Design Thinking Overnighter (article submitted by Ms. Oyama & Ms. Funasaki)

Teleportation backpacks. Backpacks with wings that can fly you around. Backpacks with… bacon generators! These are some of the out-of-the-box ideas that the 5th and 6th grade Student Leaders and Enrichment Students came up with when challenged to design an ideal backpack at the Design Thinking Overnighter on September 27-28 at Waikele Elementary School. Guest speakers Sherice Ajifu, Dana Kagawa, and Jenn Tengan from Moxie3 Innovations led the students through the Backpack Challenge using the Design Thinking (DT) Process - a human-centered approach to problem solving that has been used by developers to design many well-known products such as the first computer mouse and the stand-up toothpaste tube. The students also enjoyed many other team building activities during the overnighter. They went on a scavenger hunt in the dark, made s’mores, camped out in Hale Kukui, prepared breakfast and lunch, and decorated pencils and pencil holders for Hale Kukui. Special thanks to chaperones Mr. Aki, Mr. DeSamito, Mr. Wong, Mr. Ginoza, and Mr. Oshio for helping to make this event possible.

Design Thinking with Grade 6

Waikele Elementary Sixth graders have been hard at work in their Design Thinking Process project on Healthy Living and Sustainability. Design Thinking (DT) is a creative process that fosters innovation and was developed at Stanford University to look at real world problems. The students are first given a real world problem that affects them. Then they go through the different phases: Empathy, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. The Sixth graders have done research and conducted interviews on campus and have visited Kualoa Hakipu’u Educational Center. We will be visiting Kunia Country Farms next to learn more about farming and aquaponics. Another way we will conduct interviews is to bring industry people related to farming and super-markets. Our preschoolers are also embarking on this journey with us. We are excited to share that we are part of the Waipahu Complex Design Thinking Aquaponic Challenge. The entire complex will be partnering with Waipahu High School’s Natural Resources Pathway. This is an exciting journey having all seven schools in Waipahu collaborate and go through DT together integrating aquaponics farming. We will keep you posted as we learn together and share our progress.

Thank you for your support – Grade 6 Teachers

Waikele Elementary School School Community Council (SCC)

Aloha Waikele Family and Friends, My name is Tricia Nekota. Some of you may know me as Tanner and Hunter’s mom. This 2013-2014 school year, I continue to carry my leadership role as the School Community Council (SCC) Chair for our wonderful school. I was elected the SCC Chair last year and was able to learn many of my responsibilities and duties. I have an amazing and supportive committee consisting of members that really help to make our council very dynamic and outstanding. Our members include the Principal, Vice-Principal, teacher, non-certificated staff members, students, parents, community members and staff volunteers. I would like to acknowledge the following individuals: Principal – Sheldon Oshio Vice-Principal – Kevin Ginoza Vice-Chairperson & Co-Facilitator – Jo Ann De Witt Co-Corresponding & Recording Secretaries – Nicole Amby & Karen Cheung (Certificated Teachers) Certificated Teacher – Chi Fung Chan Non-Certificated - Barbara Kaneshiro, Mel Yacap & Christine Laupola Parents – Mary Higa & Tricia Nekota Community – Corinne Gyotoku & Cary Miyashiro Students – Channah Garcia, Jensen Garcia & Tanner Nekota Special Member Volunteers: PCNC - Kiana Moore & Counselor – Arneita Kailiawa As the School Community Council, our main objectives are to be in accordance with the State guidelines and be consistent with policies of the Board of Education. We are primarily an advisory committee, ensuring the school’s academic and financial plan is consistent with the educational goals set forth. Our goals are outlined in the school’s vision and mission statements. We’d LOVE to see you, hear from you, and get you involved! Every year we have two Formal Meetings that you are invited and encouraged to attend. The dates are October 17th and February 27th beginning at 6:30p. So mark your calendars!! Mr. Oshio will share the overall school and student performance data, AND give you an opportunity to ask questions, share your thoughts on how we can better our school and make improvements. SCC welcomes your comments, ideas, suggestions, and input throughout the year. In the Front Office, there is an SCC box where you can place your anonymous message to us. Working together as a team is important to the success of our future shining stars. Waikele Enrichment News

Hooray! Waikele Elementary is officially one of seven schools competing in the HECO Home Energy Challenge! Thank you to all the families who signed up. We couldn’t have met our goal of 130 participating families without each and every one of you. Over the next few months, Enrichment students in grades 3-6 will be designing ways to help all of our Waikele families reduce their electricity consumption at home. Be on the lookout for the many tips and activities that they will be sharing with you. The school with families that show the greatest reduction in electricity usage can win $10,000! Participating families that show a reduction in electricity usage can also qualify to win a free photovoltaic system for their home! Our kick-off event, the Energy Conservation Family Night on August 30, 2013, was lots of fun. A crowd of almost 200 parents/guardians and kids enjoyed games, activities, prizes, and hands-on demonstrations as they learned all about energy conservation. Thank you to Ms. Sam Nichols from the Hawaiian Electric Company for a very informative and entertaining evening. Thank you also to all of our faculty and staff volunteers who made the event possible.

Keeping Your Children Hydrated Exposure to extreme heat or cold may make a person seriously ill. The likelihood of heat-related illness also depends on factors such as physical activity, clothing, wind, humidity, working and living conditions, and a person's age and state of health. At Waikele Elementary, we encourage parents to send their child(ren) to school with a water bottle or sports drink so they can hydrate themselves during school hours. Being well hydrated will help the child's body to acclimate better when leaving the air-conditioned classroom and entering the outdoor weather conditions. Waikele Elementary has adequate water fountains, but not all students take advantage of utilizing them. PLEASE LABEL ALL BOTTLED DRINKS WITH YOUR CHILD’S NAME. ALL UNLABELED CONTAINERS WILL BE DISPOSED.

Request For Administration/Storage of Medication In School

No medication will be stored in the Health Room or administered by the authorized Public Health Nursing Branch and/or DOE personnel without the completion of form PHN/SHS36, Rev. 4/03, and prior approval by PHNB personnel. Medication must be in a container/vial dispensed by the Pharmacist with instructions "FOR SCHOOL USE" with the name of the student, name of the medication, dosage, strength, time of administration, and name of prescribing physician. This form is good for the current school year and needs to be renewed yearly. Parent/legal guardian is responsible to obtain the form for the following school year.
