Problem Statement

What options are there for school-leavers during these tough economic times ?

“As we are well aware, unemployment at present is at an all time high in South Africa. The latest

statistic is that 40% of our youth are unemployed. Michael Bagraim of the Cape Chamber of

Commerce mentioned that since the recession began, 1 000 000 jobs have been lost in South Africa.

Economists’ predictions of the short term performance of the worlds’ economy is also not painting a

positive outlook. The resulting effect of such predictions is a lack of investment and opportunity for

employment in the “developing countries”. The future seems bleak to say the least.

The question that should be asked is “What options do school leavers have available to them in these

times ?”. There are few employment opportunities and access to finance to further their education is

difficult to secure. As a young South African, this is not a good time to go out into the real world.

In addition to this, the question is whether the current school curriculum prepares school leavers to

manage and ultimately survive when they leave school. Recent articles published suggest that the

answer is no. Some interactions with learners have shown us that they do not even know how to

open a bank account.

For a young South African, completing your school career often brings with it new challenges. Going

in search of employment or deciding to further your education are two decisions that South African

youth deal with on a daily basis.

What options do these individuals have to better their and their communities’ circumstances ?”

Although the above introduction or problem statement as it is referred to gives one the impression

that we are facing difficult times ahead, the future is not as bleak as it seems. We have in our society

innovators, workers, disciplined and gifted individuals who unfortunately do not have access to a

platform that will allow them to make a difference in their communities.

So what is the solution to this Problem Statement ?

Entrepreneurship is the solution.

Entrepreneurship and self-employment is the most viable option at the moment. As an

Entrepreneur, I am fully aware of the opportunities that are out there. Every day I come across new

ventures and opportunities to generate an income. During tough economic times like we are

experiencing at the moment, it is the Entrepreneur who adapts and survives and in the end makes a

living.

Entrepreneurship is key to the revitalisation and growth of our economy. How does

Entrepreneurship become a key driver for economic development when, as mentioned above,

school leavers of today do not even know how to open a bank account ? The answer is to provide

them with the opportunity to empower themselves through learning. Knowledge is key and business

knowledge is the door that knowledge unlocks.

Training learners in Entrepreneurship and the Basic Principles of Business Management will

empower school leavers to adapt and survive by giving them the tools to start up and sustain their

own business. It is about developing their ability to identify an opportunity and turn the idea into a

business that generates revenue. This is real entrepreneurship, training learners to do, to

implement, to turn their ideas into reality and in turn generate an income from it. This is what true

Entrepreneurs thrive on – seeing their idea turned into reality.

At Water Berry we are currently rolling out our pilot School Entrepreneurship Programme at a High

School in Cape Town. It has been a great success in that the feedback we have received from those

learners on the programme has been extremely positive.

About the Water Berry School Entrepreneurship Programme

As mentioned earlier in this proposal, Water Berry is currently rolling out its pilot School

Entrepreneurship Programme at SACS High School in Newlands. Alexander McLeod is a SACS Old Boy

and member of the SACS Old Boys Union. His relationship with the school is what afforded him the

opportunity to pilot his School Entrepreneurship Programme at SACS.

The programme has been a tremendous success with learners constantly giving positive feedback

about the programme. Some learners have indicated that they will make themselves available as

The School Entrepreneurship Programme aims to deliver a programme that introduces learners at

schools to the fundamentals of starting up and running your own business. We introduce learners to

the following modules, which we consider, to be fundamental elements of Entrepreneurship:

SARS, Bank Accounts and the CIPC – Registering your business

Marketing

Innovation and Idea Generation

Introduction to an Entrepreneur’s behaviours, mindsets and what Entrepreneurship is all

about

Finance – Proposal Writing, Fund Raising and Access to Finance

The Business Plan

In addition to the theory element of the programme, we also encourage the learners to undertake a

practical assignment. The practical assignment requires the learners to develop a product or service

that they can market and sell easily to members of the community or school. The aim of the practical

is to allow learners to start experiencing the real world aspect of business. Alexander McLeod,

programme facilitator, will serve as the learners’ mentor for the practical assignment offering

guidance and advice on how to implement, where to market and how to be innovative in your

approach to business.

Water Berry School Entrepreneurship Programme Structure

The programme is modular in that the learners will work through 5 modules, when completing the

programme. Each module will include the following:

Alexander McLeod has facilitated in excess of 20 workshops (in 2011 alone) in business training for

small businesses. Couple this with the roll out of his pilot School Entrepreneurship Programme, his

experience in facilitation and educating learners and business owners is extensive.

