Welcome to issue 9 of the Wakefield North Review. With spring justabout upon us I think we’re all looking forward to lighter nights andwarmer weather and to at last saying goodbye to the wintery weather thathas plagued us this winter.

Many local businesses have really suffered over the last year with therecession and the bad weather, so please do support the businessesaround you rather than going further afield. One of the strengths of theWakefield district is the many individual towns and villages, each with it’sown identity and local economy. Supporting your local businesses will helpensure your own community retains it’s own spirit and will help it to thrive.

We are now planning our late spring and summer issues of theWakefield North Review, so please send us details of your summer fayres, fetes, galas and festivals as soon as you have them so that we can includethem in our Diary section or Community pages. We’re also always happyto hear about local news, achievements and campaigns, so get in touch ifyou have anything you would like featuring in future issues. We can’tguarantee inclusion, but we’ll do our best.

Here’s to a lovely warm, bright and happy springtime,

welcome

century, but the

gods of Mount

Olympus seem

to have walked

out of the pages

of Percy

Jackson's Greek

mythology texts

and into his life.

Percy has

learned that his

real father is

Poseidon, god of

the sea, which

means Percy is a

demigod - half

human, half god.

At the same time, the powerful gods on Olympus

are feuding, which could launch a war enveloping

our entire planet.

To prepare for the adventure of a lifetime, Percy

travels to a special enclave called Camp Half

Blood, where he trains to harness his newly

discovered powers and prevent a devastating war

among the gods. There, he meets two fellow

demigods - the warrior Annabeth, who is searching

for her mother, the goddess Athena; and his friend

and protector, Grover, who is actually a brave but

untested satyr.

Grover and Annabeth then join Percy on an

incredible transcontinental odyssey. At journey's

end rests the fate of the world - and the life of

Percy's mother Sally, whom Percy must rescue

from the depths of Hell itself.

Our Verdict: Very Harry Potter-esque but fastpaced and an excellent supporting cast. Theinclusion of Greek mythology was a great idea andlots of fun. Pleased we saw it on the big screenrather than waiting for it come out on dvd.Thoroughly enjoyed by adults and children alikeand looking forward to the sequel.

Starring: Logan Lerman, Uma Thurman, Pierce

Brosnan, Sean Bean

health & wellbeingMigraineMigraines are severe headaches that often have a number of

associated symptoms and are quite common, affecting about

one in four women and one in 12 men in the UK. It is

thought that hormonal influences may be the reason why

migraines affect more women than men.

It is possible for migraines to begin later in life. However, it is

more common for the condition to begin in childhood or as

a young adult. About nine out of 10 people who experience

migraines have their first one before they are 40 years old.

Some people experience migraine attacks frequently, up to

several times a week. Other people only experience a

migraine occasionally. It is possible for years to pass between

attacks.

Stages of migraineThere are five distinct stages to migraine, although not

everyone experiences all the stages:

1. 'Prodromal' (pre-headache) stage. Some people

experience changes in mood, energy levels, behaviour and

appetite, and sometimes aches and pains, several hours or

even days before an attack.

2. Aura. In about one in six cases, a migraine is preceded by

an aura. Symptoms include flashes of light or blind spots,

difficulty focusing and seeing things as though through a

broken mirror. This stage normally lasts around 15 minutes

to an hour.

3. Headache stage. This is usually a pulsating or throbbing

pain on one side of the head. There is often nausea or

vomiting, extreme sensitivity to bright light and loud sounds,

and a strong desire to lie down in a darkened room. This

stage lasts for four to 72 hours.

4. Resolution stage. Most attacks gradually fade away. Some

people find the headache stops suddenly after they have

been sick. Sleep often relieves the symptoms.

5. 'Postdromal' or recovery phase. There may be a stage of

exhaustion and weakness afterwards.

Migraine triggersMany factors have been identified as triggering the onset of a

migraine, including emotional, physical, dietary, environmental

and medicinal factors.

Emotional triggers - include stress; anxiety; tension;

shock; depression or excitement.

Physical triggers - include tiredness; poor sleep quality;

shift work; poor posture; neck or shoulder tension and

travelling for a long period of time. The menopause can also

trigger migraines.

Dietary triggers - include lack of food (dieting); delayed or

irregular meals; dehydration; alcohol; food additives; caffeine

products, such as tea and coffee, and specific foods like

chocolate, citrus fruit and cheese.

