Royal Caribbean - Symphony of the Seas

Learn what you can expect when sailing in 2018 as we welcome you to the next generation of cruising…

Entering Eden

The ground-breaking Celebrity Edge has already drawn attention for its revolutionary Magic Carpet cantilevered platform, which rises 13 storeys above sea level. This innovative ship has recaptured the imaginations of cruise enthusiasts with the announcement of ‘Eden’. A unique three-deck venue, Eden is a place guests can relax while surrounded by lush tropical vegetation. Circled by a 300-ft long ramp, Eden will feature a 20-ft ‘Library of Plants’ and a fine dining venue offering interactive cooking demonstrations.

Take in the Seaview

Experience beach condo living while enjoying unrivalled ocean vistas onboard the MSC Seaview. It comes with a 360°promenade complete with glass balustrades, allowing you to soak up panoramic sea views. The promenade will serve as a recreation area, so you can relax in nearby bars and restaurants, dine al fresco near the sea or catch some sun.

Part of your Symphony

Get ready for the introduction of Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas, which will be the largest cruise ship ever built and it's scheduled to launch in April 2018. It will provide various innovations including a mobile check-in service. This allows passengers to download an app and take a ‘security selfie’, with their identity being verified by facial recognition

technology, cutting down waiting times upon arrival. It will also feature the ‘ultimate family suite’ which will give younger guests their own floor-to-ceiling LEGO climbing wall, a 212 sq. ft. wrap-around balcony with whirlpool, 3D cinema room with popcorn machine and even a slide!

Dazzled by the Eclipse

Enjoy a new level of luxury and exclusivity onboard the Scenic Eclipse, when it takes to the seas in 2018. It will boast a near one-on-one staff-to-passenger ratio, ensuring guests’ needs are always met, and offer unique activities like helicopter and submarine rides. The ship will provide one-of-a-kind itineraries like the ‘Taste of Cuba & Caribbean’ programme, immersing passengers in their destinations. Billed as the world’s first 'discovery yacht’, the Eclipse will boast an intriguing sleek design allowing it to access even the smallest ports.

Exploring the unexplored

Hurtigruten is a leader in one-of-a-kind getaway experiences, and recently released their latest vessel, the MS Roald Amundsen, which is packed with high tech features that are designed to enhance your cruise. This state-of-the-art vessel comes with an immersive edutainment ‘Activity Centre’ with gadgets like touchscreens and VR headsets, as well as photography and biology workshops, allowing guests to truly understand their unique destinations. The MS Roald Amundsen will be equipped with ‘Blueye underwater drones’ as well as kayaks, so passengers can delve into secret underwater worlds from the comfort of their ship.

“Me and my partner decided to take a luxury cruise with Regent, and were very impressed with what we found. The ship was delightful, as it was intimate and elegant with opulent design touches in the vein of chandeliers and marble flooring. We opted for a Grand Suite on the Seven Seas Voyager, which allowed us to retreat to a well-appointed oasis and enjoy good sea views from our own balcony.

“The service couldn’t have been more attentive, as there was a friendly face to greet us every time we needed a little help. The ship boasted a range of luxurious amenities as well, like sophisticated lounges, whirlpools, a relaxed library and boutiques selling goods such as jewellery and perfumes. The cuisine was top notch, with dishes such as succulent steaks, delicate desserts and grilled-to-order burgers on the menu, capping off a fantastic experience”.

“We just went on a Caribbean cruise with Royal Caribbean and we had an absolutely fantastic time. There’s nothing like sailing on the crystal-clear waters of the stunning Caribbean Sea, while visiting exotic places like the Bahamas and St Kitts, with their miles of white-sandy beach. But it was the ship itself, as well as the friendly staff, that made our time onboard the Anthem truly special.

“The ship had a tonne of fun activities like surf and skydiving simulators, dodgems, a circus school, table football, sport courts and a rock climbing wall. There was even a spa where us adults could go to relax every once in a while. The Anthem also boasted a range of delightful restaurants serving everything from light bites to Japanese cuisine and we loved every minute on this amazing ship. We’d recommend ocean family cruising to anyone”.

Lucy, Travel Counsellor.

