Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. At this stage your septic system is a serious health hazard to you and your children. Human waste produces faecal coliform bacteria, a source of viral and bacterial gastroenteritis as well as Hepatitis A and other diseases. Hepatitis can be a debilitating condition and cause long-term harm to children.

There are only three remedies. One: stop using the septic system until it recovers. This can take over a month and is not normally practical. Two: excavate your septic system and relocate it. This is very costly and time consuming, sometimes requiring new resource consents and different systems. Three: treat your septic system with Septi-Cure™ every six months.

Septi-Cure is Cost effective. By far the most cost effective solution is to pour one litre of Septi-Cure™ down each toilet bowl every six months. This simple action will help keep your system working at top efficiency by reducing solids and scum. Instead of emptying your tank frequently, the reduction in solids and scum saves you expensive pump out costs. Your irrigation field and leach lines will become clear of slimes and blockages so nature can handle the gradual seepage and evaporation for you. When this is happening your system will be operating effectively and not endangering you or your family’s health.

What is Septi-Cure™ Septi-Cure™ is a concentrated mixture of selected naturally occurring microorganisms. These harmless tiny organisms live and multiply by feeding on waste material. When introduced to your septic tank system, they go to work straight away digesting waste material, reducing solids and scum, allowing your septic system to start operating to its maximum efficiency. As they progress

through to your irrigation field they feed on the slimes that prevent seepage and evaporation. When seepage and evaporation return to normal, you have reduced the risk of contaminating groundwater and the environment as well as reducing the chances of infection for you and your family. Eventually, they get washed out of the system and have to be replaced to continue their work. This is why you introduce Septi-Cure™ to your septic system every six months for maximum efficiency.

Last year two women were killed in farming quad bike accidents. A 62 year old woman was killed on her property in Kaikohe, while a young farm worker was killed near Westport.

Over the past eight years seven women have lost their lives in quad accidents on farms and every year, on average, five farmers are killed and 850 are injured. The accidents incur an ACC bill of around $7 million a year, and leave a legacy of loss, debilitation and pain.

The Dairy Women’s Network is working with the Department

of Labour to increase the quad skills levels of dairy farming women.

This month (November) the organisation is using its popular Dairy Days as a way to get the message out about safer riding.

“More women than ever are involved in the dairy industry, often as heavily as their male counterparts and the impact that death and injury has on rural families and businesses is simply too great to ignore,” says Dairy Women’s Network chief executive Sarah Speight.

Women attending any of the Dairy Days held nationwide November 8 — 30 will have the opportunity to improve quad riding knowledge.

“They will leave with more knowledge on the key principles of quad bike operation, along with information on quad regulations to pass on to staff back at the farm,” said Ms Speight.

“The impact of a death or injury on a farm from a quad bike is personal, social and economic. Anything that helps reduce these effects has to be good for the farm, and for the industry,” she said.

Ag ITO advisor Graeme Couper is one of the 10 instructors who will be providing hands-on tips to improve quad bike riding skills.

He believes women are often more open to improving their skill set, and play a vital role in passing those skills on to other staff.

“They may not be riding as frequently, (as the men) but when they do, they may be in challenging situations, such as towing calf milk — which can challenge your skills and the quad’s ability.

“We also hope to highlight the need

Quad bike accidents — the biggest cause of on-farm injuries and deaths in New Zealand — are not solely a male domain.

for good, ongoing quad maintenance programmes,” he said.

The Department of Labour is one year into an initiative aimed at reducing the level of accidents on quad bikes, and the campaign comes with four key messages — always wear a helmet, keep children off quads, train staff correctly and use the right machine for the job.

It aims to reduce quad bike accidents by 30% by 2013.

Department head of harm reduction Francois Barton said working with the Dairy Women’s Network reflected the valuable role women can play in improving quad bike safety on their own farms.

“We know they are often the influencers on the farm and we believe they can help reduce death and injury by the way they ride quad bikes,” he said.

The department intends to have some of the inspectors from its team present at the Dairy Days, providing information on the quad bike safety campaign and the seasonal farm inspection currently underway.

Inspectors will be explaining the outcomes of these visits, which can include a range of enforcement options from written warnings, improvement notices and prosecution.

Dairy Days will be held in Taranaki on November 15 at Coopers Farm, 24 Oru Rd, Stratford 10am-2pm. Pre registration is vital.