Environmental triggers - include bright lights; flickering

screens, such as a television or computer screen; smoking

(or smoky rooms); loud noises; changes in climate, such as

changes in humidity or very cold temperatures; strong

smells and a stuffy atmosphere (a lack of fresh air).

There is currently no known cure for migraine, and sufferers

tend to manage the condition with a combination of

painkillers and avoiding known triggers. Some people find

that complementary therapies such as acupuncture and

homeopathy help to keep migraines at bay but when a

migraine strikes, many people find that sleeping or lying in a

darkened room is the only way to lessen the pain and ease

the attack.

food&drinkEaster Simnel CakeLent is the period of 40 days which comes beforeEaster, beginning on Ash Wednesday. For manyChristians, this is a period of fasting andrepentance in preparation for Easter, culminating ina feast of seasonal and symbolic foods. In the late17th century, girls in service brought a rich fruitcake called simnel cake home to their mothers onthe fourth Sunday of Lent. The cake was enrichedwith marzipan and decorated with 11 marzipanballs representing the 12 apostles minus Judas, who betrayed Christ.

Ingredients

For the almond paste

250g/9oz caster sugar

250g/9oz ground almonds

2 free-range eggs, beaten

1 tsp almond essence

For the cake

175g/6oz butter or margarine

175g/6oz soft brown sugar

3 free-range eggs, beaten

175g/6oz plain flour

pinch salt

½ tsp ground mixed spice (optional)

350g/12oz mixed raisins, currants and sultanas

55g/2oz chopped mixed peel

½ lemon, grated zest only

1-2 tbsp apricot jam

1 free-range egg, beaten for glazing

Method

1. For the almond paste, place the sugar and

ground almonds in a bowl. Add enough beaten

egg and mix to a fairly soft consistency.

2. Add the almond essence and knead for one

minute until the paste is smooth and pliable.

3. Roll out a third of the almond paste to make a

circle 18cm/7in in diameter and reserve the

remainder for the cake topping.

4. Preheat oven to 140C/275F/Gas 1. Grease and

line a 18cm/7in cake tin.

5. For the cake, cream the butter and sugar

together until pale and fluffy. Gradually beat in

the eggs until well incorporated and then sift in

the flour, salt and mixed spice (if using) a little at

a time. Finally, add the mixed dried fruit, peel

and grated lemon zest and stir into the mixture.

6. Put half the mixture into a greased and lined

18cm/7in cake tin. Smooth the top and cover

with the circle of almond paste. Add the rest of

the cake mixture and smooth the top leaving a

slight dip in the centre to allow for the cake to

rise. Bake in the preheated oven for 1¾ hours.

Test by inserting a skewer in the middle - if it

comes out clean, it is ready. Once baked,

remove from the oven and set aside to cool on

a wire rack.

7. Brush the top of the cooled cake with the apricot

jam. Divide the remainder of the almond paste

in half; roll out a circle to cover the top of the

cake with one half and form 11 small balls with

the other half.

8. Place the circle of paste on the jam glaze and

set the balls round the edge. Brush the cake

topping with a little beaten egg.

9. Preheat the grill to high. Place the cake onto a

baking tray and grill for 1-2 minutes, or until the

top of the marzipan begins to brown.

Alternatively, lightly heat the cake topping using

a cook's blow torch, until the marzipan is

golden-brown

THE EMPIRECinema Themed Fish & ChipRestaurant, Takeaway andDrive-ThruTUCKIN G into a plate of the finest fish and chipsis always something of an occasion – but there’sone local restaurant where it becomes a reallyspecial event.

That place is the Empire, the former cinemaalongside the A61 at Outwood, which even fromthe outside brings back fond memories of abygone age of old-fashioned entertainment.

Step inside, however, and you’ll be in for a bigsurprise, for you’ll find yourself in a modern air-conditioned restaurant which, at the same time, has preserved much of the character andatmosphere from its cinema days.

Proprietors Brian and Sheila Cooper went togreat lengths to keep the cinema theme runningthroughout the restaurant, with memorabiliaranging from the golden age of the cinema up tothe modern era.

Everywhere you turn there are classic posters, photographs of film stars, even old cinemaprojectors, while one corner of the restaurant isdominated by a big screen showing classicmovies to watch while you eat.

As well as loving the food, diners will enjoythe family-friendly atmosphere and the fact theycan take advantage of the children’s menu andspecial deals for senior citizens.

The extensive menu is divided into curtains up(starter) and main event (main course) sectionsand offers plenty of choices beyond fish andchips, while the Empire also has a well-stockedlicensed bar.