OCEANCRUISING

Sail across the world’s oceans from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and visit exotic places in style. Enjoy fun for all the family on vast ocean liners with comfortable staterooms – some with balconies boasting sea views, as well as fun amenities like pools, water parks at sea, ice-skating, rock climbing and dining options for all tastes - from pizza and ice cream to gourmet cuisine.

With exquisite décor, impeccable service, gourmet cuisine and luxurious touches (helicopters and fridges lled with your favourite tipple!), cruising holidays oer an extraordinary way to see the world.

If you’re new to cruising or are looking to try a new ship or route, here are a few ideas to inspire your next holiday…

Exploring the world by cruise ship: 3 luxury voyages

A voyage by tall ship

Modern cruise ships oer an incredible array of facilities and destinations but there’s somethingincredibly romantic about a ship on the sea with those giant sails billowing, isn’t there? And you’ll still be treated to more than a little luxury, too!

As well as those huge sails and gleaming wood, expect dining rooms, swimming pools, libraries and even a lounge with glass portholes that are under the water so you can peep out into the deep blue sea.

Wondering what a voyage on a tall ship is really like? Travel Counsellor Sue set sail on Royal Clipper and said it was fabulous, with a laidback atmosphere for the "discerning holiday maker who just wants to sit back, relax and go with the ow".

Sue also had this to say about the tall ship she sailed on: "Grand but compact in size, The Royal Clipper gracefully manoeuvred us into ports that other larger cruise ships cannot access. Our cruise took us from the beautiful city of Venice to majestic Rome calling in at the wonderful little harbours of Rovinj and Hvar, gliding us onwards to the marvels of Dubrovnik, Kotor, Corfu, Naxos, Taormina, Capri and Ponza. All in all, I would denitely take another Star Clipper cruise and would highly recommend the experience...I think the Caribbean or French Polynesia beckons next!"

An adventure cruise around Kimberley, Western Australia

Travel Counsellor Julie recommends cruising around Kimberly, in Western Australia - it’s an area of spectacular beauty, with a varied landscape of miles of coastline, rugged clis, and deep green vegetation.

And Julie also recommends sailing on one of the smaller vessels because you can explore more of this beautiful area. You don’t have to forego luxury on these smaller ships though!

Expect gourmet cuisine, elegant cabins, and an on-board helicopter to whisk you away to explore!.

Holland America Line oers the best in “premium” cruising, on stylish mid-sized

a library and internet centre powered by the New York Times, regional cookery

demonstrations at the Culinary Arts theatre, an in depth destination programme,

quality hairdryers and complimentary fruit in all spacious staterooms, many of which

oer a private balcony.

It’s never too early to start introducing your children to the joys of travelling around this big, beautiful world of ours. But for parents it can be nice to have some home comforts on hand as well! That’s why family-friendly cruises are becoming more popular every year. You can set sail with your little adventurers in a ship that’s made for families, safe in the knowledge that your every need will be catered to.

From family-friendly food and activities to comfortable cabins and babysitting services, cruises can achieve that delicate balance of entertaining children while treating their parents to some well-deserved relaxation in a way that other holidays just don’t. And it’s certainly not just an underwhelming ball pool and some colouring in that’s on oer for the children these days…

Adventures at sea for little ones (and big kids too!)

Adrenaline-fuelled activities

Start to explore one of the impressive mega-ships and you’ll nd all manner of surprising activities to enjoy, from rock climbing to skydiving simulators. Step aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship to race some laps of an ocean-faring go-kart track, soar into the skies on a bungee trampoline, or learn to juggle at circus school. Meanwhile on Royal Caribbean ships you could nd climbing walls, FlowRider surf simulators and white-knuckle zip wires. Their Quantum of the Seas ship boasts the spectacular North Star observation pod – a London Eye-style capsule that moves up to 300 feet above the ocean waves to bring you truly breath-taking views. Or there’s Carnival’s BikeSky Ride, which sees passengers pedalling around a lofty circuit 150 feet above the upper deck. Just don’t look down!

Movie magic

Every parent knows that the captivating power of the silver screen is a real holiday winner. While most cruise ships have a cinema of some kind, look out for those with futuristic 4D cinemas for a fully immersive experience and Carnival’s enormous outdoor screens, perfect for a warm, relaxing family evening.