In Hamilton on November 8, at the Mtsyery Creek event Centre and on November 9 at 765 Forest Road, Reporoa — 10am-2pm for both days. Pre-rigistration is vital

A cancer victim’s generous bequest will benefit many children and teens in the Waikato and Coromandel districts.

When Chica Gilmer died in August 2009 after a short battle with cancer she left a generous $10,000 bequest to Rural Women New Zealand to be used as the organisation saw fit.

Chica had been a long time member of the Rukuhia branch of RWNZ and the rural community and children were the passions in Chica’s life.

When RWNZ learned Rainbow Place — an arm of Hospice Waikato which supports children and young people coping with serious illness was struggling to service the large region due to a shortage of transport, they decided a new vehicle would be the perfect way to use the bequest.

An additional vehicle will make it easier for Rainbow Place’s three therapists and two nurses to meet the

by Annette Lambly-Robinsongrowing demand for counselling and children’s nursing services. The lack of transport had lead to long waits for families, particularly in rural areas.

Rainbow Place therapists and nurses travel around 2,500 kilometres a month, mainly to families in remote areas, or those unable to travel to Hamilton.

“When things are tough for families, lives are complicated enough without having to travel big distances to get support,’’ said Rainbow Place manager and children’s nurse, Penny Parsons.

The team supports both children who have a serious illness and those who need support for grief and loss due to the illness or death of a family member.

“Chica was an educator and had been the deputy principal at Tauranga Girls College. We decided a project to

continue Chica’s work would be ideal,’’ said branch member Janet Williams.

Jim Wright of Nissan in Hamilton came up with a good deal on a new Nissan Micra and the Rukuhia branch, with support from other Rural Women New Zealand groups in the Waikato, Waipa, Bay of Plenty and Coromandel raised the balance of the funds needed.

The car was presented to Rainbow Place on Saturday October 15.

As we waited in the car park, the excitement and anticipation was palpable,” says Ms Parsons.

“I can’t tell you what it’s going to mean to us. Our case load has increased substantially as people have got to know about Rainbow Place,’’ said Ms Parsons. “We are so grateful — it (the car) enables us to carry on doing work with children and families going through ‘tough stuff’.”

With gas supplies returning to normal last week Waikato farmers have been praised for their efforts in limiting the amount of milk seeping into the region’s waterways while the Maui gas pipeline was out of action.

Waikato regional council’s compliance and education manager Rob Dragten confirmed the council received only four reports of milk entering waterways.

Given the region have more than 4000 dairy farmers to have only four incidents was a tremendous effort by all concerned.

With Fonterra’s milk processing capacity drastically reduced by the Maui gas week-long outage which began on October 24, farmers in the northern half of the North Island initially had to dump 35 million litres of milk a day.

Dumped milk getting into waterways is extremely toxic, stripping oxygen from the water and killing aquatic life.

Farmers praised for vigilance

Matamata’s Frans and Tineke de Jong reckon it

was the intriguing taste of feijoas that brought them to New Zealand from the Netherlands in 2003.

They also admit the lure of rural life in a less crowded country is a dream come true, the feijoas just cap it off.

Although it is still early days, the couple believes there is plenty of potential for the fruit, especially overseas. Almost all of their friends and family who have visited from Europe love the taste of feijoa and the products Tineke has prepared using the fruit.

The couple own Southern Belle Orchard, a five-hectare property on

Hinuera Rd, not far from where ‘The Hobbit’ movies are being made.

The de Jongs grow capsicums, chillies, and cucumbers in a high tech greenhouse. Three hectares of the property has been planted with 2,500 feijoa trees.

Love them or hate them, anyone who has ever eaten a feijoa usually agrees the taste and smell is very unique.

SWIMMINg POOL PURIFIER

Having a FLOATRON in their own pool for over 16 years has made a world of difference to family life for company owners, Craig & Melissa. They have a passion for this product because they have a 6-year-old daughter with eczema and allergies. She is unable to swim in chemical-laden pools, but they are thrilled that she can swim in their pool all day long, with no skin or health issues at all.

The FLOATRON is a revolutionary solar powered water purifier for swimming pools, which replaces the need for chemicals by up to 90%. It uses the process of ionisation to combat algae and bacteria in the water.

People are amazed to find a product that can save them so much time and money on their pools. One statement made by many people in NZ is that they simply don’t have the time to look after their pool, and they are so glad to finally come across the FLOATRON.

