We Say …… Your new editors bought a house in Point Wells last year, although we don’t move in until early May. But in the meantime we have come to realise how many people we already know in the village and just what a special community it is.

The fete was a lovely occasion with crowds of visitors coming to enjoy the food stalls, produce and craft sellers, Devonshire teas and great music. They wandered up and down the foreshore between the stalls with children and dogs, all of them having a relaxed and enjoyable time. A Triumph Spitfire parked at the southern end brought back fond memories of younger days, while Graeme Crosby’s Kawasaki motor bikes were a reminder of his glory days in the 1980s.

The Point World Cricket Trophy tournament was an opportunity for one of us to dust off his extremely rusty batting and bowling skills in the friendliest of situations. The imaginative rules, devised by George Maginley and Ian Dobson, took into account the closeness of boundaries, the condition of the pitch and the ideal length of time for people of various ages. In the finest tradition of village cricket, there were several beers and an excellent afternoon tea.

Another experience we have enjoyed in the warm weather has been the delightful swimming in the river either side of high tide.

Thank you Point Wells – we already feel at home here!

You Say ……..yes we would like to hear your comments and opinions

THE POINT WELLS FETE: Continued from Page One: A big shout out of thanks to Gera Verheul & Bevan Woodward who organised the Youth of Point Wells - helping with Coconut Shy, washing dishes, waiting on tables at the Devonshire teas, gathering up golf balls, coffee runners, putting out chairs on the reserve & helping with a myriad of chores. THANK YOU ALL.

Of

course all of this type of event does not happen overnight, a huge thank you to my committee members, Lynell Martin, Jan Hutchinson, Noeline Cranston, Heather Georgieff & Brenda Robinson. for countless hours of preparation. To Rick for being there. They are all stars!!!**** Just in from “Mr Four Square” “The fete was fabulous! Absolutely fabulous! Loved the atmosphere and energy and please pass along to all of the volunteers my thanks & appreciation of their services and how impressed I was with the organisation of the Pt Wells Annual Fete. Congratulations all!” Also from the Keesings (Nougat stall-holder) ‘We wish to thank you & your team for a bloody fantastic day, you should all be proud.

The spirit of the day made it well worth being part of the atmosphere. Same place next year next to The Bandwagon would be great. Big thanks for the day”. The $6000 raised on the day will go towards the “Youth Committee of Pont Wells, along with donations to some of the clubs run by volunteers. A great effort by all.

An update from your Pt Wells Community & Ratepayers Committee…

I’d like to start by thanking Heather and her hard working team for organising such a fabulous Fete on Waitangi Weekend. There was an excellent mix of stalls, great music and a fun atmosphere for all. I’m already looking forward next year’s Fete! Here’s an update on the various projects we’ve been working on. Don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions… Mangroves: Lawrence has been liaising with Omaha on the topic of the mangrove proliferation in the harbour. Omaha has spent a great deal of time and money submitting to council proposals that meet with their approval for the legal control of the mangroves. The committee has now decided to have a working bee to remove excessive growth around selected areas. This will take place on March 29th at 9.30 am meeting at the boat ramp. A separate note about this is included in this issue of the Crier. At the working bee we can discuss next steps and this can also be discussed at the AGM on April 12. WaterCare Resource Consent consultation: Ines continues to lead our feedback on the consultation with Watercare re the Jones Rd wastewater treatment resource consent. Next meeting to be on Feb 28 @ 9am. Road safety: With the assistance of Tilly & Christine, we have been looking at safety and amenity improvements on Pt Wells Road. Please see the update and new survey inserted in this Crier (email me if you want a copy sent to you). Auckland Transport have responded to our request to prioritise a footpath from 30 Pt Wells Rd to the General Store, construction will start on that soon.

Walking & cycling to Matakana Country Farm Park. We’d

like a shared path along the side of the road Omaha Flats Road Youth Club. Ines & I have been tasked with investigating how this might be designed and funded. Please get in touch if you’d like to help. Auckland Unitary Plan. Graham and John coordinated submissions to the Council on behalf of Pt Wells, the hearing is pending and we will work with other groups such as Omaha Residents & Ratepayers to present our submissions. Youth Club. Many thanks to both youth members and coordinators Gera and Andrea, who put in a great effort assisting at the Fete. The proceeds of the fete will go towards recreational equipment, such as a netball hoop and a soccer/rugby goals at the hall reserve. I do get calls from people if there are problems with the path to Omaha, however it’s best to log them online with Auckland Transport here: https://at.govt.nz/about-us/contact-us/report-a-problem/ - they seem to respond quickly. Keep up to date on the happenings at Pt Wells here: www.ptwellsvillage.org Our AGM is on April 12, 4pm at the Hall. Please come along to catch up and have your say on what happens in your community. We welcome new committee members who like to work constructively on projects! Finally, many thanks to Vanessa who has taken up on the role as editor and chief ‘do-everything’ for the Crier, it’s a daunting task but much appreciated. Bevan Woodward Ph: 422 9507 or [email protected]

