CAFS Annual Golf Tournament History
In the year 1948, Colin Dobell (CAFS first president), organized the “Canadian Association of Fleet Supervisors” and it included representatives from most of Vancouver’s trucking firms. By the early 1960s this Association used to get together once a year for a convention with The Oregon Chapter of the Council of Safety Supervisors and the Seattle Chapter of the National Association of Fleet Supervisors. During the annual convention, the Association of Fleet Supervisors along with the other two associations, used to hold a golf tournament. The convention and golf venues used to rotate between the associations. Eventually CAFS moved away from the other associations and the golf social became the CAFS Annual Golf Tournament.
Tournament Locations From 1988 - 1997 the golf tournament was held at the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club course in Delta.
Tournament numbers averaged between 75 – 95 golfers each year. The registration fee for golf and dinner in 1993 was $69.55 and a hole sponsor was $145.
The prices had not gone up for year’s but CAFS could still not fill all of the spaces or sponsor spots. Every one that attended always had a good time and the weather was usually good. There were only a couple of rain outs during those days at the Tsawwassen course.
For 1998, the Golf Committee decided to move the tournament to Carnoustie Golf Club in Port Coquitlam. The hope was to build up interest and get more players out, as they had heard from the membership that the Tsawwassen course was out of the way for the majority of the members.
The gamble paid off, there was an increase to 130 golfers and there were 24 sponsors in the first year at the new course. The fees were only increased to $85
for golf and dinner. Carnoustie hosted CAFS tournaments up to and including that extremely wet September day in 2002.
In preparing for the 2003 Annual Golf Tournament, the golf committee, headed by Graeme Douglas (president 2003-2004) decided to move forward with a change of venue and a new date in June taking a chance that weather would be better than the traditional September dates.

“Why change an already successfully formula? Why not? Many of our members had expressed interest in changing the venue, in addition to catering more to our Fraser Valley members by moving further east.”
By all accounts the move to Belmont Golf Course in Langley was another major boost for the Annual Tournament. CAFS members enjoyed the tournament at this venue for the next 10 years (2003-2013).
The size of the tournament continued to grow both in numbers of golfers and number of sponsorships and prizes.
In 2003 we were at a maximum of 145 slots which expanded in size by 2005 to accommodate a full slate of 156 golfers. In 2005 the golf package charge was now $135 with small increments through the next years. Fees remained at $195 from 2011-2013.
The golf package itself also got better with age… in the early years at Belmont, the registration gifts were CAFS logo’d items like golf towels, keychains and divot tools and they just kept getting better with the inclusion of the Registration Gift sponsors in 2010-2013. Each of these years, the golfers
were now receiving with their golf and dinner package, and a registration gift of golf bags, wedges, putters and in the final year it was a utility club. Sponsorship opportunities were abundant and also sold out quickly. Increasing from 19 sponsors in 2003 up to 30-35 sponsorships sold each year by the end of 2014.
The sponsored food & drink trucks were very popular with the golfers. In 2003 both food trucks, The Wondering Wok & Fountain Tire’s BBQ, ran out of food before the day of golf was over and
the super popular 4Refuels Mini-Tanker, emptied his beer kegs early too! The following year there was more than enough food and drinks for all.

Our history of the Annual Golf Tournament locations now brings us to the current venue, Redwoods Golf Course in Langley (2014 - 2019). The tournament offerings have seen many changes through the years in hopes that each season will be more fun and be kept fresh and entertaining for all participants.
The number of golfers on the slate have remained at 156. This has been the maximum number since 2011 and avid participants know to respond quickly when the registration email arrives because the
tournament usually sells out within a day or two!
The move to the Redwoods location also was an opportunity to up the fun quotient with the implementation of a new tournament theme each year. 2014 started it off with a Hawaiian theme, since then we have seen Cowboys, hippies, sports fans, Hollywood stars and proud Canadians. Please read on in the next CAFS issue for lots of pictures that highlight the fun that the organizers, hole sponsors and golfers had with the theme of the season.
Sponsorship opportunities have not changed much in cost or variety the last 15 years. The usual basic Hole sponsorship has remained at $400 since 2005 and Specialty Hole sponsors like KP, LD and Straight Drive stayed at $500 per. With the addition of the tournament theme, Novelty hole sponsors have gotten creative with costumes and decorations, providing gifts and feeding the golfers as they pass through.
Holding mini contests at various holes ensures there are a variety of fun competitions throughout the course. Putting and Chipping sponsorships have gotten creative as well. Tests like throwing a
football to hit a target or chipping into a cooler that would later be filled with beer have been very popular.
Another staple sponsorship opportunity of a good tournament is the Hole-In One. There has always been at least one sponsored hole who’s prize for the winner would be a truck, a motorbike or cash but in recent years there has been multiple Hole-In-One sponsors each year. We have even had sponsors who upped the excitement by offering as many trucks as Hole-In-One sinkers! To date there has never
been a winner on a Hole-In-One sponsored slot. Perhaps a first in CAFS tournament series, in 2019, George Thrower / Kal Tire sunk his ball in one shot on hole #12 sponsored by Work Truck West.

2014 also saw the introduction of five NEW sponsorship opportunities that have been well received and continue to sell out rapidly.
After checking in at registration, the attendees move to the ‘Tailgate Party’ held under the big tents. An excellent chance to mingle with the other golfers and to grab a drink and themed snack prior to hitting the links.
After the snacks and prior to the shotgun start time, golfers participate in another sponsored contest, the ‘Mega Putt’. If you haven’t witnessed one, it is quite the site… all golfers gather around the putting green and all 156 golfers putt at one time into one hole. Chaotic fun! Demolition derby golf balls.
While the attendees are all together, we then move to capture a mass group photo of all participants. It takes a few shots to get everyone looking one direction but it really shows how
many are involved in the days festivities.
This would also be a good time to thank Kal Tire for generously providing this great group shot but also a keepsake team memento for each golfer. As the day progresses the photographer travels the course to take a group picture of each team in action. There have been some very amusing shots through the years!
We began in 2014 with the new version of the ‘Score Cards’ sponsor. The sponsor had their company logo on each and every score card so it provided lots of exposure during the whole day for the advertising buck. In 2019 we moved to using Redwood’s scoring app. The app still features the sponsor company logo but it also shows you how all golfers are doing, and has pop ups telling you what’s coming up next.
The enjoyment of the day continues well after the last golfer leaves the course. What is better then a beautiful day of golf?... a great dinner followed by lots of prizes.
One of the largest sponsored items of the day, is the ‘Banquet Dinner’. This sponsorship helps share the costs of the awesome feast prepared by Redwoods chefs, were guests choice of BBQ steak or chicken dinner, comes complete with all the fixings. Following dinner is the next big sponsored item, the Banquet Dessert, a variety of delicious items and each dish comes with a banner noting the sponsor.

After dinner and dessert, perhaps the next best part of the day... prizes and cash gifts!
Over the years we have had some pretty spectacular main door prize draws which include TVs, Golf Bag & accessories, gift certificates and gift baskets, cameras and electronics and some very nice bottles of wine and spirits. The evening always concludes with a final cash draw of the evening sponsored by CAFS.
All feedback received indicates CAFS tournament continues to just get better and better each year! CAFS is proud of the success of this annual tournament, and we thank all the golfers AND sponsors, as the tournament would not be the same without you!
Please remember to Support those who support us!
