THE SPANISH WAR OF SUCCESSION AND FELIPE V

CHRONOLOGY OF THE 17th CENTURY:

Felipe III

Felipe IV

Carlos II

THE 18TH CENTURY BROUGHT NEW THINGS TO SPAIN...

In 1700 Carlos II called The Bewitched (El Hechizado) died without having any children. This meant a serious problem because if there is not a king, nobody can rule

Spain.

Two families wanted the Spanish throne:

The Habsburgs were from Austria. This is the family that was ruling

Spain until 1700.

The Bourbons were from France. They ruled Spain

after 1714.

FLAG OF AUSTRIA

This rivality led into the Spanish War of

Succession (1701-1714)

At the beginning, the Succession War was a civil war, but

then it turned into an international War.

Civil war: it is a war that takes place between two groups of people inside

the same country.

The Treaty of Utrecht brought some consequences:

The dynasty (family) of Bourbons

replaced the Habsburgs

Felipe V became

king

Spain gave Menorca and Gibraltar to England

Spain gave the territories of the Netherlands and Italy to Austria.

Felipe V

He was an example of absolute monarchy (monarquía absoluta). This means that the king (or monarch) has

unlimited power.

He also centralized the power

Felipe V was inspired in the king of France,

Luis XIV, the Sun King.

He was called Sun King because people thought that monarchy had a devine origin.

VERSALLES PALACE, PARIS

He belonged to the Bourbon

dynasty, so he was family of

Felipe V.

His personal motto was The State, it's me! (El Estado, soy yo)