WWTP Consultative Group Site visit The site visit on 24th November was very useful and resulted in additional monitoring sites being identified. The Project Investigation Plan and most recent meeting notes are being added to the website please find the link here: http://www.watercare.co.nz/about-watercare/projects/Omaha%20Wastewater%20Treatment%20Plant/Pages/default.aspx Summary The consultative group field visit was overall highly useful for both interested parties. None of the areas of interest raised by members of the consultative group during the site visit contradicted the existing site conceptual model; which provides some added confidence in the existing conceptual model itself and its’ founding data. The issue of groundwater seepage along the Omaha Beach will be investigated further. Some additions were added to the Investigation Plan following the visit including checking certain bores still exist and confirming sites for monitoring surface drains. WWTP Consultative Group next meeting is on 28thFebruary at 9am. All welcome Ines Curin

Christmas was a delightful display of community spirit in our fabulous little village, we had so much

positive comment from visitors to the Point leading up to Christmas about the decorated letterboxes and

the kids absolutely loved it! I have to admit, as I get older I get more jaded about Christmas, so it was

really refreshing to see so much enthusiasm. Hopefully this year we'll get some spare time to decorate our own letterbox!

Angela and I will sponsor a couple of extra competition categories next Christmas, including one

for best night display. The prize giving at village hall and lolly scramble were organised at the last

minute, but what a turnout! Ang used some major pressure to get me in a Santa suit (maybe that's what

caused the trousers to split), but grumpy Santa soon turned into happy Santa when I saw how happy the

kids were to see Santa in his sleigh with a big bag of lollies! Ang's Mini proved to be the perfect sleigh and

a couple of pillows stuffed down my jacket produced the required pot belly (that's my version and I'm sticking to it). All great fun and looking forward to next Christmas.

Here are the 3 winners and the three runners up.

Winners: Most Outrageous: 7 Riverside Drive (Santa on ladder) Santa's Favourite: 278-282 Pt Wells

Road Most Point Wells: 237 Point Wells Road

Runners Up: 60 Pt Wells Rd- 3 Dunbar Rd - 40 Harbour View Rd

And many thanks to Santas’s helpers Eugene, Mark and Angela

WINTER HOURS FOR THE POINT WELLS

STORE We have been taking Mainly Music in the Point Wells Clubrooms for a year now. Even though it is a big job on Thursday mornings to set it up, it has worked well. We have a special core of wonderful people who have attended faithfully since the beginning, many new people are also attending. We love having you!

We have a lot of fun with stories, singing, dancing and using props ad musical instruments. Sometime we do craft activities which the children really enjoy. We also provide morning tea for the children and adults, though any donations are gratefully accepted.

Thank you to all those who attend and to the adults who help to make a success. Special thanks to Margaret McCullough who has helped faithfully nearly every week. We appreciate you!

We invite all of those who have pre-school children to come along and enjoy the fun – Always room for more!! Rosalie Nobilo Mainly Musi is held at the Pont Wells Club every Thursday between 10.00am and 12pm

The Library has been very busy over the holiday season with a marked increase in people borrowing books and magazines..It has been great to see so many people enjoying our Library. They will be on the shelves shortly. Borderline by Liza Marklund, Some Luck by Jane Smiley, Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, The Book of Lost and Found by Lucy Foley and The House on Carnival Street by Deborah Rodriguez which is a sequel to Little Coffee Shop of Kubal are a few of the titles chosen this time. Junior Time recommenced on Friday 13 February. The Library is open for an hour from 9.30am especially for our pre school children, so bring them in to enjoy their own special time exploring the extensive range of books suitable for their age group. If you missed our first one for the year, the dates for the others before the next school holidays are:- Friday 27 February and Friday 13 & 27 March.

