Dear Friends, It seems to me that our fall and winter holidays are closer and closer together. It is hard for me, in the fast pace of life to celebrate one without feeling like I need to get it done so I can move on to the next. I loved all of the things people wrote on our thankful pumpkin last month. Please take moment to look at it and see what we are thankful for in our congregation.

Now we are entering into Advent. A season of preparation and celebration. I hope you will find time during this season to participate in some kind of practice to help you prepare. We have devotional booklets available. Friday, December 6, we have a film and activity to help us get ready. We have the Reverse Advent Calendar. Maybe you have some rituals of your own. Whatever you choose, I encourage you to spend a few moments everyday reflecting on the season, the gift of grace and hope we receive from God, and how God transforms us through the birth of Christ. Spend time with friends and family, too. Have fun and enjoy all that the season offers us with music and parties and gatherings. And remember We celebrate God’s good gifts to us this season and throughout the year. Blessings, Cathy Here is a poem I came across last week. It is from our Poet Laureate, Joy Harjo. Perhaps the World Ends Here BY JOY HARJO The world begins at a kitchen table. No matter what, we must eat to live. The gifts of earth are brought and prepared, set on the table. So it has been since creation, and it will go on. We chase chickens or dogs away from it. Babies teethe at the corners. They scrape their knees under it. It is here that children are given instructions on what it means to be human. We make men at it, we make women. At this table we gossip, recall enemies and the ghosts of lovers. Our dreams drink coffee with us as they put their arms around our children. They laugh with us at our poor falling-down selves and as we put ourselves back together once again at the table. This table has been a house in the rain, an umbrella in the sun. Wars have begun and ended at this table. It is a place to hide in the shadow of terror. A place to celebrate the terrible victory. We have given birth on this table, and have prepared our parents for burial here. At this table we sing with joy, with sorrow. We pray of suffering and remorse. We give thanks. Perhaps the world will end at the kitchen table, while we are laughing and crying, eating of the last sweet bite.

WAYSIDE CHURCH BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP - WINTER

Here are our selections until March 2020.

Read one or read them all and come join us for the discussion.

If you plan on going to Bible Study after, feel free to bring

your lunch and beverage to the Book Discussion in our Library.

Monday, December 16 at 12:30 PM Two by Two by Nicholas Sparks (note change of date)

Monday, January 27 at 12:30 PM The Boys in the Boat by Daniel James Brown

Monday, March 23 at 12:30 PM The Alienist by Caleb Carr

Bestselling author Nicholas Sparks returns with an emotionally powerful story of unconditional love, its challenges, its risks and most of all, its rewards. Russ Green has it all and then all of a sudden he doesn’t. Russ embarks on a journey at once terrifying and rewarding—one that will test his abilities and his emotional resources beyond anything he ever imagined.

The actual title is: The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

We think you will love this book. It’s a story of how the ‘underdog’ rowing team from the University of Washington overcame adversity and went on to defeat the Nazis in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The games that Hitler was using to show the world the Nazis ‘ true power and sophistication. The power he was hoping to use to take over the world.

Monday, February 24 at 12:30 PM Fate and Furies by Lauren Groff

This novel depicts two lives, and each life is shaped by the kind of story favored by the person who lives it. Lancelot “Lotto” Satterwhite and Mathilde Yoder meet in college and wed two weeks later; they will be married for 24 largely happy years. Lotto fails as an actor in New York City, then succeeds, under Mathilde’s covert guidance, as a playwright. They live together intimately, but the stories they tell themselves about their relationship and how the world works are far, far apart. Come to the discussion and let’s talk about your impressions of this novel.

The year is 1896. The city is New York. Newspaper reporter John Schuyler Moore is summoned by his friend Dr. Laszlo Kreizler—a psychologist, or “alienist”—to view the horribly mutilated body of an adolescent boy abandoned on the unfinished Williamsburg Bridge. From there the two embark on a revolutionary effort in criminology: creating a psychological profile of the perpetrator based on the details of his crimes. Their dangerous quest takes them into the tortured past and twisted mind of a murderer who will kill again before their hunt is over. Fast-paced and riveting, infused with historical detail, The Alienist conjures up Gilded Age New York, with its tenements and mansions, corrupt cops and flamboyant gangsters, shining opera houses and seamy gin mills. It is an age in which questioning society’s belief that all killers are born, not made, could have unexpected and fatal consequences.

Please join us at Wayside as we gather to watch the “The Last Straw” on Friday, December 6 at 5:30 PM. We’ll watch the movie, enjoy a pot luck dinner together and each family will be able to make a manger for

baby Jesus on Christmas Eve. Every day leading up to Christmas, family members can put a piece of hay/straw in the manger when they do something nice for someone (without telling anyone what they did, it’s supposed to be a secret). On Christmas Eve there will be a nice

soft place to lay baby Jesus.

Please sign-up downstairs outside of the main office. Any questions, please see Alicia Faust.

Looking for a way for your family to spread Christmas joy? Consider using the reverse Advent Calendar to help put together a box of diverse foods to share with a local food

pantry. If you have any questions, please see Shirley Vandepoll or Pam Decker.

The giving tree is up. Please consider taking a tag and purchasing a gift for one of our family members. We are adopting two families through the Family Help Center and one Veteran’s family through Western New York Heroes. If you are unable to shop and would like us to shop for you, please see Kathy McKinney and she will accept a monetary donation. Due to the short time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, please return gifts by Sunday, December 15th. Thank you for supporting our Outreach Program

The Quilt for the Lord group at Wayside gathered their fabric, cut kits,

sewed quilt tops and binding to finish the quilts for the last year. The fabric for the

tops was donated by the women, backing and batting was purchased from our treasury at a wholesale cost. Chasen

Dreams Quilting donated additional backing and all of the quilting. It has

been a year long project to complete 50 quilts. The love, care and prayers that go

into one of these quilts is priceless. We will once again be working with WNY

Heroes to distribute the quilts and this project will go to women veterans. The

material, batting, backing and quilting would be about $7,500 if you were to

cost out our project. This doesn't include the labor involved. All this through the

generosity of our women. Thank you to our group for their commitment to giving.
