From the East
Brethren,
I hope you all are doing well and have survived the winter and have stayed
healthy. It has been a long and hard winter and I am sure everyone is
looking for spring to arrive. I know I am looking forward to hearing the
sounds of the birds singing, flowers popping up and blooming. But this
also bring with it cleanups from the winter and/or damages done from the
several severe Northeasters that we had. Brothers; We need to keep in
contact with all our members and widows to make sure they are doing
well. We need to be informed if anyone needs any assistance of any form.
Please go out of your way and make contact with any Brothers you know
of, even just to say Hi, how are you doing, we miss seeing you.
One of my goals for this year is replacing the chair lift that was in the
Lodge. We have many Brothers and visitors who have great difficulty in
climbing the stairs or do not come to the Lodge because they cannot climb
the stairs. There should be no reason that a Brother misses an event
because of this. I have started a fund to raise money to fund the purchase
of a new chair lift. We will need to raise about $2,800.00. My goal is to
have this completed and installed before we resume in the fall.
In February, the Saturday before our Past Masters Master Mason Degree,
we held a breakfast that was open to all Brothers, their families and
interested guest. It was a great time where Brothers and families socialized
with each other. I am planning another breakfast for April 7 and hope to
see even more Brothers and families there. There is no charge for this, just
come and have fun.
On March 31, we will be making a bus trip to Putnam Lodge #46 in
Woodstock. This is one of the other ancient ritual lodges in Connecticut,
while you will see similarities there are also a lot of differences. Members
of Putnam Lodge have come and visited us many times in the past and it
would be great to have an overwhelming showing to their lodge. We will
Washington Wayfarer Volume XXIX, Issue 2

be leaving from our lodge at 8:00 AM, attending their meeting which
starts at 10:00 AM, having lunch there and then returning. I expect to be
back about 2:00 PM in Windsor. Please come out and make this a great
day and show how great a Lodge Washington #70 is.
Coming up later in the spring, we will be holding our annual Lobster
dinner on April 27th and Shad Derby on May 19th, and we will be needing
help for the Breakfast, Chips Event and our food tent which we do every
year. Set the day aside to come out and help. On June 25th will be the
annual Stewarts Cookout, and award of our Lodge Scholarships.
If any Brother has an idea of something they would like to see the Lodge
do, please let me know or any officer know, we want our Lodge to be the
best and strongest it can be, making everyone proud to be a member of
Washington Lodge #70.
Fraternally,
Sterling Viets

From the West
Brethren,
We have raised some new Masons and raised a new kitchen. In true
Washington Lodge form I think we have kicked 2017 off with a bang! A
famous author once said "One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if
one has not dined well.” My brothers we must be the most intelligent,
well loved and well rested men in Windsor because we have dined
well!! I'd again like to thank Matt Chmiel, Mark Fernandes and all the
brothers who prepared the Past Masters and Table Lodge meals. I'd also
like to thank the Stewards and Brothers who have helped me in
kitchen. We call it labor or work, but I enjoy the time spent cooking and
cleaning in the kitchen with my fellow brothers. I have become better
acquainted with some of you over the past 3 months than I did in the
previous 5 years. I feel it is when we come together outside of the Lodge
meetings to cook, clean, paint, rehearse, deliver poinsettias and pull of all
our other amazing events that we are truly a brotherhood! I encourage all
of you participate as much as you can. Finally, the year is far from over
and we still have much to do. There are several degree meals and the
Stewards Cookout coming up before the summer break. There are also all
the Shad Derby events. Please let me know you are interested in helping
out.
Fraternally,
Joseph C. DiFraia