The theory lectures are interactive and encourages the learners to discuss topics to gain a thorough

understanding of the material. In most cases, real life and practical examples are provided to ensure

the learners can relate to the material. The interaction also builds on the learners’ confidence to talk

in public and view the opinions.

Additional Reading

The learners’ will be given various reading assignments. The additional reading material will be

related directly to Entrepreneurship.

At the outset of the programme, the learners will have a choice to be presented with a copy of

either the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers”, a book written by Sean Covey or a copy of “Rich

Dad, Poor Dad” written by Robert Kiyosaki. Both books are a must read for any learner interested in

business.

The reason that the Sean Covey book is presented to the learners is that, as at this current point in

time, Alexander McLeod is not an Accredited Franklin Covey Facilitator. This means that he is not

in a position to lecture on this subject matter. The subject matter in the book will be discussed in

class and the learners will be required to share their views on the principles. This allows any

copyright infringements to be avoided while at the same time exposes the learners to these vital

habits.

Practical Assignment

Learners on the programme are given the option of participating in the practical assignment. At the

outset of the programme, Alexander McLeod informs the learners that all Entrepreneurs have a

social responsibility as well. They have to give back to their communities or to a worthy cause.

The practical assignment encourages the learners to develop a product or service offering that they

can make available to the market. The assignment will be classified under the informal sector and in

turn will allow the learner to generate revenue without having to formally register any legal entity.

Any profits generated will have to be split between the learner and donation(s) to a worthy cause(s).

On the current pilot School Entrepreneurship Programme, the beneficiary is Breast Cancer

Awareness charities. Only 4 learners have opted to participate in the practical assignment. After the

programme, we will hand over a portion of any profits made by these learners.

Modules

The programme covers 5 modules only. These modules are the fundamental elements for

Entrepreneurship. You will notice that management activities such as Human Resource Management

and Business Administration have been excluded from the programme. The reason for this is that

Entrepreneurs always spend too much time on these elements and therefore neglect the reason

they are business – to turn their idea into a revenue generating business. Entrepreneurship is all

about being proactive and doing. Most business owners, the 8 out of 10 that fail within 2 years, are

the business owners that spend too much of their time on administration and neglect to develop

their product/service and get it out to market.

Costs

The cost for a learner to attend the programme is R 300.00(ZAR) per module or R 1500.00(ZAR) for

the entire programme. For this amount, the learner will receive the following:

1. Branded file with all course material

2. Book and branded pen

3. 1 x copy of “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” OR 1 x Copy of “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers”

4. Facilitation and training in Entrepreneurship

5. Mentorship – for those learners opting to participate in the practical assignment

The above mentioned cost is not for the school to incur. As this programme does not form part of

the school curriculum, it will need to be paid for by the learner.

Programme Schedule

A full programme calendar is provided to the learners who register for the programme. The

programme will be run over an 8 month period commencing in January 2012 and running through

until August 2012. The reason for the lengthy duration is that we have taken school and public

holidays into account.

The learners will be required to attend two 1.5 hour lectures a month. The lectures will take place

every two weeks.

The programme will be run after hours from 3:30pm to 5:00pm unless the school times require the

programme to run at a different time of the day.

Registering for the School Entrepreneurship

Programme

If learners are interested in participating in the School Entrepreneurship Programme, the attached

registration form will need to be completed. The monthly programme cost is due on the 1st day of

each module for the duration of the programme. Money is payable by way of EFT or in cash at the

first session of each module.

Learners will be required to sign on for the entire programme. The programme has been designed

in a manner that requires the learner to work through all modules. All modules are inter-linked

and follow on from one another. Missing one module is not recommended.

Should you wish to sign up for the School Entrepreneurship Programme, you will be required to

pay a deposit equivalent to the fee for the first module. This amount is R 300.00(ZAR). This deposit

will also cover your cost for the first module. The deposit is required so as to ensure that we do

not incur unnecessary expenses for those learners who register and then do not arrive to

complete the programme. We have costs for setup of course manuals, purchasing of copies of the

two recommended books and additional administration costs.

Once you have submitted the registration form we will notify of when payment for the first

module, or the entire programme, can be made. We will also issue you with a programme

registration number which must be used as a reference.

Once you have signed up you will be liable for the cost of the entire programme irrespective of

whether you drop out or are unable to complete. Consideration will be given for valid reasons

provided.
