To each his swing...Rhythm is an essential element of swing. While some are looking to‘explode’ the ball with a highly dynamic body action others operateon more flowing motion, swinging the golf club rather than hittingthe ball. One of the beauties of this game is that there are manyways of playing it – as individuals we must learn to identify with ourown natural rhythm, or tempo. At the heart of the system I teach isthe mandate that the best solution is to swing the club the same wayas you walk (as discussed in part 1 last issue). Look at Fred Couplesand Ernie Els: they walk with a lazy, unhurried style and swing justthe same way. Thi is their natural gait. Someone like Alvaro Quiroswalks much more quickly – and his swingreflects that. Same is true of young Italianstar Matteo Manassero, another who swingswith an up-tempo beat.

One of the reasons for inconsistency amongamateurs is that their swing speed is liable tochange from one day to another – even onehole to another! The first thing I suggest toall of my pupils at my academy in Paris isthat they try and train a natural tempo tomatch up with the way in which they walk.And you must do the same.

What type of walker are you?To establish this natural tempo you first haveto identify what kind of walker you are. Notwo individuals walk exactly the same way –so no two swings are the same! There are twodistinct types of walking style: there arethose who start by the upper body and the others who starts fromfeet. You have to identify your preference. Talk to your teaching Pro,find out where your true motion originates. That will provide you withthe key to developing your Natural Golf Swing. If you are someonewho initiates motion with the feet, my advice is to start your swingwith your feet and let your top half respond to their movement; if youare upper body dominant, you are going to be better off starting yourgolf swing with the hips and shoulders – your lower body will adjust toits own pace. In both cases your arms should react to body motion andthe overall tempo should reflect your walking rhythm.

For your information, both Philip Golding and I are top half walk-ers, so our foot and leg action responds to the motion of our upperbody. To facilitate this we allow our feet to move freely as required –we are not rooted to the ground!

Appreciate Triangulaid’s 3 PhasesTHE ‘SPORT’, THE ‘GAME’, THE ‘BUSINESS’The Triangulaid teaching philosophy was pioneered by Welshman BillOwens in 1991 and is aimed predominantly at helping higher handicapplayers to learn a more natural golf swing. Owens broke the challengeinto three distinct areas: the ‘Sport’ (long irons, hybrids and woods),

the ‘Game’ (5-iron to Pitching Wedge) andthe ‘Business’ (all aspects of the shortgame). And it was Owen’s assertion that atruly natural golf swing is only possible for afull swing using between a 5-iron andwedge – Triangulaid’s favourite area thatOwens called ‘The Game’. A golfer requiresno exceptional physical force to carry theball through the air with these clubs – theemphasis is on making a natural swing,encouraging the true kinetic chain ofmotion to unfold with special attention paidto the finish. This is where the Triangle yousee here really helps a higher-handicapplayer – as I will explain fully over thecourse of this article.

‘The Sport’ element of the game – thelonger irons, hybrids and woods – cannot bemade with the same 100% natural swing. Itis a more physically demanding area of the

game, the emphasis here being on the way you adjust your addressposition in order to make the longer swing that controls these clubs. Iwill cover those adjustments in a future issue, along with Triangulaidconcepts surrounding the ‘Business’, the organisation, focus and disci-pline required in the short game. This is where tour players win tour-naments and amateurs can drastically improve their score.

For the time being, however, I want to focus on the unique teach-ing concept of Triangulaid, designed specifically to help the amateurappreciate – and feel – the correct inside path back to the ball keeptheir Natural Golf Swing on the course.

To make full use of the power of yourclub you must create a series of move-ments that enable you to transfer theenergy of your body down through theshaft and into the clubhead. The gripholds the key: the more your grip is tech-nically perfect the more your swing willbe natural and your ball-flight consistentand accurate. Based on Triangulaid phi-losophy, here are seven steps to followfor a good grip (oh, and my advice untilyou get to step 7 is to check the positionof the clubface, not your hands!)

