Final resultsin for Fonterra

The results in this year’s elections for Fonterra Board of Directors, Directors’ Remuneration Committee and Shareholders’ Council have been declared by returning Officer Warwick Lampp, of electionz.com Ltd.

Incumbent directors John Monaghan and David MacLeod have been re-elected and will be joined by new director Leonie Guiney.

Leonie lives and farms near Fairlie and is the director of four dairy farming companies. She has previous experience as a consulting officer, dairy production lecturer and has studied overseas co-operatives in the Netherlands and Ireland.

Leonie was also the 2014 winner of the low-input Dairy Business of the Year.

Shareholders Murray Holdaway and Philip Wilson were elected unopposed as members of the Directors’ Remuneration Committee. Wilson James joins the Shareholders’ Council.

Fonterra shareholders used their annual meeting to raise concerns over the reduced 2015 milk payout, the dairy giant’s forecasting and the way the milk price is set.

The forecast milk price it pays farmers was slashed in September from $6 per kilogram of milk solids to $5.30/kg MS plus an additional dividend payment of 25–35c/kg MS.

It comes on the back of a record $8.50 total payout last season.

In his exit speech, former director Jim van der Poel acknowledged shareholder concerns, by saying the dairy exporter had to set the benchmark for a competitive farmgate milk price.

He said it was important that Fonterra set the lead on payouts, which its competitors would then have to keep up with.

“This is not just good for our farmer shareholders but also good for New Zealand,” he said. “New Zealand milk has to be seen as a premium product and valued as such because the milk price has such a flow on in rural communities.”

Water Problems?Farm, Lifestyle Block, House Water, Pool or Spa Water?

Whatever is wrong with your water system,

we can fix it; any problem, any size.

High beef prices good for kiwi farmersHigh international beef prices are an almost perfect storm for kiwi producers, according to Federated Farmers.

The organisation’s Beef and Fibre chairman Rick Powdrell says droughts in United States and Australia have decimated herd numbers and it may take years for stock levels to recover.

The shortage of available stock is expected to take years to fix, meaning the current high prices are likely to be around for a significant period.

“You can almost call it a perfect storm,” says Mr Powdrell. “Our members are pretty buoyant about it.”

The American droughts from 2010 to 2012 forced producers to cut stock numbers to cope with a reduced amount of feed. But consumer demand for the product remained high, meaning prices rose in the world’s largest beef market when production was low. That opened up opportunities for New Zealand exporters.

It also means less competition for Kiwi producers in lucrative Asian markets, such as China.

That all happened when conditions in New Zealand — in most areas at least — remained reasonably good.

Mr Powdrell says current prices are unlikely to be a flash in the pan. “The long-term outlook is that it will take time for cattle numbers to rebuild. That would be the hope.

“All the indicators are that prices should remain high for the foreseeable future.”

Despite the public perception, Mr Powdrell says beef farmers are not rolling in money. “A lot of them are repaying debt. They’ve been through some pretty tough times. They’re also doing some repairs, maintenance and plant upgrades. They’re all things they can’t do when prices are low.”

Nuffield Scholar Satwant Singh has always enjoyed farming and spending time amongst farmers.

Satwant’s introduction to the dairy industry began at an early age as she was raised on the family dairy

farm. Originally her great-grandfather and family were market gardeners, south of Auckland. The family then bought their Gordonton dairy farm in 1970. The 90ha farm is run by Satwant’s parents as a family farm, milking 230 Friesian cows.

During her studies at the University of Waikato, Satwant said initially like many university students, her goal was to graduate and gain employment in the city. Satwant has a Bachelor of Management Studies with Honours (majoring in Marketing and Human Resources) and a Graduate Diploma in Accounting from the University of Waikato. However, in her last year of university Satwant began working for Fonterra and has continued her career there.

“I was studying part time and working full time as a service specialist for Fonterra, which is the 0800 number farmers call for anything to do with Fonterra,” said Satwant.

She joined the team when Fonterra opened its first regional hub in Waikato.

Satwant said this was a great starting point for her dairy career.

“I got to help farmers from across the country first-hand with their issues or questions about Fonterra through a typical season.

“Also the role provided me with exposure to many parts of Fonterra because being on the phones is a pivotal role for all communications.”

After two years in this role, Satwant moved on to become an area manager in Morrinsville.

She said this position allowed her to meet some great people and

passionate family farmers with strong community involvements.

“I met lots of different farmers at different stages of their farming careers and with different goals and ambitions.”

“I worked with farmers through some good and tough financial years,” said Satwant. “It was a great opportunity to be able to work and help farmers with

their businesses.” In 2012 Satwant was approached for her current role as originator for Fonterra Commodity Risk and Trading, based in Auckland.

