ROOM 114 – CLASS NEWSWHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?
This week in math we started Unit 3
which focuses on addition and subtraction of
whole numbers and decimals. We reviewedplace value and focused on tenths, hundredths,
and thousandths. Students also worked on
converting fractions to decimals.
We also presented projects and
reflected on our IB Planner, titled The Human
Machine. Students did a great job presenting
their projects to the class. They also reflected on
everything we have learned and chose
something to include in their portfolios. We will
be starting our next Unit of Inquiry, Civil Struggles, next week.
Our spelling list focused on words with
double letters and the /aw/ sound. Students
started Tic Tac Toe spelling, where they choose
how they want to practice their spelling words.
We also worked on writing a friendly letter and
addressing an envelope in the Great Mail Race.
We also were lucky to have had two art
lessons this week. Kathy Berlin (mom of a fifth
grader) did a lesson on pointillism and Kyle(White Bear Lake Center for the Arts) did a
watercolor lesson. Students also watched a
performance by the Windy City Players with
their first grade buddies.
We also had our fall fun celebration.
Many students participated and wore orange
and black. We had a wonderful time! Have a
great weekend!

THE GREAT MAIL RACELast week our fifth grade team
received a letter from a fifth grade
class in Utah inviting us to
participate in the Great Mail Race.
This is a way for us to write letters to
fifth graders in every state, and to
receive letters back from around thecountry! We are excited about this
project. Each student wrote a letter
this week and will be sending it to
two different states across the U.S.
We look forward to hearing back
from other fifth graders and tracking
our letters on a map of the U.S.!
TRICK OR CANThe canned food drive has been
extended until November 5.We are almost halfway to our
goal of 50 cans!!