LIBRARY NEWS

The evening was well attended by Point Wells residents keen to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season and over 70 revelers danced the night away to the music of Dargaville group Shimian who played a great selection of favourites from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

A tasty meal was supplied by Denby Catering from Wellsford which enabled the attendees to continue chatting and socialising,

POINT WELLS CLUB - CRIER REPORT

FEBRUARY 2015

With many of our members involved in looking after grandchildren and/or on holiday during the December/January period we have had a few relatively quiet social evenings but that changed dramatically on Saturday a couple of weeks ago when about 45 people enjoyed our facilities. It’s fantastic to welcome visitors to the Club and we encourage you to bring along friends and family and include them in the Club experience. Membership Our membership continues to grow and we have now reached a total of 120 - vastly different to the low 20's which the Club had a couple of years ago when it was only focused on Bowls. Our financial year ends 30 April so we have decided to reduce the membership fee to $20 for joint membership and $10 for single membership from 1 January to 30 April each year. Membership fees are set at our AGM which will be held in mid-June so no further payment will be required until then. Sponsors and Club upgrade We have been very fortunate to have the support of a number of local businesses together with other organisations who have jointly allowed us to progress the Club upgrade and further develop Club activities. Leading the charge as our major sponsor is Mike Pero Real Estate - Angela and Andrew have agreed to sponsor a new 55" Ultra high definition TV together with a sound system. Rugby matches and other events will undoubtedly be booked out with this set up which delivers superb picture and sound quality. Many of you will be aware of our 'Burglar Board' whereby you place a $2 coin in a slot, print your name alongside and when full the winning number is drawn. Rebecca Lane of Bramble Cafe in the Matakana Country Park has agreed to sponsor the prizes which have recently consisted of excellent meat packs valued at $20 each from Matakana Butchery. This is a very generous offer from Becky and Adam Lane of Brambles who recently purchased a property in the Village and are now the proud parents of a new born baby girl born in the middle of February and named Ivy The excellent Carpet and Vinyl in the Clubrooms was supplied by John Fox of Flooring Xtra who not only gave us a competitive price but also supplied the underlay free of charge. Grant applications were submitted to Pub Charities and ASB Community Trust and we were successful in obtaining very generous funding from both sources which has gone a long way to meeting upgrade costs. As noted in a recent newsletter we still have a shortfall in funding but without support from all these organisations nothing would have been possible. We fully acknowledge the many demands made on local businesses and ask that you give them your support whenever possible.

We have three more projects to complete after which we can declare the upgrade of the Clubrooms complete. They are new Tables which we hope will be delivered before month end, followed by new chairs and a memorabilia section which will replace the previous 'honours board'. Work is underway on methods to finance these items together with the existing shortfall by way of grants or donations. As a separate project we intend to renovate the bowling green during the autumn/winter period with a goal of improving the playing surface ready for Bowls in the next season. As you know we have partitioned off part of the green as a recreational and children's play area and we also need to develop that area. Possibilities include Petanque, BBQ table and chairs, children's play equipment etc. Event Co-ordinator Are you on top of your game, proactive, energetic, organised and with a good understanding of modern communication techniques ???? Well if you have these qualities plus a few more we need you to co-ordinate social events at the Club. Note this does NOT mean you run every event although you might very well take ownership for some at your discretion. We believe there are many club members who are quite capable of running events and what we need is someone who can liaise with the organiser and key personnel on the Executive Committee to ensure all issues are properly managed and accounted for. This position would be on the Executive Committee. To date we have run some very successful screenings for Rugby and the Melbourne Cup together with a number of Trivial Pursuit evenings plus our facilities have been rented out on a few occasions for birthdays etc. We believe there is huge scope to make better or more frequent use of the Clubrooms more so with the upgrade nearly complete to such a high standard together with the fact we have a fully stocked Bar. So we can easily do more of the same but equally there could well be someone in the Village who might like to organise games evenings sessions such as 500, Bridge, Mah Jong, Scrabble etc or perhaps get a group together for a guest speaker series. If you have the right qualities to act as Events Co ordinator please contact the undersigned. Executive Committee members for next year We have the capability to add a couple of people to the Committee to assist in running the Club. This would be effective from the date of the AGM which is planned for mid-

THE POINT WELLS CRIER - VOLUME SEVEN ISSUE ONE | 10

June. Each person would normally have ownership for a specific area of activity and we then let you get on and do the job with advice and guidance provided by others if necessary or desired. Formal meetings are held once per month and usually last for around 90 minutes. We have a great team of people on the Committee and if you are interested in joining us please contact me at your convenience.

