The Unexpected My mother called to secure vacation dates for this summer. Every other year

Steven and I spend two weeks’ vacation with my family. We might fly to

meet them and spend a few days in sunny Southern California, then travel as

a group somewhere. We spent a week on a houseboat on Lake Shasta. We

spent a week in Sedona, Arizona. Once they drove east and we spent a week

in the Berkshires of Massachusetts. This is all possible because my parents

own and graciously share their time share.

This year we requested vacation be in July as Steven has Vacation Bible

School commitments and we both have summer weddings on the calendar. So last night Mom calls and

says we have a week in Klamath Falls, Oregon. It’s beautiful country, near Crater Lake, with rafting

opportunities on the Klamath River. Sounds great but the dates are late July into August! Not what we

expected. Not what we requested. We have to adjust schedules to make this happen – but it’s the only

week available at that site.

What do we do with the unexpected? We can reject it or insist on having our way, but neither is helpful.

We must adjust to the unexpected. We must be flexible. The people of Israel expected a strong and

mighty king to drive out their enemies. They got a baby. After they adjusted to his way of teaching and

preaching and revealing the Kingdom of God, he was killed. Again – not what they expected. But they

were told they already had all they’d ever need – and anything else would be provided by the Spirit.

What do we do with the unexpected? We adjust. Wayside has been breaking new ground and adjusting

since Pastor Dave retired almost 18 months ago. There have been changes on Session and in the Staff.

There are always changes. We may not receive what we expect or even want. But that doesn’t mean that

change happens outside of your influence. You do have a say in Wayside’s future. You are an important

part of the adjustments that Wayside makes.

Wayside has a Session that is responsible for the direction the church is taking. As you know, there was a

Mission Study group that studied and collated facts about Wayside. Then we elected a Pastor Nominating

Committee. This group completed the Church Information Form – a resume used to describe the church

and solicit applicants. Wayside is still ―a work in progress.‖ You are invited to bring your concerns and

questions to the Session and/or Pastor Amy. We have installed suggestion boxes outside of the office so

you can submit input to committees. I am available to hear your concerns. The joy of being a Presbyterian

(yes, there are joys to being Presbyterian!) is having a say, having a vote, and being heard. The outcome

may not be what you expected – it might be better than you ever imagined!

Peace,

St. Stephen's Ministers

One on one. One to one. One with one.

Confidentially.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

A reason to celebrate and rejoice. A chance to begin again. An opportunity for hope that things can be

different this time around.

But these NEW years seem to quickly speed by faster and faster. They also are starting to all look

suspiciously like 'old' years just repeating themselves in an endless loop.

'New' is hard. Anything really new and being tried for the first time ( making an apple pie, hammering a nail,

starting a conversation with a stranger, wearing new shoes, etc.) is awkward and embarrassing and strange

and unfamiliar. Even worse; anything new and being done for the first time is apt to be done poorly; or

wrong and clumsily.

'Old' and familiar is so much easier. How much of this new day will I spend in old thoughts, old habits and

familiar haunts.

Even old pains and hurts are better and clung to; rather then the risk of going somewhere new or trying

something unfamiliar. We pull the past pains into our present moment. Filling what could be new

opportunities with familiar sorrows. Locking our gaze backward instead of envisioning forward. Filling

our time with so much 'yesterday' that there is no room for 'tomorrow.'

Perhaps that's why we need Steven ministers (seek them and you will find them); for some fresh eyes or

new thoughts. Some one to point out the 'new' way and encourage us in it. Some one to walk along beside

us; and when the 'new' thing becomes difficult or turns messy or gets complicated or we just get discouraged

in it--there is someone there to hear our mornings and lend us a hand or an ear.

Wayside has lots of new things to get involved with....new people to fellowship with, building with Habitat

for Humanity, singing with the choir, assisting with the Sunday School. Check out your Waysider or Sunday

bulletin for things to do. Show up at a meeting or group or activity and you will be happily welcome.