With a FLOATRON you swim in crystal clear water, with no taste, smell, or chemical effects (that means no dry skin, or red stinging eyes). You save so much time on pool maintenance, because you don’t have to add excessive chemicals, or frequently test the water. And, you save money too, because chemical usage can be cut by an amazing 90%.

Most of the produce finds its way to restaurants, speciality shops and supermarkets, but the de Jongs also enjoy their Sunday morning trips to the Hamilton Farmers Market. The family-like atmosphere makes it a great place to catch up with other growers and regular customers. It is also a very good place to test new produce lines.

In Holland Frans had worked for 27 years in an agricultural laboratory and the last seven years in his own laboratory that he and a colleague had established. He is proud of its success.

However having grown up on a dairy farm, his love of farming was strong, so the desire for a more ‘hands on’ farming lifestyle always beckoned.

Tineke has a background in floristry and is also a keen gardener, making owning a lifestyle block an ideology they both shared. It was these backgrounds, and the love of the land, that gave them the drive to embrace and develop biological farming practices on their property.

Over the years, the couple has made significant changes to the property, including dedicating themselves to sustainable and biological growing methods.

The de Jongs’ soil and leaf test in the orchard every year, and nutrient water test in the greenhouse once a month to ensure they have a good nutrient balance for growing.

“Our philosophy is simple — a healthy plant stays healthy and productive if it is looked after well and fed all the nutrients and micro elements nature provides naturally through soil biology,” says Frans.

Every August, a selection of green

house capsicum varieties are planted. The 1,500-square metre greenhouse is a high tech operation with three computers working together to control, temperature, humidity, nutrient concentration and irrigation sequence.

Daily checks of the technical features of the greenhouse are performed to obtain optimal growth and fruit development. The irrigation is a total recycle system, so not one drop of fertiliser and water is wasted nor will the greenhouse pollute any nutrients in the soil and aquifers.

Greenhouse harvesting usually starts late October each year and ends late June. In a season they will have picked

between 36–40 tonne of capsicums — and then of course there is the chillies, and the cucumbers.

Four years ago they trialled ten ‘sweet point’ capsicum plants. It soon became a winner at the farmers markets, so this season they have planted over 600 plants. The ‘giant chilli’ shaped capsicum is not hot, and is in fact sweeter than

any other capsicum. You can eat it fresh in a salad or grilled (which Frans says brings out the best taste).

They employ three people almost year round to work in the glasshouse, and an additional 15 people help with the feijoa harvest, grading and packing.

When the greenhouse plants have finished production they are removed and used to compost the feijoas.

The spray free feijoas are currently in flower. Interestingly the flowers are pollinated by birds, rather than bees. In December and January the fruit starts to develop with harvesting starting around April and continuing through until mid June.

The couple regularly welcome national and international tours on their orchard — it’s a great chance to spread the success story of sustainable biological growing to the world.

For those visiting the area and looking for somewhere different to stay check out the self-contained accommodation at the orchard. There is no doubt the de Jongs are thrilled with their lifestyle and the success they are having with their farming practices — and of course they are still revelling in the opportunity to enjoy those ‘intriguing feijoas’.

She wanted a sling because she wanted to keep active and a sling provided her a lightweight way of keeping her baby close while keeping her hands free. Slings were

also adaptable to suit the age and weight of the child.

Finding what she wanted however proved to be a lot more difficult than anticipated — she scoured the country to try and buy a baby sling.

Necessity has always been the mother of invention and for Maria-Fe — a trained creative designer — it was a matter of, if she couldn’t buy it she would create it.

Nestling into a succe ful busine by Annette Lambly-Robinson

In 2008, when Rotorua farmer Maria-Fe Rohrlach (22) was expecting her first baby

she decided she wanted a baby sling to carry her soon-to-arrive baby.

Slings are a traditional way of carrying children and while modern countries have developed numerous methods to do the same task, slings are very much in use in undeveloped countries, with various adaptions in native cultures.

As it happened her sister Bernadine Guilleux, had been living in Paris for the past seven years came back home. With a marketing and international business degrees, Bernadine quickly saw the market potential in the sling — and

being pregnant with her own child she too put the sling to the test when son Theo was born.

Combining their skills the two sisters started Nestling — working from home, doing what they loved — designing, creating and dreaming of new products and styles. Being two of five sisters and now with eight children between them they had plenty of opportunities to bounce ideas off.