In the meantime enjoy the beautiful summer weather and we look forward to seeing you at our social gatherings on a Wednesday or Saturday from 5.00 pm to approx. 7.00 pm. Gordon Simpson President Home: 09 4230033 Mobile: 021 1275122 Email: [email protected]

CLUB SPONSORS - please give them your support whenever possible

In Loving Memory of Dorothy Edna Bradman – Rosalie Nobilo

We lost our precious “Dot” on the 30th December 2014 at the age of 92. She developed severe arthritis making it difficult to stand. Dot had a number of falls which led to her being admitted to North Shore hospital where she subsequently developed pneumonia. Sadly she was too frail to fight.

She was a wonderful lady with a great sense of humour. She loved spending time with friends and family and also enjoyed a game of Scrabble, which she was very skilled at until her death. We loved her creativity with new words!

She spent her childhood in Parkari. She was a free spirit enjoying the countryside, loved horses and was an excellent rider. She loved sport and was also a skilled tennis player.

Dot went to secondary school in Auckland which she found difficult after life in the country. After school she became a WAAF and

enjoyed her time in the Air Force, where she met her husband. They had five children together.

Dot retired to the family holiday home in Point Wells, a place she loved, and lived there with her youngest son, Neill, who did a wonderful job caring for her; as did the wonderful ladies of Point Wells who cared for her morning and night so she was able to stay in her home until her death.

She was a truly amazing lady and will be missed terribly.

A&P Show faces challenge of remaining relevant – Allan Barber The 148th Warkworth A&P Show was held on the Saturday of Auckland Anniversary Weekend on a very warm day with no fear of rain which at least alleviated the committee’s first concern. Two years ago there were rather more serious concerns the Show wouldn’t reach its 150th anniversary, but a few things have happened since then which have pushed this undesirable outcome into the background. The first significant occurrence was the committee’s decision to tell the local community there was a real worry about the Show’s ability to survive. Local businesses and members of the public responded very positively, shocked by the possibility of losing such a longstanding focus of community pride. Donations and membership subscriptions have both increased significantly.

The A&P Society had lost its major sponsor as a result of the global financial crisis, but this turned out to be the wakeup call needed to examine the benefit to sponsors in return for what was essentially a donation. The new major sponsor, real estate agency Bayleys in the North, works closely with the Society to provide assistance with marketing and fund raising. Among other initiatives, Bayleys run an auction each year in aid of the Society, support A&P film nights at the Matakana Cinemas and they also ran a sausage sizzle at Saturday’s Show which raised several hundred dollars. We have renamed our event the Warkworth A&P Lifestyle Show, because there wasn’t much future in continuing to cater for a fast diminishing farming community on the doorstep of the largest urban population in the country. Lifestylers have become the most important target market.

The challenge faced by all A&P Shows is to remain relevant to their community in the 21st century in the face of changing demographics and forms of entertainment, an ageing farming community and increasing urbanisation. Despite an apparent disconnect between town and country, urban New Zealanders increasingly demonstrate a desire to come to the country, either to live or just to enjoy a day out of town. A&P Shows have a great opportunity to bridge the rural-urban divide, but they also have to adjust to the changing needs of their customer base and the age profile of their members to remain financially viable. Probably the biggest challenge of all is to find people who will run the A&P Shows of the future, because this has traditionally been the responsibility of a farming community which is fast approaching retirement. The next generation must step up to the plate

Point World Cricket Trophy

On Waitangi Day a small group of Point Wells neighbours competed for the Point World

Cricket Trophy on the lawn in front of the Keith property. The trophy is named after

what George Maginley and Emma Keith used to call Point Wells as children.

The trophy was first competed for last year when Max Rowsell won the one day version

and Ian Dobson won the 20/20, but this year George was determined to win and had

apparently been practising hard. He won both versions and the rest of the field was a

long way behind.

MANGROVE CONTROL – A COMMUNITY FUN EVENT FOR A GOOD CAUSE. Planned for Sunday 29th March 2015 Time 9.30 -12 noon. Meet at Boat Ramp

Mangroves are growing out of control destroying the pristine nature of the beaches and the flow of the river. We now wish to introduce some form of control following legal guidelines.

Rendezvous at the Boat Ramp Point Wells to receive some guidelines and decide on the areas and the techniques. Please bring old secateurs or croppers as the best way is to snip off the mangrove at ground level. We will then collect the debris and take to 737 Leigh Road in trailers or utes for burning.