Take the risk and try something 'new' in this 'new' year.

SOME THOUGHTS...

Make new friends; but keep the old; one is silver and the other gold. (children's verse)

"Behold; I make all things new." (God)

" We, who are in Christ have become new creatures ( a new creation); I do not know what it is that

I am yet in the process of becoming;

but I, know, that in the end, I will be as Christ. " (Paul)

WIDE MOUTH PLASTIC BOTTLES NEEDED

After the first of the year, the Sunday school will be

doing a global mission project called ―Turn on the

Tap.‖ They need wide mouth plastic bottles for this.

If you would start collecting (please rinse out and

keep the lids on) and bring to the church starting

January 8th. There will be a large container in Room

110 for them. It will be a different container than the

one we use for recycling bottles. Thank you.

BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP

You are going to love the selection for January…‖Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand‖ by Helen

Simonson is a beautiful little love story told with skill and humor. Major Pettigrew lives a

quiet, unassuming life in a small village in England, but an unexpected friendship with Mrs.

Jasmina Ali, a Pakistani shopkeeper from the village has some unexpected consequences. Can their

friendship survive the risks one takes when pursuing happiness in the face of culture and tradition?

―The Girl in the Blue Beret‖ by Bobbie Ann Mason is our choice read for February. During World War II

many US pilots were shot down or parachuted behind enemy lines. They were often rescued by French

Resistance Fighters. Marshall Stone was one of these pilots and after his 60th birthday decides to revisit

France and try and retrace what happened and find some of the folks who helped him. While the story is

fiction, it is based on truth...the story of the author’s father-in- law and his experiences in WW II.

Everyone is invited to join us for some lively discussion about the books read and other topics of interest

to the group. Starting this month, we are meeting on the third Tuesday of the month. So join us on

Tuesday, January 17th at 7 PM. You won’t be sorry. We are always looking for books to discuss, so if

you have a favorite bring it to a meeting and suggest we all read and discuss it.

date will make the next month’s Waysider.

MEET THE STAFF… .

.

Bill Louden is pursuing degrees in music composition, physics, and

psychology at the University at Buffalo. Over the past decade, he has

performed with and written for a variety of ensembles across the

United States and Europe. He currently performs with the Genkin

Philharmonic, Tango, Etc., and various University at Buffalo ensembles.

He also maintains a private piano and composition studio in Buffalo.

We welcome Bill as the new accompanist for the choir and the band.

Many of you already know me, but for those of you who don’t allow me to

introduce myself. My name is Michael Edwards and I am assuming the role

of co-Christian Ed Director for Wayside. Maria Glass and I will be sharing

the position until the end of the school year. I will be working with the

teaching staff to help coordinate the curriculum and activities for the children

of Wayside. I am currently working at Hamburg High School as an art

teacher. I have been teaching for 20 years. During that time I have instructed

all grade levels. At the high school level I have taught photography, ceramics,

art history, studio in art, fibers and jewelry design, and drawing and painting.

I am very excited about working with the students and staff here at Wayside.

I hope that we can accomplish some wonderful things from now until the

end of the year. Anyone who wishes to contact me can e-mail me at

[email protected]. Thanks and God bless.

The Chew Chew is still chugging

along. He is a hungry fellow.

Any nonperishable food that you

can donate is always appreciated.

The children painted 125 bags for Christmas food

donations. Sure hope you had a chance to see them

all around the tree in Room 110 before they were

given to our food pantries for dispersal to hungry

families. Thank you for caring and giving.

HAT, MITTEN, & SCARF TREE

Thank you to everyone for their generous donations

to our tree. A special thank you to Rita Staffan who

crochets all year and brought in bags of mittens,

scarves, and hats. Through your generous hearts

we were able to warm may heads, necks, and hands.

Christian Education-Theme: MISSION Increasing our awareness of the scope of our church’s

mission throughout the world.