“My role consists of developing and implementing price risk management tools for farmers and New Zealand domestic customers,” she said. One of Satwant’s achievements is the

development and implementation of the Guaranteed Milk Price programme for farmers.

“Fonterra is a big company that has been created and owned by our dairy farmers, including my own family,” said Satwant.

“Working here has opened doors and offered me some great opportunities to grow and experience.

“It’s kind of like working for your family because what I am doing is contributing and supporting all dairy farmers.”

Satwant was surprised and overwhelmed to find out she was recently selected as a Nuffield Scholar.

“I am really excited and look forward to the new learning’s and networks it will provide,” she said.

“It’s such a great privilege to have been given this opportunity to help me develop as a person, but also to be able to give back to the rural community.”

As a Nuffield Scholar, Satwant would like to research into understanding farmer’s stresses and financial pressure with a focus on price risk management.

“As we move forward, our farming businesses become more complicated as the environment becomes more volatile,” she said.

“It is important that farmers have a strong understanding of their business’s financial and overall health to ensure we are resilient to withstand changes.”

Satwant has kept close ties to the family dairy farm. Although she and her husband, Sunil Krishna, live in Auckland, they can both be found working on the farm during weekends.

“No matter what I do, I feel at home when I’m farming,” said Satwant.

DOC staff monitor and promote wetland health

R ust red and tea-leaf shades flicker past between here and the expanse of Lake Waikare,

defining the limits of an often overlooked natural treasure.

The Whangamarino Wetland is far more than just a trackless swamp. Informed by a geology of peat domes rising up through the plain, this is the second largest wetland complex in the

North Island, and perhaps the most biodiverse. While colonial settlers saw land such as this as primarily useful only when drained and tamed for pasture, the true value of the Whangamarino Wetland goes beyond its internationally recognised conservation status.

In fact, leaving this slice of nature alone has important benefits for the wider region in many ways — not the

least of which is the immense capacity of this 7,290 hectare wetland to mitigate flooding.

And while introduced species are actively discouraged by the custodians of the Whangamarino Wetland — the Department of Conservation, and Fish and Game — this area has become a favoured haunt of duck hunters during the annual season, as well as a destination for anglers, who have free access to the catfish and carp which DOC would ideally banish from the waters of the wetland. Part of the annual license fee paid by waterfowl hunters goes to restoring and maintaining areas like this around the country, because beyond being a habitat for the ducks which are a hunter’s prey, the Whangamarino is also home to a staggering array of native species, some critically endangered.

Above, that means native birdlife — one in five of New Zealand’s Australasian bitterns live here, as do

spotless crakes, grey teal, and endemic fernbirds. Below the surface live native eels (tuna), along with the unappealingly named but ecologically vital mudfish. All are threatened by introduced species,

brought here by English colonists sometimes with good intentions but no grasp of ecological cascade effects.

The Department of Conservation manages the Whangamarino Wetland from its Te Rapa Field Base, in Hamilton and has a long-term plan in place to ensure the survival of native species and the protection of this internationally recognised natural site. Whangamarino is one of three wetland sites in New Zealand managed as part of DOC’s Arawai Kakariki National Wetland Programme.

Through this programme DOC has been able to work towards managing the threats within the wetland and carry out research to better understand the catchment issues which impact on the Whangamarino wetland. Controlling weeds, managing pests and extending protective fencing around the wetland are all on-going projects. For example, two nasty weeds have emerged as a serious threat to Whangamarino Wetland and so each year DOC staff and contractors spend over 300 hours on weed surveillance and controlling the invasive weeds like Yellow Flag Iris and Alligator weed which threaten the native wetland vegetation,

Although the Whangamarino Wetland can never be restored to its original state, there are a number of different agencies all playing their parts in the management of Waikato’s wetlands, including Whangamarino. In 2011, the Waikato District Lakes and Freshwater Wetlands Memorandum of Agreement was signed by Waikato Regional Council, the Department of Conservation,

Auckland/Waikato Fish and Game Council, Waikato-Tainui, and Waikato District Council.

The purpose of this is: To recognise the values of the freshwater lakes and wetlands of the Waikato district, and to protect, enhance and restore these through alignment of our activities when working with communities, landowners, tangata whenua and interested parties. DOC will continue working collaboratively with other agencies within the wetland and in the wider catchment.

For instance, since 2007, DOC and private landowners have worked together to fence over 28km, resulting in a significant decline in the number of domestic stock accessing the wetland. Stock cause damage to the wetland by grazing and trampling sensitive plants, opening up sites for weed invasion and adding unwanted nutrients.

