CONTENTS About the CoverAs the cliché goes, the only permanent thing in this world is change.

Thus, this school year 2011-2012 welcomes Centralians with quite a few transformations in various aspects within the university. The Pharos, like our university is undergoing modifications to further serve the students. This is The Pharos’ maiden issue in magazine format – a deviation from the usual broadsheet type the publication has been releasing for the past years. Under the new editorial board, The Pharos, with these changes will continue to uphold truth and freedom of speech.

This is to some extent, the emotion of probably a few of the staff of The Pharos whenever Centralians take for granted the school publication, especially each time students fail to utilize this paper for its utmost function which is to inform, to educate, in a few moments to entertain. Moreover it highly intends to change ideas, perceptions and to move minds, challenge souls. But instead we find the papers being stuck in faculty rooms, or used to protect oneself against the sun and rain, or to wipe off dirt on chairs and tables.

And we feel that, not out of blaming or charging the students, unworthy. But rather, we feel sorry for you have wasted an amount of your tuition fees, by not grabbing a copy of the school organ you deserve. Yes, it may be a big revelation to you, but you have paid for this. This is constantly happening because of you. So the next time you misuse the news magazine, simply think of your paper bills and thrashing them out. Besides, the contents of this news magazine, is crafted, designed and customized to suit your needs and wants. The issues tickling your minds, the events you would want to know more about, the games that you suggested would be included are all put here, because it’s all about you, this is who you are, this is who Centralians are, THIS IS WHO WE ARE.

And if you have observed, this has new look, new size, new style, and new quality of paper being used. Indeed, fresh, fun and exciting. We, The Pharos staff have also managed to transform, revolutionize and modernize our ways

to not let you, dear students, have any other excuse to not take home a copy of this. Come’ on it’s free! And right now, it’s handier, trendier, more concise and more student-driven.

We also encourage you also to e-mail us (you may refer to the e-mail addresses on page 2) regarding your concerns, questions, suggestions, contributions and we might just feature your mail in the publication. So if you have any news

articles, cartoons and comics, poems, be free to send it to us and have your name included in the next issues.

With that, we hope you will treat the publication as your own, be proud of it and treat is as chronicles of your college life.

Before we end, we would like to clarify these to students, not because we have to explain but rather, we would like each of you to understand.

Let us reply with these questions. Firstly, the staff of the publication is mostly health sciences students, rarely computer-related students, nor journalism students. Unlike other universities, they have literature and journalism programs, so expect that students are experts in writing and designing. Be more inspired that we have science-inclined yet highly-potent writers and artists who manage to juggle their tasks. Secondly, MCU unlike other schools, is not the type of very socio-active that every day concerts, programs and etcetera is happening around. So we have to be guided with the calendar of activities with our time of publication, or else, its all feature and no news, which is not aligned with the visions of the org. Thirdly, vastly improving the quality is proportionate to price. So if we aim for fully colored ones, yes it is possible, but with the amount one pays for it, maybe only a few copies will be made. And last, the publication, as of the moment, does not have its office. So imagine how we pull-up all these things together, by almost always being apart.

But till the end, we would never stop creating and exploring ways to be able to deliver the quality of news magazine that we all ought to have. Not only out of our responsibility, but also because this is what we love to do, and by doing it, we are also able to serve you.

YOU WILL NOT READ THIS.It’s actually surprising that you have bothered to have yourself a copy of this news magazine.

It’s not usual you’re continuing to read this article. It’s pretty odd that something related to this publication has taken your attention.

The Admissions Office held the first test run for the new enrolment system last April 15 with the purpose of making the enrolment system simpler and more organized. The new enrolment system was first proposed by the Admissions Office, along with the University Registrar, ICT Department and Audit. It was presented during the academic council meeting, with the presence of the department heads and academic deans, and was approved by the university president, Dr. Aristotle T. Malabanan.

This event paved way for the Admissions Office and the Guidance and Placement Office to be separated as interdependent units.

Among the changes in the enrolment system was the dissemination of an enrolment routing slip, which functions as a guideline for the freshmen and transferees. This document is being signed by the department heads and personnel-in-charge upon a student’s accomplishment of the necessary paraphernalia asked by that office. It will also indicate where the applicant will proceed next in completion of his or her requirements, until he or she is admitted in the university.

Looking back to the troubles encountered last semester during enrolment, this time the participating offices were united to create a one-stop-shop venue for enrolees. The Admissions Office, Cashier, Registrar, Guidance and Health Clinic shared the air-conditioned function rooms of the Centennial Gymnasium where all the enrolment process transpired. This has brought more organization and ease to the parents and students enrolling for SY 2011-2012. As compared to before, one has to walk all the way from the Administration Building towards PGT Building for payments, etc. Now, it all happens in one place.

