What We Know:• Charles and Sho saw volcanoes during their adventure in Japan.

• Volcanoes sometimes erupt, releasing ash and lava.

NEED

Activityscience pageSummer Adventure

TEACHER NOTE: This activity is often compared to a volcano. If appropriate for your students, explain that while this may look like a volcanic eruption, the two eruptions are caused by different forces. This eruption is a chemical reaction between the two substances whereas a volcanic eruption is caused by shifting motions in layers of rock under the ground called “tectonic plates.” Otherwise, you can explain that both this eruption and volcanic eruptions are caused by forces we cannot control. When vinegar and baking soda are combined, they erupt without our help, just like volcanoes erupt due to natural causes. You may want to have paper towels ready -- this activity can get messy! Also, make sure you are using baking soda, not baking powder.

3 T baking soda 1/2 C vinegar

empty 20 oz soda bottle cookie sheet with sides funnel

• Volcanic eruptions are big and can be dangerous.

• Volcanoes are located all over the world.

53© 2013 n2yAugust 26, 2013

What We Can Do:

• We can make our own small eruption using household items.

• Baking soda and vinegar react when mixed together.

Activity Steps

1. Put bottle on cookie sheet.

2. Put funnel in bottle.

3. Put baking soda in bottle, using funnel.

54© 2013 n2yAugust 26, 2013

6. Observe reaction.

Activity Steps

4. Pour vinegar in bottle.

5. Remove funnel quickly.

What I Learned

1. What did the baking soda look like?

2. What did the vinegar look like?

3. What happened when you mixed vinegar and baking soda?