And aside from its benefits to both farming and biodiversity, the Whangamarino wetland is quite simply a place of surprising, ever-changing natural beauty.

Health for All LifeProtoplasm is a living substance that lls the cells of microbes, plants, animals and humans containing all the compounds of life in a mixture of such minute components that it has de ed analysis.

What matters is that the food eaten carries the protoplasm of the microbes grown with a natural balance of minerals. The purpose of eating food is to recreate a population of soil micro-organisms in the intestines. Protoplasm from the microbes can then be absorbed into the blood. All plants, animals and humans live on protoplasm and microbes are the only living thing that can make protoplasm, so to operate at the top level you need micro-organisms in your soil.

One of the most bene cial fertilisers for the soil and for the microbes is rock-dust. Agrissentials are the pioneers of New Zealand volcanic rock dust which is ground down to our and blended with our live living liquid fertiliser Oceans 100,

together with other BioGro certi ed ingredients culminating in our Rok Solid full spectrum multi-mineral, microbial rich fertiliser. Within 48 hours this beautiful brew heats up to 60 degrees centigrade, composting all ingredients into one magical mix, ready to bring life, minerals and microbes to the soil.

Now, if you want to see and experience the heat, the wonderful aroma and the live nature of our Rok Solid environmentally friendly fertilisers you are more than welcome to witness this at our South Island plant (Mosgiel) contact Darryn Graves on 027 288 0140 or our North Island plant (Te Kauwhata) contact Peter Baldero on 021 738 602.

ADVERTOR IA L

by John K Morris, CEO of Agrissentials

Agrissentials fertilisers are designed to re-mineralise the soil and pack the soil with micro-organisms and worms, satisfying two parts of the equation to grow plants and pasture (the other two parts being water and sunlight). Get these four essentials — minerals, microbes, moisture and sunlight, in the right amounts and growth will ourish.

The up and coming new technology is mans co-operative progression with nature. Nature has the capacity to yield all manner of farm produce far beyond our present expectations, disease and pest free and perfectly mineralised.

Everything emits energy, whether it is soil, water, air, chemicals or minerals. What makes each element different is the pattern of frequency at which it resonates. Some patterns and frequencies are detrimental to biological life and some are bene cial. The new technology is about these energies and how we can best bene t from them. With the help of science we will eventually be able to tune into these energies which will bene t both quality and increased production, that’s what farming is all about.

It’s time to leave the chemical age and begin working with nature and the natural capital that she provides for all life. The change to Agrissentials system of working with nature is very minimal, but hugely bene cial for you, your family, your farm and your environment.

Agrissentials are committed to healthy communities: so much so that in November for every tonne of Rok Solid or 200L of Oceans 100 you buy, not only will you will be making your soil healthy but Agrissentials will donate a further $3 to Movember, supporting men’s health. The Rose Town of New Zealand

by Joanne Speechly

Nestled in the heart of the Waikato, amidst a wide valley of peat lake and fertile farmland, is New Zealand’s Rose Town — Te Awamutu.

Home to 12,000 people, the town services a large rural community and its rich and diverse history has given rise to a unique range of visitor attractions.

Te Awamutu, meaning End of the Navigable River, is at the centre of bush clad ranges and close to the extinct Kakepuku and Pirongia volcanoes. The nearby Maungatautari, another extinct volcanic cone, is now the site of New Zealand’s largest ecological restoration project.

The town is in the Waipa District and lies close to a tributary of the Waipa River. It’s gently undulating landscape is in a fertile basin, characterised by dairy and dairy support based agriculture, with sheep and beef farming on the outer fringes.

The thriving agricultural sector is the backbone of the district, with Te Awamutu township providing a large service centre for the outlying rural community and also a large dairy factory. However, smaller horticulture and viticulture ventures also flourish

in the region. The district’s natural attributes have created an abundance of recreational opportunities, such as Maungatautari Ecological Island Reserve and Pirongia Mountain. Bush walks for day visitors or more serious treks for the experienced trampers are popular, as are the opportunities to see many forms of native birds, animals and fauna in this beautiful region.

Te Awamutu is often referred to as ‘The Rose Town of New Zealand’ because of its elaborate rose gardens. It offers a unique small town shopping experience, with a variety of cultural activities, and eating out is a pleasant experience, with restaurants within a short walk of the town centre.

The rugby grounds, polo field, equestrian centre, swimming centre and velodrome, mean that the town is also highly geared to cater for sports people and spectators.

