MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:

Dear Fellow Rotarians & Friends, I am Back!!! Arrived home late Saturday night. How lovely to be back to warm weather & warm smiling faces at the Moonee Valley Festival in Queen’s Park on Sunday & at the Club Meeting today. Thank you to Peter Condos & his Community Team, especially Alistair Fraser for co-ordinating this event. Thank you to all those Club Members who came along to volunteer on Sunday to make the day the success that is was. It was a day full of Community Spirit. Thank you to everyone who supported the Club in my absence. Few words from me today. Sunil will update the Club below from today’s meeting. Just let me say, we are all thinking & praying for everyone who are struggling with illness, sickness & other things affecting their lives currently. Please remember we are here to assist if you need us. Please just ask!

Also today I thought it was more important to share this update from RI President Ian Riseley….

"As we pass the halfway point of this Rotary year, it’s time to take stock of what we’ve achieved so far and what we still have to do. The Rotary Citation is not only an honour, but also a useful tool that helps clubs plan their service. Club leaders will receive an achievement guide by email in mid-March, with valuable resources to help you reach your goals. If you’re on track to receive a citation, congratulations! Your club is well on its way to a very productive year.

Here in Evanston, we are working hard to achieve the goals that Rotarians have laid out for us. In a Rotary-wide survey of Rotarians and Rotaractors, 90% of respondents asked for improved training, better methods to connect with other clubs, more planning resources, and better online tools. In response, your 2016 Council on Legislation passed a $4 dues increase that is now allowing us to invest in the improved resources, processes, and technology you’ve asked for.

One of the many improvements we’ve made (and are continuing to make) has been to Rotary Club Central, which has been completely redesigned to be faster and easier to navigate. As you already know, this year we are asking all Rotary clubs to submit two numbers to Rotary: the number of volunteer hours worked and the money invested in service. been aligned with the global grant application, and the financial portion will be much simpler to use. We hope these changes will make it easier for clubs to report on the tremendous work that they accomplish through global grants.

One of the new initiatives I’m most excited about in this Rotary year is the Group Cultural Exchange program, a type of Rotary Friendship Exchange that brings together international teams of Rotarians, non-Rotarians, and young professionals. Contact your district’s Rotary Friendship Exchange Committee Chair for more information about exchange opportunities through your district. If you have questions, or an experience you’d like to share, contact [email protected].

Depending on where you are in the world, it may be the right time to plant your club’s trees. Not only is planting trees one of the best things you can do for the environment, it also brings you one step closer to your Rotary Citation. Be sure to plant your trees by 22 April (Earth Day), and take care of the trees you’ve planted until they’re thriving on their own.

There’s still time to register for one of six Presidential Peacebuilding Conferences designed to help us better understand the connections between Rotary’s six areas of focus and our commitment to building peace. The conferences will be hosted between February and June in different cities across North America, Europe, Australia, and the Middle East. Looking ahead, it’s not too early to start planning your trip to the Rotary International Convention in Toronto, Canada on 23-27 June 2017. Register online by 31 March to receive the discounted pre-registration rate, and find Inspiration Around Every Corner in Toronto! We all know that Rotary would not be the organisation it is without the dedication of our club presidents, district governors, coordinators, directors, trustees, and other leaders all over the world. Because of your hard work, Rotary is truly Making a Difference in the world, so thank you". Sincerely, Ian Riseley Rotary International President, 2017-18 Have a great week ahead. Kind Regards President Jenny Other matters Alistair Fraser informed the members and guests present that the Moonee Valley Festival was a great success and said that if that is an indication then the Art Show should have equal success. He thanked all those who helped at the festival. President Jenny welcomed the past member PP Glenn Smith who is moving to sunny Queensland. John Odgers spoke to the members about the open day at DIK. Maria Kouppas reminded all to distribute the Art Show flyers so that there is a wide distribution and people get to know about the event, she said that this could be the biggest project for the club going forward. Steve Chandler again reminded all to put their names down to help at the Art Show, he also stated that people may be interested in seeing the heritage listed home as well. Lino won the raffle and drew the joker!!!! Grant Sheldon – news and message from Grant Stephenson I called Margie and the situation with Grant is as you say “not good”. Grant got kicked in the leg and was sent flying into the air only to land on his shoulder which was equally badly damaged. Grant is having MRI’s , etc., etc. but he has a long way to go and will need months of recovery and rehab to get on top of his injuries . . . horses do have a kick! In any case Margie requested we not visit him for a while and equally not contact him for a while - to give him time to focus on recovering. As we all know Grant will get quickly frustrated doing nothing, so Margie requested we call her to arrange contact, visitations, etc. – naturally Margie is looking after Grant “first and foremost”. I suggest we pick 1 person / point of contact from RCE to co-ord. with Margie and not have everyone overwhelming the Sheldon’s - at present. I agreed to keep in contact with Margie (when I get back from the USA (mid-Mar.)) but stay in the background. Cheers.