In addition, all enrolees also underwent Physical and Oral Examinations conducted by the Health Services Clinic. This is to ensure the wellness of the students. This will also disprove the belief that there was no health exams rendered despite its inclusion in the miscellaneous fees.

It was indeed another step forward for the continuous progress of our university. By this we can see how the Administration strives to provide its students the best it can offer.

NEW EXPERIENCE IN USC ELECTIONS

A debut in the MCU culture, a campus-wide election for the new set of University Student Council Officers was held last March 2011 under the supervision of the Office of the Student Affairs. The two competing party lists, MINERVA and PAC Party were both given a week to prepare for the planning and campaign

period. Local Student Council Parties were also given the same amount of time to prepare and make rounds to campaign for their respective colleges. Automated election, now on its 2nd year, was again made possible for an easier and convenient election process.

The structure and the designations of this year’s USC officers were very much different to the previous ones. The development of these is credited to the previous USC batch led by Andrey Garcia of Arts and Sciences. This is to clearly identify the responsibilities and tasks of every officer thus, making him or her more efficient in their work.

Before, the USC members were also composed of the local student council officers of the respective colleges. Therefore differences between schedules and juggling of tasks were unavoidable. To minimize these conflicts, a separate set of officers were selected for the USC and local SC. A student may be a candidate of only one election.

These changes were carried out

successfully as eight from MINERVA Party and two from PAC Party obtained the highest votes for the following positions. They were:

Sharon Danisha Vaswani as PresidentCharmaige Mendoza as Vice President for

As the previous school year has ended, the university bid goodbye to its graduates, which included the majority of the previous The Pharos staff.

As part of its continuity and sustainability, the incoming editors and staff conducted a screening and interview of the next batch of campus journalists last April 25 to 28 at the Office of Student Affairs, Ground Floor of the LRC Building.

The selection process was conducted by Lois Marie Baltazar (Medical Technology), Editor-in-Chief; Aisha Junaide (Dentistry), Associate Editor; and Annabelle Estrella (Arts and Sciences), Production

NEW GENERATION:THE PHAROS 2011-2012 Manager, with the guidance of Mr. Ira Maniquis, The

Pharos Adviser and Prof. Lourdes F. Cruzat, Dean of OSA.

Each college was asked to send their representatives to participate in the event. Applicants from the different colleges underwent rigorous screening by means of writing news and feature articles relating to global and local issues. After which are interviews on the applicants’ personal background and perspective on important matters. The aspirants were also required to join the Leadership Training Seminar of the University Student Council.

It was clearly noted that the basis for judging

would not solely rely on writing skill. The evaluations will be based on four key areas: commitment and attitude, production capability, ability to work with a team and awareness on current events, with the first factor being the most important.

This year’s staff was composed mainly sophomores and juniors with the senior students as key editors. Even so, the editors were still scouting for other hopefuls who wish to serve the university as journalists. Applications are still open especially for the position of cartoonist and staff writers. Interested students may refer to the Staff Box for more information on how to become a member of The Pharos.

SHAPING UP STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERSBy Meghan Lee Nina Jamille G. Fernandez, Optometry

A two-day Leadership Training Seminar spearheaded by the University Student Council officers under the guidance of Office of the Student Affairs was conducted last April 26 and 27. This was held at the Centennial Gymnasium - Function Room and was attended by the newly elected local council officers of the different colleges.

The following keynote speakers shared their expertise to serve as a guide to the student leaders: Mr. Ira Maniquis, Director of Communication Services, Prof. Lourdes F. Cruzat, Dean of the Office of the Student Affairs, Ms. Mila D. Perez, Finance Director, and Mr. Mark Rubio, Student Programs Coordinator.

Robert Francis Dikio, a participant of the Ateneo-Pair Program and Lois Marie Baltazar, a delegate of the 13th Ayala Young Leaders Congress, form the College of Medical Technology, also related their personal experiences and echoed the learnings that they acquired from their off-campus leadership conventions and trainings.

The workshop provides leadership training to students by developing their skills and strengthening their willingness and dedication to serve others to the best of their abilities. It also served as avenue in developing awareness among students to feel and see where they are in making contributions to improve and uplift the leadership qualities that they already possess. Moreover, the training stressed the importance of the student-leaders’ commitment in the development of their talents as role models for others in serving the interest of the university.

T h e speakers gave pieces of advice and practical tips on proper handling of events, pointers t o w a r d s

becoming a well-rounded student-leader and techniques on managing time wisely. After the discussions, team building activities like “Tower Building” was performed allowing the student leaders to apply the lessons they gained.

