Designed sound means that the audio system is trimmed tosuit the acoustics in each specific Volvo model. The radio,amplifier, loudspeakers – all the components are designeddown to the smallest detail to offer exactly the rightcharacteristics needed to produce the most natural soundpossible in your Volvo.

For example, every radio has a built-in equalizer wherethe sound curve from the deepest bass to the highest treble is set separately to suit each individual Volvo model.And every loudspeaker’s magnet, cone, suspension andother details are specially designed to suit the specificlocation for which it is intended.

Loudspeaker location is an engineering parameter that

is already taken into consideration when the car is at thedesign stage, and it is optimised to provide perfect stereosound reproduction in the passenger compartment. Ad-vanced sound measurement and hour after hour of listeningprovide invaluable input before the final format of the audiosystem is decided for each car model.

In addition, the audio system’s appearance harmonises perfectly with the interior design. And of course, advancedelectronic systems are utilised fully in your Volvo*. The Premium Sound System has been developed for one singlepurpose: to give you the very best sound quality in your car – without compromise. We have selected the very best loudspeakers,amplifiers and radios and adapted them to suit your particularVolvo model. Premium Sound loudspeakers are designed to produceexcellent resolution and perfect dynamics. The separate amplifier is very powerful and specially tailored to suit the Premium Soundloudspeakers. As a result of the amplifier’s high capacity in com-bination with the loudspeakers’ power threshold and exceptionaltransient reproduction, you can enjoy natural sound reproductionat all volumes. Dolby Surround Pro Logic*

Dolby Surround Pro Logic* provides an audio experience that isparticularly realistic. The loudspeakers are supplemented with acentre loudspeaker in the middle of the instrument panel. A soundprocessor divides the two stereo channels into a left-middle-rightsound pattern to provide a more three-dimensional audio profile.What is more, there is a power channel that enhances the percep-tion of space in the rear loudspeakers. The result is an open, clearand natural sound with a remarkable ability to generate a sense ofimmediate presence. It's an audio experience that is unique in thecar world – you'll experience the music as though you were in aconcert hall. Available for the Volvo S80, S60, V70, Cross Countryand C70.

The Premium Sound system in the Volvo S60,featuring thirteen first-classloudspeakers and a separ-ate 4x75 W amplifier,offers you an audio experi-ence that you’ll feel throughout your body.

Dolby Surround Pro Logic gives the driver and front seatpassenger a uniquely detailed and three-dimensionalsound profile. In order for everyone in the car to be able to enjoy the wide stereo sound pattern, there is a three-channel mode without the output from Dolby Surround Pro Logic*.

Several of the audio systems in the HU series can be controlled without taking yourhand off the steering wheel. You can adjust

volume, switch radio stations and change to the next or previous track on the CD without

taking your hands off the wheel.

Easy to use controls and access to the latest traffic information – Volvo’s audio systems leave you free to concentrate fully on the road and at the same time enjoy your favourite music to the full.

Crash-tested equipment

All the components in Volvo’s audio systems meet Volvo’sstringent safety requirements. They have been crash-tested inevery Volvo model to ensure that they do not splinter or breakaway in a collision. One example of attention to safety is thatthe CD tray automatically retracts if you do not remove thedisc from the CD player within 12 seconds after the Eject button is pressed.

Anti-theft protection

The anti-theft protection with which our audio systems arefitted is designed to make life so difficult for the would-be thiefthat he would rather give your car and audio equipment awide berth. That is why the radios in the HU series, for instance,only function in the Volvo car in which they were originallyinstalled. What is more, they are fully integrated into theinstrument panel, so they are very difficult indeed to steal.Volvo’s other radio units feature an anti-theft code or a remov-able keypad – or both.

Volvo’s attention to safety naturally encompasses the

audio system too. You should be able to change stations

and adjust the sound quality without being distracted

from the road. What is more, all the audio equipment is

thoroughly crash-tested so we know that it conforms to

Volvo’s stringent safety standards. And of course, attention

to safety also includes attention to anti-theft security

– your audio system should remain just that: yours.

