InWorcester,weheardtheinspirationalwordsofEugeneLeoConnolly,retiredPrincipalofConcordHighSchool,NewHampshire,andaSpringTieldCollegealum.GenetouchedourheartswithhisdescriptionofSpringTieldCollegeasthe“HarvardUniversityofPhysicalEducation.”Gene,wholiveswithALS,sharedhishumor,hisheart,andhispositivitywithusall.
WealsoheardthewisdomoftheexceptionalShirleyHolt-Hale,whoremindedusofwhatisatstakewhenwesettleforlessthebestpossible
educationforourstudentshereinMassachusetts.

“Get”tovs.“Have”to….Onelittlewordcanmakeahugedifference.Mylifeonapersonalnotehaschangeddrasticallyinthelastfewmonths.AwonderfulfriendofourfamilywasjustdiagnosedwithALSthispastfall.HewentfrombikingandhikinginSeptembertonowbeinginanelectricwheelchair,unabletowalkorcareforhisownpersonalneeds.Markisjust53yearsoldandoneofthemostbeautifulhumanbeingsIhaveevermet.
Inmyeverydayroutinewiththingsaroundthehouse,takingcareofmyfamily,exercising,walkingourdog,IamremindedthatI“get”todoallthisandnotthatI“have”todoallthis.Iwasstandingatthebottomofthestairsonenightandcarryingthelastloadoflaundryforthedayandthinkingtomyself,“Aggh,somanystairsandIamsotired.”ButthenmythoughtswentbacktoMarkandIquicklycaughtmyselfthinking,“Igettowalkupthestairs,hecannot.”It’samazinghowmuchwecangetcaughtupinthedrudgeryofthemundane,butisitreallymundane?Ithinkabouttheprivilegeofbeingyourexecutivedirectoreachday.I“get”toworkforourprofessions;I“get”togotothestatehousetoconnectwithothers;I“get”toorganizeprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitieswithourBoard.I“get”toconversewithmembersonsomanylevels.Iknowthatyouallfacechallengesinyourindividualschoolsonadailybasisandbelieveme,Iunderstandandknowitisnoteasy.Butwhenweallgobacktoourclassroomsafterthisvacation,thereisnothingordinaryaboutthisact.Actuallyitisextraordinary.Weall“get”toteachandre-connectwithstudents,weall“get”toexercisewiththem,toconverseandtohelpthemintheirjourneythroughlife.We“get”tobelifesavers,counselors,parents,andteachersallrolledintoonehumanbeing.We“get”tohelpthelonely,disadvantaged,isolatedstudents.We“get”toinspiretheproTicientmovers,theexuberantandjubilantachievers.We“get”tomakeanimpactonALLofourstudents.We“get”towakeupeachmorning,holdourowncoffeecup,hugourfamilies,driveourcars/walk/biketoworkandenjoythehardbutsatisfyingcareerofbeinganeducator.
Inmylife,myfriendMarkhaschangedmyattitudetorealizethathavinggoodhealth,abeautifulfamily,manyfriendsandadreamjobthatI“get”toworkateachandeverydayareallblessings.Suddenly,allthisdoesnotseemmundaneanymore.

ofathletecomingWesternMass.,lookatMasslive.com’sdiscussionoftheprospects.FromaSportPsychologyperspective,IamannuallyintriguedbytheresilienceandconTidencetheseathletesdisplaywhenputonthemainstage,manyofthemfortheTirsttime.Weallknowthenumbers.Theprobabilityofmakingittotheprosformosthighschoolbasketballplayersisslim.Whileeachschoolhasafewkeyplayersfromwhomthetournamentisanauditionforcollegiateandprofessionalathletics,forothersthisisthepinnacleoftheircareerandamomenttheywilllikelyneverforget.It’strulyaspecialeventforthehighschoolathletes.
TheCoalitionOrganizedforHealthEducationinSchools(COHES)wascreatedtopromoteandsupportcomprehensivehealtheducationatthelocalandstatelevels.ThissupportincludedprovidingprofessionaldevelopmentopportunitiesoncurrenthealthtopicstoprofessionalsintheTield,andadvocatingforhealtheducationtobeanintegralcomponentofachild’seducationintheMassachusetts.SinceCOHESdisbanded,theyhaveentrustedMAHPERDwithcustodialcaretotheirfundstoprovidescholarshipsforprofessionalsandstudents.Tocontinuethatmission,theMassachusettsAssociationofHealth,Physical
Education,RecreationandDance(MAHPERD)willacceptapplicationsfortwo$1,000scholarshipsonbehalfofCOHES.