Kudos to all the student leaders as they face another chapter in their lives! As they battle against challenges in their leadership engagements may they be productive pioneers of the MCU Community.

DEBATE SOCIETY PARTICIPATES

IN INTERVARSITIESLast March 12 to 13, the MCU

Debate Society’s Rembert Hans Fernandez and Emmanuel Buragay both from the College of Arts and Sciences, with Emarie Tolarba and Kay Coros from the College of Medical Technology, gave pride to the school as they competed in their very first intercollegiate debate tournament, the CSB-IVs held at De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde in Taft Avenue, Manila.

CSB-IVs is an intervarsity that has been hosted by the De La Salle – College of Saint Benilde Debate Society every March for the past 8 years. The event is open to all debaters from different institutions around Metro Manila. The CSB Intervarsities also provides its participants a training ground in preparation for the upcoming national tournament, the Philippine Intercollegiate Debate Championship (PIDC).

On the first day of the event, the team clashed with the motions regarding national issues, public policies, environmental economics and international relations. Debating as the government side on the motion, this house believes that the US should have a military intervention in Libya; the team triumphed over Lyceum Team C in round 4, with adjudicator Kcolrehs Cordova from San Beda College.

The team however did not break into Octo-finals. Nevertheless, the event gave an opportunity to lift the name of the school and serve as a stepping stone for future debate tournaments, and proves that MCU can keep pace with the best of the rest.

Nine diligent students from Batch 2011 of Manila Central University stood out among the rest during their Commencement Exercises as they graduated cum laude of their respective colleges. In addition, a student was also given a special merit award.

They led this year’s MCU graduates last April 16 at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) where the graduation rites were held.

Batch 2011 cum laude were: Rizzi Anne B. Minoza of Arts and Sciences, the former Assistant News Editor of The Pharos, Imelda C. Banaag, Calixto R. Abat Jr., Darisse Mae M. Dela Cruz of

Business Administration, Mary Lydia C. Dela Cruz of Medical Technology, Jens Dale T. Lim of Nursing, Michelle G. Dagta of Optometry, and Ruby E. Regulacion of Physical Therapy. Giezelle Anne T. Almarez, Pharmacy received a special merit award.

These students serve as inspiration to the undergraduates, that they too, with perseverance and diligence, can also attain academic recognition. The university congratulates the graduates and look forward to their achievements as they unveil another part of their life, with the values and lessons from their Alma Mater always instilled in their hearts.

May pagkakataon tayong mabago ‘to.

So, ano.. Mag-aaral ka pa ba? Mag-aaral ka na ba?

AFTER THOUGHTS

AISHA b. JUNAIDEDentistry

GOD never leaves us, He gives us challenges He knows that we are capable of surviving. The saying that “everything happens with purpose” is true and God knows what is best for us.

We are the writer of our own novel. We create our own story and destiny. God is our guide and the people in our environment only influences.

Another year to begin with a new life, another lesson that we can obtain from experiences and challenges to overcome that waits for us for this year. Its quiet fascinating how we live in a fast-paced life a world where time flies so fast. Life is like a mystery we’ll never the answers know until we seek for it. We may never predict the future that waits for us and all we have to do is to wait and to go with the flow of river wherein we don’t know where it might lead us. The future depends on how you will respond and cope up to any situations that will surprise us.

Change is inevitable, as they say. Change can never be stopped it happens whether we accept or deny it. Without change, we will never go beyond what we may have acquired. Change is good it’s for the betterment of an individual. Imagine a person who does not accept change. That person will be left behind and will never grow to experience the reality of life. He will never discover himself and he lives without true happiness and contentment.

Our world faces a shocking adversity that might change

THE NEW everything. The Middle East, we are all familiar with this current issue. This region has vast energy resources that form the backbone of the world’s economies, influence and involvement in the Middle East has been of paramount importance for the former and current imperial and super powers, including France, Britain, USA and the former Soviet Union. Also known as the most militarized region in the world. A suppressed people that sees US influence as a major root cause of the current problems in the Middle East has led to a rise in Islamic militancy, acts of terrorism and anti-west sentiment, anti-US in particular

Earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis in Japan. These problems affect the other nations. The never-ending issues that are hard to solve in every corner of the world are poverty, corruption, over-population, global warming and pollution, diseases and illness that kill millions of people. These problems affect the lives of people – and we are one of them.

Everyone should stand strong and resilient to every problem that we encounter. We should be open to changes to be able to grow.

The X-Men, a fiction-based comic animation by Marvel Studios is about men and women with “special and exceptional gifts”. These people are called mutants. These mutants can do unimaginable things. Levitation, healing, pyrokinesis, telepathy, mind control and other powers are a few to mention. Of all the amazing mutants we know, there is one mutant that is remarkably known for her ability to shape-shift. That mutant is Mystique, a deceitful femme fatale that tricks and lures people into her traps through the use of her talent in shape-shifting.

