Discovering New Things Likah loves discovering new things. Likah discovers new friends and new adventures every day!

It’s wonderful to discover new things! But sometimes when we don’t know what new things are, it can be a little scary. It happens to everyone! It happened to Likah too.

One day on her walk she saw something she never saw before. It scared her. She was scared because she just didn’t know what it was. She touched it with her paw and her paw was cold and wet! Just like when she put her paw in her water bowl! (Which she loves to do.) But this was different! It looked like a very, very big water bowl!!! She did not want to go ANY FARTHER!!!

What do you think the big water bowl really was?

Well, she found herself in the big water bowl! It was a puddle! And she loved it!!!

Discovery Thoughts

• When do you find puddles outside? • What does a puddle feel like? Is it dry? Is it wet? • What are some things we can find in a puddle? • What is a ripple? How can you make a ripple in the puddle? • Do you remember discovering a puddle for the first time? • Can you tell a story about discovering the puddle?

This Week’s New Discoveries

• Name two new foods that you tried this week. • Name five new words that you learned in school this week. • Name something else you ”discovered” this week.

NEW THOUGHT!

When we try new things we can discover how wonderful they are!!!

What is a puddle? A puddle is a small amount of water usually formed during rainstorms.

Puddles are small enough to step over and shallow enough to walk through.

PUDDLES!

Adventures can lie in a puddle!

Pull on some rubber boots and find some puddles!

• Take some sidewalk chalk and dip into a sidewalk puddle for some very vivid colors! Draw some amazing puddle creatures! You can even draw a whole storybook with the puddle creatures!

• Splash in a big puddle. Draw how far the drops of water fly depending on how hard they splash, discussing the distance and height. Introduce new words such as saturate. Talk about the feelings children experience as they splash freely.

• Float feathers, leaves and bits of string in the water. Predict which objects will float and which will sink. Chart the findings.

• Blow on a puddle with a straw. Watch the ripples move across the puddle. Talk about air flow and how it can move things even without being visible.

• Drop pebbles in a puddle and listen to the sounds they make. Another opportunity to introduce new and descriptive words.

• Listen to the rain drops hit the water. Once inside, make a rain stick. Find a paper roll. Cover one end with wax paper. Measure 1/4 cup of rice. Pour into the tube. Cover the other end to keep rice contained. Decorate. Shake. Try to replicated the sound of rain.

• Set up a mud kitchen. Create rain cakes and mud pies. Find a few spring flowers to add to the mix for a perfect dining experience.

• Take measuring cups and spoons out to the puddle. Experiment with measuring. How many 1/2 cups can be poured into 1 cup? How many tablespoons can fit in a 1/4 cup? If you have a balance scale, compare the weight of 1 cup of water to 1 cup of mud. Compare 1 cup of wet leaves to 1 cup of broken sticks. Measuring and comparing are important math skills.

• Look in the puddle when the water is still. Do you see insects? Insects that can often be found near puddles. If in doubt, wear insect repellent. If you are lucky you may see certain insects that are able to walk on water!

• Use a stick to write numbers, letters, or words in soft mud surrounding the puddle. For youngest learners, begin with writing the first letter of the child's first name. From the first letter, move to the whole name.

• Are there object floating on the puddle's surface? Are there objects around the puddle? Count objects. Are there more objects in the puddle or on the edge?

Muddy puddles, deep puddles,

shallow puddles!

They are not just sources of

splashing and playing but so

much learning too!