PS:- Given the workload on Margie, they’ve had to put all their horses elsewhere until Grant can get on his feet . . . sometime in the future.

The Moonee Valley Festival stall The Moonee Valley Festival Stall to promote our Art Show, the "Moonee Valley Art Show" at North Park Mansion on 23-25 March 2018 was a great success. We had a large attendance at our Stall due to the interest created by the Colouring and Drawing competitions we had organised, children from 3 years of age up to 10 participated as their very proud parents looked on. Our very own Jenni Mann and Lino Airo-Farulla were the competitions judges and at the end of the day they had selected 8 individual winners. The winning entries will be displayed at the Art Show on Saturday and Sunday. Many thanks to members who gave to their Sunday to assist at the Stall: Bev Smyth, Roger Leask, Steve Roe, Kelly Abfalter, Maurice Mollica, Maria Kouppas, Jenni Mann, Lino Airo-Farulla, Peter Baker, who distributed hundreds and hundreds of Art Show "flyers" during the day. Thanks also to Michael Mahoney for donating 100 copies of "Tashamodo and the Magic Plum Tree" plus pencils and texta pens. Thanks to Richard Lawrence for signing books for the winners. A good day for Rotary and we hope a good day for attendance at the Art Show in March.

Del King

Del King is District Community Service Chair, a former GSE Team member with PDG Murray and a Past President of the Rotary Club of Flemington. She has also served on the District Youth Exchange Team, has hosted numerous students and has spoken on many panels on her GSE experiences. For those who may not have heard but know Del well, she is currently in a critical condition in Royal Melbourne Hospital with a

deterioration of the illness which has plagued her for the last 5 years. She was admitted to ICU last Saturday and her condition has deteriorated with multiple organ failure. She is currently on Life Support, Dialysis and being treated by a number of specialists. Her son AJ has returned home from his Youth Exchange in Germany to be with his family. As you will understand this is a very difficult time for her husband Sean who is being inundated with phone calls and texts. He asks that you monitor Del's Facebook page for updates on her condition and contact DG Peter Frueh, Former Youth Exchange Committee member Chris Drenen or Secretary of the Rotary Club of Flemington Lesley McCarthy for information.

Thank you for sharing this news with your members - Del has impacted on so many lives in her work as a Police Officer, hiking Kokoda twice with students from the Flemington area, GSE to

India, her work on Youth Exchange and standing up for disadvantage everywhere. Our thoughts and prayers are with her and her family at this time.

Speaker for the day Carolyn Larson who spoke about the ancient Greeks, she said in popular imagination western civilisation was built on Rome but

she said that after this presentation she may be able to convince all that it was in fact the Greeks who influenced us more

deeply and more fundamentally than any other ancient culture.

One of the astonishing things about ancient Greeks is that they were

pioneers in almost every field of intellectual endeavour.

Of course they were not immune to other influences and they took

ideas from contemporary cultures, but they invariably raised these to

new levels.

She said that we may know that the Greeks invested Democracy,

Philosophy as well as created theatre and laid the basis for most forms

of literature.

She said ironically, one thing they did not invent – despite the famous

theorem being named Pythagoras was mathematics, although they

raised that to a true scientific endeavour.

Indeed only the Bible has been reprinted more times than Euclid’s

Elements of Geometry.

But other areas that we have to thank the Greeks for are, Art, Education,

Law, Logic, Sport, Warfare, Scientific disciplines such as Biology,

Geology, Chemistry and Physics and the scientific methods itself, not to

mention the alphabet and our language.

The Greeks had also invested the gear, the screw, the water pump, the

water clock, the water organ (a musical instrument) the torsion catapult,

the wheel barrow, the anchor, the alarm clock as well as the gimbal, the

odometer, fire hoses, the crane, compressed air cannon, the battering ram and flame throwers.

Other inventions were the dry dock, vending machines (yes!!) automatic doors, robots and the steam engine. One of the most

remarkable inventions was a computer!!! It was called the “Antikythera Mechanism” it was found by chance by divers in the

1900 off the coast of Antikythera- hence its name.

It has been dated to 150-100 BC and was finally decoded by Professor Derek de Solla Price at Yale University in the 1950s. He

called it a “calendar computer” and said it was like finding a jet engine in Tutankhamun’s tomb. It was in fact the world’s oldest

known complex scientific calculator or in other word an analogue computer.

Its true purpose she said remained mysterious until 1975 when x-ray analysis showed it to be a device that tracked the paths of

the sun and the five then known planets. It predicted solar and lunar eclipses, showed the moon’s path through the signs of

the zodiac and even accounted for leap years with a brilliance and insight that would not be matched for centuries, it was

accurate to within one degree in 500 years!!