We have informed the council of our intent and they are fine and have given us the following:

“The removal of mangrove seedlings less than 60cm/600mm high can be done without need to obtain consent if it complies with the following conditions,

The removal does not take place in Coastal Protection Area 1 (CPA 1)

The removal does not take place under mature mangroves

Notification to Council where more than 30 square metres is proposed to be removed

Seedlings are removed by hand, or hand held non motorised tools

Removal does not include motor vehicles being taken onto and into the intertidal area for transporting mangroves or debris

The removal does not damage or disturb areas of salt marsh and/or sea grass habitat

Cleared vegetation to be removed from the coastal marine area

No use of chemical herbicides

The removal does not occur in area where mangroves are serving to mitigate coastal erosion.”

We have located several photos of the area kindly lent to us by residents. Anyone having others the committee would love

to copy them.

We need as many volunteers as we can get, especially youngsters particularly with your energy and agility. There will be a prize for the biggest tonnage collected. Waste mangroves will be taken across the river to 737 Leigh Rd for burning. Sausage sizzle to follow at the boat ramp area. (Around lunchtime)

Figure Photo taken around 1953 showing very little mangrove growth

THE POINT WELLS CRIER - VOLUME SEVEN ISSUE ONE

To the Community and Ratepayers Association Incorporated,

I have been viewing the suggestions for traffic control as proposed in the Point Wells Crier.

Item 1. (From the Crier) Options! “Do you support reduced traffic speeds in Point Wells “WHERE THERE ARE NO FOOTPATHS”

How can anyone claim there are no footpaths? On average 95 of the properties in Point Wells have a 3 to 4 metre grass verge in front of their dwellings, so much better to walk on than hard pavements, and people do use them, but when there are no vehicles about they walk on the road, QUITE SAFELY. Are you trying to turn Point Wells into another suburb of Auckland? The only road with few residential grass verges is Point Wells Road, however, if you look along that Road you see the Cycle Path.

Now there’s your safety problem for Point Wells residents. (The Cycle Path)

You have children walking, some on bikes with their parents, walkers with dogs on leads, adults on bikes, occasionally a motorbike riding there. All that opposing movement in a relatively confined space will surely lead to an accident, and be assured

falling from a bike can be inflict serious injury or even be fatal.

Item 2: The four choices for traffic calming on page 1 must be discounted immediately. The reason for this is safety of all the citizens of Point Wells.

I will explain. The Rodney District Council before it was absorbed into Auckland City designated Omaha and Point Wells a “Sunami Zone” and this was noted on all the LIM’s for the two areas.

Should there be a “sunami” in the future, then any restriction to the only escape route from our village must not be installed. A speeding sign can be ignored in an emergency but the first four options will physically slow the exit of people that would need to leave the village very quickly.

I have had it said to me by a volunteer for our fire service that any further restriction for them to get to the fire station in any emergency may extend greater loss to property and possibly life. As you will be aware they are not exempt from the law with regard to speeding until they are in an emergency vehicle. Also any regular emergency vehicles will be slowed with physical restrictions i.e fire/police/ambulance into the village.

I hold some concern for the validity of the “Survey” when in your editorial on

page 15 of the Crier you state that any one requiring more copies please contact you. On that basis I understand that residents can “flood” your committee with their priorities creating an unrepresented bias for which ever option they go for.

I take very seriously the quality of this village and in no way do I want to see it become just another Suburb of a city, I left the city years ago for that reason. Everything concerning “traffic control” has associated with it coloured lined, (maybe flashing lights) humps and bumps that would be out of place here.

I am in favour of extending the cycle way/footpath to the village store.

THE SPEEDING IN POINT WELLS HAS NOT INCREASED, HOWEVER, SINCE THE 50KM WAS MOVED OUT TO WHERE IT IS NOW PEOPLE HAVE CHOSEN TO IGNORE IT BECAUSE THERE’S NO NEED FOR IT TO START THERE, NOT EVEN WITH THE INCREASE IN RESIDENCES PLANNED FOR THE VILLAGE. MOVE IT BACK AND MOST OF THE PROBLEM WILL GO AWAY.

Yours truly Howard Dimmock 34 Harbour View Road.

It's good to hear the views of the community as we think about what can be done to improve road safety. In response to the feedback received to last year's survey, an update has been provided as an insert in this edition of the Crier. We welcome everyone's feedback on this.
