WBGO’s Kids Jazz ConcertSeries celebrated its 20thanniversary season this past

April. It was the most successful yetthanks in large part to the newTransportation Fund from the Agnes VarisTrust; supporting affordable access to thearts, education, and healthcare. The Varisgrant enabled WBGO to fund EssexCounty, NJ groups, like Pride AcademyCharter School and Arc of Essex County,so they could rent vehicles to transport

students to WBGO’s free concerts. Thisopportunity grew audiences at each of thefive free concerts, and further spreadWBGO’s mission among families andyouth organizations in New Jersey.

Audiences at multiple concerts this sea-son pushed the limits of theater seatingcapacity providing a packed house full ofenergy for the performers; somehowBobby Sanabria (April 6) and Ascenciónstill found room for families to dance inthe aisles to classical Latin jazz beats.Lauren Hooker (April 13) and her bandcontinued the party with dancing andaudience sing-a-longs through the historyof jazz during WBGO’s first Kids JazzConcert at Luna Stage’s new WestOrange location. Mimi Jones (April 20)and her all female band turned kids intostars when they invited young audiencemembers to improvise their own bluessong on the microphone at the MontclairArt Museum. Lenny White (April 27)gave students inspiration to delve deeper

into jazz showcasing two teenage power-houses, accompanying him on stage at theNewark Museum. Families were gra-ciously invited to visit the Museum forfree following the show to participate inhands-on activities with the Museum’smonthly “Make-it, Take-it Saturday”event. For many of the students attendingthe concert series through theTransportation Fund, the Kids JazzConcert Series was the first live musicperformance they had ever attended.Students with NJAfter3 said they felt likeVIPs at NJPAC’s stately Victoria Hallwhen following the show they got to meetthe artist Michael Wolff (May 4) with hisson, Hollywood star and fellow musician,Alex Wolff for autographs in the lobby.Kids who came to the concerts receivedmini instruments and T-shirts, also pro-

vided by the Agnes Varis Trust, to remem-ber the concert long into the next seasonof the Kids Jazz Concert Series.

Any groups working with Essex County,NJ youth who would like to be consideredfor the next round of Kids Jazz ConcertSeries Transportation Funding shouldsend their email address, contact infor-mation, and organization name [email protected]. Applications and moreinformation will be available during thesummer and e-mailed to all interestedparties. Groups working with families orparents are also encouraged to apply.