It is located on one of New Zealand’s major tourists routes, on SH3, and is mentioned in the Split Enz song Haul

SPOTLIGHT ON Te Awamutu

Away and also Crowded House’s Mean To Me, thanks to the town’s best known residents, singer-songwriters Tim and Neil Finn.

A better lifestyle is in the mixby Andy Bryenton

Waharoa farmer Geoff Hicks has moved his herd of 700 milking goats indoors, providing them with cover from the elements and a new lifestyle.

He claims that the machine which has made this possible — the Jaylor 4425 mixer wagon — has been the key to better health and productivity for his herd.

“The goats were outside but they do so much better indoors. They don’t have worm problems, which they’re very susceptible to outdoors, and they don’t like getting cold.

Geoff Hicks says his Jaylor 4425 is robust, simple, fast and manoeuvrable

“They’re pretty happy now and production has increased.”

Geoff and his sharemilker Sean Baty used to mow grass every day for feed, but now they’ve gone one step better. They now mix ensiled grass with other feeds, creating a nutritious blend in their giant ‘farm sized’ food processor, built by the innovative Jaylor farm machinery company. After looking at other brands, Geoff — who switched from drystock to dairy goats 20 years ago — decided that the Jaylor stacked up the best,

“It was quicker than the others we trialled and made a better mix,” he says.

“We talked to a dairy farmer who lives nearby and who’d had one for years. He hadn’t had any problems and was updating and getting another.”

It was also the robust simplicity of the 4425 which won the farmer over. As he says — “There’s not a hell of a lot that can go wrong with them. It has a single auger with a heavy-duty gearbox. It’s so simple it’s not going to create trouble long term.”

Sean fills it in the evenings and feeds out three times during the day, providing the 700-strong herd with the nutrients to be happy, healthy and productive.

Racing pedigree accessible to allby Andy Bryenton

Founded in 1911, the Benelli company has long been headquartered in Pesaro, Italy.Over they years they have proven

innovators and race winners, cinching European Championship titles as far back as the early 1930s, and developing a supercharged four cylinder racer prior to World War Two. Briefly owned by Pantera supercar magnate Alejandro de Tomaso, the company now produces

approved version the mill churns out 44kW with ample torque for get up and go — the restriction used to make the BN 600 legal for beginners does little

to dampen the bike’s enthusiasm for carving through the corners.

Giant 320mm floating disc brakes equipped with powerful calipers make it just as easy to stop as it is to accelerate up through all six of the Benelli’s gears. Confidence comes with the low, stable centre of gravity, and the overall light weight of the bike (a touch over 200kg) means it’s an easy day in the saddle on long road trips.

More importantly, it’s likely to be no hassle keeping up with your mates on their bigger bikes if you’re just getting into riding. And how great does it feel to know that your very first bike comes with over 100 years of racing pedigree, and a bloodline like a Ferrari GT? Benelli motorcycles, including the BN 600S and BN 600i, have landed in New Zealand — drop in to your local supplier for a test drive of this euro road machine soon.

modern superbikes like the appropriately named TNT.

And, more interestingly, a bike designed for learner riders who want a taste of Italian super-moto thrills. The new Benelli BN 600S looks as sharp and futuristic as its compatriots from Aprilla and Ducati, and its 600cc, four stroke, four valve DOHC engine is cleverly made part of the frame for nimble, responsive handling. Holiday highways beckonby Andy Bryenton

With summer sunshine replacing winter rain, many folks are turning their attention to holiday preparations this spring, gearing up for a journey to scenic, seaside vacation spots.

Campers, RVs and caravans are all popular choices for holidaymakers, as evidenced by LTSA figures which show a growing number of Kiwis opting to get out from under canvas and slip behind the wheel of something more substantial. But this time of year, it’s a good idea to give the family ‘land yacht’ a thorough once over.

Of course this begins with the power plant — that big diesel which lurks beneath most RVs.

If you’re towing, it goes without saying that the brakes, transmission and engine of your tow car have to be in top order.

As these holiday vehicles may very well have been in winter hibernation, it’s also prudent to check the tyres for

pressure and wear, and give the battery a proper test as well.

With the WOF done, it’s time for an electrical inspection — to legally hook up to many camping grounds’ facilities, a caravan or camper needs an EWOF, meaning that its onboard wiring is up to standard.

It’s the same for the array of pumps, plumbing and gas lines fitted to most recreational vehicles. With extensive fresh water and wastewater piping, there’s a whole lot to check, with nasty results if a fault goes unseen. Gas powers everything from stoves to fridges

to water heaters in RVs and caravans, so any work on this sub-system should be appraised by a qualified gas fitter.