For economy’s sake Maria-Fe sourced printed cotton (for the outside wrap) from ‘end of line’ suppliers effectively making each sling a limited edition and also allowing them to buy smaller lengths of fabric. Merino is sourced directly from a manufacturer.

William Harold Marsh, farmer, father, early Albertlander and adventurous photographer captured a time of enchantment, when life was lived at a slower pace and governed by a different set of values, priorities and ambitions.

This landmark commemorative book by Paul Campbell tells the story of the Albertlanders’ arrival and settling of the Kaipara area, and features many of Harold Marsh’s photographs that have been painstakingly restored.

When she and her husband Peter moved to their small lifestyle property just on the outskirts of

the Pirongia Village eight years ago they were looking for a change of pace.

Both were still working in Hamilton, Cathy as the manager of a busy animal diagnostic laboratory, and Peter a tutor in adult education.

With the children recently flown the coop, and armed with a completed business diploma, Cathy was keen to find an avenue that would support them in their semi-retirement; something she and Peter could work at from home.

For a few years self-employment remained on the backburner as Cathy mulled over the possibilities.

With a long held fascination for cheese and cheese-making she initially started making cheese as a hobby, but after positive feed-back from friends and family and winning a medal in the hobby

section of the New Zealand Cheese awards in early 2007, going commercial as an artisan cheese maker certainly seemed a viable option.

“I am really passionate about making cheese, I like to experiment and I thought to myself, working from home doing something you love doing would be the ultimate job.”

She built a cheese room and small maturing room. To be able to sell cheese she needed to be registered and commercially compliant. Her microbiology qualifications and lab diagnostic skills developed over a 20 plus year career certainly came in handy working through the screeds of paperwork and accountability requirements by the Food Safety Authorities in order to meet registration compliance.

Compliance was very hard to achieve. “No one my size had ever registered before so it was all new territory —

food safety plans, pasteurisation (a complex issue) and Risk Management Programmes plus the associated compliance and auditing fees made it a costly and a difficult business to establish.

In the beginning it was a small venture selling at the monthly farmers’ markets, but the cheeses were popular and soon Cathy found it difficult to keep up with demand and hold down her Hamilton job.

In 2007 she attended a business development centre with her idea. Within

10 minutes mentor Sandy Turner had convinced Cathy to develop ‘Cloudy Mountain’ cheeses as a full-time business.

“I already knew it, but just needed the push,’’ laughs Cathy.

Since then the maturing room has been extended to allow for the extra production, but Cathy likes to limit the production to small batches as this gives her the opportunity to experiment more often and produce excitingly different cheeses for her customers.

Cathy’s methods are strictly hands

New season, new challenges… Well that’s the dairy industry. Welcome to spring. One of the challenges farmers seem to face a lot is staff.

For a variety of reasons they can be difficult to get and to keep, leaving the farm owner to keep the farm running for sometimes many months.

The result is stress, and fatigue which can lead to accidents and worse.

What has been noticed is that in the absence of reliable staff, there is a trend toward upgrading the automation of dairy and herd management functions to reduce dependency on staff, reducing ongoing labour costs and more importantly increasing the efficiency of the overall system.

In the milking parlour you could put in automated plant and vat washers so you don’t have to wait for the wash to finish, automatic drafting gates that uses EID tags to draft the herd or heat detection using Milfos activity collars to make mating management a breeze.

Maybe auto teat spraying either in race or on bail (rotaries), these can be retro fitted to any brand of platform. In herringbones swingarms in the pit will keep the pit clear and easier to move around and help with cluster alignment.

Milfos cup removers can save time by eliminating over milking and the related problems. There are many options from flow controlled to milk metering, to networked with herd management recording.

N.b There is a special limited offer on iCR intelligent cluster remover with 0% interest, contact your local Milfos dealer for details or visit www.milfos.com.

Not enough? How about composite mastitis detection on bail along with milk yield, fat, protein and lactose or an accurate, on bail full somatic cell test every milking.

While I have only listed a few, there are a lot of ways that Milfos can help to make your job a little easier, maybe reduce some stress and give some time back for the things you want to do.

If you need some advice on how to improve your dairy, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Milfos dealer or visit www.milfos.com to find out who to talk to.

on. She works her own recipes which she has developed over time and uses non-animal rennet, and no stabilisers or preservatives.

