26 3 May 2019 The Principal’s word Welcome back to Term 2 and another busy and action packed time.

The ANZAC service held at the Waimate Events Centre was an impressive community occasion and it is so good to see our young people choosing to participate in these events. Well done to our students on the appropriate way in which they carried out their roles. On Monday the Prefects also held a special assembly to commemorate ANZAC. They read the famous poems ‘In Flanders Fields’ and the ‘Victory Emblem’ and explained the stories behind them. Catherine played The Last Post.

Quote of the week: ‘Lest we forget it is easy to be human, very hard to be humane.’ Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib

Staff Changes We have had some recent staff changes that we thought you should know about. Firstly, congratulations to Mrs Dooley who has been appointed as Acting Deputy Principal for the remainder of 2019. She has taken over from Mr Ikahihifo who has moved to a new position at Te Kuiti High School. As a result of Mrs Dooley’s move, Miss Dollan has been appointed as Acting Head of Science for the rest of the year. Mrs Simpson has moved to become the Pastoral Manager of Yr’s 11,12 and 13. Miss Jarvis will now be the Pastoral Manager for Yr’s 7 and 8 students. In addition, Mrs Nicolson has taken over the in-school Community of Learning role we have. We welcome back Mr Greg Familton who will be teaching a range of Maths, Science, Life Skills and Digital Technology. Please join us in congratulating these staff on their new positions.

Mr Greg Familton

Pavement Art

On the last day of term one, the 12th of April, we held our annual Pavement Art Competition on Queen Street. In light of the tragic events that happened on March 15th in Christchurch, the Arts Committee decided that the theme will be world peace. This decision served as a way of showing the school’s support for those affected by the horrific tragedy. It was amazing to see the students’ creativity through their art, covering the pavements with impressive

designs filled with vibrant colours. We would like to thank everyone for their participation, and we would also like to thank the staff members as well as those who assisted to make this event possible. A huge thank you to The Town Friar for sponsoring this event by giving the first-place getters in each section a voucher for cheese burger and chips (or equivalent).

Year 7H In our 7H English last term we were looking at formal and informal letter writing. It was while I was reading a book by Nicholas Sparks from the school library that I first learned about the Kindred spirit mailbox. I shared it with the class, and we decided to write letters to the mailbox. Our letters will be posted today. We are hoping someone out there who reads our letters may choose to write back to us c/-the school.