Taking the time now to make sure your ‘ship of the highway’ is ship-shape will mean a better holiday experience for the whole family this summer.

Fireworks all year roundby Andy Bryenton

Ford’s global reach and worldwide automotive plans continue apace, with the venerable US automaker watching the Focus dominate the Chinese new car market, the EcoSport sell out in India and the good ol’ F-150 remain evergreen in North America.

And while the planet-spanning master plan of the boys from Dearborn may mean the end of the Falcon badge downunder, there are surprises in the works from Ford to rival the announcement of Mustangs on Kiwi forecourts in the not-too-distant future.

So until the throaty V8 rumble of the sixth-gen ‘Stang is heard on Waikato roads, please consider exhibit A — a three-door hatch so hot that it’s positively incandescent. Especially in the fire-engine red trim we got to see up close and in the flesh. This is the 2014 Fiesta ST, a car which was marketed with its own brand of hot sauce on its arrival to these shores, and which throws its diminutive weight around with such precision and verve that older petrolheads can be heard whispering the words ‘Escort Cosworth’ in hushed tones after a quick spin. Not that the mad, fun little Fiesta ST shares a lot in common with the raucous, rally-bred ‘Esky’ — this is a more sophisticated beast. But consider. The roadgoing 1992 Escort Cosworth weighed 1,320 kilos and packed 168 kilowatts of power. The ST, on the other hand, is packed with far more luxury, safety and technical gadgetry, yet only

weighs 1,163 kilos. And under the hood, a 1.6 litre turbocharged engine kicks out 134kW — but also 240Nm of torque.

That means a lighter, more nimble vehicle than any other small Ford of recent memory — but also the firepower to outgun many other top euro-hatches. No wonder, when the ST was engineered in Cologne, Germany, and fettled in Belgium before being unleashed locally. You may think that the comparison between the now-legendary Cosworth and a variant of the Fiesta is heretical, but that sense of slightly unhinged yet fully planted fun is right there, making this a worthy successor to the whale-tailed road rocket of yore.

A proper six speed manual transmission rewards driving acumen with satisfying feedback, making this a cut above the average superheated shopping trolley hatch.

Those lamenting the end of the Falcon legend should take heart. There are still dedicated petrolheads calling the shots at Ford — enough to get this smile-inducing little firecracker onto the forecourts here in New Zealand. It’s evidence enough to make those who think small cars can’t be fun to think again.

What lies beneath?Building is essentially a task that begins from the ground up, and the very foundations of a house or home are vital.

But foundations also need to be revisited, as in the case of some rural buildings in Waikato, that may have started life in pioneer days. Over time piles can rot away, causing them to fail. If the house was built in an era that used totara piles, an a examination will soon determine if repiling has happened. New piles are either concrete or tanalised (H5) pine and are easy to spot.

Make sure to check out that all the piles have been replaced. It is quite common that only a few piles are new, often just around the edge of the house.

Sometimes all the piles move, but more often different piles move to different extents. This causes the house to twist, bow and crack, resulting in damage. The piles may have stopped moving, or may be continuing to move — this all depends on the cause.

If you are planning renovations, it pays to start with firm foundations or you are going to end up with an inferior result.

This involves digging new piles down to a firm base and attempting to re-align the house on this new foundation.

To establish if there’s a problem and to what extent, ask the experts. A house inspector is a good start.

Repiling is a major job and different repilers use different methods — some cut holes in the floor for access under the house and some lift the entire house on jacks to make room to work. Repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit so it pays to make plans in advance.

Repiling of course opens a lot of opportunities to do other things to a house, other than internal alterations. The house can even be moved, lifted up and another level added underneath, or shifted somewhere else completely.

The access that is gained under the house is also an opportunity to do things that in usual circumstances are quite difficult — like underfloor insulation and

working with the plumbing and electrical systems. As stated earlier, repiling requires a building permit — other additions and changes to the house can be added to the same permit so it pays to plan in advance exactly what you want to do with a house before you repile so all your permissions can be gained at the same time — saving money — and also allowing you to organise access

under the house for other works while the repiling is happening.

If you need to repile get a professional in for a quote. Costs vary and depend on any number of factors. Repiling costs start at $12,000 for a small house on the flat with easy access and quickly climb when you start getting into soft soils, erosion problems and difficult access.

Amendments aim to tidy up building actby Andy Bryenton

The rollout of changes to New Zealand’s building act — the document which governs the standards and practices of the building industry — has changed the landscape within the industry in recent years.

The emphasis on responsibility has been passed on to project managers, builders and subcontractors in allied trades in a big way, making it more important than ever to engage only trusted, qualified tradespeople to work on your home or business build.

