Meeting
28 April 2014 Venue: Resource Centre
Time: 7:30pm
Tea & Coffee available
Dear Parents and Carers,
We hope that the return to school finds you all
dry and safe after the holidays despite Ita’s
efforts up and down the coast. Rain – great for
crops in small amounts but not good at all for
fishing.
For the next few weeks, Ms MacDonald will be
on leave and Ms Battaglini will be Acting
Principal. Ms Mudie will then backfill the
position of Acting Deputy Principal. We wish Ms
MacDonald all the best whilst she is on leave.
The last Friday of the last term was incredibly
busy. First, we had the Ingham State School
Cross Country. All students who participated did
a wonderful job. It wasn’t an easy course to run,
as well as being a very hot day. During the
afternoon session, Ms Regazzoli and her team
had readied the Multipurpose Hall for our
ANZAC Parade. It was a very solemn occasion
with all students on their best behaviour in front
of a range of VIPs. These included Mr Bill
Morganson, Pastor Viv Chapman, a
representative from the RSL, Councillor Rodger
Bow and Mrs Bow and Mr Piotto, the bugler,
who performed the Last Post and the Rouse.
Year 6 and 7 students ably assisted throughout
the parade.
The Interschool Cross Country, in which we
compete against other primary schools in the
area, will be held on Friday, 9 May. Competing
students from Ingham State School will be
notified shortly, so keep up the training for long
distance running.
Term 2 After School Sport – soccer, netball and
touch football – will begin during Week 3.
There is NO COST for students to participate
in the sessions.
They will be supervised by teachers.
Each sport will run for 7 weeks.
Up to 24 students will be able to participate in each sport. Forms are available from the Office.
Just a reminder: Eleanor St is a PICK UP and
DROP OFF zone. No parking is allowed. For the
safety of our students, the Police will be
contacted with the details of anyone leaving
their vehicle parked in this area. We thank you
for your co-operation.
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and
Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests will be held across
Australia on 13, 14 and 15 May. It is essential
that every effort be made to ensure all eligible
students attend during this time and do not
arrive at school late. Students in Years 3, 5 and
7 will be participating in NAPLAN tests focussing
on Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar and
Punctuation, and Numeracy. Thanks to whole-
school foci like Question-Answer Relationships
(QAR), writing a range of text types, analysing
the language involved in maths, as well as
diligent teachers, our students have been
working very hard on learning strategies,
problem-solving skills, and understandings that
should assist them when they take the actual
tests. In preparation for the tests, students are
encouraged to ensure that they are well rested
the night before each test, eat a healthy
breakfast on the morning of each test, and also
bring healthy snacks and lunch to school.
As part of the school uniform, all students are
required to wear a sunsafe hat. These are
available from the School Office, cost $10. Once
purchased, we encourage that the student’s
name is written inside with a permanent pen.
Hats should then be kept in bags unless worn on
the child’s head. No sharing or borrowing of hats
is permitted – even between siblings.

TALKING TUCKSHOP
I hope everyone has had an enjoyable holiday and are pleased to be returning to school.
This week is only three days and tuckshop will be operating as normal.
Wednesday Special—Hamburgers Thursday Special—Spaghetti Cups
Tuckshop Orders All tuckshop orders must be posted in the tuckshop post box by 8:45am each morning. Orders that come in very late may not be accepted so to avoid disappointment be on time for school and post orders by 8:45am.
Please remember to pack sufficient lunch for both Big Lunch and Afternoon Tea when bringing lunch from home as some students have a habit of eating everything at Big Lunch and at Afternoon Tea come to the Tuckshop saying they are hungry and have nothing left in their lunch boxes. When packing Yoghurt sticks in lunch boxes it is a good idea to freeze before placing in the lunch box with a frozen block.
Extra volunteers are always needed at tuckshop.
Do you have a simple but nutritious food idea that could be added to the Afternoon Tea Menu? I would like students to write down any ideas they have and bring them to me at the tuckshop.
Quiz: What is the remaining part of this slogan ‘Go for ………”? First student in the door with the correct answer wins the prize.
Thank you for your help and cooperation. Mrs Byers—Tuckshop Convenor

News from the sports desk…
We have decided to take up a fantastic offer from Queensland Cricket. Simon Edge the Participation Officer for the North Queensland region will be visiting our school and offering our students the experience of undertaking either a Milo In-2-Cricket session (P-yr3/4) or a T20 Blast skills session (yr 4/5-7). The following links outline both programs and provide information about the activities undertaken during a session. Milo In-2-Cricket program: In-2-Cricket Activities Video’s and the T20 Blast: T20 Blast School e-Book. Simon is really looking to use the sessions to give the kids a taste of the In-2-Cricket (P-yr 3/4) and T20 Blast (yr 4/5-7) programs. The sessions typically involve a couple of activities based on the student age level and then finish with a quick game at the end. The sessions are not overly long usually lasting around 45 minutes to 1 hour maximum per class. The two week program will be run with as many available classes across the entire school cohort in week two and week three.