In relation to X-Men’s Mystique, I dare say that in some instances in our lives, we are also like her. As a college student, we can “shape-shift” our way through difficulties. We are urged by these difficult times to “shift” because we are not be versatile enough. We cannot be the chameleon that the course requires. We are caught by the web of difficulties that we couldn’t untangle because of our limitations. The possible way to do it is by COURSE-SHIFTING.

COURSE-SHIFTING is an option for a college student. This option enables one to transfer to another program. Course-shifting is done because of certain factors:

COURSE-SHIFTING - A MATTER OF CHOICEBy James Ryan Mendoza, Medical Technology

1. The “ShifTer” believeS he’d choSen The wrong course.

We were uncertain if the course we first chose is what we really like. Sometimes we make decisions to please others, but we end up disliking it. It is important to know the things that we really love. If we aren’t sure of our choices, it will lead us to two results. We either end up liking it or we end up hating it. But if our reasons for studying are deep enough, we don’t care; we just want to finish it.

2. The courSe demandS knowledge in a SubjecT ThaT iS not the shifter’s forte.

It is a nightmare for college students to encounter their “nemesis” face to face, his or her subject of weakness, his or her waterloo. If Algebra is not his best friend, he must find a way to deal with it. If he gets a failing grade, he may lose hope. It’ll affect his performance as a whole. Another way around, we can think of it as a challenge, an opportunity to grow and go beyond our comfort zone.

3. the shifter doesn’t have the idea about his future. The Shifter’s course preference could have been influenced by

peers, family and media. He may have been persuaded by friends to choose such program for them to have a closer bond, even the choice of the university may be an issue. The moment may come that he will regret it because he chose foolishly. What a waste of money and time! These things influenced the student’s program preferences. If he chooses half-heartedly, he will not have the passion in that profession. Eventually, he will grow tired of it. But if the student learns to focus on the gains he will acquire being enrolled in such program, he might as well reconsider finishing for a degree then make the most out of the situation.

4. financial problems Because of the fluctuating prices, tuition fees for college are getting

more expensive. Course-shifting isn’t always caused by the student’s inability to cope with the intellectual demands of the course or his lack of drive but simply because they could no longer afford to pay the tuition. They would shift to a course with less expensive tuition fees. If faced with this situation, with all desire to finish schooling, one can ‘shape-shift’ to being a working student to be able to compensate his studies.

Carmina Bondoc, MCU Nursing student, had testified that she’s been having difficulties in Nursing Care Management. To cope with this problem, she gave her fullest effort and time to review and figure out its complications. She also said that we must try to enjoy the activities we do and should keep on doing the right things for us to avoid course-shifting.

This is a clear solution to the difficulties we encounter. We must keep on doing the right thing to conquer our weaknesses and we must give our effort and time to review and solve baffling questions in mind. These easy tips can help you survive the problems that convince us to shift courses.

To avoid the Shifting tendencies, here are some tips that might help.• Haveaclearvisionofyourfuture.• Ifyouknowyourgoalsincollege, youwillnotshifttoanothercourse

because you know who you want to be.• Donotbelieverumorsaboutthecourseyou’recurrentlyenrolledin.• Unverifiedreportsaboutthecollegedean, professors, studentsand

its staff should be taken with discernment.

Course-shifting is a matter we should think of very carefully. It is our discretion to utilize this option. We are convinced by many factors because we believe that shifting could solve the problems we encounter. But always instill in our minds, we must take our decision with full responsibility. We cannot end up like Mystique being a loser, being crippled by the weight of problems because of indecisions.

5. failing marks that make shifters discouraged. Getting an outstanding rating in tests is fulfilling. It makes us

confident in taking other subjects and learning a lot. It makes us fueled with determination and drive. But to get failing a grade, it blows the student’s self-confidence and that blow can be painful. It is very discouraging. It is depressing to see those failing grades written in our report cards. In reality, we are convinced by our egos to shift to another course, to never have those grades again. But it isn’t always the immediate solution. To err is human. It takes up courage to repeat a subject and prove that you can eventually finish it successfully.

To shift or not to shift, in every decision we make, there are advantages and disadvantages.

Oftentimes we interview students regarding their views, opinion, likes and dislikes about our university. But this time, we turn our attention to the persons who were primarily the reason why they were enrolled in the university, none other that the parents. It could be that the students selected their programs and schools but their parents still guided them and more importantly, funded them to be able to study,

Last April 28 and 29, an interview was conducted with the parents and guardians of the freshmen students including the transferees regarding their opinion about Manila Central University. They almost had a uniform opinion about the university. When asked about their basis of selecting MCU, here are their answers.