Now another round of amendment changes is set to become law, rolling out in two stages.

The first has already been implemented as of October, while

the rest come into effect on January 1st 2015.

The aim of these amendments, according to the Government’s body responsible for building standards

and quality, is to provide peace of mind to customers, and to remove so-called ‘cowboys’ from the construction related trades altogether, through the provision of hefty fines for working

without the right accreditation. Right now, it is illegal for unauthorised people to work on a build — plumbing must be done by qualified plumbers, gas installed by qualified gasfitters, wiring by qualified electricians.

If a builder is in charge of the entire project, he must have the

right credentials too, and assure the provenance of his subcontractors.

As of January 1st all building work over $30,000 in value must have a written contract. Tradespeople will be required by law to disclose their credentials and current licensing status, or face heavy penalties.

There will also be an enforced one year ‘defect repair period’, during which a builder must repair any defects the customer informs them about — ‘no questions asked’.

Rules like these place a great responsibility on individual builders, and are rumored by some to be a precursor to changes to the Resource Management Act enabling the fast-tracking of local authorities’ role in the pre-build process — a ‘red tape cutting’ move which was a key election issue.

Large, organised builders’ associations such as the Certified Builders already adhere to the codes of best practice and strict qualifications monitoring demanded by the amendment.

As the onus goes on builders and project managers to provide longer guarantees and more binding contracts, groups such as the Certified Builders and Master Builders have already rolled out considerable initiatives putting them ahead of the curve of what the modern trade and its regulations demand.

Gout free this summer!ADVERTOR IA L

If you have gout you’ll know all about the intense gout pain. A serious condition, gout stops people moving, and prevents them doing the activities they enjoy.

But that severe pain is just the beginning. The high uric acid level in your body that causes gout pain destroys your joints over time. Worryingly, gout crystals also damage your kidneys and increase your risk of heart problems.

But the good news is that if you get your uric acid level below a target level, gout can be cured. If the uric acid is kept at 300µmol/L or below, the gout crystals cannot come back.

Evidence shows that the risk of having gout is mostly genetic, and not just because of food and drink. Now a new 30-second test at your doctor’s surgery can show what your uric acid level is — so you will know exactly what it takes to get you gout free.

After diagnosis, a newly Government-funded prescription gout medicine called Adenuric may be the best answer. Adenuric is the rst new gout treatment in over 40 years and is a brand new class of gout preventer, working in two ways to reduce uric acid. Adenuric offers new hope for

Passing the torch to a new generation of farmersAccording to statistics, the average age of the Kiwi farmer is 58 — and it’s an average which is growing as the large ‘baby boomer’ demographic moves into the sixty-five-plus bracket.

Those in more urban industries are encouraged to put their feet up when retirement beckons, but for farmers the decision to step aside can be a hard one, especially when the family farm has been handed down from generations before, and may have no clear heir apparent. There’s also a hardy, never-give-up attitude inherent to the

New Zealand farmer’s mentality — one that’s often needed to push through inclement weather, market instabilities and the responsibilities of what can be an isolated calling. This attitude sometimes means that it’s hard to hand the reins over to a new generation.

But it is important to plan ahead, even if for today and the foreseeable future

there’s still no slowing down. Currently the United States is experiencing a crisis of older farmers unable to find successors to take over the land. The UK faces similar problems.

New Zealand does not have the same factors or the same problems — for now — but good advice is still

key when it’s time to step aside. Talk to your accountant and lawyer about succession planning, especially if your kids want to follow in your footsteps — they are the best source of peace of mind and practical information when it comes to ensuring that your farm and your family have a secure future.

IS COMPLIANCE AN ISSUE ON YOUR FARM?

World’s rst NZ Inc. farm in the high tropics, higher than the Remarkables

Waikato farm development company Dairy Solutionz (NZ) Ltd will open a dairy farm in the high tropics this month.

Funded by the Colombian government and Corpoica — the equivalent to AgResearch in New Zealand — the 117ha, 300-cow unit in the Narino region of South Colombia, is the first demonstration farm to use entirely New Zealand design and technology.

With weather conditions similar to the Waikato, Dairy Solutionz chief executive Derek Fairweather says rye grass and clover are flourishing and the development is part of the answer to the issue of global food security.

“Securing enough food to nourish growing populations around the world is one of the top priorities for many governments, and we believe one of the answers to the food security issue is harnessing the untapped benefits of the world’s tropical environments.

“It just so happens New Zealand cows and pasture thrive in the high tropics. We’re using Kiwi ingenuity to take tropical land and create rich food bowls which will benefit previously poor economies.”

