DESCRIPTION

Each household produces 681kg of waste per year. South Australia’s landfills create 60 million cubic metres of landfill airspace. The state is one of the best at recycling and manages to divert 65% recyclable from the landfill. One of the major challenge for recycling is competing with landfills. Cheap landfill costs, disposal contract and global warming are the current crisis issues for waste in South Australia.

The important part of South Australia’s waste management infrastructure are landfills because the waste disposal here has been dominated by these landfills.

Adelaide is served by :

•Southern Waste Depot , Maslin Beach

•Southern Region Disposal Depot , Mclaren Vale

•Integrated Waste Services Balefil, Dublin

•Waste management New Zealand, Inkerman

Waste management New Zealand, Nuriootpa

•Northern Adelaide Waste Management Authority Balefil, Uleybury

These infrastructures provided 60 millions cubic metres of landfill airspace

Major landfills service in Adelaide and small rural landfills received 12.8 million tonnes of solid waste every year.

This is happening because due to low landfill costs, it is more effective to dump rather than recycle.

When the waste is disposed to landfill, we will bury many useful resources and prevent ongoing use of the materials.

It needs a high level of design to ensure the sitting, rehabilitation and management of the landfills.

The operators of the landfills has to encourage the local government and businesses to enter the long-term contracts and set a minimum volume of waste to them.

This again will encourage them to dispose the waste to the landfill instead of recycling.

In landfills, the anaerobic (without oxygen) decomposition of the organic leads to emissions especially methane and also carbon dioxide and nitrous dioxide.

Methane is more effective green house gas than carbon dioxide and has much greater greenhouse effect.

However the amount of the methane depends on the quantity of the waste and the design n management of the landfill site.

Shortage of landfill

In 2004 the disposal from the six landfills licensed to received Adelaide's waste will only meet the Adelaide’s requirement for several decades.

The will be possibilities that Adelaide will has not enough space for landfill sooner than that.

They will need a new landfill and this can create more issues in finding the logistic.

The waste is either recycle within the plant or will be transferred to business that could process the material.

One of the major challenge for recycling is they have to to compete with landfills.

Other problem is low value waste and mixed of waste make it difficult to recover usable materials.

This waste will then be disposed in the cheapest way which is landfill.
