What It Means?

Waste-to-energy technologies convert waste matter into various forms of fuel that can be used to supply energy. Waste feed stocks can include municipal solid waste (MSW),construction and demolition (C&D) debris, agricultural waste such as crop silage and livestock manure, industrial waste from coal mining, lumber mills or other facilities and even the gases that are naturally produced within landfills.

HOW IT WORKS?

Page 8: "waste to energy"

PROS (ADVANTAGES)

It Reduces waste

Reduction in release of GHG (Green House Gas) and toxins into water

No additional fuel required to run the plant as it can support its power requirement

Commercially viable in many countries

Mature Technology

Increase in city sanitation

Support of finance by Govt.

SOME DETAILED STUDIES…..

Odisha approves Nine WTE Projects

The Odisha Government, encourages power generation from waste has given accord to Nine bio-waste based power projects with a combined generation capacity of 90 MW by private developers. The projects are likely to be set up in Raygada, Nawarangpur, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khurda, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Puri districts. The cost per MW of power is expected to be between ₹ 4 crores depending on the location and evacuation facilities.

Contd…..The Sali-Vahana-Green-Energy is planning to set up a 20 MW Waste based

power plant in Dhenkanal. The Satya-Bio-Power-Industry is going to setup a 10 MW plant in Ganjam. The Prasad-Bio-Energy plans to set up a 10 MW unit in Raygada. The Jaylaxmi-Waste-Energy Ltd. is going to set up a 10 MW unit in Nayagarh. The Andhavarapu-Waste-Energy is likely to set up a 10 MW unit in

Nawarangpur. The Sampath-Power-Projects is going to set up a 10 MW in Khurda The Falcon-Green-Energy proposes 10 MW capacity units in Puri.

Page 12: "waste to energy"

Contd…..The waste product of Cuttack city is equal to 150 MT/ per day. In rainy season with water the waste becomes 250MT/per day. Now Cuttack waste is deposited at Chakradharpur (30km from Cuttack). The waste product of Bhubaneswar is dumped near Nandankanan (nearly more than 200 MT/per day). A power plant will be constructed there to generate electricity from wastes which is financed by DFID (Department for International Developement.). In Berhampur at present, around 146 tonnes of solid waste is being generated in the town daily which is dumped at Chandania Hills. There are around 56 dumping points in the town of which 17 are located in main areas. SWMP (Solid Waste Management Project) is going to be constructed at Mohunda.

In DelhiIn Delhi, 5 municipal Authorities are responsible for Municipal solid Waste Generation and Management. Total 8360 TPD (Tonnes Per Day) of MSW (Municipal Solid Waste) generated daily in Delhi. There are 3 landfill sites namely Bhalswa land fill site, Gazipur sanitary land fill site, Okhla sanitary land fill site. Bhalswa Land fill site commissioned in the year 1994, where as Ghazipur in 1984 and Okhla in 1996. These landfill site are not designed as per the schedule 3 of the MSW rules. In absence of availability of landfill sites, all the 5 Muncipal Bodies are using these three sites for illegal disposal of MSW.

New plant to generate power in Madhya Pradesh

The Madhya Pradesh Govt. has decided to set up a plant to generate eco-friendly power from waste and produce organic fertilizer on 50 acre land at Bandha village in Satna district under Solid Waste Management Scheme. The urban development and environment departments are finalizing the cluster-based project. The waste from Rewa and Satna urban bodies will be brought to the plant for producing energy and organic fertilizers.

Visakhapatnam identifies land For Solid Waste Management Project

The civic authorities of the Visakhapatnam city have identified a land for the establishment of a Solid Waste Management Project at Thangudupalle area of the city.

About 50 acre of land would be allotted for the waste disposal machinery and around 900 to 950 tonne of waste could generate 12 to 15 MW of energy through this project.

The project is expected to be completed within year-and-a-half. Project cost is estimated to be 10 crores.

National Green Tribunal clears NMC's Solid Waste Project

National Green Tribunal (NGT), western zone bench, has cleared Nagpur Municipal Corporation's (NMC's) solid waste to electricity project.

NMC had earlier appointed Hanjer, which failed to execute the project as per the terms laid by NGT. On directives of NGT, it then appointed Essel Infrastructure. NGT has directed Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to monitor the project.

The 11 MW project will be sent to the standing committee for clearance.

Waste-to-energy plants to set up under Swachh Bharat Mission

Around six waste-to-energy plants will set up under Swachh Bharat Mission.Around 74 MW has been commissioned including two in Delhi i.e. a waste-to-energy plant at Ghazipur to produce 12 MW power by processing 2,000 tonne waste per day and another plant will be commissioned at Narela-Bawana to generate 24 MW power from waste. There will be two waste-to-energy plants producing 11 MW each in Jabalpur and Hyderabad, besides a 12.6 MW plant at Nalgonda in Telangana and 9 MW plant in Chennai. These will be commissioned next year.