1. To make your grip, hold the club upat a 45-degree angle, as you see here.Place it in front of your eyes, the lead-ing edge of the club vertical

2. From 5-iron to PW, the angle formedat the back of the left hand (right handfor lefties) should reflect the angle of theclubface. In other words, the left handposition is seen to change gradually from5-iron to PW as the loft increases

3. The position of the left thumb andindex finger match on the grip – theyare the same height. Neither protrudesbeyond the other. Note that the leftthumb is placed fractionally to the rightside of the handle (as you see it)

4. Balance the club between the hookedleft index finger and the heel pad at theback of the left hand (inset right); the gripshould not run through thelifeline in the middle of thehand (except in putting!)

5. In bringing the right hand tojoin the left, take the club in the 2nd fin-ger of the hand as it curls under the shaftand hide the left thumb beneath thefleshy pad at the base of the right thumb

6. Check that your right thumb/indexfinger forms a V that points in thedirection of the chin (not the shoul-der). The two fingers are not touching,they grip the club!

7. Make sure the leading edge of theclubface is always vertical. You canwatch your hands. Make sure that thesix previous steps have been met. Ifnot, try again!

Checkpoints to follow...As you see in these comparative examplesof a 5-iron and a PW at the top of thepage opposite, the position of the lefthand is very different. A pitching wedgehas a loft of around 47 degrees, while a5-iron is around 27 degrees, and this isreflected in the position of the lefthand/wrist. With the PW, the angle of theleft hand is very strong, with at leastthree (even four) knuckles visible; in thecase of the 5 iron, there is less angle withthe left hand, and perhaps two and a halfknuckles visible. You may find that it’s easier at first to makeyour grip with your hand down the shaftnearer to the clubhead. This will help youto view the angle of the face and match itwith the back of your left hand (as you seeillustrated here).

Also, once you have completed your grip,think about the so-called ‘trigger’ positionof the right thumb and forefinger – just as ifyou were pulling the trigger on a gun!

Let me stress, these adjustments to theleft hand grip apply in what is referred toin Triangulaid terms as ‘The Game’, shotsfrom 5-iron to PW that are not reliant onphysical force. When it comes to ‘TheSport’ – i.e. the long game shots from 4-iron to driver – the grip should be consis-tent and the recommendation is that youuse the same left hand position as you dofor the 7-iron, a strong position with threeknuckles visible on the back of the hand.

Does adjusting the left hand gripseem strange? Not to Monty!In 2000 I was fortunate to attend a clinicwith Colin Montgomerie during the FrenchOpen in Paris. Thanks to my familiaritywith Triangulaid methods I detected thatMonty adjusted his left hand grip alongthe lines I have just explained – i.e. heappeared to strengthen his grip progres-sively with each drop in loft, workingdown through the irons. I was bold enoughto ask him about this aspect of his gripand pointed out that he made this adjust-ment between the 5 iron and PW – ‘Howdo you know that?’ he asked me, clearlytaken aback that I had made this observa-tion. I explained to Monty that I was a stu-dent of Bill Owens’ Triangulaid methodand that making the grip in this fashionwas a key element of it.

Shortly after our meeting, Monty and Billhad a discussion about the grip, sharingtheir views on the merits of this system. Itjust goes to show that the ‘textbook’ way ofdoing things we are taught to follow doesnot always reflect the practicality of thenatural game. You have to keep your mindopen to new ideas!

Check that the ‘V’ on the right hand runs up towardyour chin, not the right shoulder.Note: the adjustments to the position of the left hand that I amreferring to on this spread are designed for ‘the Game’, i.e. theapproach shots to the green from a 5-iron to PW. On all longerclubs, from the 4-iron to the driver – the ‘Sport’ – the recom-mendation is that you use the same grip as that for the 7-iron,with three knuckles showing on the back of the left hand. If the grip is correct, the natural shape of shot willbe right to left – i.e. a draw – for right-handed play-ers (and vice versa). My intention now is to sharewith you the principle of the method Triangulaid inorder that you understand the ideas behind the sys-tem of lines in the triangle and the way it works.

First step: understanding the ‘natural effect’ - the drawIn order to propel a ball a long way and in theright direction the golf ball has to spin in a cer-tain manner. Suffice to say the ball is designed insuch a way that when it is struck correctly thereis a spin profile that optimises its flight and tra-jectory. To all intents and purposes a perfectlystraight ball flight does not exist – no tour playerwill tell you he visualises a dead-straight flight.He practises to control a natural shape, a ‘stockshot’ that he can trust on the course.