“Gusto ko yung mga rules and regulations ng MCU at hindi lang yun, gusto ko rin yung values ng school. Hindi siya makamasa. Kumbaga, balanse lang. Pinili ko na dito na lang

mag-aral yung anak ko kasi nandito na rin ang sister niya. And at the same time, pwede na rin siyang i-guide ng ate niya kapag dito siya nag-aral.” - Gemma G. Cadang (Guardian of Loisa Angela, Pharmacy)

- Ailen Janella V. Cabreros (Guardian of Maristela, Arts and Sciences)

Parents Speak About MCU FOREIGN STUDENTS CORNER

The Pharos serves as the voice of every Centralian and has the role of bridging the gap between the administration and the students. As a part of the fulfillment of this mission, the editors and staff decided to give our foreign students a section in our newsmagazine where they can be heard.

When interviewed about their expectations, comments and suggestions for the improvements in MCU, some of the answers were:

“We need to have air-conditioned rooms in the pre-dent area. We have a very good-looking library but we encounter problems upon entering the building. The guard looks for the library card and sometimes when we borrow books, we don’t have it with us. They do not let us enter. Seminars and conferences must be done to enhance our professionalism” – Saed Hemati, Arts and Sciences

“I expect from the College of Dentistry to consider to change or repair the defective units in the clinic. So we can always find free units to work with and we will be able to finish our requirements easier and faster.” – Rabiei Ahmadreza, Dentistry

“MCU is a right place to develop my talents and make my future bright. I have learned a lot since I came here to MCU. I think that it would be a good idea if school officials can have meetings with foreigner students once in a while so that we can voice out our problems” – Mehdi Sabeti, Dentistry

“I hope that the guards will be more polite and would not call us just by yelling “Hey”. The MCU site must also be updated” – Seyed Rahim, Dentistry

Have you ever seen yourself – fail an exam and said Facebook caused it? Late in your class, alibis state Facebook caused it, or received 3.0 in your report card and grunting its Facebook’s fault? Well, is it? Actually, most of these failures are due to us and has nothing to do with Facebook. IKR (I know right) you may say but the thing is everyone, aware of the harm and dangers of networking sites continue to use and abuse its wonders.

Do not misunderstand though. It is not like we treat Facebook as a foe but rather we be cautious about some facts that we might have overlooked.

TruTh #1Facebook get us hooked for minutes,

hours, midnights and mornings, even if we are not really doing something essential. Some of the reasons this happens are the presence of subliminal messages like “Helps you connect with the people in life. Stay connected,” which

invites and drags one to continuously go online and check whatever events, rumors or issues we do not really have to care about. Second, as the land of the greens, Facebook connects us with people we hold dear like friends and family. Here we post and they post everything good that happens to them. Here we share our world. It is actually one of the better objectives of these networking sites. On the contrary, if we are not in good terms with other people, we also use it as a tool to destroy his or her personality. Third, Facebook has incorporated time-compelling games and applications in its program that enables us to be farmers, mafia members, store owners, models and several others where we compete against our friends. Satisfaction guaranteed, but is it worth the time? We don’t think so. The highest level is the biggest loser. He or she has spared his entire day dedicating ideas and persevering over a computer instead of real-life achievements.

TruTh #2The greatest lie ever told: I have read

the terms and agreements. We users do not actually read the terms and agreements. We

It’s Facebook’s Fault!by rembert hans fernandez, arts and sciences and lois marie a. baltazar, medical technology

(“Helps you connect with the people in life Stay connected”)

just click the check box then submit! Its not as if someone had really spared time to read the entire conditions just to be able to post a silly picture or video, we were not trained to do that or at least, we’re too “time-conscious” for that.

So we don’t know the real terms. Such as everything we post in Facebook is owned by Facebook. From all sensitive information, cell phone numbers, pictures, stuff we made private –is actually public. As a matter of fact, when you delete a picture that file isn’t completely deleted, it is unseen in your page but it is still stored in the site’s domain. You can’t delete an account easily; you have to give a special request in order to fully delete your account. And, only in 2008 when many filed complaints in the court about account deletion did they fully delete the account up to the storage. So, you’ll complain about your privacy but you actually agreed to the terms remember?

TruTh #3Facebook has the ability us to make

us sad, inferior and insecure. Facebook is one of the greens where we post the best pictures we have (even using photo editors for enhancements), We post the best status we can give (even researching quotations just to be able to garner likes), we create better profiles. Eventually, there are instances we post our hardships and despairs which shouldn’t be the case because we indirectly affect people. But most of the time we show the world the best of who we are – to be wanted, to be appreciated, to be ‘liked’.

