Safety Center More than a store… an educational center

Preventable injuries including those from falls,

car crashes, burns, suffocation and poisoning are

a leading cause of emergency department visits

for children from the time they are born through

their teenage years.

Most of these injuries can be prevented with the

correct and consistent use of safety products

such as bicycle helmets, car seats and life

jackets, and by following best practice recommendations including children riding in the

back seat until age 13 and keeping medications locked up in a secure location.

The Safety Center at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, WI

was created to improve the health and well-being of kids and caregivers by offering safety

products and individualized prevention education.

Staffed by knowledgeable and experienced safety experts, we offer personal education and

one-stop shopping for the products you need to keep your family safe, with prices at or

below online and traditional retailers. 100% of proceeds are reinvested in our injury

prevention education and outreach initiatives.

While our store is closed to visitors during this time of social distancing, we are pleased to

offer our line of car seats, bike helmets and home safety products for purchase via phone

with contactless pickup at our Kids Safety Education Center in Fitchburg. Our Safety Team is

here to consult with you to answer any safety questions you have, and help you choose the

products that best meet your needs. We are also available for virtual consultations should

you need remote assistance with installing your car seats.

Infant Car Seats Safety Center

Infant Car Seats are designed for the littlest passengers, with most having upper weight limits between 22 and

35 lbs. They are used only rear-facing in vehicles, and can be used to carry the infant when outside of the vehicle; how-

ever, it is recommended that you limit the use of your infant car seat outside of the vehicle to short periods of time,

and always keep your child buckled up in the harness.




• Keep your child rear facing as long as possible, until the age of 2 or when your child reaches the height or weight limit the manufacturer of your car seat has set. There should be 1 inch or more of space between the top of your child’s head and the top of the car seat.

• Harness straps should be positioned at or below your child’s shoulders. • Harness should be snug. When the harness is pinched, there should be no slack. • Place the car seat chest clip at the child’s armpit level. • If the car seat has inserts, remove as required by the manufacturer’s weight limit. • Car seats should never be used as an alternative sleep location. If your child is sleeping when

you reach your destination, take them out of their car seat and place in a crib, pack ‘n play or other safe sleep environment to finish sleeping.

• Never place a car seat on top of shopping carts. This could cause injuries if the shopping cart or cart or car seat tips or falls.

All-in-One car seats are designed for use from birth through some part of booster seat use. The benefit of an All-

Transporting Children with Special Healthcare Needs

• Keep infants and toddlers rear-facing as long as possible. The Safety Center has some car seats that allow you to keep your child rear-facing up to 50 lbs.

• Then, keep your kids in a harnessed car seat as long as possible. A five-point harness is the

safest way for your child to ride, in some car seats up to 65 lbs. • Then, keep your kids in booster seats until the seat belt fits them correctly without a booster,

with seat belt low over the hips and shoulder belt across center of shoulder. Most children will not fit in the adult seat belt until they are at least 57 inches (4’9”) in height, which might not be until age 10 or older for some kids.

• Then, continue to keep your kids in the back seat until they turn 13. That’s when most kids

reach the point of development when deploying front airbags are not a danger if they are properly restrained.

Harnessed Booster Car Seats Safety Center

Harnessed booster car seats are designed for older toddlers who are riding forward-facing. They are also

referred to as combination seats, because they have a 5-point harness and can later be used without the harness to

correctly position the vehicle lap and shoulder belt. Kids should ride in a 5-point harness as long as possible before

transitioning to a belt-positioning booster, at least until 4 years and 40 lbs. Then, kids should ride in a belt-positioning

booster until the seat belt fits correctly without one, usually when the child is at least 57 inches (4’9”) tall.

Hardware-mounted gates are held in place by mounts that are secured with screws to walls, door

frames or other structures. Hardware-mounted gates are recommended for use at tops of stairways and landings

because they are able to withstand more pushing force against them compared to pressure-mounted gates.

Hardware-mounted gates can also be used in any other area where security of the gate is important.

Pressure-mounted gates are held in place by pressure that is created by adjusting the width of a gate

using the tensioner provided with the gate. This type of gate can be used in between rooms or areas on the same

level, and at the bottom of stairways or landings. Because tension, which holds this type of gate in place, can release

over time due to force applied to the gate, pressure-mounted gates are not recommended for use at top of stairways

Safety Center

Safety in and around water is important for everyone, and it starts with wearing Coast Guard-

approved life jackets on boats, around open bodies of water and when participating in water sports. A life jacket

must fit correctly for it to be effective. For children, make sure the fit is snug. Have the child make a “touchdown”

signal by raising both arms straight up; if the life jacket hits the child’s chin or ears, it may be too big or the straps

may be too loose.