Dairy Solutionz Kiwi farm manager Paul Gibson

In the Narino region of Colombia, about 40 per cent of GDP currently comes from the dairy industry and about 400,000 families nationwide rely on the dairy industry for their livelihoods.

The $4m in New Zealand Aid Programme funds, initiated by Dairy Solutionz is likely to be used to transfer technology and upskill rural professionals and farmers in Colombia.

Dairy Solutionz is also active in Pakistan, Ecuador and America.

Corpoica chief executive Juan Lucas Restrepo is certain the farm will be the catalyst for a steep change in the competitiveness of the region.

The $2m development employs Dairy Solutionz Kiwi farm manager Paul Gibson, and directly benefits 14 New Zealand businesses through exports.

Patented Franchised System (561997-562216-573232)

• No storage ponds required

• 0.25mm application depthper 24 hours

• Unique “K” line system

• K-lines moved once per 21 days

• Less effluent to irrigate

• Fully Automated System

• Big saving on man hours

8 Good Reasonsto talk to Lindsay and the team

No ponds requiredThe compact yet highly ef cient Clean Green Ef uent system automatically disperses ef uent with virtually no environmental impact through it’s super low application rate.

The system starts by ltering out the solids through the Clean Green Ef uent Co patented weeping wall. The solids are retained in a concrete bunker and the liquid portion weeps through to a pump chamber. This green liquid is then pumped to a storage tank which is used for external yard wash then recycled across the yard and back to the weeping wall. The yards are washed clean without having to hose off with fresh water.

This reduces total freshwater consumption to about 20lt/cow/day instead of the normal 50 to 70lt/cow/day. This reduces the amount of ef uent to be dispersed to land to 20lt/cow per day.

The Clean Green Ef uent System has a unique distribution system that was designed for all soil types as its super low application depth (0.25mm or ¼mm) can be applied to any soil type without risk of leaching or run off. This totally automated system removes the risk of over application when soil conditions are not suitable for standard systems.

The super low application depth allows for application to soil over periods of the year when soils are near or at eld capacity.

ADVERTOR IA L

As the super low application depth allows us to apply farm dairy ef uent virtually all year round the storage requirement is minimal.

The removal of open ponds reduces the rainwater footprint and reduces the overall farm dairy ef uent having to be applied to land. Rainwater catchment with conventional ponds can contribute to millions of litres per year of liquid to be dispersed.

Rainwater contribution can equate to more liquid than is produced in the dairy shed.

The patented distribution system is fully automated and only requires about three hours work per month to maintain this problem free ef uent system.

For any further information on the system, please call Lindsay and his team on 0800 400 365.

New appointmentChad Campbell is making the move to fencing and weighing as the Matamata based Tru-Test area sales manager for North, Central, South and West Waikato and the King Country.

He will primarily be responsible for Tru-Test’s electric fencing brands and weighing and EID category both on farm and managing store relationships with PGG Wrightson, Farm Source (RD1) and Farmlands.

Chad makes the move from three years in the PGG Wrightson Matamata store, where he became very familiar with Tru-Test’s brands and reputation. He originally hailed from Te Puke and schooled in the Hawkes Bay before heading into farming around the Hawkes Bay and the Waikato and working his way up to a lower order sharemilker. He then worked as a commercial sherman with Sanfords in Mount Maunganui until family commitments took him to Rarotonga where shing was mostly recreational.

Scott Wards, Tru-Test North Island sales manager says “Chad brings a

sought-after mix to the Tru-Test team. His history of being a farmer himself and his work in the rural retail environment means he both understands the challenges and needs of our customers rst hand.”

Debating a beef cooperativeAfter some lean years that produced a fair bit of hardship for beef farmers, their prospects are looking up as they enjoy high prices of up to $5.90 per kilogram for prime steers and with bulls fetching $6.00 a kilo.

The has been much debate in the media on ‘where to from here’. Some are advocating that the beef industry should form a Fonterra-type cooperative – but on the opposite side of the coin are those who ask that if the Fonterra cooperative model is the way forward for beef farmers, how is it Fonterra can’t halt the fall in milk prices.

The suggestion of a lack of modern-day farmer loyalty has also been raised as an argument that forming cooperatives does not guarantee continued farmer loyalty and supply. It’s suggested many modern-day farmers like to enter into their own negotiations with independent processors and it is evident since the formation of Fonterra there has also been the establishment

Be my GuestBill Guest Farmers of New ZealandMembership Services: 09 439 5219 • 09 430 3758www.farmersofnewzealand.comEmail: [email protected]

of a substantial number of independent proprietary milk processing companies, some with overseas shareholding and others like Open Country where the main shareholders are the Talley Group in the South Island who have acquired ownership of Affco - the former Auckland Farmers Freezing Company.