Some ships go a step further and bring the movies to life, with themed cruises and activities. Try Royal Caribbean’s ‘DreamWorks Experience’, where children can meet characters from lm favourites like Shrek and Kung Fu Panda, or Disney Cruises with their themed deck parties, lively performances and the ever popular princess transformations on oer in the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.

Splashing around

Yes, you’re probably expecting to nd a small swimming pool on a cruise ship – but a full-size water park? Families with water babies on their hands will love the aqua-tastic fun on-board many ships today. Carnival’s waterpark has everything you’d nd on shore, from thrilling waterslides to child-friendly play pools. Love to get your adrenaline pumping? Try MSC Preziosa’s hair-raising ‘Vertigo’ slide, the longest to be found at sea. With over 390 feet of exciting twists and turns, including a particularly daring see-through section over the waves, this is watery fun at its best.

Clubs and classes

Young imaginations need plenty of stimulation and the dizzying array of kids’ clubs aboard cruise ships will give them plenty to do – as well as the chance to make new friends. Teenagers can hang out in their own areas playing basketball and air hockey, indulge in teen-specic spa treatments or learn how to spin records at DJ academy. Younger children will love Disney’s Oceaneer Club, with movie-themed play areas like the Monsters Inc. Laugh Floor, virtual games and interactive animation studios. Crystal oers popular classes for families, with cookie baking classes naturally topping the list!

Exploring new shores

Of course, one of the main appeals of a cruise is the temptation of distant destinations. And that’s what we want to show our families, isn’t it? There’s nothing more exciting than that ‘land ahoy’ moment, when it’s time to watch their little faces light up as you set o to explore exciting new lands. Whether you want to see the Northern Lights in Alaska, enjoy the watersports on a Caribbean island, or look around the vibrant cities of Europe, there’s so much world to show your little wanderers and their wide, curious eyes.

Group cruising with Carnival Cruise Line

Share the voyage of a lifetime with your loved ones by embarking on a group cruise, allowing you to visit spectacular new places and try thrilling activities as you make lasting memories together.

Group cruising

Cruises are fantastic for groups, as they cater to everyone in your party. No matter your budget, dietary requirements or interest, you’ll find something on a cruise ship to please everyone. Whether you’re looking for a holiday with friends, a family reunion at sea, a wild hen or stag party before the big day, or connecting with colleagues, you can travel together on a cruise.

Ahead of the game

There are issues you should consider before arranging a group cruise. Factor everyone’s budgets, interests and destinations of choice into the equation, so you can find the ideal trip. It’s wise to book far ahead of your intended date of departure so you can find a ship that’ll have enough rooms, and this is so much easier when you have a personal Travel Counsellor. They will do the leg work for you, using their cruise industry expertise to find the right ship for your group as far in advance as possible.

Perks and conditions

Keep in mind that some cruise lines provide perks for groups, although you may have to fulfil certain criteria to qualify. Carnival is one line which will provide favourable rates and an array of amenities to groups, as long as you book at least eight staterooms. They will also arrange group shore excursions and if there are over 50 people in your party, and they’ll even design bespoke itineraries.

Fred.Olsen are another line which cater to groups. Enjoy a range of complementary perks including a group photograph, preferential group dining on request, private group afternoon tea, onboard spend and drinks parties. Depending on the cruise, if your party is between 15 and 30 people your group leader could receive a complimentary place on the ship.

Finding your line

Some cruise lines specialise in catering to certain types of groups. For a family reunion consider Royal Caribbean who provide fun activities for all the family like rock climbing, ice-skating, golf and mini water parks with slides and water-squirting cannons. Hurtigruten are ideal for group adventure trips, as they specialise in explorer voyages. Travel to fascinating locations like Svalbard, Antarctica and Nicaragua while trying activities including snowmobile safaris, lava-tube caving and piranha fishing!

Team building

Group cruises are ideal for businesses, as there are lines that deliver team building experiences. MSC Cruises provide a range of team bonding activities like mini golf, aerobics classes, quiz games, fancy dress parties, and shuffle board matches. They are also willing to tailor their dining options – which includes French, Thai, Tex-Mex, Lebanese and Italian cuisine – to your requirements with events such as special business lunches and gala dinners. On certain ships you can book your group into the MSC Yacht Club which has a concierge reception, exclusive facilities and private butler service.