Greetings,

Thank you to the children from grades 2, 3, 4, and 5 for their presentation of ―Amazing Grace‖ on Sunday,

December 4th. I also want to especially thank teachers Steve Paluch, Joanne England, Kathy Pyne, Kiara

Catanzaro and Michelle West as well at Bruce Decker and the band for planning the arrangement and

spending extra time on the rehearsals.

The children, as usual did an amazing presentation in the annual Christmas pageant. It was a great way to

usher in Christmas.

Be sure to watch for the mission program that the children are participating in after the first of the year. It is

called ―Turn on the Tap‖ and is about supplying clean water to third world countries.

As you probably read elsewhere in the Waysider, Michael Edwards and Maria Glass are assuming the job

of Christian Education Co Directors here at Wayside through the end of the Sunday school year. I want

to thank them for taking the position so that our programs can all continue. They will be working in

conjunction with the CE Committee and have some great ideas for the spring including a family retreat.

I’m sorry I won’t be here for them!

In closing, I want to thank everyone for the presentation in church in honor of my retirement on Sunday,

December 11th. Of course, I loved the gift certificate to Barnes & Noble and the Presbyterian emblem pin,

but the very best was all the children and the teachers coming down the center aisle and onto the chancel

and singing one of my favorite hymns. I was so honored by their presentation and the gifts from the church

and the teachers. I know it is an old cliché, but thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support

in the past seven years. I will miss everyone and being here, but will think of you often during my sojourn

in Myrtle Beach and points south.

JOURNEY by JIM BARRY, Chair of Christian Education

It’s that wonderful time of the year that so naturally presents itself; the time to reflect and capture some

thoughts on paper. What is on my mind right now is the recent part of my journey at Wayside. I have a

peaceful confidence brewing in me. There has been tremendous change in almost every aspect of the

church which seems fitting due to the tremendous change in almost every aspect of my life. What a broad

range of experiences have been sent my way. I, like most, claim that I like things the way they are, even if I

don’t so much, just to avoid the hassles associated with accepting and doing things differently. I find my

self clinging on to conservative values but I am loving the liberal ideas that are being shared by my day to

day acquaintances. I guess I have both conservative and liberal views. Is that possible? What do I really

believe?

I, like so many of us at Wayside, was raised in the Roman Catholic tradition. Today this for me represents

the far right religious orientation; full of doctrine and discipline. I spent my first 20 years in that posture,

and those were very formative years. Then for whatever reason I gained the confidence to seek answers to

questions of the universe. I moved from the right more toward the center when I found the Presbyterian

Church. I found there many of the traditional aspects of Church, like the music, the preaching, the rituals,

the Sunday school, the elderly and etc.. But I also found many reformed aspects of the church, like the

music, the preaching, the rituals, the Sunday school, the elderly and etc…. I was so captivated by the

idea that I could have my God but have God in a way that I could understand it was like I now spoke the

language and could listen and understand. Well, that led me on a quest for meaning and took a deeper dive

into the Presbyterian Church. My path took a left turn and found myself with teachers of ideas that I had

never heard of. I was reading other ―Books‖ and holding them in the highest regard, almost in place of

scripture. The studies and conversations were way ―out there‖ sometimes bizarre. It was confusing at first

and as I remained open and continued on, I resolved for myself that I had landed on the far left side of the

―religious‖ universe. What a trip.

Then the shake up. Seeing it coming I got anxious. What could we do to prepare for it? How could we

soften the impact? What was going to become of my church? OMG help, fix it, make it OK. Yet as I

looked around me it seemed like everybody, including me, was just thinking, talking, complaining and

worrying about it. But, little was actually being done. So we plunged and it felt like we were sinking, there

was turmoil and a lot of ill will. A lot of doom and gloom was spread. How could we survive, is there a

bottom, when will be crash in to it? How will we climb out of it? OMG please help.