By wrapping his boot around the ball andreleasing his energy in a specific fashion, thefootballer curls the shot from right-to-left. That’sa natural motion for a right-footed player...andthe same principle is true in golf. The clubheadwill tend to open up during the backswing and toclose in the downswing, the clubface turningover the ball and creating that right-to-left spin.

Second step: parallel lines don’t exist!(The brain understands parallel, but the eyes converge)It seems logical, then, to think that a right-handed golfer should have a right-to-left ballflight. And yet, for the higher handicap player, byfar the biggest problem in golf is the left-to-rightflight – i.e. they slice the ball.

Why is this? Because of the consequence ofparallel lines and the effect those lines have onyour brain and your swing.

No one would argue with the fact that ‘text-book’ alignment sees the feet, hips and shoulders

Here I am clearly exaggerating everything – and this is awonderful way to first experience Triangulaid for the higherhandicap player. The key is to play with gravity. Opening thetriangle to around 40 degrees provides a wide margin forerror, the feet and lower body open to the target line whilethe shoulders are square to it. The arms are encouraged tohang freely and they then follow the body motion, swingingfrom inside to outside. The weight of the clubhead feels soheavy in my hands that I have the sensation it is the lastthing to move as I initiate the motion. This creates a ‘lag’ inthe backswing which can be seen to increase during thedownswing. For the time being it doesn’t matter that theclubshaft crosses the target line at the top – let it swingfreely. (Look for the shaft orientation to be parallel to the redpath – this is a good benchmark for a beginner.) During thetransition I focus on turning my hips along the white path(the lower body line to the left of target), while my shouldersand arms follow the red path. The key is that I unwind in thetrue kinematic sequence, from the ground up. The ball willfly with right-to-left draw and land between the triangle lines.

Opening upthe Triangleis the secret to helpthe beginner gainsome confidence with his swing. Thekey is that while thefeet and hips arepositioned on a linethat is open to thetarget (the inner rail),the shoulders aresquare to the targetline (thin rail); thered side of the triangle representsthe path of the clubhead in thedownswing.

parallel to the target line for a full swing. Pros spenda lot of time fine-tuning these details – and they havethe skill and athleticism to accommodate ‘square’alignment and rotate their body at speed to ‘get outof their own way’ and create the room to return theclubface along the desired inside path.

For most amateurs this remains a problem. Thevast majority of club players do not have this athleticability to rotate and get out of their own way forimpact. What’s more, while the brain understandsthat parallel alignment means aiming the body left ofthe target, the eyes converge and play tricks on themind. The result is that the vast majority of golfersare mis-aligned at the set-up, typically aiming theirbody to the right of target.

It is this mis-alignment that deceives the brain andcauses so many problems with the golf swing. I see somany amateurs who display a tendency to swing fromout-to-in (the classic slicing action) and this is largelyattributable to the fact that, while they believe theyare correctly aimed, they are in fact aiming to theright and trying to make amends with a swing that issubconciously trying to pull the ball back to the target –compensations that can never be consistent.

Triangular lines: a logical alternative that helpsyou to play within a margin of errorTriangulaid was developed specifically to help higher-handicap golfers eliminate thoughts of the target andoffers a simple solution. Using the lines to offset youralignment, you effectively preset a good lower bodyaction in the downswing and thus enjoy the true kine-matic sequence (i.e. unwinding from the ground up)as you unwind and release the club through the ball.

Remember, the arms react to the movement of thefeet (the natural walking motion I talked about). Theinner line represents the alignment of the lower bodyat the set-up (the shoulders square to the target), andthe red line pointing to the right represents the path ofthe clubhead (running inside the target line). Thebeauty of the Triangle is that the angle can be adjustedto define the margin for error you need, depending onyour level. As long as your grip is correct, you will fallin the space predetermined by your Triangle.

These images reveal perfectly theway in which using the triangleenables a golfer to experienceswinging the club on the insidepath approaching the ball. Aligningthe feet and hips open to the targetline gives the body a head start onthe way back to the ball – and thusclears the way for the arms to fallinto this hitting position

Feel the clubheadwrap over the ball asyou release the clubthrough impact. Themomentum of theswing will take youto a full finish – andremember to holdthe position for 7seconds!

