warm wishes

Page 2: Warm Wishes Fall 2012

As we embark upon our 30th year of granting wishes, we want to celebrate, recognize and thank you all for your generous gifts of time and support. We hope for your continued help so we can reach more children and grant their one true wish. Our job is far from over, and we are working hard to meet the need. It is estimated that there are 726 wish-eligible children in our area. We have a big job to do to reach them all!

We can stand proud knowing that last year we completed more than 310 wishes – the single largest number ever granted by our Chapter! There is still great need as we set our goals even higher for the new year, hoping to grant 335 wishes for children in Orange County and the Inland Empire.

The impact of a wish is a life-changing experience, not only for the child and family, but also for the community as a whole. This was witnessed firsthand as we both recently participated in Jorge’s wish to be a soldier for a day and play “move out, move out” with his brothers.

Make-A-Wish partnered with the incredible Marines at Camp Pendleton to grant Jorge’s wish. We watched a huge smile stretch across Jorge’s face as he was made an honorary one-star General by none other than the Commanding General himself. His wish didn’t end there. Jorge rode in amphibious vehicles, toured the flight line, practiced his marksmanship, and even received a sharpshooter award. Jorge’s wish, and his never-ending smile, will carry life-long memories – not just for Jorge, but his entire family and all the Marines at Camp Pendleton.

According to our national Wish Impact Study, more than 89 percent of wish parents stated that the wish experience resulted in increased emotional strength for children to work toward improving their health status. It is our goal to continue to bring hope, strength and joy to all of the children we serve!

Thank you all and Best Wishes!

Nearly 300 walkers came out to support Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire for the inaugural Inland Empire Walk For Wishes® event, presented by Ontario Auto Center, Sunday, Aug. 26. The event was held at the Ontario Convention Center and raised more than $22,000. The top fundraising team was Disney Ontario Warehouse, which raised more than $5,000 and

adopted the wish of a local child. The top individual fundraiser award went to Franco Tamburrino, who raised close to $2,000!Walk For Wishes featured popular morning radio personality, DJ Evelyn Erives, of Riverside’s KGGI - 99.1 FM. Several current and former wish recipients also came out to walk, including 15-year-old Brigette, who spoke to the crowd just before the walk began about her wish to have a shopping spree in New York.

Another former wish child, Isaac, who was diagnosed with ALL when he was only a few years old, and his family were also in attendance. Isaac’s wish to be a pirate was granted in 2009. He is now 8 years old and has been cancer free for more than a year. The entire Martinez family has been giving back ever since they were first introduced to Make-A-Wish. “We just want to help and do for other kids

what Make-A-Wish did for us,” said Kimberly Martinez, Isaac’s mom. “Getting Isaac’s wish granted was something our whole family looked forward to, and it gave us a chance to forget about doctor visits and cancer treatment for a while.”The Ontario Auto Center sponsored the Walk For Wishes event, and registration for the walk gained participants entry into the Inland Empire Auto Show. Hansen’s Natural supported the event as the beverage sponsor. Sam’s Club donated food for the morning.Dozens of volunteers pitched in, and together with all the sponsors, walkers and wish families, the Walk For Wishes event made its mark on the Inland Empire.

Be on the lookout for information regarding our 3rd Annual Walk For Wishes event taking place Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the Orange County Great Park in Irvine.

Hemet, CA – To 5-year-old McClain, football is everything. It’s more than a pastime; it is 100 percent pure fun – what being a kid is all about. McClain waits for his dad to get home from work so they can practice together, and when they watch a football game, McClain likes to cheer for the “red team.” When McClain’s wish granters asked him what he wished for more than anything else, no one was surprised by his reply. He wanted go play football for the red team, to yell “hike, hike, hike” and throw the ball to a real football player. On his wish day, McClain was whisked away to the USC Trojans spring game at the LA Coliseum, where he was invited to join the Trojans as an honorary team member. Equipped with his very own jersey bearing the name McClain in bold letters across the back, McClain ran plays on the field for more than an hour before the game, practiced tackling and yelled “hike, hike, hike” with his fellow “red team”

players, including punter Kyle Negrete, pictured below. During the game, McClain critiqued the game from the press box, sipped Gatorade from the team cooler on the sidelines, and met the USC Song Girls. At halftime, McClain climbed the ladder to conduct the Trojan Marching Band in the school’s fight song. To start the second half, McClain joined the team to run out of the tunnel, carried on the shoulders of USC’s team captains, Matt Barkley and TJ McDonald. When they reached the 50 yard line, Barkley taught McClain to stab the field with his sword, just like the drum major. The 20,000 people in the Coliseum roared with praise, touched by the bravery of this tiny football fan. At the end of the game, Coach Kiffin named him the game’s MVP and presented McClain with an autographed game ball, a souvenir he can grasp and remember that wishes really can come true.Sharing this experience with

McClain and seeing his absolute joy was a gift beyond measure for McClain’s parents. His wish transported them all to a world in which rare blood disorders and hospital visits don’t exist. Cheerful memories of this happy day will help them meet the challenges ahead with hope, strength and joy.

Volunteering with Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire gives you the opportunity to make a lasting impact on the lives of children in your community. The time and talents that individuals give as volunteers are invaluable and essential to the Make-A-Wish mission. Volunteers help fulfill this mission in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, wish granting, event planning, fundraising, office assistance and much, much more! Every task is important, every position is essential, and every volunteer is cherished as every piece is crucial in putting the wish puzzle together.

You, too, can be a part of providing unforgettable experiences for local children with life-threatening medical conditions. There is a particular need for Spanish speakers but all are encouraged to apply! Simply visit www.wishocie.org and fill out a volunteer application to start your journey! As one volunteer once said, “The reward is in the eyes and smile of a wish child. There is nothing more fulfilling and nothing more that I would rather be doing than making sure every child that qualifies to receive a wish gets the experience of a lifetime!”

We need volunteers!

John Ott began his journey with Make-A-Wish when his daughter became a wish child while battling a very serious brain tumor. When Nikki’s health took a turn for the worse, she and her dad had a heart-to-heart conversation in which John asked his daughter, “Nikki, what am I going to do without you?” Nikki replied, “Daddy, I know what you’re going to do. You’re going to help other kids like me, because that’s what you were made to do.”

John took those remarkably insightful words of his little girl and committed to live by them, becoming an outstanding volunteer for Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire.

More than 10 years later, John gives to Make-A-Wish out of a heart that understands the lasting impact of a wish more than most can. He makes

sure that every child is well taken care of.

John has affectionately been dubbed “The Transporter” as he is often stopping by both offices to move equipment all over the territory for wishes. He is also phenomenal at acquiring in-kind donations and is an active member of the Speakers’ Bureau, going out and sharing his story with the community.

In light of all that John does and continues to do, he stood up at this year’s Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon to the applause of a standing ovation and the wiping of many teary eyes to accept the first ever Nikki Ott Award, a living memorial that will be given to former wish kids and wish families who exemplify the spirit of Make-A-Wish and the heart of precious Nikki.
