in the area that might be in-terested it is never too late. Please get in touch with me so that I can talk to you or them about the pro-gram. By word of mouth and social sharing we can show the communi-ty all the great things that Temple Beth El Religious School has to offer.

And for parents as well as those of you that don’t have school age chil-dren, you are always welcomed to the school as volunteers or contrib-utors in some way such as substi-tute or leading a special program or lesson, setup/clean-up activities, organize supplies and books, bring donations of school supplies (folders, notebooks, pencils, etc), or just being there as role models for the children. GIFT SHOP NEWS

Want to spruce up your table for the high holidays?? Maybe with a new challah plate, or honey and apple server?? Perhaps you just want to pick up a hostess gift or a few bottles of kosher wine. Whatever your needs, the gift shop/ wine cellar is ready for you. We will be open on Sunday, Sep-tember 18 and 25 until 12 p.m. You can always visit the gift shop during Janet’s office hours during the week. Since you will be doing much gro-cery shopping in preparation for the holidays, consider purchasing Giant or Weis gift cards from Janet or from myself. Sale of these cards is an ongoing fundraiser for Sister-hood since we receive 2% of the sale of these cards. In fact, sale of these grocery gift cards as well as funds received from purchases you make in the gift shop/wine cellar benefit the temple since money raised by Sisterhood helps to sup-port the Religious School, the tem-ple kitchen and the Fund for the Future, just to name a few. Hag Sameah! Joan Goldman
