Establishing Corporate Innovation CommunitiesA Social Capital Perspective

Because of the specific characteristics of innova-tion communities, social relationships between community members play a pivotal role for performance in such settings. In response, Martin Dumbach takes a social capital perspective and approaches the research question: What are antecedents of social capital in corporate innova-tion communities? Using both qualitative as well as quantitative methods, the research presented offers interesting insights into the dynamics of the development of community networks. In more detail, the author describes innovation commu-nity social capital as a self-reinforcing asset that is affected by antecedents on the individual, the community, and the organizational level. These findings add to the literature on innovation com-munities and social capital and have important implications for community management.

China in Global FinanceDomestic Financial Repression and International Financial Power

Against the backdrop of China’s increasingly influential role in the international financial architecture, this book seeks to characterize and evaluate China’s financial power potential. It does so by analyzing the relationship between domestic financial repression and international financial power in the context of the political economy of the developmental state. On the basis of a novel theoretical framework for the analysis of the financial power potential of developmental states, the book provides an in-depth analysis of China’s approach to currency internationalization, its creditor status and its policies towards the Bretton Woods institutions while contrasting the country’s present role in global finance with the position of the Japanese developmental state in the 1980s and 1990s.

Features 7 Explains how China’s political system influenc-es the country’s rise in global finance 7 Places the development of China’s financial system in a comparative perspective 7 Draws on numerous Chinese-language sources and interviews with Chinese experts

National Intellectual Capital and the Financial Crisis in Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, and the United StatesIn the first decade of the twenty-first century, the biggest event of worldwide proportion was the 2008 global financial crisis, which was caused primarily by ineffective governance, failed surveil-lance systems, and implementation flaws. While fiscal and monetary policies succeeded in pulling many countries out of a financial freefall, most economies have performed beneath pre-recession levels as governments continued to struggle with their finances. Examining the financial crisis from the viewpoint of intangible assets provides a different perspective from traditional economic approaches. National Intellectual Capital (NIC), comprised mainly of human capital, market capital, process capital, renewal capital, and financial capital, is a valuable intangible asset and a key source of national competitive advantage in today’s knowledge economy.

The Call Up to the MajorsA Systematic Approach to the Economics of Minor League Baseball

Just like any other business, Major League Baseball (MLB) seeks to continually increase brand aware-ness and brand value. Maintaining high consumer demand for its product is an important element of this business strategy. It is the unique relation-ship that MLB has with Minor League Baseball (MiLB)—and more precisely, the fact that the fan base for MLB and MiLB are very similar—that al-lows the MLB brand to reach outside of the major leagues, into the minor leagues, and into the way the minor league game is structured and played.  Major League teams provide each of their Minor League affiliates with players and coaches in order to develop baseball players who can eventually play for the MLB parent club or be traded for another player who can.

Features 7 Explores the relationship between minor league baseball and major league baseball using economic analysis 7 Analyzes minor league baseball using approachable applied economic research 7 Develops policy analysis that is useful for minor league and major league baseball execu-tives as well as academics in sports economics and sport management

Contents 1.Introduction.- 2.Structure of MiLB and compari-son to MLB.- 3.Comparison of MiLB to other sports.- 4.Value of the MLB brand.- 5.Regulations imposed by MLB on MiLB.- 6.Competitive Bal-ance in MiLB.- 7.Regionalizing affiliates.- 8.Spring Training agglomeration affects.- 9.Conclusion .

Challenging the OrthodoxyReflections on Frank Stilwell‘s Contribution to Political Economy

Political economy focuses on issues that are funda-mental to individual and collective well-being and rests on the proposition that economic phenom-ena do not occur in isolation from social and political processes. One leading Australian politi-cal economist is Frank Stilwell. Highlights of his work include concerns with the creation and use of wealth, inequalities between rich and poor, the spatial implications of economic growth, and the tensions between economic growth and the envi-ronment. Stilwell has been especially prominent in developing alternative economic policies, with seminal contributions to understanding the radi-cal shift in Australian economic and social policies since the early 1980s. He has also been a leader in the teaching of political economy to many cohorts of first-year university students.

Features 7 Critical analyses of contemporary problems and policies from alternative economic perspec-tives 7 Chapters written by internationally renowned authors over a wide range of political economy topics 7 Written for a wide readership

Theory of InnovationA New Paradigm of Growth

The current economic theory of innovation mainly analyses the technology factor and its impact on economic growth. Two-Person Zero-Sum GamesTwo-person zero-sum game theory deals with situations that are perfectly competitive—there are exactly two decision makers for whom there is no possibility of cooperation or compromise. It is the most fundamental part of game theory, and the part most commonly applied. There are diverse applications to military battles, sports, parlor games, economics and politics. The theory was born in World War II, and has by now matured into a significant and tractable body of knowledge about competitive decision making. The advent of modern, powerful computers has enabled the solution of many games that were once beyond computational reach. Two-Person Zero-Sum Games, 4th Ed. offers an up-to-date introduction to the subject, especially its computational aspects. Any finite game can be solved by the brute force method of enumerating all possible strategies and then applying linear programming.

Features 7 Updated 4th Edition that is devoted entirely to TPZS games 7 Explains how to solve interest-ing types of two-person zero-sum games that have a large number of strategies available to the adversaries 7 Includes chapter exercises and a downloadable Excel workbook that utilizes Excel’s built-in Solver

Contents Single Person Background.- Maxmin Versus Minmax.- Matrix Games.- Markov (Multistage) Games.- Games with a Continuum of Strategies.- Blotto Games.- Network Interdiction.- Search Games.- Miscellaneous Games.

The book analyzes the role of a changing age dependency using a Branson model and it derives implications for the stock market price index, the exchange rate and the interest rate. Economic globalization needs to be politically managed and through the Transatlantic Bank-ing Crisis and the Euro Crisis the need to more carefully draw the rules of the game for financial globalization has been highlighted.

German Covered BondsOverview and Risk Analysis of Pfandbriefe

The Pfandbrief, a mostly triple-A rated German bank debenture, has become the blueprint of many covered bond models in Europe and beyond. The Pfandbrief is collateralized by long-term assets such as property mortgages or public sector loans as stipulated in the Pfandbrief Act. With a history that goes back to the 18th century and a high market share in today’s covered bond markets, the German Pfandbrief is the most established covered bond. Until today, no single Pfandbrief has ever defaulted. Even though Pfandbriefe have survived the financial crisis comparably unharmed, investors have become more sensitive regarding the creditworthiness of the correspond-ing issuer and sovereign, the strength of the legal (or contractual) framework and the quality of the cover pool serving as collateral.

Features 7 Comprehensive analysis of Pfandbrief-related risks and the legal framework of Pfand-briefe 7 Extensive list of more than 200 Pfand-brief-related references providing an ideal starting point for further research 7 First monograph (outside lobby and interest groups) on the German Pfandbrief, representing the only monograph with unbiased information on this product