Fonterra director Ian Farrelly, who rears 10,000 calves, said last week that the beef industry lacks a strategy for adding value to the 1.9 million dairy farmer bobby calves which are processed every winter for veal and by-products.

Farrelly claims that if these calves were on-reared they could add billions of dollars in extra revenue to New Zealand’s agricultural export industry.

Depending on weight bobby calves can realise $2.10 per kilogram or $37.38 per head. If they were reared to 220kg–320kg weight range, at today’s prices they could realise from $1,200 to $1,800. With regard to loyalty and what is good for farmers, I believe that today’s farmer should remember that history has shown that in the early years due to a lack of organised cooperative marketing, many farmers felt they were at the mercy of the skilled negotiators of individual companies whose offices and cool store facilities were located in Tooley Street, London.

Dairy produce was all sold on the free market system with the directorates or proprietors of individual Tooley Street companies accepting full responsibility for sales and trading. They decided upon the terms of sale, methods of transport and choice of agents.

London Tooley Street traders’ representatives used to deal directly with individual New Zealand dairy companies. It is said that a farmer’s yearly income depended on how much whisky was applied to the local dairy company manager during the negotiations.

For many decades 95.6% of New Zealand’s income came from products grown on its pastures. The New Zealand government eventually formed the New Zealand Dairy and the Meat and Wool Producer Boards in an endeavour to bring organised marketing of New Zealand’s agricultural products, with a guaranteed price system which was

the price that the farmer received for his produce.

Over the years these structures have changed. It is important that we farmers should never forget the many years of hard work and investment that New Zealand farmers have committed to not only producing our agricultural products on the farm, but also being involved in the marketing and receiving our rightful share of market profits.

While there are some farmers who believe that they can better manage the marketing of their own produce, in the long term, I firmly believe that New Zealand’s farming history demonstrates that farmers who take the cooperative approach will win in the end.

To make farming easyTechniPharm is a New Zealand owned company providing leading animal handling and farm automation solutions.

They realise that handling animals can be a challenge on any farm — whether you have three sheep or 1,000 cows — and because their goal is to ‘make farming easy’, TechniPharm caters to both commercial and lifestyle farmers.

Good yards and an adequate handling system, such as a cattle headbail or handler, are critical for

providing safety for the operator and containment and hold for animals.

If an animal can ip and op widely in a holding system, it is unlikely to settle and chances are, you will not be able to do the job that needs doing. The fact is, animals want to feel secure and comfortable and once they are, they will settle down more easily.

With new OSH legislation on our doorstep, it is critical that safe handling is not overlooked in either design or functionality.

Weighing and EID tag reading are two examples of tasks that can be completed automatically and safely while animals are in a handler, and for

bulls, a good castrating system will help to get the job done with con dence and without pain.

Paci ers use neuro pulsators to help animals relax and are great if you are working by yourself and nally, a good yard system is paramount and the TechniPharm Smart Yard system is a fantastic steel yard solution, which can grow with your needs.

DWN farewells long-time board members

Michelle Wilson and Angela Fullerton have stepped aside, but not out.As long-serving members

of the Dairy Women’s Network board, they plan to retain a keen interest in the organisation.

At the AGM last month, Michelle Wilson officially handed over the reins as chair to Justine Kidd, and board member Angela Fullerton also officially stepped down after 12 years.

They cite giving other women opportunities in the Network’s governance roles as one of the main reasons for taking a step back.

“The network has evolved over the last couple of years and it’s time for someone else to step up,” says Michelle.

Having just completed stage one of the Fonterra Governance Programme, she says her new focus will be on increasing her governance knowledge so she can give back to the rural sector. She hopes to be selected for stage two of the programme.

Michelle became a member of the Dairy Women’s Network in 2003 and took on the regional convenor coordinator role in 2004.

She first appeared on the board in 2006 and was appointed chair in 2010.

Since 2006, membership has almost tripled and the Network’s regional groups have grown from 12 to 30.

“The membership growth has been an absolute highlight, as was being invited to represent Dairy Women’s Network and the New Zealand dairy industry at the APEC Women in Leadership Forum in Beijing, and managing to continue Dairy Women’s Network business as usual whilst in the executive chair role.”

Angela said in her address at the AGM that it was after attending her first DWN conference in 1998 that she gave herself permission to get involved in the dairy farming business.

“I want to thank the Network and its members for recognising my strengths and abilities and allowing me to grow. You are women I treasure.”