From the South Greetings Brethren,
Who are we?
Washington Wayfarer Volume XXIX, Issue 2
April – August/ September 2018 Page 6
It is my opinion that Masonry remains the best kept secret in the world. It
is much more than I thought it was and if I had known, I would have
petitioned a Lodge a decade or two earlier. These sentiments are
commonplace within the fraternity. Now that we know - we can consider
who we are and what we are doing: making good men better, of course.
Most of our work is structured around making new Masons - Initiating,
Passing and Raising our new Brethren. This is after all what separates us
from “service clubs”. We are each on an individual path of spiritual
alchemy. We support and assist each other as we increase in strength of
character and moral insight along our path. Our degrees are the means to
an end, and are meant to be experienced more than once and from varying
perspectives.
We are all workmen in the Temple; supported by Wisdom, Strength, and
Beauty; and through Faith, Hope, and Charity we carry our Masonic light
into the world.
Fraternally,
Mark T. Keenan
Junior Warden 2018
From The Senior Deacon
My Brothers,
One of my biggest worries about becoming Senior Deacon was
memorizing the “Staircase Lecture.” As many of you know it is quite
long, quite involved and you have to move around while you are giving
it. And, as many of you have noticed over the years, ancient ritual never
uses one word where two or more can suffice! I mean, just a simple
edification, learning, teaching would be much too simple, easy or
deficient.
Washington Wayfarer Volume XXIX, Issue 2
April – August/ September 2018 Page 7
Yet this fear led to a wonderful reality, and that is that so many brothers
willingly stepped up to volunteer to help me learn it. From Past Masters
to new masters, brothers came to me because they saw my worried
expression or heard my concern about doing it.
And this represents how Masonry is. Brothers care about each
other. Brothers worry about each other. Brothers help each other. This
small representation of brotherly love and affection can be seen every
Lodge meeting. I have heard so many brothers genuinely concerned about
the health and well-being of a brother and his loved ones. Our Lodge has
an actual Almoner that reaches out to brothers, their widows and orphans
and other members of their family.
We are so blessed to be involved in such an active Lodge where the
brothers sincerely and genuinely care about each other. If you have fallen
away, why don’t you come and see? If you are active, THANK YOU.
Fraternally,
Chip Elliott
Senior Deacon 2018
From The Junior Deacon My Brothers,
It is once again that time of year for us, our busy spring schedule! I hope
to see as many of you as possible at one or more of our spring events such
as Shad Derby Lobster Dinner, Shad Derby Day, Stewards Cookout, Table
Lodge, fundraising dinners etc. One thing I've noticed in my years in the
lodge is somewhat of a lack of brothers participating in these events. I
cannot stress enough how great these types of events outside of the lodge
room are for us, and how much labor it takes to put them on. It is a great
time to meet new brothers and also help out in our community. It's also a
great time to engage our new brothers in fellowship and community
outreach so please let's not forget our newer brothers in the lodge, reach

out to them and invite them to join as sometimes that's all a brother is
looking for is a reason to come out!
It’s been a great year so far serving as your Junior Deacon and I look
forward to the rest of the year and for years to come.
Fraternally,
Kevin Dugdale

From the Senior Steward From the Junior Steward From the Marshal
Happy Spring Brethren,
Although I have only been Marshall for a short while,
I have most certainly received further light in Masonry. We are so often
“inculcated”, as it were, through our Masonic lectures that the journey of
giving and receiving instruction improves ourselves in Masonry. It is
something we hear so often but that I feel can too easily pass in one ear
and out the other. We are to ever reach out, meet upon the level, and
strive to polish that rough “rough Ashlar” of ourselves and our fellow

brothers. For me, at its core, this is what Masonry is about. To bond
together in fellowship, on the level, no matter your station, and grow
together as brothers. It is not enough to just teach it, we must also truly
live it. And when we do, it becomes easier to keep our membership strong
and inspire new generations of Masons to continue our good works.

From the Editor Brethren, Firstly. May I apologize for getting this 2nd issue of the Wayfarer out late. I have no excuse so I offer none, and simply ask your forgiveness. Secondly, thank you to all who have contributed to this issue. All I will say is that whilst it is great to compile the thought and words of our esteemed and professional Officer Corps, it really would be nice to include articles here from ‘lay’ brethren. You don’t have to be an Officer of the Lodge, a Past Master of the Lodge, or even a Master Mason. EVERY Brother can contribute: It’s YOUR magazine, I just compile it. (Late!). If you have something to say about our Lodge, or Masonry in General, this is forum. Just your observation, your thoughts, or even some personal news. The only requirement is that any article must be submitted to our WM for ‘approval’, but unless rude or inflammatory (unlikely knowing how courteous the Brethren of Washington #70 are!), it is almost sure to be included. Come on; surprise me. Who will be the first ‘non-officer’ to contribute this year?