You will notice here that Philiphas narrowed the Triangle considerably, to reflect the margin for error we wouldexpect of a better player. I am adjusting his shoulderalignment, making sure they are square with his target line,which they must be at the set-up.

The tendency is to aim the bodyto the right of the target, even fora tour player. So the key here is toaim the lower body fractionallyleft to compensate and thenexaggerate the feeling. The linesgive you a benchmark, shouldersto the target line, feet to the left ofit, to prepare for the true kinematic sequence.

Note also that as the better player closes the Triangle, so the ball position moves forward and the tilt of the shaft is reduced

On the previous pages I have demonstrated the‘large’ setting of the Triangle that would be suit-able for beginners; here, with Philip’s help, weare looking at a smaller, ‘closed’ Triangle that isapplied to the expert. Somewhere between thetwo extremes lies your position of truth!

In my Academies in France, I help a beginnerby introducing the large triangle – the widestmargin for error – and gradually decrease it aswe progress. The goal is to be free from psycho-logical coercion and to maintain a natural swing-ing motion (which is why thinking about parallellines is not going to help!).

The key to accelerated learning?Make it EASY and NATURALIf you find yourself intrigued by the Triangulaidmethod, search youtube.com for clips of meteaching in Paris – the rate at which total begin-ners learn to hit good golfshots is quite incredi-ble, and that’s a testament to the concept BillOwens devised over 20 years ago.

Of course, you can create your own triangleusing three clubs laid on the ground. A higherhandicap golfer would set the lines as much as45 degrees open in relation to one another, asyou saw me demonstrating on the previouspages, opening up the lower body while encour-aging the arms to swing on a severely insidepath. The relative alignment of the lower bodyto the shoulders gives you a headstart in thedownswing and enables you to clear the lowerbody out of the way in readiness for impact.

Clearly, a talented player doesn’t need so

much of a headstart. Tour player Philip Golding –a former French Open champion – would narrowthe triangle almost to nothing (although, as yousee here, he enjoys practising with the Triangleset with a small angle to encourage the correctmotion through the transition and also to raisehis awareness of the inside path to impact).

It also helps him to have a better set-up. Inthe years we have been working together wehave noticed a tendency for him to set up to theball with his hips and shoulders slightly closed inrelation to the target. The small Triangle giveshim good benchmark to align his body correctlyand also eliminate thinking too much about thetarget by playing within a (small) margin of error.

Create motion with true kinematic sequenceAbove all, practising in this fashion helps him torespect the true kinematic sequence, unwindingfrom the ground up – feet, knees, hips, shoul-ders, arms and finally clubhead.

Gradually, as the quality of a player’s swingimproves, we would expect the angle of the tri-angle to narrow to reflect the fact that the bodyis winding and unwinding much more effectivelyand the ball striking is more consistent. But ofcourse, in doing this, we are lessening the mar-gin for error. Your challenge is to go out and dis-cover your own ‘level’, and set the Triangle tothe angle that suits your skills.

I am sure you can begin to appreciate that it ismore difficult (and technical) to play with asmall margin of error... most golfers don’t havethe time to make this a realistic goal.

Do you turn and swing or simply move your arms? A poor lower body actioncan make the difference between a good swing and a poor arm move-ment, as this drill demonstrates. Stand up straight (like Phil) or take you 5-iron posture (like me). From there, stretch your right arm horizontally andthen try to touch the palms of your hands together.

Unless you are extremely supple, this is simply not possible without raisingthe left heel and encouraging good movement in the lower body. You needthat hip rotation to turn fully onto a well-supported right side. Same in thefollow-through; if you want to turn and shift your weight correctly, it isimportant that you mobilise the hips, knees and feet. Try it this weekend.

Finally, let me leave you with a great drillfor natural motion – hitting balls with yourshoes and socks off. Get in tune with yournatural swing rhythm as you feel the groundthrough your feet.

I’m fascinated to see how many tour playersare now wearing soft shoes – Fred Couples,Ernie, Tiger Woods, Justin Rose. The key isthat these shoes promise exceptional feelthrough the feet and into the ground – which iswhat you want for a Natural Golf Swing.