See the world together on a group cruise

“I’ll never tire of river cruising. There’s nothing like sailing down idyllic waterways like the Rhine or the Seine, passing the kinds of attractions you’ve always dreamed of seeing in real life like the Eiffel Tower, and watching the locals go about their everyday lives on the river banks beyond.

“I’ve been lucky enough to cruise along the Elbe with Viking on one of their classic long ships. What a treat! The service was impeccable, my surroundings were charming, and the ship was filled with well-appointed lounges and observation decks where we could relax while watching the world pass by. The food was exquisite, and we really enjoyed taking advantage of the ship’s idyllic al fresco dining, as we watched the sights and sounds of the Elbe pass us by”

In years gone by, we loaded up the car and made the trip to see grandma and grandpa. Or, grandma and grandpa came to us, camping out for a week during the holidays. With more ights across the globe and plenty of family friendly spots to enjoythough, a holiday abroad seems like a perfect way for everyone to spend time together - and to leave behind the stresses entertaining at home brings.

Hopping on a plane to warmer shores feels a little more challenging though, doesn’t it? You need accommodation to please everyone from your ve-year-old to your 75-plus mother. Activities to make teens giggle and entertain grandparents. And, destinations to charm everyone from little ones to mum and dad.

And it’s here that a cruise holiday comes into its own. Gone are the hours spent trying to entertain everyone in the family. In their place? Excursions to delight history bus to thrill-seekers, food for even the fussiest of eaters, and so many on-board activities, you might wonder how you’ll t everything into each day.

As Travel Counsellor Lani, who travelled with two young children on her rst cruise last year, says, "with nearly everything included, you know up front what your holiday is costing you (aside from drinks and shore excursions) and it’s entirely up to you how much you do – if you like being on the go all the time, then there is a full programme of activities that could have you running from one end of the ship to the other every day, but you can also choose to just sit on a deck chair and stare out to sea (with a cocktail or two if you so desire!) and be equally as happy.”

Known as ‘multigenerational cruises,’ taking your extended family on a cruise holiday oers a fun and hassle-free option for everyone you’re travelling with. You’ll nd children’s clubs for little ones and separate clubs for teens, so they can explorewith their new-found friends. A variety of restaurants ensuring foodies stay happy during their trip. And, the array of ports to explore, optional excursions, and spectacular evening shows mean it’s almost certain your family will never be bored.

Read on to discover a few cruise ships to please grandma, mummy, and little ones!

• For climbing walls, the FlowRider surf simulator, white-knuckle zip wires, and an incredible observation pod, try setting sail on a Royal Caribbean ship.

• For a waterpark with thrilling rides and play pools, try Carnival Cruises. You'll also come across Dr. Seuss and friends on a Carnical Cruises ship, too!

• For a fascinating enrichment programme for adults, as well an extensive activity programme for children, try Crystal Cruises

• Searching for a no-y cruise from the UK? Try setting sail from Southampton, England, with P&O Cruises

• For activities to delight teens - Xbox stations and the iTake video project, to name a few - try Celebrity Cruises®

• If you're hoping for a babysitting service to give the adults a little time together in the evening, P&O Cruises oer a complimentary night nursery for a range of ages, while Cunard give parents a pager so that they can be contacted while their little ones are in the night nursery.

If you’ve never set sail on a cruise ship before, you might be surprised by what you’ll nd. Imagining tiny rooms? Lukewarm dinner? Nothing to do? Instead, picture immaculate staterooms with balconies so you can feel the sea breeze. Fine-dining to rival on-shore restaurants. And thrilling entertainment from Broadway shows to language lessons to climbing walls.

Cruise holidays aren’t all organised fun and non-stop entertainment though, sometimes it’s the scenery that makes a cruise so special. The simple pleasure of watching the world go by as you drift along a river with drink in hand. The excitement of spotting an unknown shore come into view for the rst time. These can be what cruise dreams are made of.

With so many worldwide destinations to choose from, we’ve put together some of the most spectacular sights you can see on a cruise to inspire your next choice...

Tempted to set sail and see one of these incredible destinations? Get in touch with your Travel Counsellor to nd out more!

