WHS Principal Mike Crouch
Crouch: The Class of 2010 is a class actBy WILLIAM SNOWDEN
“This is kind of a special group to me,” Wakulla High School Principal Mike Crouch says of the seniors of 2010. When he started as principal four years ago, these students were freshmen.
Add to that, that he was assistant principal at Riversprings Middle School before coming to the high school, and he has spent seven years watching these students grow.
“Beyond that, they are really a terrific class,” he says. “They have class.”
The Class of 2010 has been one of the best and most responsible, Crouch says. For example, on the senior trip to Disney World, he re-ceived compliments on the group and their behavior.
“I’m very proud of them,” he says. “Proud because they have challenged the other classes to set the bar high.”
Time and again, he says, speak-ers come to the school and say the students in the class sit and listen, they pay attention, and are involved.
Th i s yea r has been remarkable not only for the number of athletic scholarships award-ed – 16 so far – but also for academics. One-tenth of the g raduat ing c lass – 25 students – has been accepted to Florida State Uni-versity.
With Advanced Placement classes
and dual enrollment, a considerable number of seniors are graduating with college credits. And one se-nior has taken enough college-level courses that, as she leaves high school, she is only a few credits shy of being a college junior.
In addition to those achieve-ments, Crouch says this is just a nice group of kids.
“ I t ’s just nice w h e n yo u l i k e interacting with these teenagers,” he says wi th a grin.
With experienc-es of their senior
year, Crouch says, this group has made “memories that are going to last a lifetime.”
They are a really terrific class. They have class.

Scholarships are awardedBy JENNIFER RAYMOND
Wakulla High School held its Awards Assembly on May 14 to honor its seniors and a few underclassmen.
A majority of the assembly included the announce-ment of scholarships received by the senior class.
“You will see thousands and thousands of dollars of scholarships given out today,” Principal Mike Crouch told those in attendance.
Superintendent David Miller said the number of scholarships, with Bright Futures included, is probably in the millions of dollars.
“We know our future’s in good hands,” Miller said.According to Assistant Superintendent Beth O’Donnell,
72 students received Bright Futures scholarships, either the Florida Academic Scholar, Florida Medallion Scholars Award or Florida Gold Seal Vocational Scholar Award.
The two scholar athletes for Wakulla High School were Artigua Kilpatrick and Spencer Smith.
William Shane Matthews received a United States Naval Academy appointment.
Capt. Ron Huddleston, who presented the appoint-ment to Matthews, said the Naval Academy is one of the top three most selective colleges in the country. Out of 17,400 people who applied to the academy, only 1,250 were selected.
“This is really significant because of the level of com-petition,” Huddleston said.
The Wakulla High School Academic Team was also recognized at the assembly for earning third place at the state-wide competition.
The team includes Kenny Chadwell, Malcolm Kelly, Laura McCann, Eric Parks, Belle Robinson and Carole Toler.
The two students who received schol-arships from the Wakulla County Arts Coalition are Malcolm Kelly and Bennett Webb.
In order to apply for the scholarship, students must be pursuing a major or minor in the fine arts.
Wakulla High School’s Drama perform-ing Arts Award went to Elliot Broger for drama and Adam Evans for stagecraft.
Teacher Susan Solburg described both as exemplary students.
“If I could adopt another son, it would be Elliot,” she said.
For Evans, she said, “He’s handy with tools and not afraid to use his gifts.”

By AMANDA COUNCILWe embarked on a memorable journey
in April: We were all excited for two days off of school, though none of us were aware of the memories we would make and the friendships we would share.
We arrived in Orlando and went straight to Universal Studios and Islands of Adven-ture for the entire day and most of the
evening. We rode rides, shopped and ate. After a divine afternoon in the park we headed back to the Hampton Inn for long showers and some rest!
We were awakened the next morning by the voice of the lovely Mrs. Franklin. Each of us enjoyed breakfast and were all excited to board the bus for Hollywood Studios.

Barrington Hebert and Artigua Kilpatrick were crowned the 2010 Prom King and Queen. This year’s theme was “Sights from San Francisco.” Each area within the University Center was decorated to resemble places in San Francicso, from the hippie-ish Haight-Ashbury district to Chinatown. The idea for
the theme came from the Biology Honors trip to California a couple years back. Pictures from the trip were enlarged and placed around the ballroom. First runners-up were Mark Price and Erica Mayhugh, and second place was Antonio Kilpatrick and Amanda Council. (Photos by Brandon Brooks)

Class of 2010You’ve worked so hard these past school years and have achieved so much. We could never have expected more. You’re on the Honor Court in the top Twelve, a Commended National Merit Scholar, have two full ride scholarships, have been accepted in to the FSU Honors program, and so much more. You have exceeded our expectations academically, but most of all, you have stayed true to your beliefs in Jesus. You fully understand that it is only the testimony you give and what you do for the Lord that matters. Thank you for the great example you’ve given your siblings, all five, soon to be six. Most of all though, thank you for putting God first, and your family next.
VICTORIA ~ The Board of Directors of Promise Land Ministries Lighthouse would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the selfless hours you have volunteered to operate the sound and video systems each and every Sunday. We pray that God will bless, protect and lead you as you enter into this new era of life. Always remember if you want to make sure what you are doing will be blessed, find out what God is blessing, and do that…

Continued from Page 12GWe traveled in large groups, which al-
lowed us to bond with more individuals than we were used to. We rode the Rockin’ rollercoaster, saw many 3-D movies, and even rode the famous Tower of Terror.
One of my favorites was the American Idol show. Real people auditioned, even our own Mark Price, Spencer Smith, Liam Daniels, and Scott Varner – though unfor-tunately none of them made it to the level where they perform for the real audience.
We left the park early to allow us plenty of time to eat dinner, rest, and get ready for an amazing night in Magic Kingdom for our Senior Grad Night. Aware that we would all be up late, we needed our rest.
After we dressed up and took plenty of photos, we load-ed the bus for the best night of our lives. The ride to the park was close to being the best part: music was blaring and we were all dancing and singing.
Keri Hilson, All Time Low, and Paramore played that night in Magic Kingdom but we were too busy to stop and listen; we had rides to ride, clubs to dance in, and people’s company to enjoy.
One of my personal favorites was the Silent Dance Party. As you walk in the door, you were given a pair of headphones. Then you would chose DJ A or DJ B to dance to. The only thing you could hear was your music, and only thing you could see was everyone dancing up a storm! It was awe-some.
It was a long night, but the friends made it worth it. Once we got back to our hotel,
we all were ready for some much-needed sleep. We all woke up the next morning to get ready for a nice ride home.
I recommend this trip to everyone. The people to bond with and memories you make are the best rem-
iniscences of high school. It is a journey of a lifetime that you will cherish deeply forever.
Grad night
Music was blaring and we were all dancing and singing.