It’s time consuming work — she spends most of the day in the Cheese Room, washing, turning, piercing blues and making the cheeses. Husband Peter looks after sales and marketing but also has a hand in some of the cheese making processes. “I couldn’t do this without Peter, we make a great team.”

She says the milk, how and where the cheeses are made and matured, all contribute to the differences in how the cheeses taste — and because they are individually handmade, they are very different to normal fare — something which appeals to many cheese lovers.

The milk to make the cheese is supplied by local farmers Peter and Raewyn Marwood. The milk from their small herd of Guernsey and Jersey cows is renowned for high butter fat and protein, perfect for Cathy’s style of soft and semi-soft cheeses. She also trialled local goats’ milk cheeses for additional variety and style, but last year decided not to continue due to additional compliance and costs.

“I prefer to make cow’s milk cheese — around 10 percent of customers want goat cheese so the demand was not huge,’’ she said. However she would like to experiment with sheep’s milk based cheeses in the future.

Cloudy Mountain has a regular stable of around 20 types of cheeses, although all of these are

not available every week. “We take about six-eight types to the Cambridge and Hamilton markets each week and these depend on what has matured.’’ It sells out quickly and is competitively priced averaging around $50 per kilo. Cloudy Mountain

does not sell to supermarkets, but does sell to several local restaurants.

“It is not a get rich quick business — it is a modest lifestyle, I make ends meet, pay the bills and (hopefully) have enough to buy additional bits and pieces for the Cheese Room,’’ says Cathy.

She is glad she hasn’t gone too big — and admits even though it’s hard work — to loving every day. Cloudy Mountain has won numerous New Zealand cheese awards since becoming commercial and all but cleaned up at the 2011 World Oceania Jersey Cheese awards with four first places and first runner up to the grand champion.

“For a company our size, that is a huge source of pride,

says Peter, but the real satisfaction comes from the direct feedback from those who love our cheese. It reinforces and affirms that we have made the right choices with our business.”

Cloudy Mountain Cheese recently built a small outlet shop on the premises which will be open on Fridays and weekends.

There are no immediate plans to expand — it’s more about creating special cheeses that represent the district, associates with the people, the mountain and the village — the attributes of a true craftsperson.

Plans for a supercentre at a 14.5ha disused sawmill site at Putaruru have entered the development stage.

Part of the five-year development, will be a five-hectare agriculture park that will include all aspects of farm life from rural machinery and supplies to tertiary level education.

A specially designed

shed will house 'history of agriculture' displays and a New Zealand Farming Hall of Fame.

To be known as Buttermilk Putaruru it will also house the normal retail, supermarket and factory outlets.

The development is currently awaiting business rezoning and resource consent.

Electric power to tame the wildby our motoring correspondent

The hybrid and electric revolution which is swiftly gaining momentum in the world of road-going vehicles would seem to be a world away from the realities of a hard day’s work in rural New Zealand.

While vehicles like the Toyota Prius aim to save the environment with lower carbon emissions and a smaller ‘footprint’, the average farmer knows the ‘environment’ up close and personal — a place of muddy hollows, rocks, streams, steep banks and unforgiving weather. Our rural environment is known as one of the most challenging places on earth for a vehicle, so more power has often been the order of the day, coupled with no-nonsense tough construction and four-wheel drive grip.

That’s where Bad Boy buggies enter the picture — a range of electric utility vehicles built tough as nails and able to do the job of a much larger truck without

the fuel bills or the bulk. Developed for hunters in the North American wilderness, these vehicles span the gap between a full-sized ute and an ATV quad, with two-seater practicality, a wide, firmly planted stance thanks to a broad wheelbase, a generously sized tray for all your tools and gear, and of course the safety of an enclosed roll cage and roof.

This kind of small, lightweight but rugged vehicle has become a regular feature on many Kiwi farms thanks to its ability to access areas where bigger trucks can’t go, or to nip around with extra tools and materials which an ATV hasn’t got the grunt or the size

to carry. The Bad Boy brings a new concept to this market — electric power. But it’s no golf cart — the Bad Boy comes from the land of the Hummvee after all, and hunters and farmers in the US are more than pleased by its 70-kilometre range on a full charge, buckets of ready torque, low maintenance costs and (literally) bulletproof construction. The Bad Boy plugs into a wall socket to charge, and can easily accommodate two workers and all their tools, plus the dog!

