Leading Achievements

• 1940: The McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research founded on University of Wisconsin-Madison campus under the direction of Harold Rusch, MD.

• 1973: UWCCC established as one of the first university-based comprehensive cancer centers by the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Harold Rusch named the first UWCCC director.

• 1978-97: Paul P. Carbone, MD served as director of the UWCCC.

• 1989: UWCCC began regional cancer partnerships with hospitals throughout Wisconsin.

• 1997: John Niederhuber, MD named director. Among his major accomplishments was the merger of the UWCCC with the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research.

• 1998: The Wisconsin Oncology Network established to include community hospitals in UWCCC clinical trials.

• 2004: George Wilding, MD named UWCCC director.

• 2005: Ground broken on Wisconsin Institutes for Medical Research (WIMR).

• 2006: Cancer Center is renamed the University of Wisconsin Carbone Cancer Center. The Cancer Center’s central research tower is named the Harold P. Rusch Translational Research Tower.

• 2006: UWCCC plays an important role in getting a bill passed in the Wisconsin Legislature which requires insurance companies to pay for routine care costs associated with cancer clinical trials.

• 2008: WIMR, focusing on translational research, opens in fall.

Multidisciplinary Cancer ClinicsThe UWCCC’s strength continues to lie in its “multidisciplinary” cancer clinics, where a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeon and other specialists work together in determining the best possible treatment for each patient. These clinics incorporate several disciplines to enhance patient care, including outstanding nursing, genetic counseling, social work, pathology, radiology, psychology and dietary evaluation.

The multidisciplinary cancer clinics include:

• Bone Marrow Transplant• Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors• Breast cancer• Esophageal cancer• Gastrointestinal cancer• Gynecologic cancer• Head and neck cancer• Lung cancer• Melanoma• Pediatric hematology and oncology• Sarcoma• Urologic cancer

Clinical TrialsClinical trials – testing promising new treatments – are among UWCCC’s greatest strengths. These research studies uncover answers to specific scientific questions about new ways to prevent, diagnose, detect and treat cancer and offer patients access to state-of-the-art therapies.

More than 250 clinical trials are available for patient enrollment at the UWCCC each year. For more information, contact Cancer Connect, (800) 622-8922. A complete listing of all clinical trials is also available at uwhealth.org/cancer.

Support Services The UWCCC offers a number of support services for cancer patients and family members:

• Cancer Connect, a toll-free phone service (see description below)

• Nutritional services• Genetic counseling• Social work• Oncology-specific psychology services• Certified pet visitation• Art therapy• Movement therapy classes• Patient library and education rooms• Disease-specific support groups• Integrative medicine, including healing touch and

acupuncture• Palliative care, including a specialized palliative care unit• Free wigs, turbans and scarves for patients• CareWear, a specialty store with products for individuals who
