Term 3 Week 3 Friday, 10 August 2018
Education Week Open Day Education Week Thanks Our Open Day celebration was held today and it was wonderful to see so many people visiting our school and sharing the day with our students. The busy program included assemblies, dance performances and open classrooms. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank the students for their outstanding contributions on the day and their excellent behaviour. Thank you to all staff for your efforts in preparing items and showcasing our school in such a positive light. A huge thank you to MrsKylie Farah and her team for operating the hugely successful book fair. The book fair required a great deal of liaising leading up to the day, preparation the night before and a huge commitment on the day. The generosity of our school community culminated with sales close to $17,000 of which the school receives a commission. Thank you to the families that donated books to our school library. Your generosity of spirit is much appreciated. Once again it was the terrific team work amongst all staff that was apparent and reflected in the enthusiasm of all our students. Congratulations to all concerned. A special mention to Mrs Foreshew, our Deputy Principal, for her outstanding hosting and coordination of our assembly.

Special Swimming Scheme Reminder A reminder that the Special Swimming Scheme is scheduled to commence on Monday 20/8/18 to Friday 24/8/18 (Week 5). Permission notes have been distributed to all students in Years 2 to 6. There are 10 places left for participation in this excellent and valuable program. The venue will once again be at the Whitlam Leisure Centre. Mind Marathon Champions
Last Wednesday, four teams of Year 5 and 6
students along with Mrs Robinson ventured off
to East Hills Boys High School to compete in the
Primary Schools Mind Marathon competition. The
day was extremely challenging and involved each
team completing a range of challenges in the
areas of Mathematics, English, Science,
History/Geography, Engineering and General
Knowledge. Our teams were well prepared and
all worked collaboratively for the best of their
teams.
We are extremely excited to announce that our
Year 6 girls were the overall CHAMPIONS of the
day! This a wonderful achievement as they were
up against stiff competition from a total of 32

teams registered. Well done Mrs Robinson and
the Mind Marathon teams!
Cantabile Choir Mr Blanch and the Cantabile Choir enjoyed their first major rehearsal last Thursday at the Sydney Congress Hall in preparation for their performance on Thursday 30th August at the Sydney Opera House.
We look forward to the students experiencing this amazing opportunity.
First P&C Meeting for Term 3 Our next P&C meeting is Wednesday 15 August @ 7pm in the Admin building. We would love to see you there. Enrolments 2019 It is that time of year again where the school has to start planning for next year. Next week we have to send in ‘anticipated’ enrolment numbers for 2019 to the Department of Education. It is extremely important we have accurate information about enrolment numbers for 2019, as these impact on staffing levels, the number of classrooms we require, the number of spaces we may have for out of area enrolment applications and the general organisation of the classes we will have. To this end I ask that anyone who knows that their children won’t be at Wattle Grove next year or families, who have a child to start kindergarten in 2019, please contact the school office with your details. If new people move into your street please encourage them to contact us here at school if they have primary school aged children.

Postings As you know it is posting time again. Many of you would already know if you will be moving at the end of the year. Please make sure you contact the office/classroom teacher and DSTA to inform of students last day of school and where you will be moving to. This information is much appreciated by the school for further planning. Education Assistance Scheme DCO provides a range of services and resources for Defence children, to assist with the transition between schools and education systems when a member is posted within Australia, and to provide support for the unique needs of Defence students. Defence may reimburse fees for educational services external to the school. Students may be entitled to up to 14 weeks of tutoring in any subject that has been recommended by the school principal or the child’s teacher. This applies to primary and secondary students, within the first 18 months of commencing at the new school. Deployments and Absence Please make sure you let your child/ren’s classroom teacher or I know if a member of your family is away for an extended period of time. Having this knowledge will go towards supporting the student/s at school throughout the absence period.

Presentation Night - 2018 Based on Survey results of both community and staff the following decisions have been made by the
Presentation Night Committee.
Keep- • 4 Stage separate presentation nights (This will be reviewed at the end of this year)
• Photo Slide show – Slightly different format, each student will have one large photo/slide, the slide show will be played on repeat while parents are entering the hall before the official part of the evening begins.
• Items – Only one item per grade per presentation. School dance group will perform at Stage 2 night, School Spec K-2 at Stage 1 and School Spec 3-6 at Stage 3 presentation nights. As many kids on stage as possible to maximise view of performers.
• Award winners will not be notified of the awards they are receiving.
Change- • 5 awards will be given per class – Academic, Improvement, Citizenship and 2 free choice.
• There will be 1 Major Improvement award per grade. Support staff can also nominate children for this award.
• Stage coordinator to do a speech on behalf of Stage and no individual teacher speeches.
Chuck- • Sport/class award/medallions will be removed.
• STLA/EALD/Library/Reading Recovery Awards will not be given. These teachers can discuss nominees with class teachers who can incorporate an award into their class allocation.
• 40 Merits will not be represented.
• Kindergarten students will not have graduation hats.
• Public Speaking awards will be presented following competition time not at Presentation Night.
Add- • Every grade will now have a major Wattle Award.
• We will add a description/explanation of the major awards and explain why the student is receiving the award.
• We will investigate Officeworks vouchers instead of book vouchers for major awards.