Because of its light weight it is able to make the best of its hi/lo

ratio drive system — unique in that it doesn’t actually need a gearbox, or indeed any complicated parts apart from its hard-wearing electric motor. The obvious benefit is a lack of fuel costs, but without gaskets, plugs, points and all the rest there are fewer ongoing costs associated with going electric as well.

Bad Boy have carved out a thriving niche building electrically powered machines for serious hunters and farmers in one of the most competitive markets in the world — North America. Now they’re poised to bring the electric revolution to New Zealand with a range of practical and tough machines to

suit every farm and every budget. And as an added bonus, in the back blocks of New Zealand we have far fewer grizzly bears to contend with!

Bull riding — a test of courage

Organised by Bull Riding Pururi, a non profit group, the event is part of the Bull Riding New Zealand 2011-2012 circuit. It will be held at the Paeroa racecourse on December 3.

Held under BRNZ Association rules the event complies with the Animal Welfare (rodeos) Code of Welfare as endorsed by the National Animal Welfare Advisory Committee

Bull riding is a test of courage and strength and the risks are obvious. Bulls can weigh in excess of 1000 kilograms and know how to buck, kick and charge.

Contestants must ride for a period of eight seconds holding on one handed to a braided rope which is wrapped around the bull, and weighted by a cowbell. The bell hangs underneath and allows the rope to fall free when the ride is completed.

The rider’s other hand must remain free at all times and is not allowed to touch the bull during any part of the ride. If it does the contestant is disqualified.

The rope has a woven hand hold which is pulled tight and wrapped around the rider’s hand.

The rider uses his legs to hold onto the twisting, jumping,

spinning bucking animal — each has its own style to try and rid itself of the person perched on its back. They wear blunted spurs to grip the bull but the spurs are not used to lock the rider in position. Riders are not required to spur the animal on but gain extra points if they do.

The bulls are especially chosen for their bucking ability and are as much on display as the riders.

During the eight-second ride, judges watch both the rider and the bull. A successfully completed ride is scored out of 50 and the bull is also scored out of 50.

There is no question bull riding can be dangerous which is why bull fighters are in the ring during every contestant’s ride.

They help minimise the risk of injury to the rider by distracting the bull from the rider when they get thrown or the rider gets hung up in his rope and is unable to get clear of the bull.

While traditionally dressed as clowns they are not entertainers. They perform an essential function likened to that of a lifesaver and display as

much courage and agility as any rider.Editorial courtesy of Bull Riding New Zealand.

Ask e Pr ionalsCould the solution to New Zealand’s tax and welfare mess be abolishing the current welfare system and radically overhauling the tax system? Is that feasible? Is it desirable? We think so.The whole point of a tax and welfare system is to redistribute income from those who have plenty to those who don’t. But our tax policies are hopeless; it’s far too easy for people to dodge their tax obligations. And our welfare policies are hopeless; well-off people can access government payments clearly not intended for them, and others are trapped into dependency.

The Big Kahuna, (by Gareth Morgan and Susan Guthrie), puts some radical changes to tax and welfare on the table.• Everyone aged 18+ gets an unconditional, tax-free basic income.• This basic income replaces all other government-provided cash transfers—NZ Super, DPB, Unemployment Benefit,

Working for Families.• All income is taxed at a single flat rate.• All capital should make a minimum required return, and that should be taxable—every year.

No exemptions for your home.We think if the job of redistributing wealth and income is worth doing, it’s worth doing properly. That means making sure everyone has the same obligations and is entitled to the same support.

Title: The Last Jump, Author: Elizabeth Benney

Publisher: Cate Catley Ltd, RRP $37.99

Kiwi-born Elizabeth Benney admits she was a brat of a child — self-centred, wilful, obstinate and living for her obsession with horses.

A top rider and judge — Liz, who has lived many years in the United States, weaves her New Zealand/American life story of sheer determination, love, laughter and sadness.

I was delightfully surprised by the book — Liz Benney's day-to-day life of running a New England horse farm and the many return visits to her own country are entertaining and thought provoking. It’s not just about horses. There are accounts of her childhood with tales dating back to the 1940s and 50s, and glimpses into the culture and attitudes of the time.

The Last Jump looks at some of the challenges we will all confront in our own advancing years — and even if we haven't yet reached Liz's seventh decade, we know they will come.

