What is a Wave Attenuator?A wave attenuator is a floating devicedesigned to greatly reduce wave energyfrom the exposed side to the protectedside. Wave attenuators help createcomfortable moorage conditions, protecting against natural, wind-bornewaves and boat or ship wakes.

Fixed structures, such as rubble moundbreakwaters and sea walls, are high incost and may have negative effects onthe environment. In many cases, theyare impractical due to water depth andother factors. For all these and otherreasons, the floating wave attenuator isthe perfect answer for many marinas.

Wave DynamicsWaves are measured by height, lengthand period (see diagram). Engineersare interested in the average of thehighest 1% (H1) and/or the average ofthe highest 1/3 (Hs) of the waves duringa design storm event. Height and periodare determinators of the energy to bemanaged, and wave length is also animportant consideration in the design.

Determining wave effects in a basin orharbor is not a simple matter. Waveseffects accumulate, and may reflect, orbounce off, nearby land masses andstructures. In addition, waves changetheir dynamics as they impact shallowwater. Waves can also defract, whichis to say they can bend around cornersto some extent. Mass, breadth, depthand configuration are design factorsimportant to developing an effectivewave attenuator.

The Right Solution for Your MarinaWith site-specific design, BellinghamMarine is able to offer the right waveattenuator for your situation. That is whyyour system will not under-perform norwill it wastefully cost too much becauseit is overbuilt for the purpose.

Wave attenuators from BellinghamMarine serve many dual-purpose

functions, such asvisitor docks, fueldocks, and otheruses. Whilespeciallydesigned, particularly belowthe water, theyare similar inappearance to

other floats in the marinas they protect. They require no special maintenanceprocedures, contributing to the low costof ownership.

Our wave attenuators are designedespecially for your marina by the mostexperienced engineering experts in theworld in this discipline. The superiorperformance of our Unifloat® WaveAttenuators in every kind of applicationis your assurance of quality, durabilityand effectiveness.

Boaters in marinas around theworld are enjoying comfortableconditions in their slips thanksto a Bellingham MarineWave Attenuator.

As with anything to do withweather phenomenon, the studyand practice of controlling theenergy in waves did not lend itselfto simple and elegant mathematicalunderstanding. It is an art and ascience that is gradually, over time, becoming better understood.

The process of quantifying waveattenuation dynamics started inearnest more than 25 years ago, whenthe U.S. Army Corps of Engineersturned to Bellingham Marine to makethe prototype wave attenuators for anew study. From that effort the firstpractical empirical test data began tobe collected.

From that beginning, BellinghamMarine has continued its collaborationwith the leading engineers in the field.Together we were able to build onthat body of knowledge and developthe most durable and effectivewave attenuator systems in theworld. Today, Bellingham MarineWave Attenuators are ceaselesslyat work from Alaska to Australia andfrom Maine to Florida with animpeccable record for durabilityand cost-effective results.

When planning and engineering waveattenuation, there is no substitute forexperience. Wave attenuation by cost-effective flotation devices has had only

a quarter of a century of practical andtheoretical experience. By contrast, the science of seismic engineering –protecting buildings from earthquakedamage – is approaching 100 yearsold and new information is learned inevery significant earthquake.

No other company has the engineeringresources and the comprehensiveknowledge of marina design andconstruction to compare withBellingham Marine. We designyour wave attenuator through aprocess called Site-SpecificEngineering, and our record is proofof its value.

Our wave attenuators are not one-size-fits-all products. We employmarine engineering, meteorology, geology, basin and river ecology andstructural and civil engineering toengineer a system to exactly fit yourneeds, your desired risk levels, andyour budget. And we help you getthrough the arduous permittingprocess always attendant toshoreline development.

Site-Specific EngineeringWind, wave and topography are analyzed todetermine the optimum design for each site. In thisexample from Vancouver, Canada, a specialrequirement for a three-part system presented aunique challenge. By careful analysis of the harborand weather patterns, Bellingham Marine developeda solution in which the individual segments areangled to the weather and act as a unit.