Full control

The audio system in your Volvo does not only sound fantastic,it also gives you access to the latest traffic information so thatyou can avoid tailbacks and other obstacles. The RDS radiohas features such as traffic information priority, programme typemonitoring, autostore and much more. With RDS, you do not need to change frequency while you drive – the radio auto-matically switches to the most powerful transmitter for the station you have selected.

Large, easy to handle controls allow you to concentrate onyour driving. What is more, several of our audio systems havecontrols in the steering wheel. Some of them even adjust volume automatically to suit your speed, and lower volumeautomatically when the car phone is in use.

Volvo’s aerials are tailored to give the best reception in yourVolvo. Some of the radios have a Diversity aerial that minimisesinterference in all reception conditions.

The two 9" sub-woofer PremiumSound bass loudspeakers behind

A separate amplifier with a powerful output allows you to enjoy even bettersound quality, since you can turn up thevolume and listen to music with a widedynamic range (in other words, musicwith a wide difference between the loudand quiet passages) and still have very little distortion.

A separate CD changer allows you toswitch between several discs. Volvo’s CD changers are easy to operate from the radio’s control panel – just touch abutton to change discs. You can play thediscs in sequence, you can select the discand track of your choice or let the systemchoose a track at random.

In order to be able to use a separateamplifier or CD changer, the radio must be equipped with special outputs.

DIVERSITY AERIAL SYSTEM For the best possible reception in difficult condi-tions, two aerials are used – the radio auto-matically selects the strongest signal on theFM band.

DOLBY B A system for reducing noise fromcassette tapes recorded using the Dolbysystem.

DOLBY PL (Dolby Surround Pro Logic*)The audio unit is fitted with a sound pro-cessor and centre loudspeaker which give a very realistic three-dimensional sound.

EON (Enhanced Other Network) Localtraffic information on another channel on thenational network is automatically received (if the TP function is on), no matter whetheryou are listening to the radio, a tape or aCD. The system automatically returns to theoriginal channel when the information ends(see PTY).

FADER Balances the sound between thefront and rear loudspeakers.

NEWS If the news button is pressed, you do not need to worry about missing thenews when you are listening to a differentchannel on a national network. News pro-grammes automatically break in.

NEXT (NXT) This is used to skip a track.Simply touch the button and the player willmove on to the next track on tape or CD.

PINCH-OFF To prevent tangling, the tapeis released from the drive mechanism andpressure roller when the cassette player isswitched off.

PRE-SELECT The pre-select buttons enable you to choose between pre-set stations. They are also used to select the CDs in the CD changer.

PTY (Programme Type) Specify the typeof programme you wish to listen to and theradio automatically selects this type, withoutyour needing to choose a channel. On mostVolvo systems, this information can be programmed and stored. The radio thensearches for the desired programme type,no matter whether you are listening to theradio, a tape or a CD, provided that it isbeing broadcast on the nationwide networkor a local channel linked to the network.

RANDOM (RND) Press the button and thetracks will be played in random order fromone or more CD discs.

REPEAT Repeats the latest track played onCD or tape.

RDS (Radio Data System) The radioautomatically finds the most powerful trans-mitter for the programme you have selected,so you never need to retune during a longjourney.

SEEK The radio automatically scans the frequency band until it finds the next stationand then stays there until you press theseek button again.

TELEPHONE MUTING The audio volume isautomatically turned down when you useyour car telephone.

3-CH (Three-channel) The stereo sound atthe front is enhanced with the output fromthe centre loudspeaker, which provides awider stereo pattern for everyone in the car.

TP (Traffic Information Priority) If youpress the TP button, you will receive all traffic information that is broadcast on localchannels or nationwide networks with EON.Any bulletins automatically break in, no matter whether you are listening to the radio,a tape or a CD.
