What better excuse for a neighbourly get-together??!! How well do you know your neighbours? Knowing your neighbours is the first step to create safer, friendlier communities, and knowing that your neighbours are there for you when you need help is a great feeling. Pick a strategic driveway, crank up the BBQ, pull up a chair, and chew the fat with the neighbours. For ideas for fun activities, download the resource pack, posters and invitations from www.neighboursday.org.nz or collect them from the WBCC. Register your event, no matter how rowdy or humble, either with the Centre or on the website. Send us your story/video/photos after the event and enter the competition for the best story – details from the WBCC. Last year ended on a high note with the very successful community day at Owens Park. Thanks to all involved, especially the youth development team at Sport BoP, and the team at Welcome Bay Community Centre. Great music, delicious food, and some wonderful ideas from the community for the future development of Owens Park. First and foremost was a BMX track, followed by better park facilities such as picnic tables, BBQ, and playground equipment. Community gardens and fruit trees were high on the list, a few votes for more sports facilities, and not least a unicorn. The best of all was the feedback at the end of the day: “When we do this next year…” and “Next year, we would love to…” Many thanks to the principals of Welcome Bay School and Selwyn Ridge school for their tremendous twosome MC’ing the stage!! If you would like to be involved in this year’s event in December – stall holder, performer, ideas-person, sponsor, volunteer – please contact the Community Centre. Planning for the next event will start in the next couple of months. The Welcome Bay Business Network is up and running, with the focus of creating a cohesive group to represent the needs of the business community in Welcome Bay. Our thanks go to all involved in the inaugural breakfast, in particular to Garry Poole, our esteemed guest speaker, and to Palmers Garden Centre for their contribution to the menu. If you run a local business, however big or small, you are welcome to join. Please contact the Centre with your details. Meetings will vary between breakfast meetings and evening meetings to enable as many people as possible to attend. ‘Community Connexions’ (Young People’s Programme) is up and running again this term, with activities taking place in the local parks around Welcome Bay and surrounding suburbs every Friday from 4.30pm until dusk. We’ve teamed up with ‘Waka Kai’ (Ngai Te Rangi’s mobile kitchen unit) and taking the food and sport out to the community. So far, we’ve had blast, even when it rained! From the beginning of April, the programme will back at the Centre and Welcome Bay Hall. Neighbours Day Aotearoa is being celebrated at the end of March. The summer sunburn is fading and the last of sand has been shaken from the beach towels as Term 1 of the school year commences.Last year ended on a high note with the very successful community day at Owens Park. BMX Project

March is the month we kick-off the BMX project. While this is a project for the kids to drive, adult skills and support are required. If you are interested in working on the development plans, and especially if you have skills in engineering, design, project management, your support will be most appreciated. Come along to the fi rst meeting on Sunday 9 March at 4.00pm at the Welcome Bay Community Centre.

Garden Club

We’ve had lots of interest in a community garden and it would be great to get something going at Owens Park, ready for a spring planting this year. A number of people have also voiced an interest in a regular garden club. If you would like to be involved in either of these, come along to a meeting at 6.00pm on Monday 24 March at the Welcome Bay Community Centre.

The Welcome Bay Community Centre is seeking a dedicated volunteer to coordinate the volunteers who support the Centre with much needed skills and enthusiasm. If you are social, enthusiastic, know how to motivate others, and have 8 – 10 hours a week to spare, and would like to join a busy, lively team, please contact the Welcome Bay Community Centre. Training and support will be provided, with on-going training in volunteer support and community development.

Enjoy playing cards? Do you want to learn to playBridge in a relaxed & friendly environment?Beginners lessons Thurs 20 March at 7pm at

For those of you that I have not met, my role is working with members of our community problem solving any issues that may arise.I am at the Community Centre on Wednesdays from 10am -12am or should you need to speak to me outside of this, the Centre has my contact details.I am a very strong advocate for community organisations such

as Neighbourhood Support and community patrols. If you are interested in setting up a group or becoming involved please don't hesitate to call me or ask the Community Centre for information.Communities are stronger and more resilient when they are able to look after themselves and this can be achieved by building relationships with their neighbours and community groups.