It is human to compare ourselves to others, and when we view the conditions of our fellows, if they are ultimately joyful and when we’re not, we tend to feel even more alone.

TruTh #4Having read these, we have a choice, we

have a chance, and we can make a difference in our lives. By the next time you input your e-mail address and password look back to the truths stated above and be responsible enough to put things in action. So what do you think of this? “Like?”

Fresh, fun and challenging - that’s how we foresee the school year. It will be a very memorable year for many students, both old and new as they will be facing the light and walk through the stepping-stone towards their goals of professionalism.

Having been a student of MCU for several years, we sure have witnessed the progress and development of our university in different areas may it be in the aspect of physical plant and facilities, academic and extra-curricular activities or school policies.

Even so, we cannot deny the fact that there are still some situations and circumstances happening inside the campus, which we do not yet fully grasp or understand.

This column is dedicated to curious cats. We encourage the participation of you students who want to learn more about the events around the university, grounds behind policies, or anything else worthy which will be a vague contribution to the knowledge of everybody. The Curious Centralian is open to questions and inquiries of everyone.

Q: “Why are the fdt building rooms not air-conditioned?” christel sta. romana, nursing

A: This had also been a major question of the inhabitants of FDT, primarily Nursing, Midwifery and Arts and Sciences (Psychology, Biology and Pre-Dentistry) students. According to Engr. Melquides V. Pablo, Jr., Head of Department of Engineering Maintenance and General Services, students who are occupying

THE CURIOUS CENTRALIANBy Edelyn Almiranes, Nursing

an air-conditioned building such as PGT building are actually paying an energy fee needed to run the air-conditioner, as this fee is collected from their miscellaneous expenses. But unfortunately, Nursing students and the like, were not being collected these fees from their tuition. Mr. Pablo said that if FDT students would like to request for air-conditioned rooms, then they must have discussions with their Deans and complete the requisition requirements.

Q: “Why there are no dormitories for foreign students like us? shrestha kuran Jyo, arts and sciences

A: There are talks about the demolition of the Old Gymnasium to be replaced by another building that will house a mall and other facilities like dormitories. True or not, it would really be a big accomplishment to be able to provide foreign students, who are increasing in number, with shelter. However, the school may be also looking through the disadvantages of this project. Think of the security measures and the policies to ensure the safety of the neighborhood. So, with much further studies and researches, we would like to think of it coming soon. As for the moment, the non-Filipino students would still have to reside nearby, though, be vigilant about the possible harm in their surroundings.

Q: “Why are some of the students not able to be involved in the activities such as mcu olympics and instead have classes?” alyanna grace agustin, nursing

A: One point to think about is that these activities may not be required in a particular

subject unless the instructor asks his or her students participationt. In the cases of the senior students having internships, the school realizes that academics is still the priority. Therefore, it cannot be asked that the student skip his or her duties to be able to play ball games. Maybe only when, he or she is free. Another perspective is that the professor might be actually going beyond the Free-day Friday policies. If observed, majority of the schedules last semester were designed to have the vacant time on Fridays from 2:00 to around 5:00-7:00PM. This was to let the students have a break from their usual academic routine. Some professors may have failed to realize this so they conduct make-up classes at times. On the other hand, some students immediately go home without participating in Free-day Friday events. In this context, we can see that communication and understanding should be strengthened amongt the students and their colleges.

By Glaiza Tarin, Nursing

“They should have a graphic designer as an adviser so that they can get the attention of their readers, a regular comic strip with a character that every student can relate with; a booth or fair during the start of school year to have interaction to the new students and recruit new members. The Pharos should post one month ahead of school activities to enable students to be prepared.” - Larry Vincent Velasquez, Med Tech

“The front page must be abstract or animated just like time magazine. There must be some topics about students’ interest like simple and short description of some popular Asian shows, or lists of most requested songs. There must be some article about employees and opinion of the students especially about the school facilities. There must be some true stories about students or employees that may give advice and lessons to those who read them. And of course, there must be some entertainment part which consists of some silly surveys about the school. For example, 10 most popular violations, etc., logical questions, pick-up lines, etc.” - Yvette Andes, Nursing

“The design of the paper must be artistic, and colorful. The topics inside is composing some topics about school activities, true stories of the some students including inspiring and love stories. They should interview the students, faculty, and employees about their life. There must be some trivia, quotes, horoscope, and short comic page (esp. jokes) to make the students more interested about the newspaper.” - Gracelyn Remegio, Nursing

“For me, the design is already good but I think they should keep more news about what was happening in the school. There must be games that can be a relevant to students as their past time but it should not make too much compromise of the newspaper’s purpose. Surveys and polls about the events to give exposure to the students - maybe about school performance, leadership, and they should also put some articles about what’s happening outside the campus.” - Carlo Ventura, Nursing

