    WHAT IS WASTE?

Waste includes all items that people no longer have

any use for, which they either intend to get rid of or

have already discarded. Additionally, wastes are such

items which people are require to discard, for exampleby lay because of their hazardous properties. Many

items can be considered as waste e.g., household

rubbish, sewage sludge, wastes from manufacturing

activities, packaging items, discarded cars, oldtelevisions, garden waste, old paint containers etc.

Thus all our daily activities can give rise to a large

variety of different wastes arising from different

    sources.

India is the second most populous country, which has about 16%

of the world population and 25% of the land area.

Rapid industrialization last few decades led to depletion of

    pollution of precious natural.

Rapid industrial developments also led to the generation of huge

quantities of hazardous wastes, which aggravated the

environmental problems in the country by depleting and

    polluting natural resources.

Rational and sustainable utilization of natural resources and itsprotection from toxic releases is vital for sustainable socio-

    economic development.

Hazardous waste management is a new concept for most of the

Asian countries including India. The lack of technical andfinancial resources and the regulatory control for the

management of hazardous wastes in the past had led to the

unscientific disposal of hazardous wastes in India, which posed

serious risks to human, animal and plant life.

    What is Recycling ?

The practice of collecting the waste materials into the

new useable products. This process prevents thewaste of useful materials. Recycling is the process of

re using the given products and producing the new

products from. It means that it is the process where

old goods are re manufactured and transformed intothe new usable products

Recycling is the process that involves the techniques

for creating new materials with the help of wastes and

used stuff .the main reason for the recycling is to

    potentially decrease the inhabitants and

    environmental pollution.

Different types of paper that can be

    recycled

    Cardboard/Paperboard

It is clean card board that can be recycled. It is high qualityand durable material due to which it being recycled into

paperboard but make sure that these cardboards are emptyand dry.

    Newspaper recycling

Newspaper recycling involves the recycling of newspaper tocreate the new newspapers and paper products. The mainthing kept in mind while newspaper recycling is thatnewspaper does not contain any other material such as paint

over it and rubber bands rapped around

    Types of Recycled Plastic

There are several types of petroleum that is refined andrecycled for obtaining the seven types of plastic resin fromdifferent type of petroleum each with the different propertiesand quality.

There are seven types of plastic resin:

    1. Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET),

    2. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE),

    3. Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), 4. Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE),

    5. Polystyrene (PS)

    6. and Other (usually a composite of several previously

    mentioned)

    Recycling Steel, Glass, Aluminium

    Cans, and Foil

Glass, steel, copper, aluminium cans, andother metals are easily recognizable and quiteeasy to recycle.

glass bottles must not be mixed with any othertype of glass like light bulbs, Pyrex plates, glasstableware, auto glass, and window glass.

Aluminium cans should be cleaned just enough toprevent odours and it is no longer necessary to

remove labels for processing. The high heat usedin glass and metal reprocessing is enough to takecare of the problem of contamination.

    Recycle Electronics or E-Recycling

Exporting Our Dirty Problem: USA exports its e-

wasted to countries like India, Pakistan and China

    The Process:

breaking down the equipment into its componentparts

parts are then recycled through various methods

depending on the material Metals, plastics, and glass.

    Recycling Water or Reclaim Water

Water recycling is reusing treated wastewater forbeneficial purposes such as agricultural andlandscape irrigation, industrial processes, toilet

flushing, and replenishing a ground water basin Water recycling offers resource and financial

    savings

Gray water: is re-useable wastewater from

residential, commercial and industrial bathroomsinks, bath tub shower drains, and clotheswashing equipment drains

Gray water is reused onsite, typically for landscape irrigation.

    Uses for Recycled Water

    agriculture

    landscape

    public parks

    golf course irrigation

cooling water for power plants and oil refineries

    processing water for mills, plants

    toilet flushing

    dust control,

    construction activities

    concrete mixing

    artificial lakes

Disadvantages or recycling waste watera) Requires separate factory setups for the recycling process, which results in

more energy consumption and extra cost, transportation and sorting and

cleaning as well as storage expenses

    b) Big truck and big dumpers on the traffic roads irritates the traffic flow. They

collect garbage form different places and interrupt the traffic sequences.

    c) Pollutants are generated even in recycling process which itself has chemicalskews involved

    d) Recycling is not at all cost effective process.

    e) The poor quality items cannot be recycled are dumped in rivers, and big holes

which results in the poisonous affect in the form of contaminated water

resources for the poor maintenance of recycling process are still limited ,

recycling installations also required big land area which becomes infertile

Advantages of recyclinga. Recycling minimizes the use of glass.

    b. Helps in increasing the production of plastic and

    paper.

    c. Removes pollution in the form of garbage

    recycling.

    d. Creates awareness in the people for saving their

    environment.

    e. It minimizes the use of natural resources.

    f. Avoid pollutants from interfering the natural

    processes

    Disadvantages of Recycling

Separate factories must be set up for the

    recycling of materials (pollution, energy

    consumption)

Some recycling is not cost-efficient and

annually results in a net loss

in the process of recycling papers and

plastics, harsh chemicals are used that can

    cause health problems on exposure