MAHPERDmemberArthurWilliamIworsleyunexpectedlypassedawayonDecember31,2016.HegrewupinLawrenceandattendedStPatrick’sElementarySchoolandthenLawrenceHighSchool.WhileatLHShedevelopedhisloveofphysicaleducation.HeparticipatedinindoorandoutdoortrackandTieldwithaconcentrationonthelongandtriplejumps.HewasamemberoftheLawrenceHighSchoolband.ArtcontinuedhisloveofeducationandofsportsatDoaneCollegeinCrete,Nebraska.HewasonthefootballteamforoneyearandonthetrackandTieldteamforfouryears.Hegraduatedin1970withaBachelor’sdegreeineducation.Hesupplemented
hiscashTlowbyteachingphysicaleducationatthelocalcatholicelementaryschoolfor$1anhour.Hetaughtgradesonethroughsixduringhisofftimewhenhedidnothaveaclass.Artmethisthentobewife,KatherineGraves,atDoane.Aftergraduation,hegotajobteachingphysicaleducationatWestElementarySchoolinAndover.HetaughtatWestformostofhis41years.Hefoundtheperfectjobattherighttimeattherightschool.Helovedteachingandmakingphysicaleducationanimportantpartofeverychild’seducationatWest.WhileteachingatWest,ArtcontinuedhiseducationatLowellStateCollegeandreceivedhisMaster’sdegreeinEducation.Afterretirementin2011,ArtcontinuedtoteachbybeingasubstituteteacherofPhysicalEducationforWestElementarySchool,HighPlainElementarySchool,andBancroftSchool,allofAndover.ThechildreninthoseschoolswouldseehisSmartCarintheparkinglotandtheywouldhopethathewouldbetheretoteachthem.AnotheraspectofArt’slifewashisloveoftrackandTield.UndertheleadershipofRichardCollinshebecamealongandtriplejumpcoachforAndoverHighSchool.Hestartedcoachingintheearly1970sandwascoachingwithPeterComeauandtherestofthecoachingstaffuntilhisdeath.Manyofhistrackathletessayheinspiredthemtobebetterpeoplenotjustbetterathletes.
ArtwasawonderfulmemberofourMAHPERDfamily.Hisengagingsmileandbrightauraaroundalloureventswillbemissed.

MAHPERD&IHT:Ahugesuccess…andgrowing!
Asyouknow,MAHPERDinquiredaboutastatewidesolutionthatusestheIHTSpiritSystemtoeasilycollect,manageandreportcustomizabledatathroughacollaborativepartnershipinordertobuildaviable,largescalemodelthatcanenhancetheeffortsofteachers,associationmembership,andadvocacy.Well,PhaseOnewasasuccesswith10teachers/schoolsystemsbeinginvolved.Afterseeingthepotentialofwhatthiscouldpossiblymeanforphysicaleducationsprogramsinourstate,moreandmoreteachersaskedMAHPERDaboutthisexcitinginitiative.
To date, we have 125 physical educators and 39 school districts involved in Phase Two. We could not be happier. Our goal is for every school system in MA to be involved in this data collection for assessment in physical education to serve students and make a positive impact within our programs. This will allow for a clearinghouse of data that will involve assessments in PE Metrics, SEL and other assessments that each individual would like to utilize within their classrooms. The IHT system will give us a clear snapshot of physical literacy within each school. Every teacher participant has received free software and free professional development including workshops, webinars and second to none assistance from the IHT technology team!
TheIHTSpiritSystemprovidesphysicaleducators,theiradministrators,andMAHPERDwiththecustomizabledatacollectionandreportingsoftware,wrist-basedwearabletechnology,andongoingtrainingandcustomersupportthatwilldocumenttheimpactofprogramming,leadership,advocacyandthesubstantiationandallocationofincreasedESSAfundingopportunities.TheSpiritSystemissimpleanduser-friendly.Itmakesiteasytocapturedatawhileprovidingvariouscustomizedreportsfromtheindividualstudenttodatacollectioninvolvingmultipleschoolsystemsanddistrictsthroughoutthestate.Ourpartnershipsolutionwillalsohelpinunitingallstakeholdersandstrengthenthephysicaleducationprofessionoverall.