“The Pharos should make the newspaper more creative, original, and inspiring so that

the students will notice it. They should put more news about the school. The staff of the organization should distribute the newspaper in every room or every college so that it will not be ignored. They must have some interaction with the students, as well as with the faculty and staff of the school.” - Ariel Pasco, Computer Studies

“They should put more news not only about the school but also about what’s happening in the world like lifestyle, entertainment, and music. They should also be the one who distribute the newspaper to the students in every room. The design must be more inventive, innovative, so the students will be interested and read it.” - Joana Corpuz, Computer Studies

“The design should be more artistic, and creative. They should put more news about the activities of every college so that the students will know what’s going on even if they don’t belong on that college. The Pharos should have more interaction between the students so that it’s not only the students who will approach them. “ - Arvin Paulo Mariano, Computer Studies

Late at night when you were all alone while watching the heavens above the earth, you have seen a shooting star dashing from the heavens. You close your eyes, treat yourself a deep breathe of fresh air, and you make your ultimate wish. Then you open your eyes, and you leave a sweet smile on your face. You have succeeded these steps every single night while the sky is clear, hoping that your dreams will come true, not now, but someday.

As Cinderella said “A dream is a wish your heart makes.” Wishing is normal – it is part of our everyday lives. You wish to make the skies clear not to ruin your outing with your family or friends, you wish to pass the exam, you wish not to have heavy traffic when you’re late for school – we wish almost everyday. Some cultures have customs in which people are encouraged to “make a wish”, such as blowing out the candles on a birthday cake, seeing a shooting star at night, tossing a coin into a wishing well or fountain, blowing a wild dandelion along the way or breaking the wishbone of a cooked turkey. Many believe such wishes can only come true if you keep them a secret from other people. Others, on the other hand, believe that wishes come true only if you tell them to someone else.

Elizabeth Harper, a former nurse and currently a spiritual healer once said, “Wishing is an art of surprise– no one can ever tell you how long your wish will take to manifest.” In her book: ‘Wishing: How to fulfill your heart’s desires,’ she explained that making a wish is not like waving a magic wand and in a blink of an eye, your wish will come true. It takes hours, weeks, months, or even years. But is there any method to make our wish manifest perfectly? Yes, and according to Harper, there are seven principles to realize our perfect wishes:

1. Wish intention• Askforwhatyouwant.Yourwishshouldinvokeexcitementand

enthusiasm. • Be realistic. Have a clear vision of what you want based in

reality. If you are a 200 pound, 4’9” brunette, do not wish to be a 120 pound, 5’8” blonde by next week. Your wish would more authentically be along the lines of loving yourself and feeling good about yourself.

I am walking along a road of testTrying to unmaze wrong paths, at my bestExpecting that no one will ever dare to lend

A calming touch of a helping hand

But as I look back wrapped with fearsRevealing my hopes, doubts and tears

I glanced with a shadow, in a solitary trailAnd saw a woman who is always there

whenever I fail

She is a strong willed personI can always lean on

Whose love is everlastingIncomparable with all that is everything

I will always define her as a perfect epitome Of a woman who’s always there to fight for me

and comeWhom I will always cherish and be forever

thankful Within my heart and together within my soul

So as I reach my hand to you And step out in the gloomy darkness that

made me blue I set aside the sorrowful heart that

dwells in me Packing away those shed of tears and face the

world without my fears

Every minute of everydayI promise to value and savor the love of you Because for me I only knew one thing to do

And that is to also fight for you!

Everyone has the right to wish what we want, but remember what our ancestors told us: “Be careful what you wish for, for time will not be the helping guide to turn back the minute itself.” But a wish can’t be manifest without our own enthusiasm and hard work towards what we dreamed for. As students, we must study hard, sacrifice what we must sacrifice, and don’t frown!

DAY DREAMINGBy Christopher Magboo Santos, Dentistry

I found myself, trapped in the ghastly abyssI have no idea, where could I be?Darkness prevailing dead silence everywhere!Water so warm is all around me!

I’m floating in the darkness, and I’m still confusedI tried to free myself, I couldn’t, I couldn’t!No matter how hard I try to lose the grasp!I’m still tangled with invisible hands

I’m so determined to set myself freeI kicked every wall, squeezed through any exitNo matter how hard I try to escapeIt seems like I’m forever damned in this place

I cried for help, no one answers backSuddenly I heard a voice in the dark“wag kang malikot!, masakit yan anak ko!Hearing this voice, I trembled in wonder.