Scenic Cruises

The Norwegian Fjords

Travel to the land of the midnight sun and the northern lights to see the breathtaking beauty of Norway’s ords.

Carved by glaciers, these deep sea lakes are surrounded by steep, snow-capped mountains, tumbling waterfalls and tiny shing villages.

Amongst the dramatic scenery, the waters of the ords are beautifully still and calm, broken only by the splashes of seals and whales.

Antarctica

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, a cruise to the far-ung icy lands of Antarctica could be the trip you’re looking for.

From the boundless snowy landscape to the loveable resident penguins, Antarctic voyages are rare and unforgettable.

Yet the experience is no longer purely the domain of intrepid explorers, with some amazing niche cruises on oer for passengers with a sense of adventure.

Angkor Wat

Cruise along the Mekong River to see one of south-east Asia’s most famous temples, Angkor Wat in Cambodia.

The UNESCO World Heritage site is the largest religious monument in the world, as well as an important archaeological site.

Built to represent the entire universe, Angkor Wat’s ve towers, vast moat and intricate stone carvings are truly spectacular.

The Eiel Tower

Few sights are more well-loved around the globe than the beautiful Eiel Tower in Paris.

Situated on the banks of the River Seine, this famous landmark reaches the dizzy heights of 1,063 feet.

A cruise along the Seine must be one of life’s most romantic treats, taking in the bohemian charm of Paris before exploring the surrounding regions, with sights like Monet’s Giverny home, the picturesque streets of Rouen, and the palaces of Versailles to look forward to.

Chile

Journey to the ends of the earth with a small ship cruise around the tip of South America.

Chile’s Patagonia region is home to some of the world’s most dramatic scenery, with jagged mountain peaks, remote valleys and herds of llamas.

The freezing glacial lakes and ords are perfect for exploring in a small vessel, allowing you to get up close with the staggering, other-worldly beautyof this wilderness.

The Amazon

We’ve all conjured up scenes of the Amazon in our minds but immersing yourself in the sights, sounds and smells of this mighty jungle river is a completely dierent experience!

The cries of the howler monkeys, the intensely bright ashes of colour as birds and butteries y past, and the heady humidity of the rainforest all combine to create an exhilarating river cruise experience.

Celebrity Cruises10-night trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras

Combine a passion for sailing with your special interests by signing up for a themed cruise, where you can indulge in bespoke experiences, while discovering a like-minded community of friends.

Intro to themed cruises

On these cruises you can enjoy facilities and itineraries themed around interests and hobbies, ranging from wine to music and TV shows to sports. Onboard, indulge in your passion with everything from exhibits, guided excursions and hand-on activities, to concerts, lessons and even meet-and-greets with celebrities. Go on a themed cruise and you’ll meet people who are just as passionate about your interest as you, while learning more about your favourite subject.

Finding your cruise

There’s a few issues to consider before signing up to a themed cruise. Look at whether it’s a full-ship themed cruise or a partial charter – meaning you’ll be sailing with other passengers who don’t share your interests. It’s a good idea to determine whether the activities, itineraries and excursions on the themed cruise are right for you. This is where arranging your trip with a Travel Counsellor can put you at a real advantage, as they can do this research and match you to the ideal themed cruise.

Adventures in 2018

There are some truly unique themed cruises in 2018. Norwegian Cruise Line are putting on a Star Trek Caribbean themed cruise early in the year, where guests can enjoy activities like costume parties with franchise star George Takei while sailing on the Norwegian Jade. Carnival are hosting a ‘Glory on the Glory’ cruise

in 2018, giving people the chance to go on unique spiritual adventures with guided meditations, astrology classes, tarot card reading and sessions with psychics.

Cruise line offerings

Some cruise lines offer a range of themed itineraries, such as Cunard. Next year, their special-interest programmes include ‘Cartoonists at Sea’, where guests can attend drawing workshops and meet experts like Matt Diffee and Emily Flake on the Queen Mary 2. Next November, the same ship will host a genealogy-centred cruise, where people can uncover their family past with the help of specialists. One of the most popular is P&O’s Strictly Come Dancing cruise, which is held on various ships annually and allows the show’s fans to learn new moves and dine with professional dancers.