Groups and parties looking for a venue with adifference are welcome to make a booking – anddon’t forget the Empire’s takeaway and drive-through service.

Fish and chips were never as much fun as at theEmpire. Telephone 01924 870002 to book atable.

A Little Bit of History...The Empire Cinema opened in 1921 and was owned andoperated by Rothwell Empire Ltd; it offered seating for 750and bookings were made at the hall. The Empire offeredone show nightly and the prices were between 4d and 10dper person. It featured a projector width of 28ft and it'stelephone number was Lofthouse Gate 7169.

The Empire Cinema also housed a Fish & Chip shopand DIY store at the front of the building, where thetakeaway is now. One of the cinema’s originalprojectionists is still a customer of ours today!

The Empire was closed to film in 1964 and was unuseduntil 1967 when it was then opened as a bingo hall.

The period of time between The Empire being a bingohall and becoming the establishment it is now is somewhatsketchy. It is believed to have been a childrens’ nursery fora period of time and has also been a carpet store.

In 1995 the idea was conceived to open the first everdrive through Fish & Chip takeaway in the UK, along witha 'themed' restaurant and take away. The idea was born andthe Empire Fish & Chip restaurant, takeaway and drivethrough was opened amongst much hype. The moviethemed restaurant was a real talking point and was evenfeatured on the 'Big Breakfast' show for the most amountof Fish & Chips served in an hour.

parenting...Expert opinion has changed a little over

recent years over how best to protect your

teeth and the teeth of your children from

decay. It was once thought that brushing

after every meal and avoiding sugary foods

was the surest way maintain a sparkling

white smile.

Many dentists now advise that is isn’t the

quantity of sugary and acidic foods but the

frequency they are eaten. They believe that

teeth can cope with three sugar attacks a

day, when your saliva goes to work to

neutralise the acid and protect the teeth. So

having a cake, biscuit or sweets after a meal

will allow your body to naturally get to work

on the sugar attack. Any more than three

sugar attacks a day and your body struggles

to keep on top of the acid that forms and

damages teeth. So if your child must eat

sugary foods, allow them with meals and not

to snack on throughout the day. For the

health of your childrens teeth, they are better

gorging on three Mars Bars at the end of a

meal than chopping up one Mars Bar and

eating a little bit regularly over the space of a

day!

With regard to how often your children

should brush their teeth, the advice is for

them now to brush when they wake in the

morning BEFORE breakfast, as this help to

get rid of the plaque and bacteria that has

formed overnight when their mouths are at

their driest with the least saliva to counteract

the acid. Brushing before breakfast with a

fluoride toothpaste helps to coat the teeth

with a protective layer which prevents acid

doing too much damage.

It is now thought that brushing teeth soon

after eating foods containing sugar, and

particularly after drinking a sugary fizzy drink,

actually damages the teeth because the

sugar and acid from the food or drink

temporarily softens the enamel of the teeth.

Brushing whilst the enamel is in a weakened

state is abrasive and over time can strip the

enamel from the teeth causing sensitive and

weakened teeth and dental erosion.

The advice from many dentists is now to

wait at least an hour after eating before your

children brush their teeth and before bed-

time it is better for your children to have

nothing to eat TWO hours before brushing

their teeth and going to bed, apart from

water. If they must have something to eat

within this time, the best types of food are

cheese, plain yoghurt and other alkaline

foods that don’t contain added or natural

sugars.

• Start cleaning teeth as soon as they appear.

• Develop a water habit from the beginning. If

you want your children to have fruit juice -

is it better for teeth to drink it through a

straw so the teeth aren’t continually bathed

in the sugars.

• Avoid fizzy water. Although it doesn't have

sugar, the carbonated water attacks enamel

in just the same way as acid.

Healthy foods to be wary of...

• Milk - Although milk is an excellent source

of calcium, vitamins and minerals it does

contain lactose, which is a natural sugar

and can damage teeth. If milk is consumed

frequently there is a higher risk of dental

decay, so should ideally be drunk around a

meal time.

• Raisins and dried fruit - A healthy

alternative to chocolate and sweets - dried

fruits can be a real problem as they stick to

teeth and contain a high level of natural

sugars.

• Fruit - While we all need our five a day, it's

better for their teeth to give your child raw

vegetables as a snack rather than fruit. If

they do have a piece of fruit, give them a

small piece of cheese to eat afterwards to

neutralize the acids.