Then the recovery. Thank God for hearing the prayers through the whining and complaining. Thank God

for the healing of hearts and relationships. Thank God for fortifying our leaders. Thank God for taking his

plan to the next level. Today I look around and have a very good sense of where we have been and where

we are and what that journey looked like and why it was necessary to go down the way it did. I thank God

for the lessons and experiences of life that I have been blessed with. I have a new suit of armor from God

and am ready willing and able to fight for my God, my church and family. OMG call on me God I am

ready to go.

So I invite you all to consider our journey together. I am not suggesting that you conclude whether you

liked it or not or if you would have preferred it to be different. But, I would ask that you prayerfully discuss

it with God and come to grips with the reality of it all. As I move back to the center I can embrace my

traditional roots; the doctrine and all of it. At the same time I can fly to the valley of ―Love Without End‖

and take the course in miracles. But today I want to be both. I want to be Presbyterian. With Gods help I

am a Christian.

Amen.

THOUGHTS by JIM BARRY, Chair of Christian Education

Thank God for quiet time this holiday season. For the last couple of weeks I have enjoyed some time to read

and think and that has lead me back to my computer to capture my thoughts. This electronic journal has

been such a joy for me; when the Word comes to me I love to write it down. I just finished a book, ―Right

People, Right Place, Right Plan-Discerning the Voice of God‖; and so much stirs in me. Discerning is not a

word that is commonly used out in the day to day conversations around town. I hear it in some religious

circles that I engage with, but for the average person I think that it is not well understood. What a shame, for

those that are aware of what discerning is and practice it know the power that comes through it. I can sum it

up simply that discerning is the practice of putting God in the equation of decision making. To give you a

feel for how important this process is here are a few decisions that I am currently trying to discern what the

best path is to take: How should I deal with my 19 year old daughters hunger for marriage and children?

How should I handle relationships that have time and again been harmful to my wife, children and self?

How much should I work? What kind of lifestyle do I want to live? How should I spend the holidays?

How should I support my church? As you can see these are tremendously emotional issues that have

complex and far reaching ramifications. I really want to make the best decisions possible. Well… God????

Take your time God, for you have blessed me well with patience. Or, if You rather, I will drop what I am

doing and go out. I am here to serve You.

So how does the process work? For me it begins with anticipation; waiting patiently on the Lord for

responses to my daily mantra of ―call on me Lord‖. We as humans have the powerful gift of being able to

anticipate outcomes and responses given people and circumstances surrounding us. Understanding our place

in the environment is important to living a discerning lifestyle. As I wait in anticipation of clarity I am

confident that the answers will present themselves, or not, according to God’s will and time table. If the

answers come then my actions gain meaning and purpose, if not I continue to pray and listen. How do I

know when a Sign is before me? To use an analogy, it’s kind of like putting on my glasses. All of a sudden

things are clear and my vision becomes focused. Then I need to integrate this new information with the rest

of life’s affairs. It is a matter of prioritization. On a regular and frequent basis it is necessary to consider

your plate full, especially the stuff that is overflowing, to weigh what is important and or urgent. Once those

weights are applied the heavy lifting is separated from the lighter loads and we can juggle and balance our

life’s works and missions. It is amazing how the process flows once put in motion. The hard part is getting

started by being in the right frame of mind. So, I encourage you all to begin with preparing your hearts and

minds by lifting up your call to Jesus and begin to patiently wait upon God for clear signs of direction and

purpose.

Thank God for Divine Processes,

Jim Barry

QUILT FOR THE LORD & MONDAY EVENING STITCHERS (STITCHIN’ II)

Quilt for the Lord meets every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Room 110. We are not just

quilters, we are also knitters and scrapers. Everyone is welcome to join us.

The Monday Evening Stitchers (Stitchin’ Time II) is on winter hiatus. Watch for the May Waysider

and their resume date.

If you know of a church member that would benefit from being wrapped in the warmth of one of our

quilts, or have any questions, please call the office or contact either Shirley 649-0736 or Mary Lou

863-9347.

THOUGHTS If you have ―thoughts‖ you would like to share with the congregation, please submit them to

the office by January 14th for next month’s issue.
