OK POLLSTERS. TAKE notice preseason predictors. The Lone Star Conference has produced an NCAA Division IInational football champion. And it has produced another Harlon HillTrophy recipient. For years, the league hasn’t had its share of top-rankedfootball teams and hasn’t had its share of individual honorees. The winning of the national title by Texas A&M-Commercelast weekend and the taking of the Harlon Hill Trophy, which goesto the NCAA Division II player of the year, should show that theLSC produces as impressively as the other Division II leagues. And the LSC runnerup ended up being the national champion.Commerce finished second in the LSC race. Midwestern Statedefeated the Lions and won the league title. The Lions became the first LSC team to take the NCAADivision II title since Southwest Texas won in 1981 and 1982. They were the first conference team to reach thechampionship game since the Javelinas did it in 1994. Quarterback Luis Lopez was the third LSC player to win theHarlon Hill Trophy. Javelina running back Johnny Bailey receivedthe honor three times, in 1987, 1988 and 1989. Bernard Scott ofAbilene Christian was the 2008 recipient.

THE NATIONAL FOOTBALL title for Commerce is actuallythe second for the school. The 1972 team won the NAIA championship. The Javelinas, who have an NCAA Division II runnerup trophyalong with several semifinal trophies, won seven NAIA titles beforemoving to the NCAA in the early 1980s.

Between 1969 and 1979, LSC teams won 10 of the 11 NAIAchampionships.

The Javelinas took titles in 1969, 1970, 1974, 1975, 1976 and1979. Abilene Christian was champion in 1973 and 1977. AngeloState was the winner in 1978 and Commerce took its title in 1972.

THE RECENT NCAA Division I-AA quarterfinal footballplayoff game between Wofford (S.C.) and North Dakota State inthe Fargodome in Fargo, N.D., brought back memories of theseasons when the Javelinas played each of those schools.

The Javelinas went to Greenville, S.C., for the 1970 NAIAnational championship game and Wofford was the opponent.

The Javelinas defeated the “home” team, 38-7, for its thirdnational title and second consecutive trophy.

Wofford is in Spartanburg, S.C., only a few miles from thegame site.

The Javelinas played North Dakota State three times, each inthe Fargodome. The Bison won the 1996, 1998 and 2000 gamesand has now become a power in NCAA Division I-AA.

A SMALL COLLEGE basketball Hall of Fame was inauguratedin 2016 and the second class of inductees was recently brought intothe hall, which recognizes the outstanding players from NCAADivision II and III and NAIA schools.

This year’s inductees were: (Continued on Page 3)

Quarterback Luis Perez ofTexas A&M-Commerce wasnamed the 2017 Harlon HillTrophy recipient last week, givingthe Lone Star Conference its fifthtrophy.

Texas A&I running backJohnny Bailey received the trophythree consecutive years in the late1980s and Abilene Christian’srunning back Bernard Scott wonthe award in 2008.

Bailey is the only player toreceive the award three times, andhe was runnerup his fourthseason of play. He was thehonoree in 1987, 1988 and 1989after being runnerup his freshmanseason in 1986, his best statisticalseason.

The Harlon Hill Trophy goesto the NCAA Division II collegefootball player of the year.

The Division II sportsinformation directors select therecipient each fall.

Perez led his team to theNCAA Division II championshipgame last weekend where theLions defeated West Florida inKansas City, Kan.

The 2017 Harlon Hill Trophyrecipient was announced lastweek in Florence, Ala.

It goes to the outstandingNCAA Division II football player, the one designated as thedivision’s player of the year.

Texas A&M-Commercequarterback Luis Perez was namedthis year’s award winner.

And while he will receiveaccolades at the Harlon HillTrophy banquet in January, thepeople in Alabama and those whohave had a long-time associationwith the Harlon Hill Trophy nodoubt will still recall the TexasA&I player who was presentedthe award three consecutive timesin 1987-89.

Twenty-eight years after heconcluded his college career,Javelina running back JohnnyBailey is still the most decoratedcollegiate football player inhistory. And those honorsinclude the three Harlon Hilltrophies.

He received honors, setrecords and compiled yardage infootball that stand as the bestever for a collegiate athlete.

Bailey was on the Javelinateams in 1986-89.

His accomplishments areunexcelled in the history ofcollege football.

Bailey, from Houston YatesHigh School, rushed for 6,320yards and became only thesecond back to rush for more than6,000 yards in a career. The otherwas Tony Dorsett of theUniversity of Pittsburgh, who had6,082 in his four years. Baileysurpassed Dorsett’s mark at mid-season of his senior season. Bailey had 7,803 all-purposeyards, also the best ever at thetime. He finished third on thecollegiate scoring chart with 428points. He had 580 additional rushingyards in the three post-seasonplayoff games but these did notcount in career records at the time.Since, the NCAA has accepted

Javelina Bailey Still Rules as MostHonored College Football Player

post-season statistics as a part ofthe career figures.

Had the post-season yardsbeen tacked on, he would haveclosed with 6,800 career rushingyards.

His best single-gameperformance saw him rush for 254yards, those coming in hissophomore season. Bailey opened his collegecareer with four consecutive 200-plus yards games. No otherathlete had had such a collegedebut. He rushed for 100 or more

yards in his first 11 college games. His best rushing season was

his first when he picked up 2,011yards, the best single-seasonperformance for an LSC athlete. At the time, only two other collegebacks, any classification, had everrushed for more than 2,000 yardsin a season. Bailey ranks as the all-timeleading rusher in the state andLone Star Conference. The Javelina ace led the LSC inrushing for four consecutive year
