How does your water get from these

to this?

Page 3: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

Salinity:

Vocabulary to KNOW

Pieces of rock & soil carried along a stream or river

The amount of dissolved salt in the water

The cloudiness or haziness of a stream due to large amounts of floating or carried sediment

Sediment:

Turbidity

Floating Egg Experiment

2 cups of cold water, a large glass jar, 4 tbsp. kosher salt, a spoon and a raw egg.

Pour 1 cup of the cold water into the large jar. Dissolve the kosher salt in the water by stirring it with a spoon

Pour the remaining cup of cold water gently into the glass jar and avoid disturbing the salt water as much as possible

Slowly drop the raw egg into the water. The raw egg will sink through the plain water but will stop and float where the salt water begins.

Salt water is more dense than plain water, so it makes the egg float.

Salinity Demo

Page 5: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

The amount of dissolved salt in the water

What is salinity?

Why is salinity important? It tells us how much fresh water has

mixed with salt water It impacts the density of the water

which determines how water will move It impacts various chemical processes It affects the biotic factors in an

ecosystem

Page 6: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

Sediment - When streams flow, they break down rocks and soil which are then carried along downstream.

Runoff from nearby fields can also carry sediment into streams and rivers.

Pieces of rock and soil carried along a stream or river

Is anyone checking this water to see how dirty it really is?

Page 7: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

Hydrographer s carry numerous glass bottles to obtain samples of the river. The brown water here indicates the presence of a lot of fine dirt particles (sediment), making the turbidity of this water is very high.

Turbidity can also be caused by bacteria and algae!

Page 8: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

What does turbidity tell us about the river?

How cloudy or clear the water is

Turbidity

Would turbidity affect animals or plants in the river?

What makes the water turbid?

Sediment, Bacteria and Algae!

Page 9: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

Measuring the turbidity of a water

source is one of several tests that help

determine water quality

Page 10: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

Water quality tells us whether the water we

drink is CLEAN or POLLUTED!

Page 11: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

Why should I care about water quality?

Polluted water can make you sick or

even kill you!

Page 12: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

How can I find out if these are clean?

TEST THEM!

Page 13: Warm Up The Chesapeake Bay Watershed is made up of which six states? In our local watershed, water from South Riding flows into ________ ________ which

Water Quality Scientists look at

several factors to see if the water is healthy

• Dissolved Oxygen (DO)• Nitrate• pH• Phosphate• Temperature• Turbidity

Water Quality Testing LabMaterials

– Safety Goggles – Gloves – Water Sources

– LaMotte Water Monitoring Kit

Procedures:  Follow the directions posted at each station. Use the correct equipment and handle all materials with caution. Once each test is complete, you may dispose of your chemical waste material down the sink with the faucet running.