River experiences

Themed cruises are available both at sea and by river. Throughout 2018, you can embark on Viking’s ‘Chateau, Rivers & Wine’ cruise, sailing down the idyllic Garonne River. Visit iconic wine-making destinations such as Bordeaux where you can view vineyards and sample standout vintages.

Get into the spirit

You can even take a cruise to a special event. Celebrity are hosting a 10-night trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras in 2018, allowing you to get into the party spirit with like-minded revellers onboard the Celebrity Reflection. For a short-haul trip, journey from Nice to Monte Carlo via Saint Tropez and attend the iconic Monaco Grand Prix with Azamara next May. Relax on the golden beaches of St Tropez and then attend the race with a community of F1 fans for a unique experience!

Embark on a real adventure with a themed cruise

“I’ve always believed you have to get as much out of your holiday as possible. Me and my wife booked a cruise of the Western Mediterranean. We’ve always wanted to spend some time in Venice so we decided to book a hotel there for a few nights after our cruise, and we’re so glad we did.

“We had so much fun on our cruise, enjoying first-rate dining options, excellent amenities and even better company, and our mini-break in Venice was the icing on the cake. We got to see fantastic architecture, like gothic cathedrals, as well as soak up the sun on lovely beaches and enjoy traditional cultural experiences. It was an absolute delight, and we’d suggest tailoring your cruise itinerary for a more unique holiday to anyone, because it really gives you the kind of getaway that you’ve always wanted”.

Barcelona - Great for Accessible Travel

Cruising can be rewarding, as it allows you to take in some of the world’s most fascinating destinations while sailing the seven seas. These holidays are open to everyone, and there is a thriving market for accessible cruising, giving you the chance to create the getaway of a lifetime.

Catering to you

Cruise lines are now designing their ships with you in mind, adapting vessels to ensure you enjoy a comfortable cruising experience. Many cruise lines include accessible staterooms on their vessels as standard, like Holland America Line. They offer ‘modified accessible staterooms’ which have ‘shower-only’ bathrooms with low thresholds and ‘wheelchair-accessible staterooms’, that come with wide entry doors and roll-in showers with benches to promote movability and comfort.

Issues to consider

It takes forward planning to prepare for an accessible cruise. Cruise lines only have a certain number of accessible staterooms per ship, and often require advanced notice to ensure they can meet your needs, so it’s a good idea to book as early as possible. Here is where having a Travel Counsellor gives you an advantage. A select number of Travel Counsellors have extensive knowledge of the cruising industry and have strong relationships with cruise lines, so they can find the right ship for you.

All about inclusion

A range of cruise lines have accessible travel policies, informing you what to expect when sailing with them, displayed on their websites. P&O’s policy is extensive.

Their accessible cabins come with wide doors, enough floorspace to promote wheelchair/mobility scooter movement, wet room-style bathrooms with shower and toilet grab-rails and pull-down shower seats, while balconies have ramped access. On many P&O ships, most public areas have level/ramped access, some swimming areas come with pool hoists, and some mobility equipment like wheelchairs can be hired.

Best in class

Some ships go above and beyond to cater to accessible travellers. Royal Caribbean’s ‘Freedom-class’ ships are ideal, with 32 accessible cabins and two suites, pool and whirlpool lifts, sign-language interpreters and aids for the vision and hearing impaired. Holland America Line’s ‘Vista-class’ ships are also suitable, as they have 28 accessible cabins. Additional equipment like elevated toilet seats are available, while these ships have ‘Window-Eyes’ software, allowing the visually impaired to immerse themselves in their destinations.

Available destinations

When you dock in port, you need to be able to make your way around easily. Some cities are more accessible than others, determining whether you’ll be able to go onshore. One of the top short-haul destinations is Barcelona, which boasts fully accessible eateries like bakery Demeritas. For a long-haul destination look to Singapore, which hosts a newly-built shopping centre specifically for wheelchair users. Also keep in mind that the ‘tendering’ process, where you disembark for excursions, can be challenging. Many cruise lines have policies which make it easier for you to go on excursions, for instance on most Princess Cruises vessels there are mechanised gangways which facilitate a smooth tendering process.

Accessible Cruising for the holiday of a lifetime
