A NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN

Advancing communities along their smart cities journey is best accomplished by bringing all stakeholders—city officials, providers and technical experts and community members -- together to share experiences, troubleshoot challenges and identify models for success.

At Smart Cities Week Washington D.C., we introduced an important new tool in the city toolbox— Smart Cities Project Activator. This online portal enables cities to collaborate with a wide array of stakeholders to build consensus, refine smart city plans and ultimately make projects easier to fund or finance. All 2019 Smart Cities Readiness Challenge Grant applicants will receive free access to Project Activator for one year, whether or not they are selected as a challenge grant winner.

Both experienced and novice cities shared their stories and sought guidance from one another throughout Smart Cities Week. The City Readiness Hub discussions paired an official from a city at the beginning of its readiness journey with one farther along, but dealing with similar issues and goals. In these mentoring sessions between five pairs of cities and regional government entities, participants candidly discussed their unique and common challenges and identified pathways forward to address issues such as robust digital city services, shared and complete mobility systems, climate change and sustainability and other topics of critical importance to cities. The 2018 Readiness Challenge Grant Cities – Las Vegas, NV, Cary, NC, Birmingham, AL, Louisville, KY, the Commonwealth of Virginia and Puerto Rico – discussed their project plans, accomplishments to day and brought their stories and enthusiasm.

We welcome every city to join our community of cities and corporate leaders paving the way towards a more livable, workable and sustainable future. Our next Smart Cities Week will be in San Diego in mid-April. Please join us!