The voice is so soft, so warm and tranquilIt made me wonder more, what really awaits me?Despite being trapped inside this warm prisonI soon to trust the phantom that talks to me in season

Blinded with darkness, deafened by a beatI threw away my worries and also my fearsThe beat I heard, soothes me when I’m wearyI’m surprised to hear also the beat is inside me!

I spend almost too long in this placeI wanted to get out seeing more of the voice so sweetI moved and squeezed myself in everywayTo free myself and get out of the darkness

As I progress to my self freedomI heard the voice crying painfully so damned“di pwede, di pwede, di pa to’ ang panahonPara lumaya ka sa sinapupunan ko!

Hearing the bitter cry of the gentle voiceI stopped moving to provide comfortI tucked myself, to prevent myself to get outAs the voice said “ di pa pwede! di pa pwede!

The Testimonies Aborted Spirit

By James Ryan A. Mendoza, Medical Technology

I spent more time imprisoned in the darknessI heard new voices, sweet voices, loud voices! The voices were happy because the voice talksIn gentle manners, in sweet words and testimonies

Despite the swift manner of the voiceSometimes I hear it weeping, bitter as a gourd:di ko alam ang gagawin!, ako’y puno ng takot!”Dyos ko, gabayan nyo po ako,! Anong gagawin ko”!

I heard a roar of a newly strange noiseI don’t know who owns that threatening voice“Bakit di mo sinabi! Lintik na Buhay na yan”!Ako’y may pananagutan sa dinadala mong iyan!”

I am so confused! What are they talking about!Still have no explanation for the unsatisfied doubts“Di ko tatanggapin yan!, ako’y aalis na!Patungong Italya para makapag aral!

I am distressed on what’s happening outside!I pity the voice that cries at every taunt“Malandi, maruming babae!, ako’y natukso lang!Pinagsisihan kong naging kasiping kita!

I anger the voice that caused the phantom to weepThe words so complex, it’s beyond my understandingBut I couldn’t do anything to provide comfortBut I knew when I move smooth, delight will come to follow

“patawad mahal ko! Di ko nais ito!Kailangan kang mawala sa sinapupunan ko!Ito lamang ang dahilan para mapanatag akoDi ka dadanas ng hirap sa hinaharap mo!

Those words I heard, gave me extreme melancholyI knew that someway, it no longer desires meWhat did I do? To cause it too much painAll I want is to be free from the darkness

I put myself to slumber thinking what could happenThe phantom couldn’t bear the pain that were deepenedDeep down it’s spirit, spirit that wants to surrenderEnding its misery can be the only answerI am awakened by a frightening shrillThe Phantom is crying in excruciating painWhat is happening!, I asked myselfPatawad, patawad! The only words I hear

Frightened and confused, something’s happening to meI am emerging in the prison I used to beBut to my horror, I felt great acheAll throughout my body, I cry in dismay

My Arms and Legs! Were separated from me!Cold hands grasped upon me!, pulling me from the abyssMy eyes first set their sight in GrossBlood is all around me! Bloody hell, bloody hell

I never thought the voice I grew to loveWill be responsible for my fatal departI don’t understand I didn’t do anythingMaybe my existence caused her Misery

But despite the Questions that haunts me until nowWhy did she kill me? Oh, why? Oh why?I hope she’s okay, and she’s done it for the goodEven my death, I’ll do this for better

The Sweet voice that comforts me when I’m troubledI’ll miss forever, and I shall long for moreI love you, oh voice, even if you disliked me!My love for you is eternal, Goodbye, goodbye!

Were you there when the music died?Did you know how to hold me when I cried?Did you fight to stand there by my side? When I was in despair…

Did you keep me safe within your arms?Did you protect me from being harmed?Or you did win me other than with your charm? You saw me hurting with one glance,

And I decided to fool myselfLike a fool I went alongI never thought I could be wrongSo I gladly played my part…

And now I lie here, wondering why,

Catastrophic Melody By Aisha B. Junaide, Dentistry

I never thought that you and ICould talk in love and never cry again….

For what we have done,I’m terrified of the way I feelNow that I know your love isn’t real.I’m not sure my heart will ever heal,Because all I can do is to run..

I run from the future, but mostly from the past,Through the fields, so very fastThrough the moonlight and the midnight has Cast onto my crying face..

I’ve pray that you would decide to stayThat if I could keep you for one more day

And that you wouldn’t turn away and leave me..

But I’ve fooled myself for too long,That our love was not a tragic songAnd I know someday that you will be goneAnd no time left to borrow…

I will smile when you say goodbyeAnd wait until you’re gone to cry,You’ll be strong, and so will I…

Although I feel such sorrowAnd so I’ll face this world alone,Cold as ice, and hard as stone Until a true love comes along,I’ve nothing left to fear…
