OUR SCHOOL VALUES
Creativity
Achievement
Respect
Encouragement
Every Day Counts, is the catchphrase that is
used by the Department of Education to
highlight the importance of students attending
school every day. Going to school is the single
most important part of your child’s education.
Students learn new things at school every day,
missing school time puts them behind.
We all want our students to get a great
education, and the building blocks for a great
education begin with students coming to school
each day.
If students miss school regularly, they miss out
on learning the fundamental skills that will set
them up for success in the later years of school.
There is no safe number of days for missing
school – each day a student misses puts them
behind, and can affect their educational
outcomes.
Each missed day is associated with
progressively lower achievement in numeracy,
writing and reading.
If for any reason your child must miss school,
there are things you can do with your school to
ensure they don’t fall behind:
Speak with your classroom teacher and
find out what work your child needs to
do to keep up.

Provide a note explaining the reasons for their absence.
Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with your classroom teacher as
early as possible.
Principal Meeting
Last week I attended the Manningham/Monash Principal’s Network Meeting in Doncaster. The
keynote speaker was Inspector Geoff Darlinson, Area Commander Manningham Police. Geoff spoke
about the issue of family violence and the importance of building respectful relationships in our
society. He shared with us an alarming statistic. Last year in Victoria there were 80,000 incidents of
family violence reported. That is a staggering one every eight minutes. Victoria Police are working
hard to break the cycle and educate society, including children, about the impact that violence has on
families and the importance of building respectful relationships. He reiterated a number of times,
that there is no excuse for violence and it is important to have respect for self and others. This is an
important message and one that we enforce at Warrandyte Primary School. Respect is one of our
core values. We impress on our students that all behaviours and the choices that they make are done
respectfully. As a community, we should talk to others with respect, we should treat each other and
their property with respect and show self-respect. If our school network can work together to educate
our school community about the importance of respectful relationships we will go a long way to
reducing the incidence of violence in our society.
Our second guest speaker was Tensil Ali, a four time Australian Memory Champion. He once
memorised the entire contents of two Yellow Pages books in a month. He shared with us strategies
for improving memory and how these strategies can be applied to our everyday lives. He also
admitted that he has not always had a great memory - he has had to work on it. Visual association
plays a key role in many of the strategies that he uses. So next time if you see me making up a story
and talking to myself in the yard, I’m probably just trying to remember some names.
Congratulations
To all students for making efforts to get to school (and class) on time and begin their learning
To our senior students for their exemplary behaviour on the sporting field during Inter-School
sport competition
Austin (FKL) for demonstrating to the whole school how to shake hands appropriately
Henry (5/6R) for his excellent contribution to this week’s Alert
Our award winners from this week’s assembly - keep up the great work!
Thought of the Week
Respect people’s feelings. Even if it doesn’t mean anything to you, it could mean everything to them.
Have a great week.
Warrandyte Primary School Open Night
Last Tuesday, Warrandyte Primary School presented one of the best Open Nights ever! Some of the
students showed off some of the best work in years. It was like the colonial times had come to life.
The Years 5/6’s had brought all of the colonial characters back to life. The Years 5/6’s were the
colonial characters! There were bushrangers, squatters, suffragists georgists, botanists and many
more.
The Years 3/4’s also joined in the fabulous night by dressing up as convicts and showing off some
wonderful work as well. At 8pm, the Years 5/6’s walked up to the Bampi and performed in the
‘Bushband’ with Kevin O’Mara. They sang Home amongst the Gumtrees, Road to Gundagai and
Wild Thing, which was an enormous hit. It was one of the best nights ever!!! By HENRY 56R

Before & After Care News
Warrandyte OSHC program would sincerely
like to thank Doreen for all her assistance with
our day to day operations. She has often been
the first introduction to the program directing
parents to enrolment forms, taking booking
requests/cancellations and taking daily
messages etc.
We all wish her the very best in her retirement.
I have personally worked with Doreen for the
past 29 years and will miss her greatly.
Good Luck Doreen.
CORALIE
Goodbye to my friend, Doreen
Doreen has been the face of Warrandyte
Primary School for many years and I am proud
to say she is my friend. Doreen has looked after
many different Principals during her time in the
office. She has tackled the jobs that the rest of
us detest - plumbing problems of all types, fixed
broken machinery, cared for & “removed”
injured or dead animals (including possums,
birds, dogs, cats, rats, snakes and of course our
school chickens). The children love coming to
sick bay where Doreen takes charge attending
to broken bones, cuts, bruises, sprains, head
injuries, vomiting children, dirty and soiled
pants, offering her advice and sometimes just
giving some reassurance.
Doreen is able to sniff out gas leaks, fire and
rotten food in our staffroom fridge. Of course,
we all know how multi-talented she is. While
entering data on the computer, she will be on
the phone and count money at the same time.
The Department of Education continually
challenge office staff with new systems and
protocols, but Doreen embraces them every
time. Doreen has led the school at every
Warrandyte Festival except for one year when
she attended a Hawthorn football match in
Tasmania. And who can forget her many
memorable school concerts she has performed
in after being, once again, the face in the foyer
making sure everyone had their tickets. Also
the numerous years of the WPS Christmas
Carols where both Doreen and Coralie were the
emcee’s with the funny jokes that the parents
always looked forward to.
Doreen’s years of knowledge about the school
and the wider Warrandyte community are
invaluable. She has been my “rock” in the
office and I will miss her expertise, wisdom, her
banter, laughter, some tears, but most of all her
friendship. I won’t miss those unexpected and
bone shaking sneezes, and of course the
Hawthorn memorabilia including her computer
screen saver of Doreen and David with the
premiership cups.
Thank you to David for always being willing to
help out at school – whether it is collecting the
mail, plumbing problems, making things,
assembling things and painting just to name a
few, he has also been a huge part of
Warrandyte Primary School.
It is now time for Doreen to hang up her boots
at WPS so that she can spend more time being
a Grandma and of course travelling. Doreen
leaves WPS with all my very best wishes and
friendship. Thank you Doreen for just being
you.
