Local business Pro Business Academy is continuing where they left off last year and are offering free computer lessons to the community.
The lessons are basic computer skills where participants are taught essentials skills, like using the internet, how to use Microsoft Word and how to search for jobs online.
“What we found is that not only do people lack basic computer skills, they don’t know how to upload their CVs online or navigate job hunting websites.
“Our biggest challenge is we have had a lot of elderly people attending class, but the younger generation has been staying away.
“The younger people seem to be more interested in working, not learning,” says Sadiqa Carelse, the
teacher and co-owner.The business has started
a CV box where people can drop off their CVs and the team can upload it on sites like Indeed.
People will then get notifications via email.
“We have also started working with recruitment services, help our clients find work and get people online.
“We’ve started helping people register their non-profit organisations as we found many struggled with funding because they are not registered.
“But, of course, one can’t register when they don’t know how to use a computer,” says Carelse.
It is important to note the free lessons the business offers are not accredited, but they do have long-term courses which are accredited and people can
list on their CVs.The business is also
going to take in two interns who show the most promise in class and offer them more training and a stipend.
“We are also available to give lessons at schools if they have a lab which we can use.
“We teach young and old, men and women,” says Carelse.
The free lessons start on Friday and people can register for the classes between Monday and Wednesday.
There are 10 lessons per week, divided into two three-hour sessions.
For more information contact 011 812 0611 or 064 889 6466.
The business is located at the Veranda Centre on 5th Street, next to the Springs Library.

Vrydagaand het AfriForum Springs buurtwag en Bakerton GPF hande gevat om ’n sigbaarheidspatrollie van stapel te stuur.
Die Afriforum takke in Brakpan en Kempton Park het hulle vergesel.
Ongeveer 710km is afgelê, 94 manure altesaam.
Bakerton gaan gebuk onder ’n vlaag van misdaad sedert die feesseisoen.
Volgens die Bakerton GPF voorsitter en hulle lede, kan misdaad nie gelate aanvaar word nie.
Cornel Swart, AfriForum Springs

The metro has responded to Cemetery targeted by vandals, in which The Addie documented how vandals have been desecrating the graves in the Geduld Cemetery.
In December last year, it was discovered that some of the graves at the Geduld cemetery were missing their headstones and in the case of cremations, the urns and ashes were also missing.
Themba Gabede, metro spokesperson says, “after it was brought to our attention, on intervals, precinct and security officers are monitoring the place, during their patrols.
“The City, through the
metro police, and other law enforcement agencies are already engaging with and involving nearby members of the community (those residing around the Geduld
cemetery), so that they report to the nearest police station.
“They can also use our Call Centre number 086 054 3000, if they see any form of vandalism taking place in the cemetery.
“While a risk assessment
to establish the type of risk and the remedial action needed is underway, we will continue to patrol, while also reminding members of the community
to be our eyes and ears on the ground,” says Gadebe.
The spokesperson went on to say while there is no caretaker on the property as this is an inactive cemetery, records
are placed at Springs and Petersfield cemetery, and on a monthly basis a full maintenance contractor, maintains the cemetery.
There were also plans in place to demolish the house-like structure at the cemetery.