It’s a candid story. The author is so honest. She talks about her aged yellowing teeth, her sagging eyelids, and how she feels about the image that confronts her in the mirror. The reader enjoys her trips to Antarctica and China and ponders on her personal and professional decisions.

When will we be too old to follow our dreams? How will our life change as we age? When will we have to give up riding, and for Liz the hardest decision of all — when to make that last jump?

The story makes only passing mention to Liz being the daughter of Sir Russell and Lady Matthews. Born in New Plymouth, Tupare, her family home is now a historic home.

The Matthews brought the property in 1932 as a gorse and bracken covered hillside. They lived in a shed prior to the house being built and faced the many challenges of life at the time. Liz's mother's illness meant long separations from her family — the impact adding to Liz's childhood dilemmas.

Around 150 tiger trout were released into Lake Rotoma late last month to mark the 150-year anniversary of acclimatisation societies.

Set up in the 1800s, the societies preceded Fish and Game.

While tiger trout, a cross between brown trout and American brook char can't breed themselves, the species were developed about 10 years ago to provide some uniqueness to the lakes.

It's been four years since the previous release of 200 tiger trout and recent angler reports have encouraged the programme to continue. Plans are to release a further hundred next year.

The tiger trout lives for a long time and can grow in size to about eight kilograms.

Founded in America in 1996 the inaugural New Zealand programme was held in Rotorua in February

2010 and again in the early months of 2011.

The programme provides retreats at no cost to participants, which allow those whose lives have been profoundly affected by breast cancer to gather in a beautiful, natural setting and learn to fly fish.

The retreat weekend is one of fun and support — it incorporates educational services, a pamper session, camaraderie, and the sport of fly fishing to promote mental and physical healing. Professional medical volunteers are in attendance during the weekend

Trained volunteers encourage the attendees to participate at whatever level they can. On the Sunday some of New Zealand’s finest anglers — including a few of the NZ Silver Flies — the

Casting for cancer recoveryCasting for Recovery, is a national non-profit support and educational programme for people of all ages and at all stages of breast cancer

representative fly fishing team — come along to guide the participants.

“We are honoured to have this very special relationship with the Silver Flies, said CFR spokesperson, Sherrie Feickert.

“A lot of very special caring individuals work quietly behind the scenes help to make these weekends happen,” she said.

The retreats are held in the Rotorua, Te Awamutu and Nelson areas, and participants only need to get to the location. Once there, they are outfitted with fly fishing gear which they use while at the retreat.

Each retreat accommodates 14 participants who apply and are selected through a random draw.

Participants learn to cast, tie the basic knots and understand what fish eat. With the help of CFR staff and volunteers they practise catch and release techniques.

Comfortable shared lodgings and all-day refreshments with seasonal fruit and snacks provided.

“The CFR volunteers will be sharing

meal times with you, taking care of your needs and sharing in your daily recollections,” said Ms Feickert.

Next year’s retreats are available February 17-19 in Te Awamutu, March 9-11, in Rotorua and March 23-25, in Nelson.

Applications for the 2012 retreat close on Friday, November 11 and successful applicants will be contacted in December.

The programmer relies on the generosity of individual donors, foundation grants, companies and organisations.

Waikato Dairy Road show to feature Cow Signals Specialist

Irish veterinarian and Cow Signals trainer Martin Kavanagh will be the speaker in a dairy road show that will feature talks on his management and state of the art feeding systems, along with on-farm demonstrations.

Martin Kavanagh spent 14 years in veterinary practice in Ireland specialising in herd health management before becoming Keenan’s European veterinary director in 2007. In 2009 he set up Cow Solutions, an independent company that provided herd management systems to maximise cow health and output.

His New Zealand presentations will focus on the role of feed supplements in pasture-based dairying. “Pasture grazing provides dairy cows six freedoms that support health and productivity: water, feed, light, air, space and rest. Feed can be limited in grass-based systems, however,

and that can be restrictive, especially for high yielding cows,” Martin Kavanagh says.

“Forage-based supplements enable farmers to get the most out of the pasture environment. But supplements must be used safely and effectively to maintain body condition, rumen health and good metabolic process. The Cow Signals approach can help dairy farmers monitor their supplements regime. It gives farmers the tools to recognise the signs of cow health and the means to link this to what they are doing right or wrong.”

Presentations are held at:Venue: Simon & Jo Bellen, 609 State

Highway 24, MATAMATA on Wednesday 9th November @11am-1pm
